Giftedness and nonconformist behaviour have become a source of great interest in both the public sphere and in educational research. This is related to the fact that nonconformity (as a personality and character trait) has been, and still is, an indispensable element of the creative transformation of societies in the public sphere.1 The paper presents results of research conducted in the years 2014-2016 on the level of nonconformity of gifted students in Poland and England. The research, conducted with the Creative Behaviour Questionnaire III (CBQ III), was undertaken among 30 purposefully selected students from the University of Silesia (Poland) as well as Oxford University (England). By considering both the influence of nonconformists on the transformations taking place in the public sphere, and also the results of my research, I will examine whether nonconformity is a potential source of strength or weakness to the public sphere. In this context nonconformist is a person who does not conform to a generally accepted pattern of thought or action.

Opis:
This article discusses the copyleft concept in the context of peer production in the context of the changes that have taken place in the public sphere. As indicated by some studies (eg RD Putnam’s work), the traditional public sphere is in atrophy, and the dialogue between public actors has been transferred to the digital platform. This allows public actors to become independent of place and time, and the relative anonymity and allows them to change the role and scope of participation in public life. The dialogue takes place in the framework of the “new” public sphere and is reflected in the peer production process, which is based on a common pool of digital assets. Proper conduction of this process is dependent on institutional innovation, which is the copyleft concept. It is defined as a legal structure that gives the licensee or end user unrestricted right to use, modify and reproduce the work – in this case, a peer good, produced in the peer production process. In practice, this concept is a reversal of the basic purpose of copyright, the objective of reducing the possibility of using, modifying or copying of intellectual property. At the same time it uses copyright licenses through the appropriate wording for partner products. It is therefore a form of adaptation of existing institutional governance tools to new needs that have developed in parallel to the formation of the public sphere on the digital platform. The relationships between the “new” public sphere, producing peer production and the role played by the concept of copyleft implies the main objective of this study. It is the presentation of the idea of copyleft, and an indication of its practical application in the peer production process. An additional objective is to demonstrate the impact of the peer production process on a digital public sphere, particularly the exchange of digital information goods. The article discusses the peer production process and also the assumptions and the conditions in which it can take place. It also presents the causes of atrophy of the traditional public sphere and the need to adapt the tools of copyright protection in order to ensure public dialogue. The research studies are based largely on the example of the operating system GNU/Linux and knowledge repository – Wikipedia.org, through which the main assumptions of peer production are presented. The paper also points the practical importance of copyleft in this process and the effects it produces in the development of the relations between the actors of the public sphere. The authors have also analyzed the economic benefits of entities using the peer goods and applying copyleft licenses. This approach allowed to show the situations in which it is preferable to abandon copyrights rather than limit them. Considerations carried out in the article led to the following conclusions. First, the concept of copyleft allows shaping of social relations in the public sphere. Second, this relationships lead to the production of digital information goods, such as software and knowledge repositories. Third, the Internet eliminates restrictions on the choice of the role of the participants of the “new” public sphere. Finally, peer production affects the economy by increasing the overall efficiency due to the fact that it can be used by entrepreneurs to increase the profitability of the production process.

Business ethics is usually seen as set of communicates addressed to representatives of the sphere of economy. Meanwhile this attitude towards the kind of knowledge seams to be false. There are two points which justify this opinion. First of them concerns the relation between legal and ethical perspectives useful to evaluate business phenomena. Both axiological systems (in indicated background) are complementary to one another. It tends to the second argument. The relation between low and ethics makes necessary to indicate the public sphere as the place, where managers together with citizens and politicians – day by day – take part in debate about rules of social and economic correctness each of them.

The article focuses on the online communication on Polish Facebook and Twitter around issues related to mortgage loans in Swiss francs. Based on 20k posts retrieved from both Facebook and Twitter, we found the most active actors and the most common topics appearing on those micro-public spheres. It was revealed that actors with institutional affiliation and those who are not affiliated discuss different problems and share dissimilar content related to Swiss franc debts. It was also found that certain categories of actors may influence online discussions on both social networking sites by promoting specific content in order to pursue their institutional interests. Finally, the diversity of topics and problems discussed by the two categories of actors identified on Facebook and Twitter suggest that Swiss franc mortgage holders are a good example of “connective action” with no clear identity or community traits that led to favourable judgment of the European Court of Justice.

