Since the middle of the 1980s French Canadian novelist Sylvain Trudel has constantly put his characters in contentious situations from which they try to escape by way of creating alternative worlds at the same time real and fantastical. This device takes the characters away from their trite everyday life and into a symbolic and mystical universe. The synthème seems to be fit into that symbolic frame. Through the child’s point of view – which seems then to become some sort of secret language – each object belonging to the realm of the profane becomes tinted with a sacred meaning. Synthème and symbol would then be considered as vehicles for the sacred, that which shows through Sylvain Trudel’s novels.

As a « relational concept », alterity can only be defined in opposition to what sociologists call a « referential group », an entity which dictates political, religious or cultural norms in a concrete society. Our article will first explain the difference between simple « diversity » and real « alterity », which is perceived as a potential source of threat by the majority society. Using concrete figures from 19th and 20th century Quebec novels, we will illustrate various types of alterity and the general evolution of Canadian mentality in relation to various minorities.

Claude-Henri Grignon’s novel Un homme et son péché presents the life of French Canadian colonial settlers of the Laurentides region at the end of XIXth century. It depicts a realistic image of the colonisation period of Quebec history. The novel is at the origin of a media series that englobes a radio adaptation, three filmic adaptations, theater adaptations, a comic, and two television series. The aim of this article is to discuss the vision of colonisation by analysing two television series based on Un homme et son péché: Les Belles Histoires des pays d’en haut broadcast from 1956 to 1970 and Les Pays d’en haut broadcast from 2016 to 2019 on ICI Radio-Canada Télé 1. The analysis will try to trace modifications inherent to the process of adaptation on different levels (protagonists, representation of space, ideological discourse) and their influence on the vision of the colonisation period.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate, based on the example of two Canadian journals, how memory remains alive after the events of 1755, when the deportation of the Acadians took place. In spite of the 250 years which have passed since the event, the French-language press in Canada remains extremely sensitive to the topic of the expulsion of the French from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the British, and it frequently expresses its attachment to the memory of the Acadians.

In his novel entitled Gazole (2001), Bertrand Gervais, a Quebec writer, takes up the issue of suicide and its psychological and social impact. The main character, Lancelot Tremblay, whose job is to write lyrics for a rock band Le Livre des Morts (Eng. The Book of the Dead), hangs himself in his apartment. His naked body with an erect penis is discovered by the other members of the band Gazole and Pyramide. Their reactions to this deadly act are, however, different. Submerging himself in mourning, Pyramide withdraws emotionally from his relationship with his girlfriend Gazole, who, deeply touched by her partner’s newly developed indifference to her, delves into an investigation into the causes of Lancelot’s suicide. Being increasingly fascinated by the figure of Lancelot, Gazole reconstructs a new picture of him. Pieces of memories conjured up by those who knew Lancelot, like incomplete pieces of a puzzle, make Gazole form a romantic image of his absence. The mysterious and tragic figure of the young poet who chose to extinguish himself fires the woman’s imagination, who fantasizes about a sentimental and erotic relationship with him. An emptiness created by the suicide forces the woman to ponder over the nature of death, an eternal absence. Obsessed with this imaginary presence of Lanelot, Gazole has to set herself free from its influence, which causes her to flirt with a razorblade in a bathtub. The foray into Lancelot’s suicide gives Gazole an insight into her own true identity. Gazole discovers her internal feminine strength and frees herself from the shackles of Lancelot’s mental and sexual hold.

RESUME | Parmi un grand nombre de phenomenes lies a la traduction, caracteris- tiques pour le Canada, on peut detecter « la traduction au feminin » ou l’acte de re-crea- tion. Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood, la traductrice des textes de feministes quebecoises, y compris ceux de Lise Gauvin, dont le roman/essai intitule Lettres dune autre (1984) elle a traduit vers l’anglais en 1989 (Letters from an Other) en est une des plus eminentes repre- sentantes. Sa traduction a suscite de vives polemiques, car — selone les critiques — la tra¬ductrice a trop explique au lecteur, a utilise un nombre excessif de notes et a trop feminise le texte par rapport a l’original. L’activite traduisante de Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood demontre comment une approche creative a la traduction la rend plus visible et de quelle maniere la feminisation du texte d’arrivee cree un espace propice a une expression femi- nine dans un monde reel.
Among many translation activities characteristic for Canada, a “feminine translation”, meaning an act of re-creation, is particularly worth mentioning. One of its representatives is Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood, a translator of the texts of Quebec feminists, including Lise Gauvin’s Lettres d’une autre (1984) translated into English in 1989 (Letters from an Other). De Lotbinière-Harwood’s translation caused controversy, as - according to the critics - she explained to much to a reader, inserted too many footnotes and feminized the text more than the original. The translation activity of de Lotbnière-Harwood proves how, by using the creative approach to translation, the act of translation itself becomes visible, and the feminization of the target text creates a space for female expression also in a real world.
Wśród wielu zjawisk związanych z przekładem charakterys¬tycznych dla Kanady znajduje się „przekład w rodzaju żeńskim”, czyli akt ponownego tworzenia. Jedną z jego reprezentantek jest Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood, tłumaczka tekstów quebeckich feministek, w tym Lise Gauvin, której tekst zatytułowany Lettres dune autre (1984) przełożyła na język angielski w 1989 roku (Letters from an Other). Swoim przekładem tłumaczka wywołała kontrowersje, zbyt wiele — zdaniem krytyków — wy¬jaśniając czytelnikowi, umieszczając za dużo przypisów oraz feminizując tekst bardziej niż oryginał. Działalność przekładowa S. de Lotbiniere-Harwood udowadnia, w jaki sposób, poprzez wykorzystanie przez tłumacza twórczego podejścia do tłumaczenia, sam akt przekładu staje się widoczny, a feminizacja tekstu docelowego tworzy przestrzeń dla kobiecej ekspresji także w realnym świecie.

