Opis:
Genetic variability of Douglas fir was studied in seven naturally regenerated populations. The genetic structure of the self−sown young generation was described by means of variability of eight enzymes (Dia, G−6−pd, Got, Idh, Pgi, Pgm, Sdh and Shdh) separated electrophoretically on a starch gel. The results indicate that no substantial reduction of the genetic pool and no substantial inbreeding effect were observed in naturally regenerated Polish populations of this introduced species.

The aim of study was to characterize Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) commercial stands and their influence on the forest floor plant communities. Study plots were performed in different regions of the Czech Republic. In total 44 plots were arranged in older Douglas fir stands with well developed forest floor vegetation. For the comparison, the study plots were also established in Norway spruce and broad−leaved tree species (beech, linden, oak) stands. Compared to other studied species, the main effect of Douglas fir on plants was noted in higher share of nitrophilous species.

Opis:
This study concerned 26 forest stands with Douglas fir situated in Lower Silesia, Great Poland, Pomerania, Warmia and Masuria. Each stand was represented by 24 trees. From each tree an increment core was taken by Pressler’s borer. The principal components analysis showed that the first three principal components accounted for 73% of the variation of chronologies in total. The first principal component was the most convergent with the mean air temperature curve for January–March, the second with the total precipitation for June–August, and the third with the mean temperature for June–August. The first principal component always integrated the chronologies and decided on a similar rhythm of changes in the tree-ring widths. The annual variation of tree-ring widths was also affected by precipitation in summer (June–August), but this differentiated the chronologies. This was reflected by the dispersion of chronologies in respect to the eigenvectors of the second principal component. The third principal component also differentiated the chronologies. Separate groups were formed by the most eastern and the most western localities of the territory under investigations. Thus the Douglas fir growth reactions were mainly affected by the thermal and pluvial conditions of summer and, to a lesser, degree by the thermal conditions of winter. On the basis of these results it was possible to distinguish the dendroclimatically homogeneous regions in western and northern Poland.

Opis:
So far, experience in the existing clonal seed orchards of Douglas-fir indicates that grafts of this species are short-lived. According to research carried out in North America, incompatibility between the grafted scions and the rootstocks happens during the whole period of growth and development in clonal seed orchards of Douglas-fir. A similar phenomenon occurs in the clonal seed orchards of Douglas-fir in Poland. The extent of die-back of grafts was examined in three existing oldest units in the Forest District of Gniewkowo (founded in 1992-1993; 2.80 ha), the Forest District of Leżajsk (founded in 1995, 4.22 ha) and the Forest District of Łopuchówko (founded in 1993, 7.43 ha). In all these areas, losses due to die-back ranged from a dozen to a few dozen per cent. Die-backs in the clonal seed orchards in the Forest District of Gniewkowo and in the Forest District of Łopuchówko are now reduced to as much as about fourty per cent of grafts. Analyses of die-back in all these areas reveal great variation between individual clones, indicating its genetic basis. Research carried out so far has not demonstrated the presence of any pathogens responsible for causing the die-back in the grafts. Some hope to solve the problem mentioned above arises from attempts at autovegetative propagation of Douglas-fir.

Opis:
The history of research on tree species of alien origin began in Germany at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when chancellor Bismarck inspired by information about John Booth – who introduced Douglas fir into Europe – became closely interested in that subject matter (North American trees species were characterised by extraordinary productivity). On 15th June 1880, Bernhard Danckelmann – director of the Forest Academy in Eberswalde – was instructed to work out a detailed scheme of the whole system of forest experimental plots. Adam Schwappach was recruited to Eberswalde in 1886 by Bernhard Danckelmann and was to manage the project. Thanks to that, the forest research institute in Eberswalde has today a one of a kind system of permanent experimental plots including 32 species of alien trees originating mainly from North America (26 species), but also from the Caucasus (1), the Balkans (1) and the Japanese archipelago (4). This paper describes the main objects of research on selected alien species (Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata, Chamæcyparis lawsoniana, Chamæcyparis pisifera, Tsuga heterophylla) at the Eberswalde Institute and discusses their most significant results from the point of view of a silviculture-expert. One element of particular importance within this analysis is the comparison of productivity of the researched species in relation to yield tables for Scots pine. Experiments concerning the productivity and usefulness of important tree species of alien origin for different scenarios of climate change (dangerous for the natural environment of Central Europe), have been conducted for over 130 years and the results of those experiments are a further subject of this paper.

