Tematem artykułu jest sytuacja kursów języka i literatury polskiej na uniwersytetach w Ameryce Połnocnej. Zmniejszająca się liczba studentów zainteresowanych zajęciami z kultury polskiej, będąca wynikiem wielu czynników, prowadzi do ograniczania kursów. Sytuacji nie pomaga łączenie wydziałów slawistycznych z germanistycznymi. W ostatnich latach wzrasta natomiast zainteresowanie tematyką polsko-żydowską, co może pomóc w rozwinięciu np. lektoratów językowych nie tylko jako kursów skierowanych do odbiorców poszukujących tożsamościowych wartości języka, ale także polszczyzny jako języka świadectw Zagłady Żydów.
This article discusses the current situation of courses in Polish language and literature at North American universities. Diminishing interest in Polish culture, caused by a variety of factors, has resulted in limited offerings of courses on this subject. The common fusion of Slavic and German Departments in North America does not help to reverse this trend. In current years, however, there has been a growing interest in Polish-Jewish themes. This, in turn, might lead to a renewed interest in Polish courses; for instance, the Polish language can be taught not simply with heritage students in mind but also as an important language for reading Holocaust testimonies.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań, które zostały przeprowadzone w 2017 r. Ich celem było określenie pozycji języka polskiego jako przedmiotu wśród uczniów szkół podstawowych i średnich. Wyniki badań nie zaskakują, ale też budzą duży niepokój brakiem zainteresowania uczniów językiem i literaturą ojczystą. Uczniowie nie uznają języka polskiego za przedmiot ważny i rozwijający ich osobowość. Niska świadomość treści przedmiotowych każe zastanowić się, czy rzeczywiście uznają potrzebę ich poznawania i przywiązują do nich wagę. Może to dziwić tym bardziej, że język polski jest przedmiotem maturalnym. Możliwości pozytywnych zmian przeciwdziałających istniejącej sytuacji autorka upatruje w szeroko zakrojonych i kompleksowych badaniach uczniów, ich rozwoju, potrzeb i zainteresowań. Wyniki tych badań powinny stanowić podstawę wszelkich zmian i reform.
The article presents results of the research conducted in 2017. It aimed at estimating how important for students of primary and secondary schools are Polish language lessons, in comparison to other subjects. The results are not surprising, however, they evoke a serious concern, since the students present lack of interest in their native language and literature. They do not perceive Polish language classes as important, nor do they reckon that these classes have any impact on their personal development. Poor knowledge of the material discussed in class raises a question if students feel that they should learn it at all, or how important it is to them. It may surprise even more, since the Polish language is also one of the subjects at the Matura exam. The author sees a chance to positively counteract the current situation in broad and comprehensive researches concerning the students, their development, needs and interests. The results of such research should be treated as a base for all the changes and reforms.

The article entitled Self-study in Polish language teaching in view of challenges related to school reform and the opinions of eighth graders concerns the issue of self-education and the issues that emerged after the school reform introduced in September 2017. Particular attention was paid to the difficulties faced by teachers in the field of theoretical and practical preparation of students for the process of independent learning. The following were analysed in detail: a) the areas (both general and specific) noted in the compulsory educational documents; b) survey statements from 126 eighth grade students. The assumption was made that respondents have for a year followed the guidelines of The new general education curriculum for primary school, while they will, in June 2019, be the first graduates (taking the eighth-grade examination) of an eight-year primary school. The material acquired allows an assessment of the state of self education in Polish language teaching a year after the introduction of educational reform.

