    Opis:
    In the early 1890s the traditional allegiance of the readers of Tygodnik Powszechny to the realistic creed of the Polish Positivism began to falter. As the decade wore on their attention was increasingly attracted by the new, modernist approach to the arts, propagated by Ignacy Matuszewski in Tygodnik Ilustrowany. It was in fact a moderate modernist aesthetics, rooted in conservatism and tailored to fit the tabloid profile of that weekly. Unlike the more highbrow Cracow periodicals Tygodnik Ilustrowany cultivated an image of a moderately progressive magazine with a popular appeal. Its editors sympathized with the ideas of the Young Poland movement and its patriotic and romantic revivalism. Theirs was a modernism stripped of elitist aestheticism and tilted heavily towards a social and national engagement practiced by Stanisław Wyspiański and Stefan Żeromski.

    This is a second instalment of the article on the Warsaw Przyjaciel Dzieci, whose first part appeared in the previous issue of the RHHP. The author examines the popular science contents of the periodical in the area of natural science, geography and travel, ‘good behaviour’ and history, while paying close attention to the way in which the editors coped with censorship, especially in the field of history and geography. He also takes note of the critical voices which made themselves heard in the final stage of Gregorowicz’s career as editor-in-chief.

    Opis:
    This article examines the geography and travel segment of the weekly Wiek Młody [Young Age], published in Lwów in 1893–1904. The material covered includes the itinerary, a specific subgenre that could often be found in magazines for children and teenagers at the turn of the 19th century. Apart from a series of quantitative and qualitative analyses of 54 texts, i.e. over 284 pages, this study also surveys the magazine’s themes and narrative formats.
    Przedmiot rozważań stanowi tematyka geograficzno-podróżnicza, w tym itineraria, specyficzny rodzaj wypowiedzi obecny na łamach czasopism dla dzieci i młodzieży na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Badania wykonano na przykładzie lwowskiego tygodnika „Wiek Młody”, wydawanego w latach 1893–1904. Uwzględniono aspekty ilościowe i jakościowe, w tym także tematykę i formy wypowiedzi. Łącznie szczegółowej analizie poddano 54 teksty o objętości przeszło 284 stron.

    Newspapers were one of the instruments of reaching out to the general public by the new political parties at the turn of the 19th century. This was also the case with the activists of the National League who, in the run-up to the founding of the Democratic-National Party in 1904, launched their own paper Tygodnik Polski (Polish Weekly), focused on social and political issues.

    In 1894–1914 the Legal Chronicle of the Gazeta Lwowska reprinted Galician court rulings concerning press materials confiscated by the prosecution. This article surveys these rulings and the justification they offer for upholding or rejecting the prosecutor’s confiscation orders as well as his reasons for classifying the publication of the impugned text as a (potential) offence or a crime.

    W latach 1897–1915 ośmiu twórcom (Teodor Bobowski, Ludwik Małolepszy, Hieronim Stefanowicz, Joachim Sołtys, Idzi Świtała, Sylwester Czarnecki, Zygfryd Kąkolewski i Eryk Średzki) „Gazety Kościańskiej”, od 1902 r. wydawanej jako „Gazeta Polska”, wytoczono procesy prasowe, w wyniku których musieli oni zapłacić 1535 marek grzywny i odsiedzieć w więzieniu trzy miesiące i jeden dzień. Ponadto w większości wypadków sądy zezwoliły na zamianę kary finansowej na pobyt w więzieniu.
    Between 1897 and 1915 eight editors and contributors of Gazeta Kościańska (which changed its name to Gazeta Polska in 1902) were charged with violations of the Prussian press law. In a series of trials Teodor Bobowski, Ludwik Małolepszy, Hieronim Stefanowicz, Joachim Sołtys, Idzi Świtała, Sylwester Czarnecki, Zygfryd Kąkolewski and Eryk Średzki were sentenced to a total of 1535 marks in fines and three months and one day of imprisonment. However, in most cases the fines were commuted to terms of imprisonment.

    The first part of this article focuses on one strand in the history of the weekly magazine Przyjaciel Dzieci (The Children’s Friend) under the editorship of Jan Skiwski (1892–1911), i.e. the gradual revision of the rules concerning the selection of its literary content, laid down by his predecessor Jan Kanty Gregorowicz (1867–1890). Skiwski modified them without abandoning the principles and artistic models of 19th century realism.
    Pierwsza część artykułu przedstawia dzieje wydawnicze tygodnika „Przyjaciel Dzieci” za redakcji Jana Skiwskiego (1892–1911) i przeobrażenia jego zawartości literackiej, polegające na ostrożnej rewizji zasad z czasów kadencji Jana Kantego Gregorowicza (1867–1890) przy zachowaniu podstawowych związków ze wzorcami artystycznymi epoki pozytywizmu.

    Gazeta Polska w Berlinie was launched at the end of the 19th century, a time when the Polish migrant community in Berlin became sufficiently strong to be able to support its own newspaper. Published between 1890 and 1897, its aim was to keep alive and foster the migrants’ Polish identity and to report on current events in Poland and worldwide. Although the Gazeta Polska w Berlinie cultivated a decidedly patriotic tone, it was not very popular with its target audience. As a result it never got out of financial straits and eventually had to close in 1897.

    The second part of this article examines the content of the main sections of the weekly magazine Przyjaciel Dzieci [The Children’s Friend] (1892–1911), i.e. popular science; travel, geographical and ethnographical materials; biography; a section called “teaching actions”; and religion. Also covered are miscellanea, practical tips, puzzles and cartoons, as well as new sections “About the World” and “Educational Games and Entertainment”. Finally, the article looks at a review published by Poradnik dla Czytających Książki [A Guide for Book Readers] in 1901, whose author claims that some of the information in Przyjaciel Dzieci is outdated or obsolete.
    Druga część artykułu przedstawia zawartość głównych działów „Przyjaciela Dzieci” lat 1892–1911, takich jak dział artykułów i pogadanek popularnonaukowych, podróżniczo-krajoznawczo-etnograficzny, życiorysów, tzw. „czynów nauczających” oraz dział religijny. Omawia również działy ciekawostkowo-rozrywkowe: tzw. „artykuły różnej treści”, nowe działy „Ze świata” i „pożyteczne zabawy i rozrywki”. Zaprezentowano także ostry atak na anachronizmy treściowe warszawskiego tygodnika przeprowadzony w r. 1901 na łamach „Poradnika dla Czytających Książki”.