In this article I will attempt to answer the question of why systemic solutions to (social) problems of Polish economic migrants fail to be instituted in Poland by means of social negotiations. Therefore, while emphasising the social dimension of Polish migration, I briefly present its specificity and point to some associated threats. Referring to the category labelled as social problem, I demonstrate the nature of obstacles which prevent a debate on Polish migration in the area of social negotiations from taking root on public ground in Poland. I also refer to the mechanisms of degradation of the public sphere as those which are preventing the development of systemic solutions to the problems of Polish migrant workers by means of social negotiations.

When Javier Sicilia’s son was killed by cartel assassins in 2011, he transformed into a civic activist, with a mass following sufficiently large for Time Magazine to recognize him in 2011 as one of its “Protestors of the Year.” His very success mobilizing public opinion against cartel violence overshadows his more fundamental role as an advocate for deliberative democracy in the Americas. Sicilia’s historical importance lies in his recognition that only civic dialogue within the transnational public sphere that includes Mexico and the United States can heal the social pathologies unleashed by globalization and by the war on drugs. His ultimate achievement has been to dramatize what would be required of citizens to realize the democratic ideals that both countries profess as the foundations of their national identities.

Opis:
There has been a long-standing discussion in Poland about the efficient and effective functioning of the social welfare and integration system. The transformations it has been undergoing for years in connection with the possibilities of benefiting from the EU funds and as a results of its attempted reforms and rationalisation demonstrate that the issue of professionalising the social worker profession is actually of little interest to anybody, despite the fact that this is a regulated profession with quite a strong presence in the current scientific discourse. If performed in a professional manner, methodical social work is a very important tool which may significantly contribute to increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of social interventions, thereby improving the quality of the public sphere in this segment. In this context, an important role is played by evaluation, understood as analysing the value of a specific action – with reference to social projects and programmes. Of particular importance here is the latest generation evaluation, which makes use of action research, thereby increasing the chances to raise the level of social participation and simultaneously reduce the problem of social exclusion. On the other hand, it is necessary to note the crucial role that evaluation may play in reinforcing and sustaining the professional identity of social workers, especially in the face of the constant changes and reforms of the social welfare system.

Celem artykułu jest próba określenia cech i zakresu nowej sfery publicznej, wskazania jej uczestników, a także implikacji wynikających z jej funkcjonowania. Główna teza opracowania zawiera się w następującym stwierdzeniu: nowa sfera publiczna umożliwia łatwiejsze zaangażowanie społeczne w kwestie publiczne i daje lepsze możliwości agregacji preferencji, co powinno skutkować większą efektywnością działania sektora publicznego. Pojęcie nowej sfery publicznej zostało zaproponowane w opozycji do tradycyjnej – mieszczańskiej, zdefiniowanej przez J. Habermasa. Jej najistotniejszą cechą jest wykorzystanie sieci Internetu, a w szczególności jego asynchronicznych cech do budowania więzi, grup zainteresowań i grup nacisku, wpływających na zakres przedmiotowy sektora publicznego.
The aim of this paper is to define the characteristics and scope of the new public sphere, indicate its participants, as well as the implications of its operation. The main thesis can be summarized in the following statement: the new public sphere facilitates involvement in public issues and provides better opportunities for preference aggregation, which should result in greater efficiency of the public sector. The concept of the "new public sphere" has been proposed in opposition to the traditional, bourgeois public sphere, defined by J. Habermas. Its most important attribute is that it uses the Internet, in particular its asynchronous features, to build relationships, interest groups, and pressure groups, influencing the scope of the public sector.

The article is focused on the constructing of national identity by the authorities of the Republic of Tajikistan by using such elements located in the public space of Tajik cities as monuments or billboards. Referring to certain values and historic symbols, they serve to build a specific vision of the Tajik nation and its history. For example, one of the key characters of national narration is the Iranian ruler Isma’il Samani (9th/10th century), today promoted as the “father” of the Tajik nation. Of course, some of these concepts appeared as early as the Soviet era or directly after the collapse of the USSR, but now they are of specific nature, connected with the social and political situation of the country. Using Manuel Castells’ terms, the analysed national identity may be referred to as legitimising – serving to consolidate the current power and domination.

