A central tenet of critical discourse analysis spells that language in discourse meant for mass consumption is often permeated with a reproduction and/or a resistance of certain ideologies, assumptions, and knowledge characteristic of different social groups making up the society. One of such best scenarios is news headlines narrating crisis- driven national discourse in Nigeria, where almost all national discourses are driven by certain inherent ideologies and political power. In this paper, we propose a discourse chain principle uncovering the underlying socio-psychological idiosyncrasies of the par- ticipants (inclusive of agents and recipients) and processes in most national discourses in Nigeria. Combining concepts in corpus methods with critical discourse analysis, the paper shows a basic approach to operationalising ideologies in notational form. Apply- ing corpus analytic method to 761 herdsmen news headlines extracted from Nigerian newspapers, the present paper nicely illustrates the extent to which these news headlines move the discourse-at-hand (i.e. herdsmen crisis) to discourse-around. Such movement is performed by reproducing institutionalised ideological patterns revolving around identity politics (ethnicity), religion, question of nationhood, corruption, citizenry distrust, and political power imbalance. The paper argues that this discursive movement is often driven by a chain of discourse that defines the existence of the nationhood.

Starting with a debate in September 2012 on the incorporation of domestic violence as a distinct offence in Hungary’s new Criminal Code, the issue of gender and proper womanhood has regularly re-surfaced in statements made by ruling coalition MPs in parliamentary debates. Drawing on discourse analysis, this study investigates a selection of these statements in the context of the government’s current policy and public discourse. The paper argues that these discourses outline an essentialist model reflective of a dominant ideology that is traditional, Christian, patriarchal and heteronormative, which, by hinting at women’s accountability for certain social ills, also allows for a chain of associations that ultimately results in the subversion of the overall social status of women, dividing and marginalising them further and discrediting any claims or actions aimed at establishing a more egalitarian society in the country

Celem badań przedstawionych w niniejszym artykule była analiza tekstów związanych z tematyką koronawirusa opublikowanych przez „Gazetę Wyborczą”, tj. polską gazetę opiniotwórczą. Zastosowano metodologię językoznawstwa korpusowego, która pozwala przeprowadzić analizę ilościową dużych zbiorów danych (korpusów językowych). Metodologia ta jest używana w językoznawstwie, jednak – jak pokazuje niniejsza analiza – można ją z powodzeniem zastosować do badań ilościowych dyskursu prasowego i politycznego. Dane analizowane były automatycznie przez programy komputerowe opracowane dla języka polskiego (Korpusomat) oraz przez narzędzia dostępne w systemie Sketch Engine, które pozwalają analizować dane w języku angielskim. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że w publikacjach prasowych w marcu i kwietniu koncentrowano się głównie na opisie wirusa i konsekwencjach zakażenia (hospitalizacja), natomiast artykuły publikowane między majem a lipcem zawierają informacje o potencjalnych szczepionkach i – w przeciwieństwie do faktów – podkreślają malejący trend zachorowań.
The aim of the study presented in this paper was to analyse how the topic of coronavirus was described by the Polish quality newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza” in the period between the 1st of March and the 12th of July 2020, i.e. the day of presidential elections in Poland. The methodology used in the investigation follows a corpus-assisted analysis, which allows one to conduct a quantitative study of large collections of data (language corpora). The methodology is typically used in linguistics, yet the study shows that it can be successfully employed in a quantitative analysis of press and political discourse. The data were analysed automatically by computer software dedicated to Polish language (Korpusomat) and by tools available in the Sketch Engine system that allow one to examine English language data. The study demonstrates that the theme of coronavirus presented in March and April focused largely on the description of the virus and the consequences of being infected (hospitalization), whilst the articles published between May and July contain more information about possible vaccines and, contrary to facts, they emphasise a declining trend in morbidity rates.

This paper examines how the Front National’s electoral victories could be explained, partially, in terms of a new discursive rhetoric adopted by Marine Le Pen. In order to compare rhetorical strategies used by both Marine and Jean-Marie Le Pen and their impact on their followers, we use comparable data, which consist of press articles published during the presidential campaigns of each politician and postings by online discussants related to interviews. Using corpus linguistics tools and lexical semantics, we assess how differently both leaders position themselves emotionally and how this emotional positioning is reconstructed within the postings of the viewers. Although no important quantitative difference can be observed in the number of emotion key-words they used respectively, a shift in both politicians’ rhetoric positioning can be observed when analyzing the context in which these keywords are embedded. If Jean-Marie Le Pen focuses on negative feelings towards the Other (anger, resentment), Marine Le Pen promotes a positive ethos (empathy) in order to detoxify the image of her party and broaden her electoral base.

