Opis:
The IMO has adopted Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) in order to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping. And, the shipping industry is required to develop and improve the energy saving ship operation technologies to meet the above IMO guideline. The weather routing is one of the energy saving navigation technologies and widely adopted by oceangoing merchant ships. The effectiveness of the weather routing mainly depends on the accuracy of weather forecast data and the ship’s propulsion performance prediction. The propulsion performance in the actual sea is usually predicted using the Self Propulsion Factors obtained by model tests. It is necessary to understand the propulsion performance characteristics in the actual sea conditions for the improvement of propulsion performance prediction. From the above points of view, the authors performed full‐scale experiments using a training ship in order to investigate the propulsion performance characteristics in the actual sea. This paper describes the analysis results on the characteristics of Power Curves and Self Propulsion Factors under various weather and sea conditions.

Opis:
The wake equalizing duct (WED) is one of the most commonly used energy saving devices for improving the propulsion performance of a ship; and reducing the propeller-excited vibrations and viscous resistance forces. During the last three decades considerable research and development activities have taken into place within this context. Most of these devices are used to improve propulsive efficiency, but some of them aims to improve other performance characteristics, such as cavitations, vibration, noise, maneuverability, etc. Marine propellers are the most common propulsion systems; nevertheless, it is possible to improve its propulsive performance using additional auxiliary propulsor devices (unconventional propulsors). Two versions of an existing ship in normal version and fitted with WED device were analyzed in order to demonstrate the influence on the WED device on the propeller cavitations . It was determined that the values for the pressure coefficient is 1.98 for without WED situation and 2.029 for WED situation. The difference is not so significant that, the conclusion is that WED device did not have influence over the cavitations of the propeller. Either optimization of dimension and form of WED did not help in reducing negative effects of cavitations. Not being a study in this paperwork, to decrease the cavitations we have other choices including a sound design of the propeller biased to improve the propeller behavior in cavitations. WED is clearly not a choice.

Opis:
Basing on the evolution of application of different kinds of fuel supplying main engines of gas carriers, this article justifies the need to compare the qualities of these engines. Mass-size, energy and energy-ecological effectiveness indicators have been defined. Properties of self-ignition engines run on one or two kinds of fuel have been considered. Values of key performance indicators have been estimated. On the basis of the identified sets of indicators, comparative analysis of a dual fuel engine with single fuel ones has been carried out.
Posługując się ewolucją zastosowania różnych rodzajów paliw zasilających silniki główne gazowców, w artykule uzasadniono potrzebę konfrontacji cech tych silników. Zdefiniowano wskaźniki efektywności masowo-gabarytowe, energetyczne i energetyczno-ekologiczne. Rozpatrzono cechy silników o zapłonie samoczynnym zasilanych jednym i dwoma rodzajami paliw. Oszacowano wartości kluczowych wskaźników efektywności. W oparciu o zidentyfikowane zbiory wskaźników przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą cech silnika dwupaliwowego z jednopaliwowymi.

Opis:
Numerical model for selected turboshaft engine is highly required by helicopter and aircraft designers. Presented paper includes key features for turboshaft numeric model builders. The study of the real performance and estimated results showed that presented method is exact for higher throttle levels. Presented method will be useful for preliminary design when is no need to acquire real test data. Numerical model was build for steady state operations, because maintenance manual for selected engine includes tests records only at its state. In that case helicopter turboshaft manuals are very similar, steady state was used widely for testing in TB3 and T700 family engines. Steady state reduced effect of rotor head positions which was influencing total engine performance. TB3-117 helicopter turboshaft engine, engine cutaway sections, first step - expansion ratios, second step - on the ground calculations for different throttle position, engine inlet mass flow ratio as a function of maximum allowable EGT, and throttle position, third step - on the ground calculations for different throttle position, second step - on the ground calculations for different throttle position, performance charts for RR-250 BJ turboshaft, and for TB3-117 M/MT - Mi-14/17, TB3-117 III-series Mi-24 are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Analyzing the systems in terms of reliability, we often treat them as the technical objects only, omitting human interaction or assuming that operator has constant characteristics. This significantly distorts the results obtained in this way, since human is a part of the system with special properties that can change together with the predisposition of the operator and the conditions under which he operates. These attributes may have a major influence on the reliability of the systems. Therefore, analysis of systems reliability should include a reliability of operator and its properties. In this paper presented the antropotechnical reliability structure based on selected installation, which is a part of ships propulsion system. Also operator’s functions were defined and the analysis of human reliability, taking into account various properties of the operator and the external conditions, were performed. Then, there is assessed the influence of operator and environmental factors on the value of the entire system reliability. The study used the reliability data of the container ship propulsion system equipped with low-speed piston engine, fixed pitch propeller and auxiliary installations. These data were obtained from studies of expert judgments (Brandowski A., Frąckowiak W. et al.) in the years 2007–2009. For HRA (human reliability analysis), HEART technique (Human Error Assessment and Reduction Technique) was used, together with the human unreliability values and correction factors developed by the authors of this method. Study results illustrate influence of environmental, ergonomic factors and the properties of the operator on the reliability of the antropotechnical systems. The studies were subjected exemplification on fuel treatment installation as a part of ships propulsion systems.

Opis:
Efficiency is crucial for an airplane to reduce both costs of operations and emissions of pollutants. There are several airplane concepts that potentially allow for increasing the efficiency. A few of them were not investigated thoroughly enough yet. The inverted joined wing configuration, where the upper wing is positioned in the front of the lower one is an example of such a concept. Therefore, a project consisting of an aerodynamic analysis and optimisation, development of the software for multidisciplinary optimisation, development of an electric propulsion system, development of an experimental scaled demonstrator, wind tunnel testing and flight-testing was undertaken by consortium led by the Institute of Aviation, including also Warsaw University of Technology, Air Force Institute of Technology and small company MSP. Results of this project led to the conclusion that inverted joined wing configuration allows to build an airplane with the best performance in the world, but its advantage against conventional airplanes is marginal. One reason for this is large trimming drag of the configuration with relatively high position of the thrust vector. Therefore, other configurations of the propulsion were also considered to see if airplane performance could be further improved. This effort is described in the present paper.
