Opis:
Experience a traumatic situation usually entails negative consequences in the psychic dimension, including in the form of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, the traumatic experience may also lead to the emergence of positive changes, known as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Among the factors influencing growth after trauma stresses the importance of the individual properties of the man, including resiliency. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship occurring between the resiliency and negative and positive consequences resulting from experiencing a traumatic event. Study involved 80 patients after heart transplantation, implantation by-passes or artificial heart valve. The Assessment of Resiliency Scale (SPP-25) of the own design, and the Polish version of The Impact of Event Scale (IES-R) and The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) were used in the study. A key role in the prevention of symptoms of PTSD plays the properties of resiliency, such as optimistic attitude to life and the ability to mobilize themselves in difficult situations. In turn, the positive changes following trauma are related to openness to new experiences and a sense of humor and tolerance for failure and treatment of life as a challenge. Negative and positive effects experienced life events may co-occur with each other.

In the article we present data collected from 50 people who lost their motor ability in accidents. Analyses of narrative interviews conducted with the accident victims suggest that a positive affective tone of narratives about the accident itself and the accident’s influence on later life is connected to higher levels of posttraumatic growth. Other factors facilitating the experience of posttraumatic growth were hope and basic trust, as well as the theme of agency present in the narratives.

The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that positive affective tone of narratives is connected to the experience of posttraumatic growth among transplant patients. Kidney transplant patients (N = 51) and liver transplant patients (N = 48) participated in the study. In the first stage, about 10 weeks after transplant, the participants told two stories about important, freely chosen events from their lives. During the second meeting 10-12 months later we measured posttraumatic growth. Results indicated that the affective tone of narratives about past events was associated with the level of post-traumatic growth measured 10-12 months later. This proves that the affective tone of narratives about life, understood as a relatively constant individual characteristic, promote posttraumatic growth.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between posttraumatic growth, which was a consequence of experienced traumatic event and the level of satisfaction with life. The study group consists of 86 person (62 men and 24 women), aged 36-87 (M = 60,5; SD = 10,05), who experienced myocardial infarction. Half of them participated in rehabilitation program. Two methods were used in the study: Life Satisfaction Questionnaire and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. The results revealed poor relationship between positive changes aftermath trauma and life satisfaction. The overall score of Life Satisfaction Questionnaire correlates only with positive changes in relations to others. These changes appeared the main predictor of satisfaction with life among persons with myocardial infarction.

The study aimed to establish the relationship between ruminations and the occurrence of negative (posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms) and positive (posttraumatic growth) effects of trauma resulting from the experience of violence in the family. The data of 89 women who have experienced domestic violence were analyzed. The participants’ age ranged from 18 to 60 years (M = 34.36, SD = 12.81). The following Polish versions of standardized tools were used: the Impact of Event Scale, the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, and the Event-Related Rumination Inventory, the last of these measuring two types of ruminations: intrusive and deliberate. Both types of ruminations proved to be associated, above all, with posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Weaker associations were noted between the intensity of deliberate ruminations and posttraumatic growth. Intrusive ruminations played a predictive role with regard to posttraumatic stress disorder: above all, with regard to intrusion and arousal; deliberate ruminations proved to be a predictor of posttraumatic growth, mainly positive changes in self-perception and relations with others. Ruminations play an essential role in the occurrence of both negative and positive outcomes of the experienced trauma.

Opis:
By providing constant help to trauma victims, the helpers themselves run the risk of secondary traumatization. As a rule, research focuses on the negative consequences of secondary trauma. Meanwhile, there are also positive changes in the form of Secondary Posttraumatic Growth (SPTG). The present study describes the design and testing of a new tool for measuring SPTG. Thirty items were presented to employees from five different professions constantly working with trauma victims (N = 580). A 4-factor solution (PCA) turned out to be clear and unambiguously interpretable. After excluding items based on their component loading and redundancy, the tool was pared down to 12 items. A separate sample used in confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) yielded good fit indexes. The four dimensions were given the following designations: 1. New challenges and an increase in professional competences, 2. Increase in spiritual experiences and a greater sense of responsibility for others, 3. Greater confidence in oneself and appreciating life, 4. Increased acceptance and actions for others. Cronbach’s alpha was .90. The inventory demonstrated high stability, as indicated by the two-month test–retest stability value (.78). The theoretical validity was estimated by comparing SPTGI scores with other measures which should be associated with secondary positive changes. The SPTGI is a new, reliable, and valid instrument for measuring positive posttraumatic changes among professionals exposed to secondary trauma. It can be useful in scientific research and in clinical practice.

