Opis:
The cultural traditions of Gdańsk have been developing since Reformation times. Among the very important features of this city have always been multilingualism, multiculturalism and multiconfessionalism. One of the most important religions in Gdańsk was Protestantism. Since the Reformation times till the end of the Second World War, Protestant traditions influenced the culture of the city and most of all its music life. The development of the music culture in Gdańsk is well-documented in the article. Among the most important sources of Protestant pieces of music from the 16th till 18th century quoted by the author, there are Gdańsk Tablature (Tabulatura Gdańska), Organ tablature from The Cathedral in Gdańsk Oliva (Oliwskiej Tabulaturze Organowej), and Musicalia Gedanenses, which can be found in Staatsbibliothek in Berlin Preußischer Kulturbesitz. recently published by D. Szlagowska, B. Długońska, D. Popinigis, J. Woźniak in Music Collections from Gdańsk (Vol. 1-3, 2007-2011).

Opis:
The protestants have condemned the use of images for worship purposes. But, can a literary image evoke the same feeling of reprehension? In this article, the author tries to find the answer to that very question, focusing his research on protestant martyrology (1554-1619) written by Jean Crespin and further developed by Simon Goulart. While it certainly was Crespin’s wish to compose his collection of authentic documents, allowing the victims to speak for themselves in order to defend their faith, as the time went by, he became more and more sensitive to all the charms of so called vive représentation which, in 16th century, can mean both ekphrasis and hypotyposis. The analysis of several examples has proven that, indeed, Crespin tends to amplify the scene of torture so that it becomes an ekphrastic image, capable not only of persuading, but also of influencing readers’ emotions. Then, as the era of pyres comes to an end only to be followed by that of civil wars, Goulart’s way of showing the protestants massacres relies on what’s typical for hypotyposis: a dynamic narrative that stays relatively asyndetic and lacks auctorial interventions.

Opis:
The article presents the influence of Protestantism on education. The main thesis of the article is that the Protestant system of education, which emphasizes not only the religious aspect but also the element of understanding in the process of learning, was the most important factor in the development of modern education. The Reformation enabled some new pedagogical ideas and concepts to develop freely. Thanks to Luther`s dual concept of “Christperson” (the man for Christ) and “Weltperson” (the man for the world) the Protestant education started to perceive the double role of education - for the church and for the society. The most important conclusion that is drawn here is that the Protestant pedagogy with the emphasis on understanding is the alternative model to the modern technological concepts of standardisation and measurability of this discipline of science.

Marcin Siennik (ca. 1540 – ca. 1580) is mostly known for elaborating Herbarz [“Herbary”] (a popular medical encyclopaedia) and translating the famous Secrets of the Reverend Maister Alexis of Piedmont into Polish. Most historians (Kośmiński, Estreicher, Karpluk, etc.) are certain of Siennik’s German descent, pointing to the fact that the page of Herbarz containing the index of German names was signed by him with his original name: Merten Heüwrecher, which was then translated into Polish as Marcin Siennik. There are also other arguments in support of this thesis (which is what constitutes the contribution mentioned in the title of the paper), for example the way in which he translated the title of Alexis of Piedmont’s book (not secrets, as it is called in the original Italian version and the Latin base for the translation, but mysteries, which points to the influence of the German tradition), a number of words appearing in the text (e.g. Italian potione [beverage] is rendered in Siennik’s version as trunek [drink], which proves similar to the German etymon Trunk or Trank), as well as phrases such as “And having put it into hot ashes for four miserere...” (in Siennik’s translation: “put it into ashes and then take it out...”), which serve as a manifestation of his reluctance to follow the Catholic custom of counting time with the Word of God.In this context, the least valuable is the opinion of Śleszkowski, the “author” of the second edition of the Polish version of The Secrets of the Reverend Maister Alexis of Piedmont, who wrote the following in the preface: “First and foremost I did not confide in the translation by Marcin Siennik when it came to the Polish language, as he is so inept in it that I have never read anything written in Polish quite so ineptly, which shows that he was either a foreigner or brought up in foreign lands in his youth...” – he focused not so much on Siennik’s descent (on which he may have had some information), but primarily on pursuing his own ambition, appropriating the authorship of the Polish translation of The Secrets in order for his “translation,” copied almost verbatim from Siennik’s version, to be considered better and definitive. He was also motivated by “patriotic” premises, which for him meant xenophobia, extreme anti-Semitism, and other products of the Counter-Reformation crusade.
Artykuł prezentuje też poglądy i poczynania Sebastiana Śleszkowskiego, wydawcy drugiego wydania polskiego tłumaczenia Sekretów (Kraków, 1620).The aim of the article is to supplement the knowledge of the German origin of Marcin Siennik by, among many other things, the information concerning his Protestant denomination, which influenced the way in which some fragments of the originally Italian The Secrects of the Reverend Maister Alexis of Piemont (Venice, 1555) were translated into Polish, and at the same time to present the views and doings of Sebastian Śleszkowski, the publisher of the second edition of the Polish translation of The Secrets (Kraków, 1620).

