    The following article will attempt to present characteristics of religious fundamentalism. The task requires addressing terminological and methodological issues, which seem to constitute the weakest link in the overall research of the phenomenon. Even a cursory analysis of the available data points to the fact, that comparative studies are in minority, while an overwhelming majority of all research focuses on particular instances of fundamentalism, most commonly within one specific religion. Three preliminary observations can be made. Firstly, usually the case is that of either methodological maximalism or minimalism. The work edited by Martin E. Marty and R. Scott Appleby Fundamentalisms Observed, significant as it was, can serve as a valid example of maximalist approach. The phenomenon discussed therein is viewed in the broad perspective, thus it becomes almost synonymous to traditionalism, nationalism, orthodoxy or communalism.

    This is a study of the relationship between EAS temperament traits, age and gender, and religious fundamentalism in an adult Polish sample. Participants were sampled from among people who tended towards secularisation. A total of 902 participants, including 551 women and 351 men, aged 18 to 58 (M=27.73; SD=7.40) were studied. Participants were students in a variety of university faculties and adults with higher education representing a variety of professions. They all lived in the Warsaw area. Temperament was assessed with Buss and Plomin’s EAS Temperament Survey. Religious fundamentalism was assessed using Altemeyer and Hunsberger’s Religious Fundamentalism Scale (short, revised version). The level of religious fundamentalism was found to be associated with the temperament traits of sociability and anger. All three variables decrease in intensity with age. Women have higher levels of religious fundamentalism than men.

    This paper explores the influence of social context, class, and ideology on attitudes toward immigrants in the US. Using the conceptual frames of heterophobia and resource competition, we hypothesize that between 1996 and 2014 attitudes toward immigrants would become increasingly negative because of changes in the social context, in particular the growth in the number and diversity of immigrants. We also hypothesize that people in more precarious labor market positions, without a college education, and with a conservative religious ideology will have more negative attitudes toward immigrants. Using the General Social Survey at three points in time (1996, 2004, and 2014), we find mixed support for our hypotheses. Attitudes toward immigrants became more positive in the overall sample, but more negative for religious fundamentalists. Religious ideology and education were better predictors of attitudes toward immigrants than employment status and self-identified class. In general, the data show more support for the heterophobia explanation for negative attitudes than the resource competition explanation.

    Opis:
    In the paper the author examines the dependence of migration pressure on religious fundamentalism. We strive to identify such a form of religious fundamentalism, which can be regarded beyond doubt, as an important cause of contemporary migration pressures. Religious fundamentalism is originally conceived as a return to a forgotten doctrinal and moral foundation, and as such does not pose any threat. The danger is the chosen way of returning to the forgotten religious foundation, especially if such a way would be legitimized by religion. This is a case of mixing religious renewal with the politicization of religion. It is shown that the threat of migratory pressure is the result of such a form of religious fundamentalism, in which religious renewal is mixed with the politicization of religion. Islamic Religious fundamentalism is structurally linked to the politicization of religion and therefore exerts its migratory pressure in the place of its influence.

    The first association that comes to mind after hearing the phrase „contemporary religious fundamentalism” are usually terrorist attacks made by Islamic fighters in western countries. However, it is a fact, that today’s religious fundamentalism is no longer connected only with religion. Its protestant roots are reaching back previous centuries. Also, fundamentalism itself is often a base to terror acts carried out by some radical groups. In this article, author brings closer the concept of fundamentalism itself, points the genesis of religious fundamentalism and explains its contemporary essence and nature.
    Pierwszym skojarzeniem, jakie przychodzi na myśl po usłyszeniu frazy „współczesny fundamentalizm religijny” są zazwyczaj ataki terrorystyczne doko-nywane przez islamskich bojowników na państwa Zachodu. Faktem jest jednak, że dziś fundamentalizm religijny nie jest już związany wyłącznie z religią. Jego prote-stanckie korzenie sięgają poprzednich stuleci, co więcej, nierzadko stanowił on podstawę do aktów terroru dokonywanych przez pewne radykalne ugrupowania. W artykule autor przybliża definiowanie fundamentalizmu, wskazując genezę fun-damentalizmu religijnego. Co więcej, stara się wyjaśnić jego współczesną istotę i charakter.