Opis:
Trauma, a word derived from Greek, literally means ‛injury‛. It is defined as a reaction to a strong emotional stimulus which cannot be processed at a specific moment in a person's life. Trauma makes one feel powerless. They are very uncertain about their future and feel as they have no control over it which leads to a great deal of anxiety. People differ in the way they react to a crisis. For some of them, crisis is a source of strength, whereas for others it cannot be ever processed in a constructive manner. The researchers in the field of psychology are looking for solutions to that problem. This paper presents the issues associated with the loss of a child and life after having worked through trauma (considering women and men alike). The research was conducted on the group of 44 individuals (including 22 women and 22 men) and was focused on the way they were coping with the loss of a child. The research was conducted at the ‛By Dalej Iść‛ Foundation ('to go on'). The research procedure was based on the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, which consists of statements that describe different changes which occur as a result of experiencing a traumatic event.

Opis:
The death of a child is one of the most difficult and painful experiences in an adult person’s life. Statistics reveal the terrifying frequency of this phenomenon. Several thousand children and young adults die every year as a result of diseases, accidents, homicide and suicides. Unfortunately, despite the universality of this experience, a child’s death is still a socially tabooed phenomenon. Depending on the type of loss, there are various difficulties for mothers and fathers with experiencing mourning. Lonely parents may be more likely to experience mental and somatic health problems, such as severe depression (Sanders, 1989), physical exhaustion (Rando, 1986), insomnia (Bowlby, 1980), dissociative disorders, or somatoform disorders (Łuszczyńska, 2011). Even a permanent change in personality being a result of complications in the course of mourning is a possible outcome. It was also noted that grieving parents often have tight and dysphoric affect associated with the experience of helplessness in the face of a loss. Felt anger is directed not only to the immediate environment, but above all to the grieving parents themselves, as a result of the growing sense of guilt (Johnson, 1987). The paper presents results of a study on the problems of a child’s death and the difficulties of parents in coping with the loss, which affects both the family and the society.

The aim of the study was to establish the role of posttraumatic growth for health behaviors of people in late adulthood period. The analyzed research group was 130 people in the age of 61-88 lat (M = 71,32; SD = 5,81), 60 were men (46,2% ) and 70 (53,8%) women. The group consisted of 70 generally healthy people – the participants of the Third Age University, and 60 patients of cardiology clinic. The research tools were Health Behaviors Inventory authored by Juczynski (2001) – to measure health behaviors, and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (authored by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996), in polish adaptation of Ogińskia-Bulik and Juczyński (2010)) – to measure posttraumatic growth. The responded seniors exhibited an average level of posttraumatic growth and above-average level of health behaviors. Age did not differentiated the level of health behaviors. Gender and type of traumatic experience were associated with health behaviors. The correlation and regression analysis confirmed the role of gender, type of trauma and posttraumatic growth indicators in manifesting health behaviors by seniors. The importance of posttraumatic growth in predicting health behaviors was different depending on the category of health-related behaviors.

