Opis:
The aim of the article is to answer the following research questions: (1) Which memory images can be reconstructed in the binational discourse about expulsions? (2) Which processes of linguistic realisation do they undergo? (3) How are they discursively negotiated? The focus is thus placed on the act of talking about memory in press texts in the understanding of WojciechChlebda (2012), where media actors are ‘observers’ and ‘narrators’ of memory (cf. Chlebda 2012: 111), and memory im- ages (re)constructed by them differ both with respect to the way of talking about the subject of memory and about the content of memory. The standpoint represented in this article is that in the discourse about expulsions, German and Polish memories interact with each other as two separate, oppositional memories, which are determined by differing collective knowledge about the past. Collective memory is understood as knowledge about the past shared and linguistically negotiated by a certain community; the past that undergoes certain processes of reconceptualisation, which is influenced by various social, political and media factors (cf. Czachur 2016a: 89–90). Thanks to such an approach to the research questions mentioned at the beginning, the following article is part of the research programme dealing with interdisciplinary linguistics of memory, postulated i.a. by WaldemarCzachur (2018: 44–48). Firstly, the aim is to distinguish memory images activated by the discourse. In the analysed corpus, these memory images are (a) historical memory and memory about the historical truth(b) memory about expulsions and lack of memory about expulsions (delegitimisation of the subject of memory) and (c)institutionalised, politicised memory. Secondly, linguistic and discursive characteristics of the above mentioned memory images, i.e. linguistic realisations of these memories in both discourses, are specified. Thirdly, on the basis of the analytic tools developed i.a. by German discourse linguistics, reproducible interpretative patterns are formulated. These patterns shall be understood, respectively, as a questioning of the existing concept of ‘victim’ (Chapter 4.1), delegitimisationof the key discourse notion of ‘expulsion’ (Chapter 4.2), as well as metaphorical con- ceptualisation of remembrance as a ‘fight,’ ‘battle,’ or ‘war’ (Chapter 4.3). Fourthly, linguistic and discursive practices that create conflict between both discourses of memory are described on that basis.

The authors use the adjective ‘testimonial’ (orig. ‘świadeczny’), i.e. ‘bearing witness, confirmed by testimonies’ to propose an analysis of bottom-up figurations of the role of witness, which are present in communities living in the vicinity of uncommemorated sites of the dispersed Holocaust. The eponymous ‘testimoniality’, or the disposition for bearing testimony or being a witness, is examined as a special situation in which the sites of past violence engage witnesses, both human (e.g. neighbours and guardians) and non-human: the landscape, the biotope, objects, various gestures and relations. By proposing categories grounded in the material gathered during field research, the authors analyse functions which can be referred to as testimonial, or seeking to give testimony to the past. The result is a lexicon of testimonial actors, practices, objects and words.

Opis:
The present article discusses works by Łukasz Orbitowski and Paweł Demirski, two authors representing the young generation of Polish writers whose texts stand in the opposition to a worn-out and highly ritualised trend of national-symbolic interpretations of memory. The debunking literary strategy of both authors relies heavily on the aesthetics of subversion. Choosing for Spectres the genre of historical fantasy, Łukasz Orbitowski provides himself with a vast space of artistic freedom, using it for free reinterpretations and continuations of the existing narratives of memory. The theatre of Paweł Demirski and Monika Strzępka, in turn, is a theatre of linguistic performance which clashes sequences of language that transmit historical imagination and national self-awareness of Poles. In Demirski’s play theatre becomes a medium of protest against fossilised forms of memory, where graphically staged painful trauma is deprived of the aura of sacrum. Triviality and vulgarism of language demolish both the elevated phrases of the national culture of memory and the naïve pop-cultural representations of war and the Warsaw Uprising.

The World War II has left an emotional wound, and its direct victims as well as new generations have to cope with it. The main subject of my presentation will be an analysis of methods for presenting World War II history in against the background of a theory of memory and postmemory of war’s trauma through the example of picturebooks which were published in Poland during the first two decades of the XXI century. I would like to discuss the main trends in presenting the issues pertaining to the war. The transcription of the Second World War memory into picturebooks is especially interesting for me as a historian of art. I analyse the artistic styles adapted by the artists to express difficult topics, such as the holocaust, the horror of concentrations camps, hunger, fear, loss of family, death. Composition, artistic techniques, colour, vocabulary, typography – these are the tools in the hands of artists through which they can not only tell the story, but also stir up emotions and shape the personality. The picturebook, like other types of art, operates through the language of fiction to tell the truth. Art is one of the languages of historical narration.