The last two decades have faced an intense, and in its essence – revolutionary, development of new information technologies, especially of the Internet, which fundamentally changes political, economic, and social life. The new situation that results from this Internet boom requires redefinition of a number of concepts, including the notion of “public sphere”. The purpose of our work is to describe the contemporary public sphere in the context of the virtual space. The article opens with a framework of the concept of the public sphere, and a short historical outline of its twentieth-century theory. Then, the main trends in the Web activism are presented along with a brief description of social and political campaigns taking place in the virtual world.

Opis:
This article is inspired by Georg Simmel’s formal sociology and written in his characteristic essay style. The article is about the representation relation viewed as a form of social interaction. Contrary to approaches which are dominant in the literature, the author argues that representation is a trilateral relation: the representative always represents the representee before an audience, even if this audience is not always easy to define. The same, paradoxically, can be said about the representee. In its pure forms, the object of representation may be the very presence of the representee, the representee’s will or his/her interest and mutual expectations among the three parties will vary depending on what is being represented. Many representation relations only become such relations ex post; they are initiated not in the act of authorization but in the act of usurpation which is legalized and institutionalized not only by the representee but also by the audience. For this reason, the difference between representation and usurpation is often fluid and fuzzy. The representation relation, as it is understood in this article, is one of the main forms of social interaction because thanks to this relation people who cannot appear personally in the public sphere for various reasons can nevertheless make an appearance.

The aim of this paper is to compare the understanding of the notion of representation in the musicological and sociological (sociology of music) perspectives. Musicologists interpret the phenomenon of representation in reference to the communicative potential of music, its ability to transmit meaning, musical imagination, and cultural practice. “Representation” is the key concept in the semiotics of music, and ethnomusicology. For the sociologists of music, “representation” is a notion usually connected with symbolic interaction. The most important researchers in this area were: Samuel Gilmore (who concentrated on concert production), and David Grazian (dealing with the question of authenticity in culture and art). In a wide context of different musicological and sociological analyses and surveys, this article is only a modest summary of two articles: Roger Scruton’s Representation in Music [1976] (which gave the first impulse to the consideration of representation in musicology), and Naomi Miyamoto’s Concerts and the Public Sphere in Civil Society... [2013], (in which she argues that “the correct phrase is not «representation» but «re-presentation»: the act of continually showing something to the public”).

The present essay aims to reflect on the questions of how the BBC news website discussion forum Have your say is organized and to what extent it can be considered as a transnational or global public sphere for public deliberation. In order to do so, one must firstly look at this discussion forum in terms of its structure, so that we can comprehend in a descriptive and formal way what is Have your say. Then, to try to understand and suggest what exactly Have your say is in terms of the possibility of being a global public sphere for public deliberation, one must tackle into a reflection that encompasses the concepts of transnational/global public sphere (Habermas, 1996; Castells, 2008), public deliberation (Pateman, 1970; Drvzek, 2000; Abelson et al., 2003), as well as some mediation/mediatization paradigms. The goal of this essay is to provide an objective academic reflection by attempting to frame this specific online phenomenon within the concepts above mentioned, to ultimately argue and prove that online discussion forums such as Have your say are by definition ambivalent.

In this paper we analyze the nascent years of the Polish public sphere during the years before and after the 1905 Revolution. We assert that it was a moment of clash between, on the one hand, the intelligentsia and its de facto bourgeois vision of politics, and on the other a rising proletarian counter-public. The popular unrest initiated a massive upsurge of workers into the process of mass politics. As we argue, this situation shocked the elites, attached to their utopian vision of the Polish people, “enlightened” from above by the intelligentsia. Consequently, their reaction was ambivalent, if not reluctant. The intelligentsia’s attitude was growingly tainted with a conservative fear of the masses, which inhibited the development of plebeian constituencies and forms of political articulation. This posed a cornerstone for the future layering of the public sphere, leading to what we call its pathogenesis. It produced outcomes lasting for years, as well as a general contempt towards democratic demands resulting in the impossibility of collective bargaining about popular economic interests.

