Opis:
The article is dedicated to the study of the attitudes of Polish young adults towards ritual slaughter, which was conducted in the year 2015 on a sample of university students in Białystok, Poland. It is a part of an intersectional research on subjects’ attitudes towards the presence of Muslims, exemplified by various forms of their participation in society, including the expression of their beliefs and everyday practices which are grounded in Islamic tradition. The article presents an analysis of attitudes towards ritual slaughter with the aim of discovering what could shape respondents’ approval vs disapproval. It entails three contextualized scenarios related to the halal issue: a) ritual slaughter conducted in Poland, b) import and c) sales of meat obtained in concordance with Islam, including the no-stunning principle. For the purpose of investigating mechanisms of disapproval, the project encompasses comprehensive dependent and independent variables, i.e. subjects’ denomination and religious practice, political orientation, self-defined local, national and European identities/territorial attachment and the feelings of threat – the latter is prompted by conventional representations of Islam and its disciples as being the enemies of the West and potential terrorists. The feeling of threat is of significant interest in the article as the existing literature on attitudes towards Muslims and other minority groups suggests that it could be a factor in attitude formation towards otherness, namely: that its higher levels are related to the disapproval of ‘the others’, their cultural characteristics and practices. Therefore, we suspect that generalized feelings of threat may translate into negative attitudes towards the practice of ritual slaughter, i.e. preparation of meat in line with the requirements of Judaism and Islam. We find support for this hypothesis but only with respect to feelings of national threat.

Opis:
This paper is an analysis of the changes in the Polish law concerning ritual slaughter since 1997 when Ustawa o ochronie zwierząt (Animal Protection Act) was passed. Consequent legislative changes are presented in chronological order, in comparison with the public debate on the topic. The author focuses especially on the judgments of the Constitutional Court and on the reasoning that was used to present the sentences. Apart from the issues connected with law the paper also attempts to summarise the debate on ritual slaughter in Poland, especially with regard to the statements of religious associations.

Opis:
A few seconds. Konstanty Gebert in a conversation with Joanna Tokarska-Bakir, Elżbieta Janicka and Anna ZawadzkaIn 2012–2013, Poland was discussing ritual slaughter. Its adversaries claimed that the kind of animal slaughtering that makes the animal meat kosher and halal, causes extra suffering to animals and therefore should be banned. However, the postulate of banning ritual slaughter in Poland is not new and it goes back to the pre-war period. In the Studia Litteraria et Historica’s interview Konstanty Gebert talks about the history of Polish debate on the ritual slaughter, its anti-Semitic applications and about not anti-Semitic arguments risen in the discussion. He describes legal solutions for the ritual slaughter in other countries and addresses the issue of animal killing as a moral problem in Judaism. He also discusses the contemporary debate on the ritual slaughter: is it really in the name of the animal rights?

Opis:
Humanity has practised animal sacrifice for the greater part of its history, from the time of the Neolithic Revolution. The ritual forms have varied, depending on the culture. They have also been subject to change, in connection with the development of human understanding and knowledge of animals, which is reflected in the ontological, cultural and moral status assigned to animals in the human world. Sacrificing animals involved not only killing them in a particular way – their treatment was sometimes sophisticated or ‘ritualistic’; often it was simply cruel. Human attitudes towards non-human living beings have also evolved in the context of animal killing and sacrifice. The treatment of animals reveals a great deal about human beings – in terms of their culture, beliefs, and morals. The article outlines this issue in a historical manner, referring to the practices adopted in selected cultural circles (in the Mediterranean Basin): ancient Mesopotamia and Greece, as well as in Judaism and Islam. The key findings of researchers are presented, along with the evaluations of philosophers, ethicists and anthropologists.

Opis:
Faroese people consider grindadraps (pilot whale hunting) as a cultural heritage. Despite the fact, that nowadays Faroese do not have to use this method in order to provide themselves with food needed to survive, tradition is still performed and has other functions. Outside of Faroe Islands the public opinion describes this tradition very critically, usually as a ‘barbaric slaughter’. This traditional whaling should be considered as a procedure exposing the animals to a high level of distress. In the context of the high civilizational development and material welfare, the practice of whaling appears to be an inadequate and cruel relic of the past and in the long term perspective it should become forbidden.
