The structure of identity forms the main point of discussion in this essay. The initial question “Who I am?” is divided into fragmentary questions: “Who I became?” and “Who I’m going to be?”, which are later contrasted with similar questions: “Who we are?” and “Who we all are?”. The analysis of relations between these questions and their sensible answers, reveals a factor of prescriptive, which is explained by appealing to some particular understanding of the word “good” manifesting in such feelings like pride, shame and sense of guilt. It leads to fragmentary definition: our identity consists of everything we are proud or ashamed of. There are some limitations of our freedom in ruling of identity in that meaning, however, and they are described further in this essay.

Instytucja rodzin zastępczych istnieje od dawna, jednak dopiero ostatnie dwie dekady są przykładem świadomego doboru kandydatów na opiekunów, a ustawowy obowiązek odbycia przez nich szkolenia wprowadzono w Polsce w 2001 r. W artykule scharakteryzowano program PRIDE – rodzinna opieka zastępcza/adopcja w kontekście jego przydatności w rozwiązywaniu najbardziej charakterystycznych problemów, z którymi borykają się rodziny zastępcze. Program PRIDE jest uznany, doceniany i wykorzystywany w wielu krajach do przygotowania osób ubiegających się o pełnienie funkcji opiekunów zastępczych.
Foster families have existed for a long time. The last twenty years is an example of a conscious choice of candidates for carers. The statutory duty to do their training was introduced in Poland in 2001. The article characterizes the PRIDE program – family foster care/adoption in the context of its usefulness in solving the most characteristic problems. The Pride is recognized, appreciated and used in many countries to prepare applicants for acting as foster carers.

The paper discusses populist appeals to emotions in political communication, considering their role in the proliferation of political polarisation and radicalisation. Revisiting the Emotional Rescue Model of anger, enthusiasm, and fear, we considered pride and compassion low-arousal alternatives to populist storytelling. In the experiments, we tested how participants (n=364) respond to appeals to pride and compassion in their brain activity, emotional expressions, prosocial behaviour, attitude change, and memorisation. In the paper, we primarily discussed the results of the fMRI (neuroimaging) study and compared them with the previous studies on authentic pride, compassion, empathy, and reappraisal. Considering similarities in the activation of the superior and middle temporal gyri, temporal pole, inferior frontal gyrus, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, we argue that compassionate political narratives should be the most effective low-arousal alternative to populist storytelling. Moreover, stimulation of the reappraisal-related network in that group suggests that participants reframed emotional negativity into prosocial acts of caring and helping, also re-evaluating their attitudes.

Abstract: The paper discusses appeals to pride and compassion as emotional strategies for mobilization in political communication, developing the Emotional Rescue Model of enthusiasm, anger, and fear. Exploring general results of brain activity, facial expressions, cognitive responses, attitude change, and prosocial behavior, it examines how compelling pride-related and compassion-related narratives are. Moreover, it considers the possibilities of targeting emotional content to specific audiences, verifying how results correspond with participants’ empathy, political preferences, and attitudes toward collective remembrance. The paper explores age, gender, and election attendance as other possible factors correlated with the outcomes of manipulation. In conclusion, it suggested that appeals to pride should target supporters of the cause, but compassionate narratives can address non-supporters and undecided recipients.

In most individualistic cultures, pride is regarded as a positive emotion that follows a positive evaluation of one’s competence or effort when achieving a goal. Fredrickson (2001) suggests that pride may expand individuals’ scope of attention and broaden their action repertoires by driving them toward greater achievements in the future. In the present study, we show that proud individuals may search for greater achievements by stronger willingness to cooperate with agentic though immoral individuals. We demonstrate that proud participants in comparison to participants in the control condition rely to a higher degree on information on agency and respect, and less on information on morality and liking of their potential partners of cooperation.

The aim of this article is to elaborate on the reasons behind feeling the emotion of pride within the professional context of actions undertaken by contemporary Polish teachers. The article attempts to answer the question of what role pride plays in teachers’ career building process and their daily work. All considerations focus on the social construction of the meaning of pride, established from teachers’ perspectives. Pride is here referred to as social emotion, in line with an interpretivist approach. The following reflections are based on the data collected due to: 1) multiple observations conducted by the author in the years 2008-2016 in the primary, as well as junior high schools; 2) interviews with teachers, parents, and other school staff. Pride in teachers’ work arises in three main contexts: 1) pride due to prestige, 2) pride due to one’s recognition (appreciation), and 3) pride as a result of diverse interactions, for example, teacher-student. The emotion at hand is, like shame, of a social origin and plays a key role when it comes to interactions, social control, as well as maintaining social order. And yet, most of the researchers would give the lead to emotions such as shame, guilt, or related stigma. Based on the collected data, this article focuses on the emotion of pride in the process of identity building by employees—teachers.