Opis:
Religious heritage is an important cultural resource for a city. First, cities are at the crossroads of conflicting trends in globalisation. Urban communities are looking for that which makes them universal and unique at the same time. Second, reflection on identity in relation to the heritage and history of a city reveals the multicultural past of Central and Eastern Europe, and shows an image of social change and transformation. Religious heritage plays, therefore, various roles. Places connected with religious identities have symbolic, sacred and artistic meanings. They construct a local universe of meaning; they are an important factor of the local narrative and customs, and they place it in the context of national, regional and ethnic traditions. Churches, temples, and cemeteries are also a sign of memory, this shows not only history but also the contemporary processes of remembering and forgetting. The city of Bielsko-Biała was a cultural and religious mosaic until 1945. Jewish, German and Polish cultures were meeting here everyday with diverse religious belonging and boundaries. Today, the heritage of its religious identity is recognized mainly via monuments, tourist attractions, and cultural events. Only occasionally is the religious heritage of the city analysed in the context of collective identities. Urban space still reflects the complexity of the relationships between religious, national, and regional identities. The purpose of the paper is to describe the variety of functions of religious heritage in a contemporary city on the example of Bielsko-Biała in Poland. The analysis will be based on demographic data from the national census of population, religious community documents, available sociological research outcomes, and historical and contemporary images of the city such as maps and plans, postcards and tourist brochures.

Mediatization is a process that is interesting to a researcher and political scientist for at least two important reasons. On the one hand, it becomes the area of scientific researches, inspirations and reflections, as it encourages to observe the changing frameworks, within which the political entities function, as well as the instruments and means used by them to complete tasks and achieve goals. However, on the other hand, mediatization is also a process which has impact on scientific environments, including also the community of political scientists, which seems to be a particularly interesting collective entity. This environment not only observes and describes the reality of mediatization, but also actively participates in its creation by means of diverse activities of researchers in the media. The author makes an attempt to indicate what are the implications of this media activity of researchers and what dilemmas it raises.

We present our vision of the paradigms changed and of principles in the structure of Public Sphere. We determined four periods of paradigm change: 1991–1994 the period of a new defining Public Service; 1994–1999 the period of enlargement and aggressive structuring of Broadcasting Field; 2000–2007 the period of stabilisation and from 2007 the period of restructuring Public Service Broadcasting. We present our arguments in support of these periods. We offer the study of Estonian Public Service Broadcaster as a model case, one option of development of PSB in the 1990s and 2000s. The empirical basis of the article relies on the results of analyses of radio and TV programmes and audiences carried out by the researchers of University of Tartu.

The aim of this essay is to discuss the state of democracy in Western Europe in the light of an essential change in public spheres towards more dissonance, disconnection, and noise. It is argued that this condition is the unintended consequence of the co-occurrence of two long-term changes in contemporary societies: political culture changes in liberal democracy and changes in communication infrastructures. The interaction of the disruption of democracy and digital communication has implications for public spheres as opportunity structures for democratic speech and institutions. The dynamics of dissonant public spheres have created a new disinformation order, pushing new political actors and communication modes to the fore. These conditions threaten established patterns of authoritative information flows and public debate, which puts contemporarydemocracy under serious stress.

This article aims to present the ways in which the ethics of authority, including government, is collapsing in the contemporary world. The authors demonstrate what consequences numerous abuses and negligence can bring to education and the future. The article is based on reflections supported by actual research, which confirms the theses contained in it. Not only consequences are highlighted, but also ways in which they can be prevented. The most important aspect for the progress of science and the prevention of the depreciation of states is to stand firm against the abuses and appropriations committed by authority figures and to fight against “skimpiness” both in everyday life as well as in science. The current world picture does not promise a happy future. Humanity should strive for greater openness without allowing itself to be subjected to authorities whose actions contradict what they really are.

