Opis:
Production development has for decades concentrated on incremental improvements by exploiting existing manufacturing knowledge to improve existing production systems or adapt them for new product developments. Building up an "ambidextrous innovation" ability, and more specifically in increasing focus on explorative production innovation, is important to balance production development efforts and obtain sustainable development of production. This paper aims to provide a conceptual framework for “ambidextrous production innovation” that conceptualizes and highlights phenomenon characteristics from exploitative and explorative perspectives. The conceptual framework describes “production innovation” as the process of either increasing or developing a new production capability, enabling opportunities for new product designs. This process can be either “product-driven” or “production-driven” depending on the primary objective of the development.

Opis:
Goal – Identification of actions which make up innovative processes in confectionery enterprises. Research methodology – The entities selected for the study fulfill two criteria: they are Polish enterprises operating in the confectionery industry (entities with dominant equity, with headquarters in Poland) and have market shares of at least 5% (measured by the value of sales revenues in 2017 at the minimum level of PLN 100 million). All the companies which met the above criteria were identified; then ten enterprises were chosen from that group. The research was carried out with the help of a survey questionnaire. Score – Innovative processes usually begin with research on consumer needs, which indicates the use of a demand innovation model. Furthermore, the more actions an innovative process comprises, the less willingly it is used by enterprises. Originality/Value – The paper has a cognitive value of the innovation process models used by confectionery enterprises. The author proposes a modification to the current model.

Opis:
The visual management technique used in process improvement, i.e. value stream mapping (VSM) has been presented in the paper. Value stream mapping is one of the basic management tools in the context of Lean Management or Lean Production. It allows to visualize the flow of decision, information, material and their connections in the full production cycle (from the order, through planning, production, to shipping to the customer). VSM is a lean tool that gives the ability to create flows in the process before implementing changes. In this paper, the possibilities of changes planning based on the current and future status maps have been discussed. On the basis of the current state map (CSM), the areas requiring improvement and operations which efficiency is decisive and for the process have been designated. Particular attention has been paid to the possibilities of using VSM in unit production processes. In the paper has been proposed the two possibilities for company development in terms of the improvement technique in line with the Kaizen philosophy as well as the implementation of process innovations. Which means balanced development through the improvement of the existing process or an acute development strategy through the implementation of process innovations (which involves significant costs).

The stable transportation of pulverized coal in the vertical pipe is significant for the operation of the gasifier. There are few studies on the flow characteristics and flow pattern transition of particles in vertical pipes with small diameters. This paper has modeled and analyzed the flow characteristic of powder in dense-phase pneumatic conveying through 25 mm vertical pipe using CFD. Firstly, the grid independence is verified to determine the optimal mesh size. Then, the influences of different solid loading ratios (SLRs) and conveying velocities on particle flow characteristics, flow stability, and flow pattern transition are investigated. The results show that the flow pattern in the vertical pipe changes from annular flow to uniform flow at high SLR and low conveying velocity. Moreover, the evolution regulation of resistance characteristics under different conveying velocities is further revealed. Considering the conveying stability and economic benefit, the most suitable conveying velocity is 6 m/s

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the creation of university's potential for knowledge transfer to the business environment. The analysis will be presented in the system inspired by the model proposed by Tidd, Bessant and Pavitt [2005] which is as follows: (i) generating knowledge (ii) searching for and identifying knowledge, (iii) evaluating and selecting ides, (iv) implementing in practice. Each stage creates different challenges for the university's operations (also the final stage, which is not generally carried out by the university), which will be included in the analysis. The results of the theoretical analysis are referred to the results of the research concerning knowledge transfer practices among universities in Lodz. A total of thirty-five cases of knowledge transfer practices were included in the analysis. The analysis conducted in 2010 and 2011 covered types of practices, the initiative of carrying out practices, their duration, the nature of practices, their subject scope and impact as well as risks and benefits associated with implementing knowledge transfer practices. The preliminary exploration, interviews and innovation studies conducted indicate that the analysis covered a vast majority of such practices, which means that it is representative of the Lodz region.

Opis:
The innovation models develop over time, due to market and industry needs. As the main “product” of knowledge economy, innovations (as a concept) are symbolic goods, founded in symbols, not in atoms. This notion causes some consequences typical for information goods, like ease of replication or exchange, zero-marginal replication costs and cheap storage. On the other hand, there is a growing innovation production cost and uncertainty and risk of innovation activity that discourage companies from being innovative. Open innovation model shows the knowledge flows in the “inner” and “outer” sphere of the innovation process. The knowledge has been showed in some aspects: as private good, public good and also as “the commons”. The transition spheres have been showed too. Opening the innovation process is addressed to the costly and risky projects that cause risk aversion amongst entrepreneurs, but without which useful products might have never been produced. The goal of the article is to show the knowledge flow and knowledge transition between innovation actors, its “common” nature and the trial to show the value added in the open innovation process. Methods used are literature and data analysis as well as case study.

Opis:
Purpose: The study aimed to identify differences in the level of innovation of the two types of firms – family (FB) and non-family (NFB) – and understand how the expectations of the management and/or business owners vary regarding the impact of innovations on business performance. Design/methodology/approach: Research questions were formulated based on the review of the findings of the surveys that compared innovation in family and non-family firms worldwide. Then, empirical research was conducted in 334 family and non-family firms in Poland. Findings: The findings do not confirm significant differences in the level of product innovation between FB and NFB. On the other hand, they point to a higher level of innovation measured with the number of process innovations in NFB. Research shows that firms rate the degree to which the expectations of innovation effects were fulfilled relatively low in both types of firms. Research limitations/implications: The applied measurement of the level of innovation according to the number of implemented innovations does not take into account their qualitative aspect, whether they are radical or incremental. The survey (questionnaire and interview) was based solely on the number of innovations declared as implemented by the respondents. Practical implications: The survey findings should inspire managers of family and non-family firms to analyze both the expected effects of the implementation of a particular type of innovation and to assess its actual outcomes. Social implications: Studies show that FB are not less innovative when it comes to implementing new or modified products and services. This contradicts both the opinions and some research results about the conservatism of FB or their stronger orientation towards family goals at the expense of a firm’s growth. Originality/value: This comparative study on FB and NFB innovation fills a gap in the area where knowledge concerning this issue is still scarce in Poland.

Purpose – Most of the subject literature provides information on the skills and competencies required to join teams and work in the innovation process. So far, there has been a research gap concerning the issue in question. The results of researching the issue can, however, be used to ensure more effective innovation development through a better-than-ever selection of individuals for each phase of the innovation process. The subject of research was to examine, identify and describe differences in the participation of men and women in the innovation process, taking into account not only competencies but also personal characteristics, attitudes and behaviour. Research method – The research covered 1,164 innovative companies – beneficiaries of the European Union Cohesion Policy 2007-2013. The conceptual framework of the model described by the pre-25 variables has been verified. Applying the selected statistically significant variables and components ensures more accuracy for the model developed in the present study. Both the conceptual research context and preliminary analysis fulfil the assumptions for using principal component analysis and the Promax rotation method. Results – The results prompt a new way of creating more effective teams in the process of innovation, with managers considering not only competencies but also attitudes, behaviours and gender-related issues. Originality /value – The obtained results can be used to ensure more effective innovation development through a better-than-ever selection of individuals in each phase of the innovation process.