Opis:
Whilst Poland appears today as a paradigmatic example of a homogeneous, exclusive national and cultural identity, reinforced by the hegemonic historical policy of a semi-authoritarian state, it is also challenged by Polish minority histories (civilian, multi-ethnic, non-Catholic, women). The main concern of the present article is the plural ‘Polishness’ that emerges from the constellation of these non-default histories. To examine the frictions of historical narratives in action, authors use spaces of historical museums as a field of observation, perceiving them as memory agents fostering not only confrontational but also negotiative memory politics. To identify situations in which tensions between the ‘central’ Polishness and its unorthodox variants are particularly evident, the paper takes a look at ‘non-central’ Polish territories i.e. ‘post-German’ areas, characterized by a complex heterogeneous past in which Germanness and Polishness, but also ‘Silesianness’ or ‘Borderlandness’ mutually clash and dialogue. Analysis of selected exhibitions’ construction reveals peculiarities of different local contexts in transitional spaces and strategies of resolving creeping conflicts between ‘the Polishness’ and plural, peripheral ‘Polishnesses’. As authors argue, these case studies – instead of a static model of open memory conflict and binaries – offer dynamic models of memory, and allow to introduce the concept of memory frictions.

The goal of this article is to review the possibilities and limitations of applying Aleida and Jan Assmann’s concept to the study of local memory, using as an example the memory of inhabitants of the Polish town of Olsztyn. The author first briefly presents selected key premises of Aleida and Jan Assmann’s concept of culturalmemory. She then addresses the question of how the Assmanns’ concept is received and interpreted in Poland. Discussion of these issues leads to an analysis of the advantages and difficulties of applying the two German scholars’ theoretical proposals to the study of memory in local communities. The author refers to the case of a moderately aggregated, urban society with a complicated multiethnic past. Her conclusions concern the challenges scholars face in adopting Aleida and Jan Assmann’s theoretical perspective for studying memory and local communities in this part of Europe

In this paper I discuss the possibilities of interpreting the archival materials of the Polski atlas etnograficzny by means of modern theories of memory. Referring to the theory of representation, memory locations or microhistory, new contexts of the functioning of phenomena or behaviours that are studied may be found in the records that were collected. The value of the source materials is not only in their substantive content but also in the scale of research with which they were collected. The atlas data, despite all their limitations, provide ample opportunities for the interpretation of such representations of the past, being a true reservoir of them. In many cases they require an individual approach, the knowledge of the specific context and a presentation of the interpretations in the form of a specific microhistory. Some, however, are experienced by a larger group of people, thus legitimizinginferences of a more general nature.

Opis:
On Polish-Ukrainian neighbourhood. In reaction to Wojtek Smarzowski's movie 'Volhynia'The article attempts at answering the question whether the movie “Volhynia” (pl. Wołyń) translates into the Polish-Ukrainian relationship and, if yes, how? Does Smarzowski’s work play bigger role in the construction of the relation between the nations or rather in the construction of one nation’s certain identity project? In the search of the data necessary to provide an answer, I have conducted a content analysis of the discourse created after the movie premiere as well as a questionnaire study among the students of the social sciences. The conclusions arising from the performed analyses are ambiguous-on the one hand, historical events determine the view of the neighbours; on the other hand, Volhynia understood as a memorial appears not be included in the modern Ukrainianness. Hence, it seems that the most accurate ascertainment is that while in certain social circles the movie “Volhynia” became a factor activating particularly intensive observation of the neighbour (or mutual observation), in others it did not evoke any change in the attitude towards the Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Opis:
Sport may seem trivial, but it can reveal much about the absorption of immigrants into the ways of life of the United States in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries. Usually, the first generations of immigrants were uninterested in sport “careers”. It was their American-born sons and grandsons, eager to blend into their native surroundings, who took up these amusements and made them their own; and the more they did so, the more they came to be, and to feel themselves “Americans” of European background rather than transplanted Europeans. Moreover, since success in athletics did not require the advantages of breeding, education, or status enjoyed by the Yankee elite, professional sport frequently offered the descendants of immigrants their first opportunities to succeed and receive acclaim from the wider society. The paper focuses on Stanley Ketchel, the best middleweight boxer and the first Polish-American sports champion. Yet in spite of his undeniable sporting renown, one accolade Ketchel seems never to have won was acceptance as a genuine “ethnic hero” of Polonia.