The concept of “disintermediation” is one of the instruments used to interpret recent developments in politics and communication, especially in digital media. Our thesis is that the concept of “disintermediation” can be considered from two different perspectives. On the one hand, it can be interpreted in the strict historically established sense. On this basis it may be argued that the internet has contributed to “disintermediate” traditional intermediaries, surpassing in part the traditional intermediaries of the twentieth century (such as journalists). On the other, “disintermediation” can be seen in broader, etymological, absolute and non-relative terms. In this sense, the concept of “disintermediation” is no longer appropriate and consequently, based on experimental results and a theoretical analysis of small and large digital intermediaries, we shall propose the concept of “neointermediation.” This article presents the characteristics of neointermediaries, which are concentrating more and more power and are of two sizes: small and large.

The paper argues that the original normativity that provides the basis for Habermas’s model of the public sphere remains untouched at its core, despite having undergone some corrective alterations since the time of its first unveiling in the 1960s. This normative core is derived from two individual claims, historically articulated in the eighteenth-century’s “golden age” of reason and liberty as both sacred and self-evident: (1) the individual right to an unrestrained disposal of one’s private property; and (2) the individual right to formulate one’s opinion in the course of public debate. Habermas perceives the public sphere anchored to these two fundamental freedoms/rights as an arena of interactive opinion exchange with the capacity to solidly and reliably generate sound reason and public rationality. Despite its historical and cultural attachments to the bourgeois culture as its classical setting, Habermas’s model of the public sphere, due to its universal normativity, maintains its unique character, even if it has been thoroughly reformulated by social theories that run contrary to his original vision of the lifeworld, organized and ruled by autonomous rational individuals.

The post-1831 Great Emigration created conditions that were particularly favourable for the development of Polish political thought. This development, however, would have progressed at a considerably slower tempo without the deepening of ideopolitical differences, which put paid to any belief that the émigrés would reach unity. Paradoxically, successive rifts were often justified exactly by the aspiration to implement the concept of ‘unity’. The present article focuses on an issue-based analysis of the tensions between the categories of ‘unity’ and ‘anarchy’, and discusses the mechanism which led to the emergence of the public sphere in exile.

Opis:
As the social media increasingly proliferate and shape media consumption in the present-day world, journalists growingly turn to them in search of direct access to their audiences. Under conditions of restricted media freedom, such access suggests a great asset both to journalists who can engage into an open discussion with a wider public and to the very public. In Ukraine, both trends had been vivid in recent years preceding the Euromaidan: on the one hand, media freedom had been deteriorating, but on the other hand, journalists had been utilizing social media more actively. The article examines how Ukrainian journalists communicated with their audiences via Facebook. In particular, it analyzes patterns of interaction during the 2012 parliamentary election campaign. The results of the study show a substantial level of confusion among Ukrainian journalists regarding the role of public debate on Facebook in 2012–2013. While journalists tended to dismiss users’ comments as mostly irrelevant, they did consider themselves to be providers of important information or viewpoints for the formation of public opinion. Although such interaction between journalists and other users does not satisfy the normative criteria of the public sphere, analysis of content and interviews with journalists showed that Facebook did suggest an evolving alternative public space in Ukraine, in contrast to the ever more controlled space of mainstream media during the presidency of Yanukovych.

W rezultacie w pewnym sensie możemy mówić o obrazowej sferze publicznej, a więc i społeczeństwie spektaklu, w którym dominują obrazy i język obrazowy kosztem idei i słowa analitycznego. Następuje zmiana orientacji dziennikarskiej - miejsce publicysty zajmuje dziennikarski omnibus i showman (showperson), albo, jak go chętnie nazywał Ryszard Kapuściński, media worker.
It is becoming obvious that media coverage - in the broad sense of saturation by the media – encompasses all sectors of society, especially politics. At the same time the media - in the traditional sense of the term, mass media dissemination of messages - are increasingly undergoing the process of “tabloidization”, it means that they adapt the model developed by specific newspapers that are called tabloids for their form and specific content. One of its features is an expressive imagery, both in the figurative sense of language and - literally - as numerous large photographs and graphics, as well as big colorful headlines in the titles of the articles. Television is of course as image dominated medium, however, even there a medium of entertainment is more and more contaminated by tabloid style in all its messages and programs, including traditional political journalism. As a result, we can talk about spectacularization of the the public sphere, it means that the society is dominated by images at the expense of ideas and analitical language. It indicates the change in the orientation of journalism – place of journalist is taken by showman (showperson) or media worker. Whether it is possible to change this trend, and what factors can help here, is a matter for further discussion.