Artykuł jest poświęcony konfrontacji wczesnych prac Z. Klemensiewicza (głównie Składnia opisowa współczesnej polszczyzny kulturalnej, 1937) i N. Chomskiego (głównie Syntactic Structures, 1957). Autorzy tych dzieł wywodzą się z różnych nurtów lingwistycznych – pierwszy z lingwistyki strukturalnej, drugi z lingwistyki generatywnej. Mimo to w ich ideach da się zauważyć istotne zbieżności. Chociaż nie ma podstaw, by uważać dzieła Klemensiewicza za bezpośrednią inspirację dla Chomskiego, wygląda jednak na całkiem uzasadnione twierdzenie, że różne szkoły myśli lingwistycznej nieraz były dosłownie o krok od zapoczątkowania paradygmatu generatywnego.
The article focuses on the early works of Z. Klemensiewicz (mostly Składnia opisowa współczesnej polszczyzny kulturalnej, 1937), and N. Chomsky (mainly Syntactic Structures, 1957). These authors come from different linguistic paradigms: structural linguistics, and generative linguistics, respectively. Despite that, their ideas have strong similarities, and although there is no reason to consider Klemensiewicz’s work as a direct inspiration for Chomsky, it seems quite reasonable to argue that different schools of linguistic thought were at times literally one step away from pioneering the generative paradigm.

This article presents two publications in the area of Polish stylistics, which are considered representative of this field of study and embracing the latest developmental tendencies: Przewodnik po stylistyce polskiej [A Guide to Polish Stylistics, 1995, ed. Stanisław Gajda], and Przewodnik po stylistyce polskiej. Style współczesnej polszczyzny [A Guide to Polish Stylistics. Styles in the Contemporary Polish Language, 2013, ed. Ewa Malinowska, Jolanta Nocoń and Urszula Żydek-Bednarczuk]. This works shows the development and the specific features of the Polish language stylistic research, as well as the most important qualities of the aforementioned publications. In the final part of their article, the Authors make an attempt to shed light on the phenomena, problems and directions presented in both publications in the perspective of the German language linguistics studies.
Dwa polonistyczne ‚cicerone‘ po stylistyce polskiej: Kilka uwag z perspektywy germanistycznej Artykuł przedstawia dwie publikacje z zakresu stylistyki polonistycznej, uznane za reprezentatywne dla tej dziedziny i prezentujące jej najważniejsze tendencje rozwojowe: Przewodnik po stylistyce polskiej (1995, red. Stanisław Gajda) i Przewodnik po stylistyce polskiej. Style współczesnej polszczyzny (2013, red. Ewa Malinowska, Jolanta Nocoń / Urszula Żydek-Bednarczuk). Praca ukazuje rozwój oraz specyfikę polonistycznych badań nad stylem, zaprezentowano także najważniejsze cechy charakterystyczne wymienionych publikacji. W ostatniej części tekstu autorki podejmują próbę naświetlenia z perspektywy germanistycznej zjawisk, problemów oraz kierunków rozwoju dyscypliny dyskutowanych w artykułach obu tomów.

The author pays particular attention to the description of the situation of the Polish community in Kazakhstan, where the teaching of the Polish language is concentrated. Moreover, she presents partial results of her study of the motivations for learning Polish among inhabitants of Kazakhstan. The paper is an attempt at presenting all Kazakh centres where the Polish language is taught and outlining the prospect for the development of Polish in this country.

One of the most important initiatives serving the purpose of popularising the Polish language worldwide is the Meetings of Polish Studies in Three Countries: China, Korea, Japan (SPTK). The actions taken by specialists in Polish studies coming from East Asian countries position the teaching of Polish as a foreign language in a new sociopolitical context. Polish studies function at prestigious higher education institutions of the region, the signifi cance of which increases as a result of the changes occurring in the contemporary international relations. Polish glottodidactics becomes one of the “tools” in the public diplomacy efforts made by the Polish government at various levels using various means. The cooperation and integration of Asian specialists in Polish studies raises the global prestige of the Polish language and develops polonophony.

Contemporary Contrastive Studies of Polish, Bulgarian and Russian Neologisms versus Language CorporaIn the field of Slavonic linguistics contrastive studies of neologisms occupy little place, the newest words are insufficiently described and classified. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the need for contrastive description of the newest lexis and checking exclusively one of many possibilities of obtaining Polish, Bulgarian and Russian neologisms. Language corpora, as this possibility is in question, are not the only source from which the author obtains her research material, yet a growing interest in corpora has inspired her to also use this method. The author wants to show the reader to what degree language corpora can help in building the thesaurus of Polish, Bulgarian and Russian neologisms. Making an attempt to confront a collection of neologisms of contemporary Polish, Bulgarian and Russian language, the author points out the need to standardize the description (identical for each of the analysed languages), which she intends to propose in another publications on neologisms in Polish, Bulgarian and Russian language. The application of contrastive method to three different but related languages from the Slavonic group will help, in her opinion, to discover more mechanisms of new words coming into existence and examine the newest derivative processes and their productivity.