The level of damage to the cell membranes is a sign of aging of the seeds and a decrease in their viability. Conductometric seed testing method indirectly utilizes uncontrolled leakage of ions from seeds with damaged cell membranes to assess their viability. This involves the use of an electrical conductivity of the aqueous solution, in which seeds are soaked. The research was conducted in the years 2011−2014 and aimed at developing the methodology of evaluation of Scots pine and Douglas fir seeds by conductivity test. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between electrolyte leakage and germination capacity of Scots pine and Douglas fir seeds. 402 samples of Scots pine seed and 90 specimens of Douglas fir seed from all over Poland were tested. The research material was both freshly harvested and stored. Scots pine seeds were obtained in the years 2008−2014, while Douglas fir – 2003−2013 as well as ones stored in the refrigerator for 15 years. Conductivity test and standard seed germination procedure of the analyzed species were used. For both Scots pine and Douglas fir, we noted that, as the electrolyte leakage rate increased, the germination capacity of the seed decreased. So we decided to test whether the vitality of the seeds was determined by means of a conductivity test. The best−fit regression model was determined and the mean expected germination capacity in the viability classes was calculated. 95% confidence intervals for the regression function were also determined. Evaluation of the viability of the seeds by means of the conductometric method is especially useful for seeds requiring a long stratification period (e.g. Douglas fir to determine the potential loss of their vitality. Although the ISTA seed evaluation rules do not require conductivity test for evaluating the seeds of Scots pine and Douglas fir, it may be applicable in situations where it is necessary to perform a rapid assessment of viability before spring sowing.

In fall 2018 and 2019, we assessed colonization by fungi on Douglas fir trees [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco], white pine (Pinus strobus L.), and red cedar (Thuja plicata D. Don.) on selected experimental plots of the former Prussian Experimental Station, where nonnative tree species were introduced from North America over a century ago. The presence of sporocarps on trunks, root collars, and stumps as well as the litter layer in the soil within a radius of 0.5 m around the trunk of the tree was determined. Additionally, the volume of dead wood on the forest floor of the entire plot was assessed. We recorded numerous fungi on trees and stumps as well as in the litter and soil. For the 31 plots in 12 forest districts, we determined 745 sporocarps of 48 taxa, with 335/19 on the wood of P. menziesii trees and stumps, 377/15 on P. strobus, and 33/6 on T. plicata trees. The highest share of trees with various trunk damage levels was found for T. plicata (70.3%) and the lowest for P. menziesii (6.2%). Among the root parasitic fungi, Heterobasidion sp. and Armillaria sp. were found, especially on the collars and stumps of T. plicata and P. strobus; we did not find basidiomata of both pathogens on P. menziesii. The volume of dead wood within the P. menziesii plots averaged 7.1 m3/ha, whereas in T. plicata plots, it was 56.3 m3/ha. We identified 10 taxa that have not been reported in association with P. strobus for Poland (Cylindrobasidium laeve, Dacrymyces sp., Exidia pithya, E. saccharina, Gymnopilus pnetrans, Leptoporus mollis, Mycena sanguinolenta, Tapinella panuoides, Trametes versicolor, and Xylaria hypoxylon) and three taxa (Exidia pithya, Leptoporus mollis, Serpula himantioides) associated with T. plicata.

There are no original local yield tables for Douglas fir stands grown in Poland. In the presented study we attempted to answer the question whether it is possible to successfully use the German yield tables for Douglas fir developed by Bergel [1985]. Based on the data from these yield tables we developed the height growth model (site index curves) for Douglas fir in the form of the polymorphic equation with variable asymptotes. This model appeared to be, as expected, far better than the anamorphic model. We applied the elaborated equation for calculation of the site index for 63 randomly selected research plots located on the typical Douglas fir habitat types (fresh mixed broadleaved forest and fresh broadleaved forest) in western Poland. We concluded that the mean site index values are significantly higher in younger stands than in the older ones. To determine the reason for this phenomenon, we tested the resulting model using the published data from the permanent research plots. We found out that the pattern of site index changes with age varies for stands in different age classes. Moreover, we noticed, that regardless the age of the stand, in the recent decades there is the increasing height growth rate, which can be attributed to the change in environmental conditions. On the other hand, the analysis of the other characteristics of the sample plots revealed, that there is no significant relationship between site index values and site and plot location, as well as between the productivity level, expressed by the value of the EN coefficient, and age class, site and location of the stand. Bergel yield tables can be used in Polish conditions taking into account the age−dependency of the site index values.

The main objective of the research was to evaluate the incremental response of Douglas fir and Scots pine subjected to strong environmental stress to variable thermal and precipitation conditions. We also attempted to determine periods of tree−ring width reduction caused by strong anthropopressure associated with the activities of nearby industrial plants, which are burdensome for the environment. The studied forest stands are located in the Kędzierzyn Forest District, in Kotlarnia forestry (50°27'59'N, 18°38'42'E) approximately 8 km away from the nitrogen production plants. We used standard methodology applied in the dendrochronological studies with the support of the TSAP−Win, Cofecha, Arstan and Quercus 06.01 softwares. We found that Douglas fir and Scots pine stands growing in the permanently damaged zone due to the adverse effects of industry responded to meteorological conditions in a manner typical of the species. In the study of the relationship between weather and growth, thermal and precipitation conditions were more important in the current year than in the year preceding the increment. A similar distribution of reductions and periods of partial regeneration in both species were also observed. In the same multi−annual period of 1961−1991 deeper reductions of annual increments were observed in Douglas fir (>70%) than in Scots pine (in the range of 50−70%). Conditions, in which trees grew in the Kędzierzyn Forest District, contributed to the decrease in annual increments of both Douglas fir and Scots pine, while the previous species turned out to be a more sensitive one, which had been indicated by other researchers ealier.
