Opis:
The article presents the count and spatial distribution of the Polish population living on the territory of contemporary Belarus in the second half of the past century. The basis for the analysis were official population censuses which took place in the Soviet Union in 1959, 1970, 1979 and 1989 and in the Republic of Belarus in 1999 and in 2009. Two criteria of ethnicity have been considered: nationality and mother tongue. The number of Polish people has been established for the whole period on the provincial level and for 2009 on the district level. The results of subsequent censuses revealed a numerical regress of the Polish population. The article explains the reasons underlying this process, which was an effect of the existing sociopolitical situation.

Summary: The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of renal venous system congenital anomalies in the Polish population. Material and method: Vascular kidney samples were investigated by means of preparations and X-ray contrasting. The study the group comprised 281 male and 269 female specimens. Results: Congenital anomalies were diagnosed in 186 patients (33 8% of all cases), and they were more frequent in men than in women, albeit that difference was non-significant. The following anomalies were most commonly observed: multiple venous variations on the right side (20.4%), retroaortic course of the left renal vein (4.2%), and circumaortic venous ring of the left renal vein (3.8%). Other anomalies were diagnosed in 1%-2% of cases. Conclusions: Awareness and preoperative assessment of the venous system before abdominal aortic surgery, isolated collection of renal venous blood samples, and urological or kidney transplantation procedures is essential.

Objectives. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between selected socio-demographic factors and tooth loss in patients using removable dentures. Materials and method. The study comprised 321 individuals, all of whom were residents of the Lublin province in southeastern Poland. The study investigated the influence of socio-demographic factors, such as gender, age and education on the severity of tooth loss. To analyze the structure of tooth loss, the classifications by Galasińska-Lansberger and by Eichner were used. The results were analyzed statistically. Results. Edentulous gaps and lateral edentulism in the maxilla were significantly more frequent in women, while mixed tooth loss was more frequent in men, while the percentages of men and women with maxillary edentulism were similar. There were no statistically significant gender-specific differences concerning mandibular edentulism. The number of individuals who reported total tooth loss in both the maxilla and the mandible increased with age, the differences being statistically significant. Individuals with primary education only were significantly more likely to report maxillary edentulism, while a high percentage of those with secondary or higher education reported edentulous gaps in the maxilla. There was no statistically significant relationship between education and the type of tooth loss in the mandible. Conclusions. There is a strong relationship between age and education level on the one hand, and the severity of tooth loss on the other. However, gender exerts no significant influence on tooth loss, which was confirmed using 2 classifications of edentulism.

Opis:
The study was based on field research. The main goal of the work was to determine the level of consumer awareness of regional products and to examine the statistical relationship between the age and education level of respondents and their declaration of purchasing this type of product. Data collection was performed in Sudeten districts, because the described study was part of a research project concerning the introduction of a new regional product „Sudeten Beef” into this area. The study was conducted in 2012 using direct interviews with 219 respondents. On the basis of the investigation it could be said that the surveyed respondents had little awareness of regional products. The statistical analysis confirmed a weak correlation between age and level of education and declarations of purchasing regional products. This study is of a preliminary character and the results are not representative of the whole Polish population, but they should be regarded as a good starting point for further in-depth research.
Analiza statystyczna potwierdziła słabą zależność pomiędzy wiekiem i poziomem wykształcenia a deklaracjami zakupów produktów regionalnych.

Opis:
Polymorphisms in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were analyzed in 152 samples from the Polish population using restriction enzymes AvaI, BamHI, HaeII, HpaI and PstI. Additionally, each sample was classified into the appropriate haplogroup. When required, appropriate fragments were sequenced to establish the exact polymorphic sites. We found one new morph for PstI and six new morphs for AvaII. Some detected morphs have previously been described as population specific morphs in different regions of the world. All polymorphisms were classified into 31 different haplotypes. 21 of them were detected in single individuals. The Polish population was compared with other populations from different regions. Moreover, we have obtained evidence for mutation hot spots in the mtDNA coding region. Our results indicate that AvaII morph and haplogroup composition of the Polish population is similar to other European populations and has a distribution typical for this part of the world. However, statistically significant differences in haplogroup composition were found between the Polish population and Italian and Finnish populations.