Drawing on the recent research ‘Dominant and demotic school culture: analysis of tensions fields’ this paper analyses found artifacts in 6 different Lithuanian secondary schools. The visual data was collected by making images of places and artifacts which were mentioned during the walks in the school territory with one teacher and one pupil afterwards. The analysis of images focuses particularly on two aspects: a) which artifacts are significant for teachers and pupils in the schools? b)  What do these artifacts mean for teachers and pupils? Therefore, the analysis is based on comparing walks among teachers and pupils in all schools. The analysis shows obvious differences on re/presented artifacts among teachers and pupils. The teachers emphasized and showed those artifacts which on one way or another represent their schools’ achievements, like pupils’ sport achievements, pupils’ artworks, and honored pupils’ displays, and were related with aspects of pride. The paper argues the possible reasons for the importance of pride in schools. Meanwhile, pupils were highlighting spaces they like to gather around during non-learning time. Pupils appreciate less visible places because it is possible to have some privacy there. As analysis shows, different sitting artifacts (chairs, sofas, beanbags) play an important role for creating such private pupils’ ‘oases’. On the other hand, such artifacts, as pupils’ artworks, information displays, and sport achievements, seem to be meaningful for pupils if they were contributing in the creation process or were mentioned in these artifacts.

The article argues that anyone who sins with any of the attitudes denoted by the verb hypsoō w will not evade adequate punishment. When an individual commits this sin the punishment is loss of the ability to rule, illness or even death. If nations succumb to pride their fate is destruction as punishment for impenitence and disobedience to God. Punishment is inflicted on heathen rulers and nations as well as on the kings and the chosen people. Then God is the ultimate punishing instance and the foundation of justice. In turn the attitude of those who bravely oppose the pride of the rulers and whole communities encourages others to persevere in the conduct that pleases God.

The aim of the article is to show how pride arises in teachers’ work and students’ learning process. Therefore, school and the education process will be shown through the prism of emergence of one social emotion: pride. In contrast, in some cases, pride is juxtaposed with another social emotion—shame. The emphasis will be placed on pride as the emotion which refers to the diagnosis of social bond and leads to experiencing other emotions such as joy, happiness, satisfaction, etc. It is assumed that frequent experiencing of pride leads to increased self-esteem. I will refer to the concept of Theodore D. Kemper, i.e. a theoretical frame which assumes that emotions arise on the basis of social relations and pride is a result of satisfaction emerging due to the growth of our status. I will moreover invoke the theory of Thomas Scheff, who indicates e.g. that pride as an emotion customizes our behaviors without supervision and control. From a sociological perspective and under an interpretative approach, pride will be treated as a social emotion. The article sums up reflections based on qualitative research conducted by the author in the years 2006-2014.