Artykuł stanowi próbę przybliżenia specyfiki kontekstu, w jakim od kilku lat (2008-2014) prowadzony jest dyskurs dotyczący imigrantów oraz ich obecności w krajach nordyckich. Na przykładzie Danii, Szwecji oraz Finlandii zostały przedstawione rysy charakterystyczne sposobu argumentowania zwolenników oraz przeciwników liberalnej polityki migracyjnej. Analiza wybranych wypowiedzi polityków oraz osób aktywnych politycznie dostarczyła wniosków wskazujących na radykalizowanie się postaw niechętnych imigrantom.
The article offers an inside perspective on the political and cultural context that has been shaping the discourse about immigration and immigrants in the Nordic countries for several years (2008-2014). The case of Denmark, Sweden and Finland serve to exemplify countries which still experience vivid debates on whether or not the immigration policy should be made more restrictive. Analyzing pro and con arguments used by several politicians and politically active individuals allows to identify radicalization of anti-immigration attitudes.

Opis:
Every human activity has its own distinctive, diverse varieties of expression. Furthermore, specific genre patterns correspond to characteristic situations of language actions. In this article I approach the hearings before the Parliamentary Investigation Committee as a genological and communication phenomenon. The aim of the article is to define hearings before the Investigation Committee as a variety of text genre and to present its typological determinants. In this study I will attempt to answer the question whether the operation of the Investigation Committee was conducive to crystallizing a relatively new genre of political and media-related communication, as well as whether there exists a genre pattern of these hearings. In my analysis I paid special attention to the comparison between the questioning of witnesses during a court trial and before an investigation committee. I presented the structure of communication, linguistic rendition, non-linguistic conditions of hearings, and the impact of mass media on the shape of the statements that were produced. The analysis was limited to the hearings of the Parliamentary Investigation Committee for Betting and Gambling, which dealt with the so-called “Gambling scandal”. The language of expression during live coverage of these hearings was taken into account in this article. However, while examining the linguistic structure and the language layer, I rely on text transcripts which constitute a record of the said statements and which reflect its specific characteristics. Eleven transcripts of the Committee meetings were used in this study.

Public space of the post-communist Belarus can be viewed as a public and cultural space, where the “struggle over identity” between the official and the oppositional political discourses takes place and where both discourses claim their right to be the only voice of genuine Belarusianness. Articles presents the study of the definitions of the political identity of major “collective actor” of the Belarusian political sphere-“Belarusian nation.” The image of “Belarusianness,” on which an appropriate political ideology is built upon, was obtained from the official Belarusian ideology and the oppositional political ideologies. For analytical purposes texts were selected which deal with defining the Belarusian nation, describing the national idea, designating Belarus’ civilizational orientation.

The deputy’s draft bill amendment about the Animal Protection Act submitted to the Marshal of the Sejm in November 2017 was one of the most ambitious attempts in the Third Republic of Poland to improve the legal protection of animals. The loudest proposal in the project was to prohibit the rearing and breeding of animals for the purpose of obtaining fur from them. In the article, the Authors reflect on the reasons for the political failure of this project. In the conditions of such strong centralization of political power, was the resistance from big business really decisive? What political conditions would have to be met for such far-reaching socio-economic changes motivated by public morality and environmental protection? Why this issue aroused so many contradictory emotions in political discourse? What is more important: economic profits based on cruelty to animals or life of sentient, autonomous beings?
Парламентский проект поправки к закону о защите животных, представленный маршалу Сейма в ноябре 2017 года, был одной из самых амбициозных попыток законодательных мер по защите животных в Третьей Республике Польши. Самым громким предложением в упомянутом проекте был запрет о содержании и разведения животных на мех. В статье авторы затрагивают вопросы о политических причинах провала этого проекта. Стало ли сопротивление со стороны крупного бизнеса решающим в условиях такой сильной централизации политической власти? Какие политические условия должны быть выполнены для таких далеко идущих социально-экономических изменений, мотивированных общественной моралью и защитой окружающей среды? Почему вопрос о запрете разведения животных на мех вызывал такие противоречивые и сильные эмоции в политическом дискурсе? Что важнее: экономическая прибыль, основанная на жестоком обращении с животными или жизнь разумных и автономных существ?

