Opis:
The present work reports the first anatectic melt inclusions found so far in the Mesoarchean basement in East Greenland. Using optical microscope observations and MicroRaman spectroscopy, we show that garnets in metasedimentary migmatite contain primary polycrystalline aggregates which can be confidently interpreted as former droplets of anatectic melt, i.e. nanogranitoids. In some cases, they coexist with coeval fluid inclusions under conditions of primary fluid-melt immiscibility. The re-evaluation of the metamorphic pressure and temperature conditions with up-to-date phase equilibria modelling, combined with the identification of nanogranitoids and fluid inclusions, suggests metamorphic peak equilibration and partial melting in presence of a COH-fluid at T ~1000°C and P > 7 kbar. To date, this is the oldest verified occurrence of nanogranitoids and fluid-melt immiscibility during garnet growth in a partially molten environment.

Opis:
Seismic refraction investigations, performed in Poland between 1964 and 1978, are reviewed. Examples selected from the many seismic profiles, totalling approximately 15 000 km in length, are shown. The most useful profiles as regards geological interpretation are in the Precambrian Platform and along its southwestern edge. Both the top of the crystalline basement and a system of faults, downfaulting the basement towards the south-west, can be identified in that area. In the Carpathians and its foreland, the top of this basement may be identified together with the bases of thrust flysch nappes. In the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, the top of folded Carboniferous deposits can be determined. The most ambiguous results were obtained from the Palaeozoic Platform.

Opis:
The Precambrian basement and Lower Paleozoic (Cambrian–Ordovician) sedimentary cover in the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Block (Brunovistulicum), known only in boreholes, is presented, and their palaeogeographic, facies and palaeotectonic development is discussed. The former is characterized by a heterogeneous structure that consists of Archean-Lower Proterozoic and Neoproterozoic rocks of different lithologies and origins, and the latter is almost exclusively represented by marine, transitional and terrestrial siliciclastic rocks. In contrast to the neighbouring region of the western part of the Małopolska Block, the siliciclastic sedimentation took place during the Early and Middle Cambrian in this area, however, the Ordovician deposits were encountered in several boreholes and no Silurian rocks have been reported in the northern part of this region. The authors present the most probable model of sedimentation, tectonics and origin of the geological structure of the Lower Paleozoic sedimentary cover in the Upper Silesian Block, define research problems, and justify the need for new drillings. Based on the geological and structural analysis of the depth to the top surface of the Lower Paleozoic, they define the optimal location for three 1500 m deep boreholes to solve the basic research problems.

Opis:
In the latest Precambrian and Early Cambrian, turbidity currents and cohesive flows transported pebbles, sand and mud into a deep water in south-east Poland, this sediment probably being sourced from Gondwana. Abundant detrital albite grains suggest volcanism during sedimentation. Pebbles in conglomerate interbeds are polymict and include rock fragments showing greenschist facies regional metamorphism in the source area. The Precambrian surface in the marginal part of the Carpathians lies at 2000-5000 m b.s.l., whereas farther south, around Kuźmina it reaches 7000 m. Still farther south (Krosno-Sanok-Baligród) geophysical evidence suggests it lies at about 17-20 km depth.

Opis:
The Archaean granitoid pluton of the Singhbhum craton in E India is overlain by Archaean to Palaeoproterozoic metasediments. These sediments are still poorly known and their stratigraphy is under debate. Several scattered, most probably Meso- to Neoarchaean, conglomerates are present in the state of Jharkhand that differ so much in characteristics that they are probably not related to each other. The sedimentology of a series of conglomerate patches and layers near Bhurkuli has been investigated, including the characteristics of the clasts. It is deduced on the basis of these characteristics and the sedimentological context that the Bhurkuli conglomerates represent the channel facies of a river system that differed from the types of fluvial systems that exist nowadays.

Opis:
Properties of selected Precambrian and Paleozoic sedimentary clastic rocks were analysed with respect to their reservoir potential. Multidimensional analysis of laboratory results and borehole logging data was used to construct digital models of pre-Mesozoic, deeply buried formations, present as tight, low-porosity and low-permeability rocks. This modern statistical and deterministic approach as applied to laboratory and borehole logging results worked to integrate data at different scales. The results obtained are useful not only in further scientific research but also found a use in industrial application. As a first step, statistical methods, including clustering and separation of homogeneous groups, enabled digital rock model creation on the basis of the results of such laboratory measurements as pycnometry, mercury porosimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy or computed X-ray tomography. Next, the models constructed were applied in borehole logging interpretation to find intervals with similar petrophysical properties within the group and different properties between the groups. This approach allowed implementation of upscaling procedures of laboratory experiments at micro- and nano-scale to borehole logging scale. High correlations were established between the log petrophysical parameters within the digital models. This approach can be used to divide the succession cored into intervals with different petrophysical parameters.

Opis:
Knowing the data from drilling works which had been carried out in a given area gives the opportunity to develop the next borehole with great precision. An important element of the design is to analyze and interpret data in detail, which can be used during the following drilling process. Based on a literature analysis, certain methods of the selection of drill bits have been indicated. Mechanic specific energy curves of drill bits applied in drilling works in northern Poland have been compared. The drilling works took place in the Precambrian platform. The compared mechanic specific energy curves were calculated with the use of R. Teale and H. Rabia equations. A relation between mechanical specific energy and pressure loss in polycrystalline diamond compact drill bits was determined. New drilling ratio TSE - Total Specific Energy which considers hydraulic power energy in the nozzles of the drill bit was calculated.

Opis:
A new geologic map of the crystalline basement of NE Poland has been constrained on the basis of the magnetic and gravity imaging, data from seismic profiles of POLONAISE'97 and CELEBRATION'2000, and extensive geochemical, isotopic and U-Pb dating studies of drill core samples. This updated reconstruction of the hidden southwestern margin of the East European Craton revealed of several late Svecofennian orogenic domains with ages in the range 2.0–1.74 Ga, belonging to the Fennoscandia. The age of these Paleoproterozoic domains is becoming regionally younger towards NW. Furthermore, there is two Paleoproterozoic domains, which form integral part of the westernmost youngest rim of the Sarmatia block. During the early Mesoproterozoic between 1.54 and 1.45 Ga intracratonic plutons of the AMCG suite intruded a large area of the Mazury-Warmia, Pomorze and SE Baltic region. Several deep-sourced ultramafic-alkaline bodies of Early Carboniferous age (354–338 Ma) are related to the youngest magmatic event.