    The pedagogical reflection on methods and condition of creating of an open religious identity of youth was presented by the author in the perspective of the current social situation, rather unfavourable towards activities in the field of religion especially bearing traits of the openness to the Otherness. Such a situation has been defined by the philosopher and poet Friedrich Hölderlin as the “destitute time”. Therefore, the author has made this quote of Friedrich Hölderlin and Rainer Rilke as necessary philosophical context of the reflection. In a search of the complete overview and description of the open religious identity and determinants of the process of its forming, the author focuses on the selected questions such as religious fundamentalism, sense of self-sufficiency in religious dimension, reflectivity and parrhesia which in in an essential way, positive or negative, determine the discussed process.
    Pedagogiczny namysł nad sposobami i kondycją kreowania otwartej tożsamości religijnej młodzieży autorka umieściła w perspektywie aktualnej sytuacji społecznej, raczej niesprzyjającej aktywnościom w obszarze religii, zwłaszcza noszącym znamiona otwartości na Inność. Sytuacja taka została nazwana przez filozofa i poetę, Friedricha Hölderlina „czasem marnym”. Dlatego autorka punktem wyjścia swojej refleksji uczyniła cytaty Friedricha Hölderlina i Rainera Rilkego stanowiące niezbędny filozoficzny kontekst refleksji. W poszukiwaniu pełniejszego oglądu i deskrypcji otwartej tożsamości religijnej oraz uwarunkowań procesu jej kształtowania autorka zwraca uwagę tylko na wybrane kwestie, jak fundamentalizm religijny, poczucie samowystarczalności w wymiarze religijnym, refleksyjność i parezja, które w istotny sposób, pozytywny bądź negatywny, warunkują omawiany proces.

    Artykuł prezentuje fundamentalizm jako zagrożenie dla społeczeństwa obywatelskiego w oparciu o nauczanie Benedykta XVI. Współcześnie wskazuje się na liczne tendencje do myślenia w kategoriach fundamentalizmu, obecne w sferze religii, kultury, polityki, a nawet gospodarki. Największy rozgłos zdobywa jednak fundamentalizm religijny, skutkujący często atakami terrorystycznymi islamistów. W nauczaniu Benedykta XVI pojawiają się liczne wskazówki, a nawet analizy zjawiska fundamentalizmu, który zagraża współczesnej koncepcji społeczeństwa obywatelskiego. Kościół stoi zawsze na pozycji ochrony osoby w zakresie godności osobowej oraz praw człowieka, gdyż takie stanowisko jest koniecznym warunkiem rozwoju, także w wymiarze globalnym. Równie kluczowe w tym kontekście jest stwierdzenie, iż religijność człowieka, ukierunkowana na Boga będącego miłością, z założenia wyklucza przemoc, stwarzając tym samym przestrzeń dla kształtowania prawdziwie ludzkich odniesień.
    The article, which is based on the teaching of Benedict XVI, presents fundamentalism as a threat to civil society. Nowadays there are numerous tendencies of thinking in the terms of fundamentalism which are present in the sphere of religion, culture, politics and even economy. However, the form of religious fundamentalism that frequently results in terrorist attacks by Islamists enjoys the greatest publicity. In the teaching of Benedict XVI, there are numerous indications and deeper analyses of the phenomenon of fundamentalism, which endangers the contemporary concept of civil society. The Church always protects a person when it comes to personal dignity and human rights, as this attitude is a necessary condition of development, also in the global dimension. In this context it is equally important to state that human religiosity is directed towards God who is love, and this assumption excludes violence, thus creating a space for shaping truly human relations.