The purpose of the article is to verify the hypothesis that the idea of Polish heroism constitutes an effectively duplicating and spreading meme, and stories of the past constructed in the framework of Polish politics of memory will be effective precisely when they refer to memes duplicated most often in the community. The article proves therefore that the Polish state politics of memory should be shaped on the basis of memes that replicate the most in Polish society, because only then does it have a chance to achieve its goals. What is more, this principle can also be applied to other countries that pursue a politics of memory. It was possible to obtain answers to the research questions raised in the text (in order to verify the hypotheses) due to the use of mutually complementary research methods: analysis of narrative structures and content analysis. The article presents the results of the author’s own research with comments and conclusions.

In this concept a place or figure can act as a transmitter of national common values or a center around which visions of the past can be formed. Places of memory (lieux de mémoire) are also special kinds of symbols because of their visual character. In the article I try to highlight this based on (mainly) literature of Polish romanticism. A visual character of both figures and its connection with Polish identity and historical discussions make them vital and important motif of Polish past and imaginary.

Jedwabne discussion
Opis:
"Objectivity fetish." Our Class by Tadeusz SłobodzianekOur Class was received in Poland with enthusiasm. The author was praised for his courage and his voice was considered a balanced part of the Jedwabne pogrom discussion, taking place in Poland since 2000. Why this enthusiasm now, when the publication of the Neighbours was received without it? What changes to narration about Jedwabne provided by Słobodzianek were so successful? The article described the drama’s reception which turns out to be selective. It also refers to the play’s text, bringing out two orders of presenting and explaining the events. Firstly, Our Class creates a picture of interpersonal relations where social mechanisms of discrimination are erased. This thread is picked up and developed by the Polish reviewers. The Slaughter on Jews becomes an outcome of a conflict between two equal groups with similar possibilities of action and agency and therefore not linked to domination of the majority over the minority. Hence, the symmetry of harm and as a consequence, the question of guilt and the alleged tragedy of the characters becomes unsolvable. That is supported by psychological explanations of motives and behaviours, modelled on family relations. The viewpoint of the event’s participants, that is a discrimination symptom itself, is being treated as an objectifying description. Seen up close and psychologized fates of the characters veil the background of the dominating group’s violence. This violence can be explained only in sociological terms. However Słobodzianek refers also to descriptions on a social level. In that manner he constructs the scene of Rachelka’s wedding and the handling of her salvation after the war relating it to extraordinarily described phenomena of the Righteous Among the Nations’ social functioning. He notices and describes subordination rituals organised for the Survivors and the Survivor’s mimicry. Those threads were completely ignored by the reviewers, however. They were also unable to break through the narration structures of the first type, which are more recognisable. Wątek ten podchwytują i rozwijają polscy recenzenci. Wymordowanie Żydów okazuje się następstwem konfliktu równorzędnych grup z podobnymi możliwościami działania i sprawstwa, a więc nieuwikłanych w stosunki dominacji większości nad mniejszością. Stąd wynika symetria krzywd, a w konsekwencji nierozstrzygalność pytania o winę i domniemany tragizm aktorów zdarzeń.

This article takes a look at contemporary Polish prose dealing with theme of the Shoah. “Contemporary”, in this case, means fiction published in the 1990s and after the year 2000, thus already in the twenty-first century. It therefore comprises the last twenty-five years. The fundamental categories used here in the analyses of texts, are the memory and post-memory of the Shoah. The authors who have published works over the last twenty five years have either been witnesses of these events (i.e. Children of the Holocaust), or – more often – representatives of the second or third generation after the Shoah. In this article, contemporary Polish fiction will be exemplified by the prose of Marek Bieńczyk, Piotr Szewc, Igor Ostachowicz, Mariusz Sieniewicz and Piotr Paziński. Analysis contains four categories which structure both the world represented and the form of the prose: transgression, pop-culture, history and metonymy.