The article presents the entitled fields in the framework of their mutual influence. The notion of the public sphere is valuable for understanding the role that civil society plays in transitional justice processes. However transitional justice often reduces the idea of civil society to NGOs and ignores the social movements and civic engagement in the public realm that can be perceived as integral to the creation of new cases for understanding justice in transition. This fact results in the lack of perception of the civil society place in transitional justice processes. Thus the presented paper is based on hermeneutics, critical discourse analysis and dialogue between various theoretical approaches.

This article argues that the concept of ‘captured media’ is invaluable to a deeper understanding of the roles performed by media systems throughout European liberalism and early democratization of nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This case-study explores the structures of the media system during Portuguese Liberalism (1820–1926) in the scope of the Portuguese empire. The concept of the ‘Imperial Public Sphere’ is applied to show how imperial and colonial elites captured the media system to exercise and spread its political and ideological power. As a methodological approach to analyze the roles performed by press, the case-study relies on the model developed by Hallin and Mancini (2004), which is applied to three empirical cases. The use of the concept ‘captured media’ in the field of media history is a contribution to understanding the political roots of the press during colonialism and its legacy to contemporary media systems in Lusophone countries.

As a first example, I will give an account of the episode of the “Four Iroquois Kings” envoy at Queen Ann’s court in 1710, focusing on the resonance of such a historical encounter in popular texts and iconographic material. As a second example, I analyze the popular story of Inkle and Yarico included in Richard Steele’s The Spectator in 1711, showing its impact on the early Enlightenment reflections on colonial trade. In my conclusion, I examine the role of American natives in the scholarly works of the Scottish Enlightenment, in order to show how they were used as comparable types for the observation of the roots of European civilizations thus justifying the construction of the British imperial hegemony both geopolitical terms and discursive practice.

Opis:
My paper aims to sketch the current condition as well as main challenges of the Polish feminist movement after 1989. It focuses on how gender and women’s issues are approached and conceptualised in Poland today. The paper is enriched by a short outline of history of Polish women struggle for equal rights in especially political and economic dimensions. Importance of commemoration and acknowledgment of history of Polish women struggle is seen as crucial to post-1989 Polish reality in which terms such as democracy, freedom, equality, justice had to be re-invented/re-defined.

Postępująca transformacja cyfrowa sektora usług zabiera przestrzeń do spotkania i dialogu. Zatomizowane społeczeństwo egzystuje w wirtualnym świecie. Sfera publiczna umiera, zostaje tylko pusta przestrzeń.
The aim of the study is to present relationships between public services and the public sphere as key areas for social development. The following research question is: what is the basic link between the public sphere and the public service? The critical literature review in the field of sociology, philosophy and economics was used as a basic research tool. The public space is considered to be an inanimate part of the civilized landscape which can, and should, serve as a kind of a scene for the public sphere which, in contrast to infrastructure, has a societal, non-tangible, and spiritual level to it. Basing on works of J. Habermas, H. Arendt, and Z. Bauman, one can indicate that the public sphere becomes an agora only when it is focused on a community while at the same time neglecting utilitarian factors. The community-oriented nature is, in turn, strictly connected with the very notion of goodness. At this point, the crossing point between the public sphere and the service-oriented sector of industry can be encountered. To provide (a service) means to perform a good deed, which is highlighted by K. Rogoziński. Therefore, servicing, especially in its public variation, had a great potential with regard to saving the quickly disappearing public sphere. Unfortunately, it turns out that the current age, which is officially referred to as a post-industrial one, can be perceived as an re-industrial or even hyper-industrial one. Industrial patterns are being transferred to the service provision-oriented sector on a massive scale. The progressing digital transformation of the service sector takes away the required space for meeting and dialogue. The atomized society exists in a virtual world. The public sphere dies out, leaving an empty space that has to be filled in.

