Opis:
On the site of ancient Heracleion, today under water of the Bay of Abukir, the team of the Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM) found in 2011 the upper part of a masculine statue in black granite, featuring both pharaonic (overall attitude, head-dress nemes) and Hellenistic (fringe of curls) schemes. Such images of the Egyptian sovereign do not appear before Ptolemaic times and this ‘mixed’ royal iconography was clearly addressed to the mixed Graeco-Egyptian population, that has increased in importance only under Ptolemy IV, and after the battle of Raphia in particular. The wide and fleshy face of the Heracleion sculpture is far from the juvenile long face and narrow chin of Ptolemy VI (see the heads in Athens and Alexandria) and suits at the best the image of corpulent Ptolemy VIII Physkon (‘pot-belly’) – as testified in particular by the head, attributed to this king from Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum, and another granite sculpture from Copenhagen, Ny Carlsberg.

Praca prezentuje domeny systemu PTOLEMY II, a bardziej szczegółowo przedstawiono w niej wybrane możliwości domeny Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) do weryfikacji algorytmów metodą symulacyjną. Pozytywny wynik symulacji decyduje o implementacji symulowanego algorytmu na przykład w systemach wbudowanych. Zaprezentowne rozwiązanie pozwala na szybsze uzyskanie prototypu, a także prowadzi do obniżenia kosztów projektowania.
The paper presents Ptolemy II domain. Selected Synchronous Data Flow domain capabilities applicable to verification of algorithms using simulation methods are presented in detail. Positive simulation result can determine the implementation of the simulated algorithm, for example, in embedded systems. Presented solution allows to speed-up the process of creating the prototype, and leads to lowering development costs.

Ptolemyʾs Geographike Hyphegesis (Introduction to Geography) (ca. AD 150) consists of a huge and invaluable stock of topographical information. More than 6,000 toponyms are even defined by coordinates. Nevertheless, Ptolemyʾs cities are often misplaced or pop up more than once in his maps. This is especially true with his confusing description of Armenia (geogr. 5.13), which caused a modern scholar to call it a ‘parody’ of his work and method. This paper aims at clarifying the basic error in all of Ptolemyʾs coordinates and proposes some explanations and corrections for his Armenian toponyms.

This paper examines the circulation of Ptolemaic silver in the closed monetary zone of Seleucid Coele Syria and Phoenicia. No new silver coinage entered the zone under Antiochus III and Seleucus IV, though hoards were deposited in the Transjordan and eastern Judah in the early years of Antiochus IV. Trade between Phoenicia and Egypt is excluded as an explanatory factor, but the patterns are consistent with Josephus’ account of the dowry of Cleopatra I and Tobiad tax farming. In the 160s BCE fresh Ptolemaic silver began to enter the closed monetary zone, with the earliest finds in Judah, Samaria, and “southern Palestine.” This new influx, like the didrachms “of an uncertain era,” may represent a subsidy from Ptolemy VI to the Maccabees and other dissidents from Seleucid rule.

Opis:
The article is a publication of the decoration fragment coming from an unknown sacral building from Elephantine. The scene preserved in the lower register represents Ptolemy VI Philometor making and offering to Petempamentes, Petensetis and Petensenis. The three gods, known from I.Th.Sy. 303 stele, who have been the subject of scientific discussion for years, appear here all together in one scene – for the first time in the decoration programme of an Egyptian sacral edifice. The iconography of the characters and the accompanying texts suggest a definition of the gods’ personalities as divine warriors and protectors, subject also to a popular cult. The scene considered in the context of the preserved fragments of the upper register seems to imply the association of the building with the royal ideology and possibly the dynastic cult.

Opis:
At the end of the 20th century, as the researchers became more convinced about the existence of the La Tène culture settlement zone in south-eastern Poland, there were more and more attempts at identifying the ethnicity of this population. Some of the researchers allowed for connecting the said settlement with the Anartophracti, known from Claudius Ptolemy’ writings (Geography, III, 5, 8). However, in order to identify the La Tène culture population from south-eastern Poland with Ptolemy’s Anartophracti, it is necessary to prove that Ptolemy’s account concerned the peoples inhabiting the area of the upper San basin in the 3rd and possibly 2nd century B.C. It is thus necessary to prove that the geographical and chronological data are consistent. One more argument in support of the claim would be a proof that the name Anartophracti refers to a Celtic tribe. It would have to be also assumed a priori that the ethnonym of Anartophracti is not a duplicate of the name Anarti. In author’s opinion, Ptolemy’s writings do not allow to prove that the Anartophracti he mentions lived at the areas on the upper San river: they could have rather lived to the east or north-east of the Carpathians. Ptolemy’s account is not clear enough to locate the Anartophractis’ settlements. The above list of the written sources seems to indicate that the chronology of all the information concerning the Anarti ranges between the end of the 1st half of the 1st c. B.C. and the late 240s A.D. There are no premises to link with the Anarti any settlement concentrations from the north-eastern La Tène culture from phase LT C or LT D1.

The aim of the present study is to examine the mechanisms the Diadochoi implemented to gain and maintain control over Cyprus using Pyla-Vigla, a recently discovered fortified garrison, as a case study. Alexander the Great’s successors faced a seemingly insurmountable problem: How does one govern, control, and maintain the largest territorial empire the world had ever seen? Alexander’s imperial strategy was predicated upon maintaining native governing institutions of newly subjugated lands and appointing new leaders. This system could not work for the Diadochoi because without a clear path to succession, a twenty-nine-year period of incessant conflict ensued throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. The surviving successors adopted various strategies to exercise imperial authority over their rivals, which ultimately led to the creation of three ruling Hellenistic dynasties: Ptolemies, Seleucids, and Antigonids. Pyla-Vigla represents one of many such strategies.

Opis:
Ptolemy I, the founder of the Lagid dynasty, heavily invested in the navy and thus established the Ptolemies as a formidable sea power, his work continued by his successor Ptolemy II Philadelphus, who employed his fleet to pressure lesser powers of the Mediterranean. The following article examines the activity of Ptolemy II’s fleet in the Aegean Sea. At the end of the 270s, Ptolemy II sent a naval expedition to the Black Sea; the operation helped him establish a political relationship with Byzantion and demonstrated that maintaining a naval presence on foreign waters could influence other rulers to favor the Ptolemies. The Ptolemaic fleet under Ptolemy II Philadelphus operated in the Aegean during two major international conflicts, the Chremonidean War and the Second Syrian War. In this article I argue that the surviving evidence on the Chremonidean War indicates that Ptolemy II’s aim was not to subdue Greece or even Macedonia but to maintain the Ptolemaic hold over the Aegean with Egypt’s relatively small naval force under Patroclus. In turn, the outcome of the Second Syrian War led to a considerable weakening of the Lagids’ position in the Aegean. Ptolemy II adroitly cultivated international relations through diplomacy, propaganda, international euergetism and spreading his dynastic cult; sending the Ptolemaic fleet to patrol foreign seas constituted one crucial instrument Philadelphus could employ to shift the Mediterranean balance of power in his favor.
