Opis:
The aim of the paper was examining Granger causality between rates of return of precious metals. The study covers the period from 2008 through 2013 and includes gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. After developing statistical analysis and confirming stationarity of time series under consideration, the Granger causality test was run. Its results revealed a bilateral causation between silver and platinum rates of return. The study also detected causal relationships flowing from gold and palladium rates of return to silver returns.

Opis:
Since 50 years copper-silver ores have been extracted from the Lubin-Sieroszowice deposit located on the border between the Lower and Upper Permian sediments. It is a world class stratoidal type deposit. In the whole world the Kupferschiefer unit is recognized as a black, clayey organic-rich shale. The Cu-Ag deposit is a part of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, and is located on the border of the Lower and Upper Permian strata The monocline includes three rock complexes. The first is the basement, which comprises Proterozoic crystalline rocks and Carboniferous sediments. It is overlain by monoclinally dipping Permian and Triassic sedimentary rocks. In this work, study on ore mineralisation of the red variety of the Kupferschiefer are presented. Oxidation of the Kupferschiefer as an epigenetic phenomena. The oxidized zones reveal low concentrations of simple copper sulphides with the dominating chalcopyrite accompanied by bornite, pyrite, covellite, galena, clausthalite, chalcocite, digenite, spioncopite, geerite, native Au, electrum, tetraauricupride, naumannite, native Pb, Pd-arsenides and minerals of mixed composition: Au-Ag-Pb-Bi-Se-Te, Au-Ag-Pb-Te, Bi-Cu, Bi-Pd and Pd-As-O. Most important are natural alloys of precious metals, Pd-arsenides and oxidized phases (mostly Pd ones), which strongly influence the effectiveness of froth flotation. Precious metals form several parageneses: i - clausthalite - native Pb - electrum - AuPb2, ii - Pt-native Au - native Pd - sobolevskite - native Pb, iii - native Au - haematite - bornite - minerals of covellite-chalcocite group, iiii - electrum - tetraauricupride - chalcocite, iiiii - electrum - Pd-arsenides - tellurides - selenides - BiPd and CuBi natural alloys - Pd-oxides. The red Kupferschiefer variety is distinctly lower in carbonates and resembles rather a marl. Average Fe2O3 content is about 5 times higher than that in the grey Kupferschiefer. The average TOC content in the red Kupferschiefer is about 10 times lower than that in the black Kupferschiefer and about 5 times lower than that in the grey Kupferschiefer. Average Cu content is 1,070 ppm at variability coefficient 81% . The grey Kupferschiefer contains 3 times higher contents of Cu and its variability coefficient is 2 times higher, which points out to quantitative changes during the leaching of copper when secondary oxidation of deposit proceeded. Thus, low Cu and TOC values can be indicative for oxidizing environment and, consequently, can be good exploration guides to zones enriched in precious metals. Average Au content in the red Kupferschiefer is high 15.419 ppm, is much higher than that for the grey Kupferschiefer. Comparison of metal contents in samples from the oxidized zones reveal high variability of Au values in the red, which may change from a few ppm to over 100 ppm. Negative Cu-Au correlation supports the hypothesis on the introduction of gold into the red Kupferschiefer during the leaching of copper. Au horizon is continuous and located close to the bottom contour of Cu deposit. It includes the top part of the sandstone and extends down, even beneath 1 m from the top of the sandstone. The average thickness of the high-Au zones is 0.2 m, and various from 0 up to 1.4 meters. The Au and PGE deposit described in this paper fit well in the world criteria for economic-grade accumulations.

This article analyses the recycling of secondary waste in Polish recycling companies. An innovative method of processing PCBs is presented and trends that should be followed by plants processing non-ferrous metal waste are indicated. In conclusion, it is emphasised that the Polish WEEE recycling market is still at the early development and growth stage and the most important goals that enterprises should set themselves include cost optimisation, improvement of waste management logistics and increases in the level of recycling.

Opis:
The decision making process is directly associated with risk, no matter what area of interest it is. In the case of financial investments we can define a special type of risk called investment risk. Taking into account the financial time series of assets’ characteristics (prices, returns), small deviations of future values comparing to their expected level are not a major threat to the investor’s portfolio. In contrast, if the changes in prices/returns are significant, unpredictable and result from unexpected and adverse events, one should pay attention to the proper risk measurement. The topic of this article refers to the new family of risk measures related to investments in assets on the precious metals market. These risk measures are called the GlueVaR risk measures. The name itself suggests that the GlueVaR is related to the commonly used measure of risk – VaR. As will be presented in the article, the family of the GlueVaR risk measures may be expressed as a linear combination of VaR and conditional VaR for fixed tolerance levels. Moreover, the new risk measure allows for assessing risk more personally, taking into account the investor’s attitudes towards risk. If portfolio investments are of interest, the GlueVaR risk measures meet the assumption of subadditivity. This property of risk measure is required, as it is strongly related to the diver-sification problem.

Opis:
Calendar effects are anomalies in the behavior of asset prices that may disprove the efficient market hypothesis. The well recognized are: day-of-the-week effect, month-of-the-year effect, holidays effect and turn-of-the-month effect. These anomalies are observed in many financial markets, most often on stock exchanges, thus studies on calendar effects usually focus on stock markets. However, the aim of the paper is searching for the anomalies in precious metals markets (the empirical data covers London daily spot prices from 2008 through 2013). This is the continuation of authors’ prior research aimed at testing weak market efficiency hypothesis for precious metals markets.

Opis:
The recovery of precious metals is necessary for environmental and economic reasons. Spent catalysts from automotive industry containing precious metals are very attractive recyclable material as the devices have to be periodically renovated and eventually replaced. This paper presents the method of removing platinum from the spent catalytic converters applying lead as a collector metal in a device used to wash out by using mangetohydrodynamic stirrer. The article includes the description of the methods used for modeling of magnetohydrodynamic phenomena (coupled analysis of the electromagnetic, temperature and flow fields) occurring in this particular device. The paper describes the general phenomena and ways of coupling the various physical fields for this type of calculation. The basic computational techniques with a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages are presented.

Used electronic inverters were processed thermally to eliminate organic matrix components through oxidative incineration (IN), oxidative steam gasification (SG), and pyrolysis (PY). Such prepared material was melted at 1250°C with sodium/calcium silicate waste glass under reductive and oxidative atmospheres. The highest Cu recovery in the form of a gravitationally separated metallic phase was found for oxidative smelting of the PY sample and reductive smelting of the IN sample. Recovery of precious metals was analyzed, taking Cu recovery as the reference. It was found that the recovery of Pd was better than copper recovery in each experiment, and the recovery of Au was only in the oxidative smelting of the SG sample and reductive smelting of the IN sample. Recovery of Ag and Cu was similar but only for the reductive smelting of the PY and SG samples. It was demonstrated that Cu, as well as Au, Ag, and Pd recovery, substantially depends on the transport of metals through the metal/slag interface.