Opis:
The Greek public sphere has historically been regarded by scholars as not having developed as robustly as in the West. Instead, it is dominated by patronage, clientelism, and an ‘iron triangle’ between the government, media, and influential oligarchs, shutting ordinary citizens and independent media out of public discourse. Amid the economic crisis of the 2010s and along with an institutional credibility crisis, many new political and media-related initiatives were launched, all heavily relying on and utilizing social media. To what extent did they demonstrate longevity and help expand the Greek public sphere? Based on interviews from two case studies of the Independent Greeks political party and the enikos.gr news portal-blog, the results show the initiatives were ephemeral or were ‘captured’ by incumbent institutions. Accordingly, the institutional credibility crisis in Greece persists. The results contribute to an understanding of how ‘alternative,’ non-traditional and crisis-related media and political initiatives can become subject to the same forces of capture as traditional institutions.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to describe and assess the political parallelism pertinent to the post-communist Lithuanian mass media; and to show potential risk (for democracy, civil society) of the absence of the political parallelism. Referring to the concepts, communicative democracy is defined as free, open and democratic communication organized around three equally legitimate public sphere actors – politicians, journalists and public opinion, and populism is understood as good, entertaining and effective communication with people, eroding basic functions of the political parties (institution- alization of ideological confl icts) and politicians (representation). The paper provides insights about the dangers to quality of democracy which the free mass media might present when it gets utterly away from political parallelism. Special attention is placed on the tendencies of media personnel to be active in the political life. Th e (universal) contemporary mass society phenomenon, coupled with the (post- communist regional) ill-structured of the post-communist political field and (local) specific traditions of the Lithuanian political culture and public sphere, gave birth to the peculiar absence of the mass- media and politics parallelism in the country. In the conditions of the relative absence of foreign ownership of the mass-media outlets in Lithuania, the local media barons are able to produce and impose their own public-agenda, which hampers development of the civic-minded public sphere and definition of the social and professional responsibilities of the journalism as a profession and as a so- cial category. The Lithuanian mass-media and government relations evolve along the lines of the zero-sum game: they seek to control each other, and at the same time try to avoid being controlled by the other, while any other pattern of inter-relations does not appear as viable and appropriate.

The privacy and the public life co-exist one along the other. Faith is a treasure that should never be hidden. A believer must always share it and inspire others to follow God. These two aspects of faith are highlighted by Pope Benedict XVI in his apostolic letter Porta fidei where the Pontiff underlines the communal character of living the faith which can be grouped into three topics: the new evangelisation as the process of passing on the faith, the experience of the community of the faithful and the works of charity. In the document all these areas where the faithful are active in the social life are complimentary. Setting some firm boundaries between them is a matter of convention and in some cases proves to be an impossible task. On the one hand, one can realise that the aspect of spreading the Good News directs the efforts of the faithful towards those who are far from the Church. The bond created by the common belief unites the community while helping the needy has got a much wider influence. Moreover, the role one is to play within the Church determines to some extend the profile of the social engagement of a particular faithful. However, the maturity of one’s faith is about combining all three directions of the activity within the society which then enables the genuine coherence of one’s faith and the everyday life.

My aim is to present the museum as an element of the public sphere as well as to present its opportunities and limitations in generating a public debate concerning migration. The problem of migration and multiculturalism is so important in the current social context that, despite its difficult political connotations, it cannot be omitted by museums, especially if we consider museums as an element of a public sphere. The concept of New Museology became a symbol of challenges which contemporary museums are facing. Adopting assumptions of the New Museology in the practice of museums is a visible marker of a public character of museums and it does not let them distance themselves from the politics. Museums are understood as public institutions which can include democratic principles and relations in their actions. In my opinion the museum can assure the space for inclusive forms of citizens’ activity, and the sheer co-participation in cultural practices supports democratic ideas. Museums have plenty of tools supporting the development of a dialogue between cultures, cultural and social integration, creating the atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding of different worldviews. Such actions can be an effective tool in the fight with the exclusion of certain communities from the possibility of taking part in benefits and resources offered by the society – in the cultural, economic, social and political dimensions. In this article I explore how everyday activity of the museum can support the civic culture in six different dimensions: knowledge, values, trust, space, practices and identity.