Protestant theology states that “Christian annunciation is essentially the message of peace, and theology, as an interpreter of Revelation, it must be peaceful in nature”. Nowadays peacekeeping doctrine in Polish Protestant theology was represented by Witold Benedyktowicz. The basis of the Christian irenology are the following statements: 1) war is a sin, 2) peace is a positive value, 3) peace for Christians is Christ; 4) peace among people is the result of the reconciliation of mankind with God, 5) peace is the normal state of things; 6) Christian peace service is a result of responsibility and represents penance, 7) commitment to the service of peace is a matter of a decision of faith; 8) the Church is the forerunner and promoter of peace; 9) there is no peace without unity of the mankind. Irenology the branch of theology can be seen as part of ecumenical theology and in Poland also as a kind of political theology.

Opis:
The problem of global exile belongs to the most discussed challenge of the recent generation. There were more than 46 mln people in the world in status of migrant in the year 2014. The article is an attempt to find a biblical perspective and answers for one of the vital geopolitical issue of the present-day civilization. There are some topos-persons in the books of the Old Testament who could be de-scribed as migrants and pilgrims. The most important of them are Moses and King David as well as prophets Elijah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. In the New Testament, the most famous image of exile could be found in the story of Jesus’ Childhood. The postmodern human being is often described as homo viatorum, but the real need of millions of people is to find their own home, the place on the earth when they can feel safe. The biblical impulse for the recent ethical debate is based on the Semitic prescription of hospitality. To be in solidarity with migrants is an ethical claim for European citizens.

Subject and purpose of work: This article examines the role of religion in economic development. Even though it is obvious that religion plays a vital role in economic development since a healthy economy requires that all people view one another with dignity, there are still some questions which need to be answered, for example, why wealthier nations tend to be less religious, and if economic development actually causes individuals to become less religious in today’s world. Materials and methods: The research is based on universal methods of formal logic and scientific abstraction, basics of innovation science, investment science and institutional economics, systemic, structural-functional and synergetic approaches, as well as information sources of the World Economic Forum. Results: The authors’ hypothesis about the influence of religion and religious values on rapid economic growth has been substantiated. Conclusions: In conclusion, it can be stated that there is strong negative correlation between GDP per capita and the importance of religion in a particular country, nevertheless, in most societies religious values were the main driving force of economic growth.

The notion of meritocracy is among the keywords used in order to describe the contemporary world. It has become more and more an inherent concept of an order whose main factors are said to be globalization as well as the impact of free market philosophy on society and culture. The concept of meritocracy considers the nature of elites. On the one hand, meritocratic elites are taken from groups selected for their merits and competences, but on the other hand they avoid their responsibility towards society and culture. Amongst many counterproposals it seems worthwhile to present the evangelical concept of elites which is deeply embedded in evangelical social teaching. Evangelical theology introduces in its social discourse the notion of the responsibility elites. According to evangelical theologians, the key task to overcome the growing social, economic and cultural crisis of today may be found in the rehabilitation of the notion of common good. Interpreted from a sociological as well as theological standpoint, responsibility elites play an important role when spreading the concept of the common good. The article presents theological guidelines of evangelical teaching on elites as well as evangelical proposals concerning the issue collating them with the broad diagnosis of the meritocratic elites.

The article investigates the canonical plays of William Shakespeare - Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest - in an attempt to determine the nature of Shakespeare’s position on the early modern tendency to demonize fairy belief and to view fairies as merely a form of demonic manifestation. Fairy belief left its mark on all four plays, to a greater or lesser extent, and intertwined with the religious concerns of the period, it provides an important perspective on the problem of religion in Shakespeare’s works. The article will attempt to establish whether Shakespeare subscribed to the tendency of viewing fairies as demonic agents, as epitomized by the Daemonologie of King James, or opposed it. Special emphasis will also be put on the conflation of fairies and Catholicism that one finds best exemplified in Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan. The article draws on a wealth of recent scholarship on early modern fairies, bringing together historical reflection on the changing perception of the fairy figure, research into Shakespeare’s attitude towards Catholicism and analyses of the many facets of anti-Catholic polemic emerging from early modern Protestant discourse.

Opis:
Lexemes Evangelic and Protestant appeared in the Polish language in the middle of the 16th century. The name Evangelic was first used by Stanislaw Orzechowski in the work Rozmowa około egzekucyjej of 1563. The name Protestant was created in connection with the protest of Martin Luther’s followers at the Diet of Speyer and its only 16th century attestation comes from Marcin Kromer’s work Mnicha z dworzaninem rozmowa trzecia of 1553. This lexeme also functioned in the meaning not related to religious issues but resulting from the Latin basis. A general name applied in the 16th c. in relation to the Reformation’s followers was the lexeme Evangelic used, among others, by Bielski, Wujek or Skarga. At that time, apart from Evangelic, names reflecting internal diversity of the movement were in use such as, among others, luteran, luteryjan, luter, kalwinista, kalwinita, kalwin or auszpurczanin as well as general names such as konfessyjonista. In subsequent centuries the lexeme Protestant popularized in the first non-religious meaning as a synonym of an opponent. Dictionary resource material from the 17th and 18th centuries concerning the above mentioned lexemes does not allow to claim whether they became synonyms already in the Middle Polish period. The process of semantic identification of the lexemes finished in the Modern Polish period, which is confirmed by both the Polish language dictionaries and the most recent Polish language included in the National Corpus of Polish. It appears that such identification is a result of expiration of the first sub-meaning of the lexeme Protestant as well as an effect of the manner of defining this lexeme involving separation of a religious meaning from specified historical events. When the lexemes appeared in the 16th century, the lexeme Evangelic prevailed whereas currently the lexeme Protestant is more popular.