    The article deals with the legal implications of multiculturalism, in the context of globalization and the “clash of civilizations”. From a European-democratic perspective, we analyze several practical dilemmas – the consequence of a “collision” between diverse normative systems: their respective standards, views of morality, religion, costumes, among others. Confronting many different and, sometimes, competing values – inevitable in pluralistic societies – represents a huge challenge for government authorities and, particularly, lawmakers. The idea of multiculturalism which, until now, has been an inherent element of European legal systems, nowadays faces a serious crisis. In this context, there is an urgent need to implement appropriate policies and laws able to protect diverse cultural groups and to ensure efficient instruments, in order to eliminate the unwanted effects of multiculturalism, such as extremism and terrorism.

    Tożsamość kulturowa może być analizowana z różnych perspektyw: antropologii kulturowej i społecznej, kulturoznawstwa, socjologii i innych nauk o człowieku i kulturze. W niniejszym studium podjęto refleksję nad tożsamością kulturową człowieka w ujęciu katolickiej teologii moralnej, a precyzyjniej: nad czynnikami mogącymi mieć wpływ na jej utratę. W pierwszej kolejności ukazano współczesny indyferentyzm religijny, odczytany jako swoistego rodzaju zagrożenie dla tożsamości w wymiarze wertykalnym. Indyferentyzm religijny wraz z pluralizmem na płaszczyźnie aksjologicznej oraz hybrydyzacją kultury jawi się – używając podziału właściwego dla klasycznej aretologii – jako swoistego rodzaju wypaczenie per defectum tożsamości kulturowej, zaś opisany w dalszej kolejności fundamentalizm oraz nacjonalizm jako wypaczenie per excessum. W ostatniej części zaprezentowano związek między wiernością tożsamości kulturowej a deficytami współczesnej demokracji.
    Cultural identity can be analyzed from different perspectives: cultural and social anthropology, cultural studies, sociology and other human and cultural sciences. The present study undertakes a reflection on the cultural identity of man in the view of Catholic moral theology and, more precisely, on the factors that may induce its loss. In the first place, the author discusses the issue of contemporary religious indifferentism, read as a specific type of threat to human identity in vertical dimension. Religious indifferentism along with pluralism on axiological level are manifested as, to use the classification proper for classic aretology, a specific type of distortion of cultural identity per defectum, while fundamentalism and nationalism, described in the later part of the article, as distortion per excessum. Finally, the study presents the relationship between fidelity to cultural identity and deficits of modern democracy.

    The aim of this article is to examine the phenomena of inclusion and fundamentalism within Niklas Luhmann’s system theory of religion in a globalized society. According to system theory, functional differentiation, rising contingency, and progressing specialization of decision-making centers within western society have all lead to the emergence of a modem and, subsequently, globalized society. Due to changes in the social system, followed by the process of secularization, religion has differentiated itself into an autonomous social subsystem. In effect, it has lost its central position as a value provider and encompassing normative system. Rising religious inclusion and privatization, as well as the emergence of religious fundamentalism, are seen as two opposing, yet complimentary, processes, each emerging as a consequence of modernization and globalization. Inclusion is understood as an individual’s ability to chose between a variety of possible religious options, without the threat of facing any religious or social sanctions. Conversely, fundamentalism is seen as a radical reaction to the process of modernization and progressing differentiation of the social and religious system. From Luhmann’s perspective, both of these processes can lead to the disintegration of religious and, as a consequence, the social system as a whole.

    Muslim presence in Europe is an uneven and unfinished process. Muslim minority is visibly divided between supporters of the moderate, liberal version of Islam and the followers of radical version – Salafism, which is calling to make an effort to restore the meaning of Islam. The advantage wins Muslim fundamentalism. It is internally diverse divided into the following trends: political Salafism, which organises its activities around a political logic, the second is predicative Salafism, which bases its actions on preaching and religious teachings (da’wah), and finally revolutionary, jihadi Salafism. This is a challenge to the European security, as well to Muslims, whose unity (ummah) is disrupted. In the European Islam there is a war over the control of the community.