The 25th anniversary of the recovery of political sovereignty by Poland as a result of the collapse of communism in Europe passed in 2014. On this occasion, a whole series of studies, analyses, research was carried out which was aimed at seeking answers to the question of how the Polish public evaluates the passing of a quarter-century. The presented text is the result of research which is a part of this anniversary trend, the modern understanding of patriotism in general as well as regional patriotism. The research was conducted by the author in the autumn of 2013. The empirical material was collected through the Internet, which strongly placed the issue of representativeness of the results, however, due to the number of statements it can be the basis to formulate general conclusions about what is contemporary patriotism for the Poles. General conclusions are that patriotism also became practical, that is, the Poles are patriots when this is useful. Yet what other conclusion can be drawn is that the majority of respondents is a component of regional pride of patriotism in general. The exception is Upper Silesia, where local patriotism is next to national patriotism and the opposition it is often the latter. Yet another conclusion to be drawn in the light of the results obtained is that patriotism is changing its face in the martyrdom of patriotism actions and their effects according to the “principle of the deeds you shall know them.”
W 2014 r. minęła 25. rocznica odzyskania suwerenności politycznej przez Polskę w wyniku upadku komunizmu w Europie. Przy tej okazji prowadzono cały szereg badań, analiz, których celem badawczym było poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na pytanie jak społeczeństwo polskie ocenia mijające ćwierćwiecze. Prezentowany tekst, jest efektem badań, które wpisują się w ten rocznicowy nurt, nad współczesnym rozumieniem patriotyzmu w ogóle, jak i patriotyzmu regionalnego. Badania były prowadzone przez autora jesienią 2013 roku. Materiał empiryczny zebrano za pośrednictwem Internetu, co mocno postawiło problem reprezentatywności uzyskanych rezultatów, jednak z uwagi na liczbę wypowiedzi może być podstawą do sformułowania ogólnych wniosków na temat tego czym jest współczesny patriotyzm dla Polaków. Generalne wnioski są takie, że patriotyzm również się zutylitaryzował, to znaczy Polacy są patriotami wówczas, gdy jest to użyteczne. Jeszcze inny wniosek, jaki można sformułować jest taki, że dla większości badanych patriotyzm regionalny jest komponentem patriotyzmu w ogóle. Wyjątkiem jest Górny Śląsk, gdzie patriotyzm lokalny występuje obok patriotyzmu narodowego, a często i w opozycji go tego drugiego. Jeszcze inny wniosek, jaki nasuwa się w świetle uzyskanych wyników badań jest taki, że patriotyzm zmienia swoje oblicze z martyrologicznego w patriotyzm działań i ich efektów wg zasady „po czynach ich poznacie”.

The studies were aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of a Polish version of the Body and Appearance Self-Conscious Emotions Scale (BASES; Castonguay, Sabiston, Crocker, & Mack). In Study 1, data from student (n = 325) and community samples (n = 385) provided evidence for the four-factor structure of the Polish BASES and its adequate construct validity. Data from a separate sample (n = 443) in Study 2 supported the four-factor structure of the Polish BASES, as well as its convergent validity through significant correlations between BASES scores and other variables related to body image and well-being. Sex invariance was also tested and confirmed, although mean scores for guilt and shame were higher for women. The Polish BASES is an appropriate and psychometrically sound measure of body and appearance-related self-conscious emotions.

What is Rachilde’s vocation? Could her life have taken another course rather than the literary way? According to what she declares in her autobiographical or semi-autobiographical texts, it turns out that this profession, chosen consciously in her early years, had saved her from madness. Drawing inspiration from the psychoanalytical observations contained in Catherine Millot’s book La Vocation de l’écrivain, the present study attempts to establish the sources of the literary career chosen by Rachilde, her own ways of exercising it and the point of achievement that she could reach by accomplishing certain choices. For Rachilde, there is no enjoyment outside of writing.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie dynamiki odpowiedzialności człowieka działającego. Przedstawiona analiza bierze za punkt odniesienia uwagi zarówno filozoficzno-teologiczne Johna Henry’ego Newmana, jak i świat literacki pisarza Grahama Greene’a. Zarówno Newman, jak i Greene stają w obronie odpowiedzialności i wolności człowieka. Te dwa obszary są zagrożone, bo działanie zawsze dokonuje się w jakichś okolicznościach, stąd pojawia się próba ucieczki od odpowiedzialności i wolności poprzez wskazanie na okoliczności. Tak postępują jednostki poddające się nieautentycznej egzystencji. Różne doświadczenia i stany emocjonalne mogą zwieść człowieka w jego ocenie własnego postępowania: litość, pycha, lenistwo. Ostateczną tezą tekstu jest twierdzenie, iż odpowiedzialność w swym najgłębszym znaczeniu nie jest odpowiedzią na zastaną sytuację, ale próbą przywrócenia ładu rzeczywistości.
This paper seeks to depict the dynamic nature of the acting person. The point of reference for my analysis is John Henry Newman’s philosophical and theological remarks and Graham Greene’s literary world. Both Newman and Greene defend man’s responsibility and freedom. These areas are threatened because actions are always committed under certain circumstances, therefore there is a temptation to flee from responsibility and freedom by blaming the circumstances. This kind of conduct is typical of inauthentic individuals. There are different experiences and emotional moods that may lead man astray in his evaluation of conduct: pity, pride, and laziness. Eventually, this text argues that responsibility in its most profound meaning does not respond to a given situation, but is an attempt to restore order in reality.