Opis:
The military and political outcome of World War I, and the deliberations of the Paris Peace Conference, offered a real chance for the rebirth of Polish statehood. A key issue was the justification of Poland’s future territorial shape, in which ethnic issues played a significant role alongside historical, economic and strategic criteria. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss selected archival nationality maps, often of an expert nature, produced by Polish scholars for the purpose of negotiating the territorial extent of Poland during the Paris Peace Conference. To what extent were they an attempt at an objective representation of the national reality of the Polish territory, and to what a subjective perception and experience of space by the authors of the maps? What were the aims and ideas of their creators, what did they want to achieve? To what extent did the political reality of the time determine their behaviour?

Opis:
In the article the results are presented of the latest censuses carried out in Byelorussia in 1999, and in Lithuania and the Ukraine in 2001. The basic task of the study was to determine how big the Polish population was. The Byelorussian census showed 396 thousand, the Lithuanian one – 235 thousand, and the Ukrainian one – 144.1 thousand Poles. Altogether in the three mentioned countries bordering upon Poland the official census data showed 775.1 thousand Poles. This was 98.1 thousand fewer than the previous census carried out in the Soviet period (1989) showed. The author tries to explain the causes of this state of things. Earlier assessments done by Polish researchers showed that the data from Soviet censuses lowered the number of Poles and it was expected that the censuses carried out under new circumstances would show a considerably bigger Polish population. The results of these censuses did not confirm these research hypotheses. The constant decrease in the number of Poles in Byelorussia, Lithuania and the Ukraine results from assimilation processes that have been stimulated by social and economic changes. In the next part of the article the author tried to present the distribution of the Polish population according to the administrative units of the province or district level. A special attention was paid to the Vilnius district in Lithuania and the Grodno province in Byelorussia. In both these areas the Polish population tends to concentrate. On the other hand, the processes of atrophy of the Polish population go on in the Ukraine. This is due to the diffusion of the Polish population and its gradual sinking into the Ukrainian community.

Trends in daily cigarette smoking among women at childbearing age, Poland 1974–2004This paper analyzes changes in daily smoking among Polish women at childbearing age (15–49). The analysis is based on nation-wide  randomized surveys of adult Polish population (aged 15+) from 1974–2004. Study results show rapid increase of daily smoking rates in women at childbearing age from around 22% to 39% between 1974 and 1982. Since then, daily smoking has constantly decreased in this population (to around 30% in 2000–2004). The analysis also showed that in 1974 daily smoking rates in high educated women were much higher (20%) than in low educated women (13%). Today, the highest rates of daily smoking are observed in low educated women (32%) and the  lowest in high educated women (21%). It was caused by biggest decline in daily smoking in higher educated women as compared with lower educated women. Above changes create new challenges in tobacco control and require new strategy in smoking prevention programs addressed to women population.

Genetic variation of twelve Polish populations of Primula veris L. from western Poland was investigated in respect of six enzyme systems: 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), diaphorase (DIA), menadione reductase (MNR), formate dehydrogenase (FDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT). Only two of them (6PGD and DIA) were polymorphic and all populations were compared according to four loci and eight alleles. For 6PGD only one out of the two detected loci (locus 6PGD-2) was polymorphic and consisted of three alleles a, b and c. For DIA each of two detected loci had two alleles. For 6PGD-2 one population was monomorphic and four populations were monomorphic for DIA-1 and DIA-2. The rest of the populations were polymorphic with low frequency of heterozygotes. The low heterozygosity level, found in the examined populations, was confirmed by high values of the fixation index (F). The level of genetic differentiation among GST populations specified for each polymorphic loci, was equal to 0.045 for 6PGD-2 and had the value of 0.078 for DIA-2 and 0.186 for DIA-1. Nm value for polymorphic loci was 1.10 for DIA-1 and 2.94 for DIA-2, and for 6PGD-2 was 5.33, what indicates some gene flow between the examined populations. The dendrogram constructed on the basis of genotype frequencies showed that the populations were divided into two groups, however the most southern population No. 2 was clearly similar to the northern population No. 8.