    The first part of the article describes the events in 2004 connected with the organization of the festival 'Culture for Tolerance' and negative reaction of many people towards it. The material used consisted of and interviews with organizers, participant observation, video recording press relations. The second part describes positions of experiences of the main actors of events: Campaign Against Homophobia; Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University; Piotr Skarga Association of Christian Culture; All-Poland Youth; football fans of two Cracovian clubs; Roman-Catholic Church; the state; mass media. The final part contains in the analysis of the events within several different theoretical contexts: the concepts of homosexuality, gender, nationalism and globalization. Concluding remarks elaborate on the character of Polish civil society which is still a holistic ethical monolith rather than a liberal arena for discussion. The gay and lesbian movement is the most spectacular force that tries to change the situation.
    Pierwszą część artykułu stanowi opis wydarzeń z 2004 roku, związanych z organizowaniem Festiwalu „Kultura dla Tolerancji” i negatywnych nań reakcji wielu środowisk. Opis sporządzono na podstawie wywiadów z zainteresowanymi, obserwacji uczestniczącej, zapisu filmowego i relacji prasowych. Następnie prezentowani są główni zbiorowi aktorzy wydarzeń: Kampania Przeciw Homofobii, Instytut Socjologii UJ, Stowarzyszenie Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. P. Skargi, Młodzież Wszechpolska, kibice krakowskich klubów piłkarskich, Kościół rzymskokatolicki, państwo, mass media. Przedstawione są ich racje oraz doświadczenia ich przedstawicieli związane z wydarzeniami. Kolejna część tekstu zawiera analizę wydarzeń w kilku teoretycznych kontekstach: koncepcji homoseksualizmu, płci kulturowej, nacjonalizmu i globalizacji. Uwagi końcowe zawierają wnioski na temat charakteru społeczeństwa obywatelskiego w Polsce, które jest ciągle holistycznym monolitem etycznym, a nie liberalnym forum do dyskusji. Ruch gejów i lesbijek jest najbardziej spektakularną siłą, która stara się zmienić ten stan rzeczy.