Background: Experiencing a myocardial infarction threatens the health and life of the patient; therefore, it can be perceived as a traumatic event. Indeed, myocardial infarction may result in negative consequences, including symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is also possible to experience positive effects from traumatic events, which is expressed as posttraumatic growth. Personality characteristics, including type D (i.e., distressed) personality, are among several factors that have been shown determine the occurrence of negative and positive consequences after exposure to trauma. Aim of the study: The aim of the present study was to establish the role of distressed personality in the occurrence of negative and positive effects of trauma resulting from myocardial infarction. Material and methods: The study included a total of 80 patients after myocardial infarction. Sixty-three patients aged 43–85 years (M=67, SD=10.76) were included in the final analysis. The majority of respondents were men (61.9%). Patients completed a survey with three standardized measurement tools: the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and the Type D Scale (DS-14). Results: Negative affectivity was positively associated with PTSD symptoms, and this association was strongest for negative changes in cognition or mood. Social inhibition was not associated with PTSD symptoms, except for increased arousal and reactivity. Both dimensions of type D personality were positively related to one factor of posttraumatic growth: changes in the spiritual sphere. Conclusions: Reducing the severity of negative affectivity may decrease PTSD symptoms and thus contribute to improved psychosocial functioning among patients who have experienced myocardial infarction.

Introduction and aim. It is very important for nurses to experience post-traumatic growth in order to protect their mental health after traumatic events such as a pandemic. The aim of this study is to determine the post traumatic growth status of infection control nurses, who play an important role in health services in the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods. This study is a cross-sectional, descriptive study. The study was conducted with 170 infection control nurses working in infection control committees of hospitals in Turkey. “Nurse Descriptive Information Form” and “Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI)” were used as data collection tools in this study. Results. As a result of this research, the mean PTGI total score of the infection control nurses was 70.73±23.03, and it was determined that they experienced moderate growth from the sub-dimensions of the scale. Also it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the changes in philosophy of life sub-dimension scores of PTGI according to the age and marital status of the nurses. In addition, it was determined that there was a significant difference between the total PTGI scores according to the year of working as an infection control nurse and the loss of a relative of the healthcare worker due to the COVID-19 disease. Conclusion. In this study, it can be said that infection control nurses experienced a moderate post-traumatic growth after the COVID-19 pandemic. Age, marital status, working year and loss of a healthcare worker friend during the pandemic period seem to affect nurses’ post-traumatic growth. It is very important to determine the mental health of infection control nurses working on the front lines in the pandemic.

The study investigates the role of temperament in posttraumatic growth among people who experienced a death of someone close. A group of 74 participants - mostly women (63.5%), aged 21 to 74 years (M=38.4; SD=15.5), who lost a parent, a child, a spouse or a partner, a sibling or a very close friend completed questionnaires measuring levels of posttraumatic growth (the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory) and temperamental traits (the Formal Characteristics of Behaviour - Temperament Inventory). Results revealed that increased appreciation of life and improved relations to others are the most prevalent areas of posttraumatic growth. Findings suggest that such temperamental traits, as emotional reactivity, and to a lesser extent briskness and endurance play significant role in posttraumatic growth.

In 2014, the Eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk became a scene of military operations that continue until now. Data from 58 soldiers who have taken part in the Ukrainian conflict were analyzed in order to answer the following question: How do basic hope and various aspects of resiliency explain the intensity of different aspects of posttraumatic growth (PTG) in soldiers fighting in the East of Ukraine? Four stepwise regression analyses were conducted. In each of them one of particular aspects of PTG was the dependent variable, whereas the group of predictors consisted of basic hope and three aspects of resiliency. It turned out that Personal strength as well as Appreciation of life were positively related to Openness to new experiences and a sense of humor. Relating to others was strongly related to Basic hope. Finally, Spiritual change depended on Basic hope as well as Persistence and determination in action. Because of the small sample size, the results should be treated with caution. However, they seem to encourage further research concerning this group.

The age of teenagers ranged 16-17 years (M = 16.53; SD = 0.50). Personality Growth Questionnaire for the assessment of positive changes and Coping Responses Inventory – youth (CRI-48) to measure coping strategies with stress (both dispositional and situational version) were used in the study. The results indicated that slightly more than 28% of respondents reveal high level of personal growth. Significantly larger are the changes related to appreciation of life than self-perception and relations with others. Situational strategies appeared to significantly relate with personal growth. Taking actions aimed at solving the problem appeared to be the predictor of positive changes in self-perception. Seeking social support and alternative reinforcements are predictors of changes in relations with others.