Literary texts written in French-speaking areas out of France very often represent real challenges for translators, because they have to deal with a diatopically marked language and with a large number of realia which require the implementation of specific strategies for translate in the target language. In this article, we will try to understand the strategies used by Italian translators when translating the linguistic specificities of Quebec literary works in Italian. The practice of translation can orient the vision (or reception) of a Quebec literature in Italy which appears at first sight to be hermetic because of its linguistic regionalisms. Do Italian translations of Quebec literature require revisions?

The main aim of this article is to show how Gaétan Soucy’s 1998 bestselling novel The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches both extends and complicates the Canadian Gothic tradition. The first part focuses onCanada as a “haunted culture,” and attempts to identify the ghosts which hauntCanada and make themselves manifest in the nation’s gothic literature. I ponder the postcolonial character of Canadian Gothic, and reflect on the representations of monstrous nature inCanada’s early fiction. A short section is devoted to the characteristics of French-Canadian Gothic. The second part of my article proposes a reading of Soucy’s novel which concentrates on gothic transgressions the story revolves around. One of my assumptions is that the novel invites ecocritical and ecofeminist interpretations, and that its representations of nature also reveal the subversive character of the text whose narrator, by her own admission, locates herself on the threshold of things.

The purpose of this article is to present how the French in Canada preserved their cultural and linguistic identity and distinguished themselves from the English in North America which none of the European colonies at the time, not even socially and economically wellorganized New Netherland were able to maintain their independence. Francophones also managed to prove that nowadays the French play the indispensable and dominant role in building Canada’s identity. Today the provinces can have their own language program providing it complies with the federal policy of bilingualism. In 1976 during Révolution tranquille Quebec passed Loi 101 where French is declared its sole official language. Therefore the province introduced the language policy which was contrary to the Canadian constitution. These are the most important differences that set Canada apart from the United States. This also explains complex nature of Canadian language policies based on equal status of the two official languages in the institutions of the Parliament and government of Canada and also both successful and unsuccessful attempts to establish language policy in the Canadian provinces.

The surrealist Quebec poet, painter and artists’ books editor Roland Giguère has based his entire work on a dialogue between poetry and visual arts (painting, serigraphy, typography) in order to experiment the iconicity of writing. He has composed a graphic poetry made of plastic and iconic signs as well as graphic signs, playing with the semiotic ambiguity to create poetic effects and sense. His polysemiotic experiment of the poem based on a specific use of serigraphy has impacted the readability, but has paradoxically shown a new kind of poeticity and the expressiveness of writing. The aim of this article is to establish how the writing subversion and the semiotic experiment allowed by an original use of serigraphy creates poetry.

Marie-Claire Blais seeks to innovate, throughout her career, her 'antimimétique' writing. Her extensive pentalogy - Soifs (1995), Dans la foudre et la lumière (2001), Augustino et le choeur de la destruction (2005), Naissance de Rebecca à l’ère des tourments (2008), Mai au bal des prédateurs (2010) – offers a complex existential questioning of the actual situation of the man. The problem of Evil and Good, which is in the heart of questions and answers, is treated with an original narration, transforming Virginia Woolf’s stream of consciousness. This innovation, however, is rooted in the tradition, namely its baroque poetics and its community orientation, both attached to the affirmation / negation of the catholic heritage that marked Quebec.

Preserved in Quebec City, the French canvas entitled France Bringing Faith to the Huron-Wendats of New France, executed around 1666, constitutes a central piece of Canadian art history painted during the French colonial period. Espousing an iconography adapted to the New World, this painting presents an Indigenous figure in its foreground. The man, with a tanned complexion and black hair, whose naked body is dissimulated by a single blue and gold piece of clothing, faces a female character having European features, adorned with noble fabrics and precious jewellery. The scene, set in nature, evokes the grandeur and wilderness of North America. A two-masted French merchant ship floating on the majestic expanse of water reinforces this impression. This painting, obviously, illustrates the Europeans’ arrival on this territory in the seventeenth century, and the encounters between the French and Indigenous peoples. However, the representation is also rich in motifs that are likely to attract attention and curiosity: the mise en abyme (the painting within the painting), the celestial figures, and the coat of arms at the bow of the vessel constitute such examples. In this regard, the research studies of our Canadian art history predecessors – to which we are indebted – have enabled us to, first, retrace the painting’s history and, second, clarify its interpretive elements in relation to the spiritual and contextual dimensions specific to New France, in order to shed light on some of its well-kept secrets.