    Fundamentalizm i religijny ekstremizm nie jest związany wyłącznie z islamem, choć w tej religii jest obecnie najlepiej rozpoznawalny. Ideologia fundamentalistyczna nie ogranicza się jednak tylko do świata islamu. Fundamentalizm religijny ma swoje miejsce również w chrześcijaństwie, judaizmie, hinduizmie czy sikhizmie. Głównym elementem wszystkich jego odmian jest idea władzy Boga na ziemi, a droga do jej urzeczywistnienia prowadzi „prawdziwych” wiernych do zbawienia. Dla fundamentalistycznych przywódców głoszone idee są jednocześnie instrumentem do osiągania celów politycznych, łącznie z przejęciem władzy nad wybraną społecznością współwyznawców lub państwem. Fundamentalistyczni ideolodzy wyznaczają wyraźny podział na „swoich” i „obcych”, czyli „wierzących” i „niewierzących”. Inne grupy ludności lub inaczej myślący ludzie tej samej religii są uznawani za heretyków, zdrajców i demonizowani jako wrogowie. Zwalczani są przy użyciu metod określanych szeroko rozumianym pojęciem działań terrorystycznych motywowanych religijnie, walk zbrojnych lub czystek etnicznych. We współczesnym, zglobalizowanym świecie, któremu towarzyszą ekonomiczne dysproporcje, wyobcowanie i społeczne wykluczenie wielu grup ludności upowszechniają się radykalne postawy prowadzące do nienawiści i przemocy. Coraz wyraźniej rysujący się podział świata umacnia te tendencje, a wszelkie próby zwalczania dużych organizacji terrorystycznych o zabarwieniu religijnym przybiera postać wojny religijnej, która zaostrza się w przypadku pomocy lub ingerencji obcych wyznaniowo sił zbrojnych. Nasuwa się stąd wniosek, że problem ekstremizmu powinni rozwiązywać sami wyznawcy danej religii, lecz do tego potrzebna jest wola przywódców duchowych, którzy, często łącząc funkcje religijne i polityczne, nie są skłonni do współdziałania z władzami państwowymi. Obowiązkiem tych ostatnich jest natomiast zapewnienie obywatelem bezpieczeństwa oraz wzbudzenie ufności i gotowości do współdziałania przy neutralizowaniu przyczyn i zagrożeń wynikających z religijnego ekstremizmu. Terroryzm natomiast powinien być zwalczany przez państwa wszelkimi dostępnymi środkami, niezależnie od religijnych czy ideologicznych konotacji.
    Fundamentalism and religious extremism are not associated exclusively with Islam, but nowadays they are the most recognizable in this religion. The fundamentalist ideology, however, is not limited only to the world of Islam. Religious fundamentalism can be found also in Christianity Judaism, Hinduism or Sikhism. The main element of the fundamentalism in all its variations is the idea of the God’s power over the Earth, and the road leading the „true” believers to the salvation. Ideas preached by fundamentalist leaders are at the same time an instrument of achieving political goals, including the takeover of the selected fellow community or state. The fundamentalist ideologies set a clear distinction between „believers” and „unbelievers”. Other population groups or otherwise-minded people of the same religion are considered to be heretics, traitors and demonized as enemies. As such they are combated by using methods of religiously motivated terrorism, armed struggle or ethnic cleansing. In the globalized world full of economic disparities, social exclusion and alienation of many social groups radical attitudes spread, leading to hatred and violence. Still more clearly drawn the world’s division reinforces these trends, and any attempt to fight major religion motivated terrorist organizations takes a form of the religious war, which is exacerbated in the case of any foreign intervention carried out by armed forces of another religion background. Hence arises the conclusion that the problem of religious extremism should be resolved by followers of the same religion, but for this the will of spiritual leaders is required. Because they often combine religious and political functions, they are not willing to cooperate with the authorities. However it is the authorities’ duty, to provide citizens with security and to inspire confidence and willingness to contribute to the neutralization of the causes and risks of religious extremism. Whereas terrorism must be countered by the states with all available means, regardless of religious or ideological connotations.