Analysis of terms ‘social relationship’ and ‘legal relationship’ in the literature of legal theory and legal philosophy encounters many difficulties especially because of the ambiguity of such terms as ‘law’, ‘positive (statutory) law’, ‘rule’, ‘legal rule’, ‘norm’ and ‘legal norm’. Insight into the mentioned above literature points out that particularly the former pair of these notions have been so far wrongly considered as equivalent. It does not result a correct description of the relationship between different normative social systems such as statutory (positive) law, morality, religion and customs. Next it translates into a numbers of disputes about the content of positive law both in law-making’ and law-applying’s decisions.

The text develops further the author’s previous article Theatre of Immediate Intervention in Theoretical Recognition. In presenting the stage performances which follow the previously defined formula, she analyses the means of theatrical expression. Furthermore, she demonstrates how theatre invents the ways to comment on such contemporary social problems as homelessness, the situation of Polish soldiers returning from Iraq, working conditions in large production plants, or the situation of tenants evicted by the new housing estate owners. These stage productions often become theatrical events, engaging public opinion and launching a real intervention into the life of the community. Additionally, the author attempts to situate the “theatre of immediate intervention” in contemporary theatre and in public sphere.

The article demonstrates how the application of discourse theory in order to problematize the definitions of religion and public sphere may bring novel and promising results in the study of religion’s public presence. The article consists of three parts. In the first part, the existing research on the public presence of religion is briefly reviewed, with a particular focus on José Casanova’s theory of de-privatisation and public forms of religion. In the second part, it is discussed how the assumptions underlying Casanova’s theory limit our understanding of and research on public religion. In the third part, it is demonstrated that discourse theory may help to overcome these limitations and may allow for the more adequate diagnosis and interpretation of the role of religion in the public sphere.

This article looks at Alexis de Tocqueville’s reflection on the place of religion in society; strictly speaking the significance of religion in a democratic society. This problem is taken up from two perspectives: from an existential point of view and from a social point of view. In the existential dimension, religion (Christianity) is seen as a natural condition of mankind. In the social dimension, religion is vital to the proper functioning of a society and the preservation of political freedom.
Artykuł poświęcony jest refleksji Alexisa de Tocqueville nad miejscem religii w społeczeństwie, a dokładniej ujmując, nad znaczeniem religii w społeczeństwie demokratycznym.

This paper is devoted to selected aspects of the concept of socio-political life, as emerging from the texts by authors affiliated with the Centre for Political Thought. It addresses some issues related to how these authors understand the State, and also discusses suggested reforms of the State, the limits of liberal democracy, and the relation between the State and civil society. Next, the paper goes on to discuss the views of the Centre for Political Thought  authors on certain participants in public life: political parties and the media. Authors affiliated with the Centre are highlighting the need for strong State institutions that will be capable of pursuing specific policies. They are also stressing how important it is to develop such a governance model that could capture the essence of and define how to organise the Polish political community in such a way as to make it a value in itself for the citizens.

Citizen journalism is frequently perceived as one of the most important developments in the media in early XXI century. However, several important issues have to be discussed in order to describe the nature of this phenomenon. One of these questions refers to the way citizen journalists cover important social and political events and debates – trying to participate in the public debate, and to shape public sphere. The most important question in this respect is: are they mostly neutral observers – or rather engaged activists? On the other hand, independently from the answer regarding mentioned question, we need to assess citizen journalists’ ability to product newsworthy, relevant stories which at the same time meet the standards of “serious” journalism (with its basic rules, as separation of facts and opinion). All these issues are analyzed in this article in context of results of research project “Training or improvisation? Citizen journalist and their journalistic education”, carried out in six European countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Poland). This text concentrates on results from Poland, providing also some comparative data from other five countries. Research methods included: desk study which helped to map the field of citizen journalism and provide the most relevant examples in each country as well as semi-structured interviews with 9 (in each country, 54 in sum) practitioners in the field, representing three different types of citizen journalism.