The preamble of Constitution of Ukraine defines irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic course of Ukraine. “European Union”, “European integration”, “European values” and “European identity” are new and important terms in modern Ukrainian political and media discourses. Our paper presents a general theoretical overview of the European identity study and its influence on the process of European integration. We see the development of European identity as an important precondition for stable integration of new states, including Ukraine, to the European Union. The suggested analysis of the existing approaches to the European identity study demonstrates direct connections of the European identity evolution to the new political contexts,cultures and languages of the EU. Short overviews of two linguistics projects LINEE and ELDIA show that English does not threaten EU cultural and inguistic diversity and serves as a neutral common language with only a marginal national connotation. English is seen as lingua franca in EU, and many of non-native speakers of English perceive it as an instrument of further intercultural understanding and contact.
W preambule do Konstytucji Ukrainy zawarty jest zapis o nieodwracalności kursu strategicznego Ukrainy na uzyskanie członkostwa w Unii Europejskiej i w Organizacji Traktatu Północnoatlantyckiego. «Unia Europejska», «integracja europejska», «wartości europejskie» i «tożsamość europejska» to nowe i ważne pojęcia, mające szerokie zastosowanie we współczesnym ukraińskim dyskursie politycznym i medialnym. W niniejszym opracowaniu zaprezentowano ogólny przegląd zagadnień teoretycznych z zakresu badań nad tożsamością europejską oraz nad jej wpływem na procesy integracji europejskiej. Uważamy, że rozwój tożsamości europejskiej jest jedną z ważnych przesłanek do stabilnej integracji nowych państw, łącznie z Ukrainą, z Unią Europejską. Zaprezentowana analiza istniejących podejść do badania tożsamości europejskiej wskazuje na bezpośredni związek ewolucji tożsamości europejskiej z nowym politycznym kontekstem, językami i różnymi kulturami Unii Europejskiej. W wyniku krótkiego przeglądu dwóch projektów lingwistycznych LINEE i ELDIA stwierdzono, że język angielski nie zagraża różnorodności językowej i kulturowej UE i służy jako neutralny wspólny język z nieznacznymi narodowymi konotacjami. Język angielski nadal będzie pełnić rolę europejskiej lingua franca. Wielu osób, dla których język angielski nie jest językiem ojczystym, uważa, że sprzyja on relacjom międzykulturowym i porozumieniu.

This article aims at describing the use of the threat in political communication, understood and analyzed in rhetorical and discursive terms. The author examines the position of threat in the theory of rhetoric as well as the use and functions of threat in contemporary Polish political discourse. The fi nal part of the article has been devoted to case study of using the threat as a way of speaking about political opponents.

The article describes reflections of political and ideological identity of Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej. This problem is considered from two points of view – firstly by looking at selfimage created by SLD, on the other hand based on the opinions of scholars, political commentators, journalists and polls about public perception of political phenomena. The purpose of the article is to pay attention to the dilemmas and inconsistencies resulting from political activity of the party. The main intention was to try to answer the question about sources of problem with identity of SLD.

Birds are a rich source for metaphors in paremias that are known to be a significant rhetorical force in various modes of communication. This article deals with the repertoire of ornithological proverbial texts utilized in the Soviet leader’s public speeches and memoirs, as well as in their English translations. The metaphor human is bird, in which there are various grounds of comparison, is explored. The peculiarities of using avian metaphors in the context of the original and the ways of their translation into English are scrutinized as well. The analysis of the material shows that the main features, shared by the Target (human) and the Source (bird species), are grounded on physiological characteristics and behavioral traits, having a negative slant. The equivalent and literal translations are applied as the main methods of rendition. Of particular interest are the metaphorical “animalistic metamorphoses” found in translation.

Opis:
The article analyses contents of speeches of parliament members in Sejm of the Republic of Poland during the parliamentary discussion of February 5th, 2015 over the information for Sejm and Senat of the Republic of Poland on Poland’s participation in the works of the EU between July and December 2014. The purpose of the analysis of the parliamentary discourse was to indicate differences and similarities in opinions of the representatives of major political powers in Poland within the scope of assessment of the foreign policy of the European Union. The analysis shows mainly lack of coherence in the foreign policy of the EU and existence of clear, firm division at the level of assessment of role/ meaning of Poland in the given area of activity.
Artykuł stanowi analizę treści wystąpień posłów w Sejmie RP podczas sejmowej dyskusji z 5 lutego 2015 r. nad informacją dla Sejmu i Senatu Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej o udziale Rzeczypospolitej w pracach UE w okresie lipiec–grudzień 2014 r. Celem analizy dyskursu parlamentarnego było wskazanie na podobieństwa i różnice postaw przedstawicieli głównych sił politycznych w Polsce w zakresie ocen polityki zagranicznej Unii Europejskiej. Autor ukazuje przede wszystkim brak spójności w polityce zagranicznej UE oraz istnienie wyraźnego, trwałego podziału na poziomie ocen roli/znaczenia Polski we wskazanym obszarze aktywności.

During the period discussed in the article (1997 - 2005) actors from the Polish political scene were deeply divided by their history - being a part of "Solidarność" or having communist roots. In the process of building their political identity, both right-wing and left-wing parties didn't strive for removing historical divisions but instead they exposed them in order to emphasize their distinctive features. The effect was that communist history became legitimization not only left-wing but also right-wing which was originally born as a symbol of struggle against communism. An assumption taken in this article is that all kind of language including political language is the ever-transforming process being the outcome of changes in social consciousness. This idea contradicts the theory according to which Polish political scene is ruled by ritual chaos. First of all the very target of political discourse is to be listened and supported and this is achieved by being flexible to the audience which requires also being organized and creative. The other politics feature supporting my point of view is richness of rhetoric and phraseology used in discourse. Such associations as those with death, religion or love that were applied in analysed articles are very vivid and thus emotions they cause can be quite strong, which makes political problems crucial on the grand social scale. Finally it is hard to talk about ritual chaos when the great consequence of political discourse is the change in people's attitudes. It appears that the audience influenced by colourful words of politicians and journalists is able to modify their memory about their own history. What we encounter here is the authentic social change that is only possible when social drama is played.