    Osiągnięcie jedności jest sprawą całego Kościoła – zarówno wiernych, jak i pasterzy. Troska ta rozciąga się na wszystkich, wedle ich talentów, czy to w codziennym życiu chrześcijańskim, czy też w pracach teologów i historyków. Troska ta ujawnia też do pewnego stopnia istniejącą więź braterstwa między wszystkimi chrześcijanami i przyczynia się do osiągnięcia pełnej i doskonałej jedności, jakiej chce Bóg w swej łaskawości. To stwierdzenie zawarte w Dekrecie o ekumenizmie Unitatis redintegratio II Soboru Watykańskiego przedstawia drogę wszystkich chrześcijan w kierunku jedności jako chrześcijański imperatyw, niezależny od narodowości czy stanu. Przydaje to najwyższego znaczenia ruchowi ekumenicznemu w pluralistycznym społeczeństwie Nigerii, łączącym różne kultury i tradycje, różne sentymenty etniczne i religijne. Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie różnych poziomów ruchu ekumenicznego w Nigerii, jak również granic zaangażowania i wkładu różnych wyznań chrześcijańskich na każdym stopniu ich rozwoju. Opracowanie to stara się też wziąć pod uwagę postawy tych chrześcijan w Nigerii, którzy rzucają wyzwanie, a czasem i kłody, realizacji jedności między chrześcijanami. Niekiedy wynika to z nieznajomości nauczania Kościoła i praktycznych zasad ekumenizmu, z chrześcijańskiego fundamentalizmu i fanatyzmu, dbałości o własne interesy, sentymentów etnicznych i religijnych, które zwykle już spowodowały podziały i wzajemną podejrzliwość wśród ludu Nigerii. Pamiętając, że chrześcijanie są „solą ziemi i światłem świata”, osiągnięcie jedności między chrześcijanami w Nigerii stanie się katalizatorem nastania pokoju, sprawiedliwości i jedności w Nigerii. Z tego też powodu opracowanie to proponuje ekumenizm duchowy i współpracę chrześcijan jako praktyczne kroki do osiągnięcia jedności chrześcijańskiej w Nigerii.
    “The attainment of union is the concern of the whole Church, faithful and shepherds alike. This concern extends to everyone, according to his talent, whether it be exercised in his daily Christian life or in his theological and historical research. This concern itself reveals already to some extent the bond of brotherhood between all Christians and it helps toward that full and perfect unity which God in His kindness wills.” This statement from the Second Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism, presents journey towards unity of all Christian as imperative for all Christians irrespective of nationality and status. This makes ecumenical movement most relevant in a pluralistic society like Nigeria with diverse cultures and tradition, different ethnic and religious sentiments. The objective of the work is to present different stages of ecumenical movement in Nigeria as well as the extent of participation and contributions of various Christian denominations at each stage of its development. This work also aims at considering those attitudes of many Christians in Nigeria that pose as challenge or stumbling block to the realization of unity among Christians. Some of which are ignorance of the teaching and practical principles of ecumenism, Christian fundamentalism and fanaticism, personal-interest, religious and ethnic sentiments which ordinarily had already created a division and mutual suspicion among Nigerian people. Bearing in mind that Christians are “salt of the earth and light of the world,” the actualization of unity among Christians in Nigeria will serve as catalyst to full realization of peace, justice and unity in Nigeria. Hence, this work propose spiritual ecumenism and Christian cooperation as practical steps to the attainment of Christian unity in Nigeria.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zawartych w książce Do raju i z powrotem refleksji i uwag autora, Jana Józefa Szczepańskiego, będących efektem jego podróży w 1961 r. na Bliski Wschód i do zachodnich Indii. Szczepański, pisarz, scenarzysta, a z wykształcenia indianista (ukończył orientalistykę na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim), konfrontuje swoje wyobrażenia o Oriencie z realiami, jakie obserwuje na miejscu. Swoją uwagą obejmuje przejawy modernizacji krajów arabskich z jednej strony, z drugiej zaś – islamskiej ortodoksji i fundamentalizmu religijnego. Staje się to okazją do porównań dotyczących źródeł różnic cywilizacyjnych i kulturowych między zlaicyzowaną Europą a nadal religijnym Wschodem.
    The purpose of this article is to present the reflections and remarks of the writer Jan Józef Szczepański contained in his book Do raju i z powrotem [To Paradise and Back], which resulted from his 1961 trip to the Middle East and the western India. Szczepański, an author, screenwriter and Indianist by education (he graduated in Oriental studies from Jagiellonian University), confronts his ideas about the Orient with the reality he observes on the spot. He focuses on the signs of modernization in Arab countries on the one hand, and Islamic orthodoxy and religious fundamentalism on the other. This becomes an opportunity to compare the sources of civilizational and cultural differences between secularized Europe and the still religious East.

    Opis:
    Benedict XVI, identifying himself as “the apostle of dialogue and the man of peace”, makes an important contribution to the interreligious dialogue. The Pope indicates, that this dialogue cannot be treated as a “temporary choice”, but the future depends on it, it is a “life necessity”. In development of this dialogue today there appear some obstacles. One of the main goals of the interreligious dialogue is to seek the truth together, and the essential source of numerous impediments preventing it is an erroneous way of approaching truth. It can take a form of relativism, which denies existence of any truth, or a form of religious fundamentalism that claims the right to impose it. In order to prevent interreligious dialogue from leading to religious syncretism and to confusion in those who participate in it, it is necessary to respect certain basic rules. Benedict XVI lists the following as the most important ones: rule of reciprocity, rule of keeping own identity and accepting identity of interlocutor, respecting every human person and uniting dialogue with proclamation of the Gospel.