Mental and emotional verbs in semantic and syntactic descriptionThe main issue of this article concerns relations between the semantic plane of the sentence, which is presented by means of notions of predicate argument structure, and the plane of formal realisation of this structure. The existing attitudes to the studied verb classes are presented. Then rules governing the model of description used are specified (the article has been written within an elaborate scientific grant concerning Bulgarian, Polish and Russian). Obligatory semantic features of both classes are pointed out, followed by an elaboration on the scope of analysis of semantic and syntactic phenomena. This scope is determined by basic semantic sentence categories on which comparative, including contrastive, research is based. Drawing on examples of particular units studied, I then discuss the effectiveness of the analysis which enables comparing differences between sets of sentence structures allowable for each class studied. Those differences stem from semantic differences typical of those classes. Czasowniki mentalne i czasowniki emocji w opisie semantyczno-syntaktycznymTematyka artykułu dotyczy relacji między płaszczyzną semantyczną zdania, ujętą w terminach struktury predykatowo-argumentowej, a płaszczyzną realizacji formalnej tej struktury. Zarysowane zostały dotychczasowe podejścia do opisu badanych klas czasowników oraz sprecyzowano ustalenia dotyczące zastosowanego w artykule modelu opisu (artykuł powstał w związku z realizacją obszernego grantu dotyczącego języka bułgarskiego, polskiego i rosyjskiego). Wskazano obligatoryjne dla obu klas cechy semantyczne oraz scharakteryzowano zakres analizy zjawisk semantyczno-składniowych. Zakres ten wyznaczają podstawowe semantyczne kategorie zdaniowe, których badanie stanowi podstawę dla porównań, także porównań konfrontatywnych. Zaprezentowane zostały przykłady opracowania wybranych jednostek oraz wskazana skuteczność analizy, która pozwala ukazać różnice między zbiorami dopuszczalnych dla każdej z badanych klas struktur zdaniowych. Różnice te wynikają z charakteryzujących te klasy różnic semantycznych.

Professor Tadeusz Skulina (1929–1992) was born in Katowice but from the Second World War he was connected with Great Poland. Also in Poznań, he studied Polish Studies and following his graduation became employed at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań where he completed the consecutive stages of his scholarly career. As a disciple of Professor Władysław Kuraszkiewicz he conducted research on the Polish language of the Old-Polish era and of the 16th century. His doctoral thesis (1964) was devoted to historical phonetics and historical dialectology but soon he changed his scholarly interests and entered the field of Slavic studies, especially East-Slavic languages. In his habilitation thesis he discussed the question of the Old-Ruthenian anthroponymy. This thesis, published in 1973, was the first original, so extensive and detailed thesis about the Old-Ruthenian names. As we know, in the period following the receipt of his habilitation degree Professor Tadeusz Skulina had plans to prepare a monograph about Polish feminine onomastics. He had pursued this for years, however, unfortunately, never managed to prepare a synthesis. He only left an unfinished editorial draft of this book. Apart from research activities, Professor Skulina was involved in didactics and also performed responsible administrative functions at the Institute of Polish Philology, was a member of numerous scholarly societies. For his achievements, he received many awards and honours. Professor Tadeusz Skulina died in 1992 after a long and emaciating illness. The scholarly achievements he has left inspire the successive generations of researchers. He also left unfinished written works and ideas which he never managed to realize.

Autor porusza kilka aspektów ukraińskich polonistyk: problemy definicyjne – którą formę kształcenia języka polskiego można uznać za polonistykę, obecność ukraińskich polonistyk w polonistycznym życiu naukowym w Polsce i w świecie, poziom kształcenia językowego, kształcenie praktyczne przyszłych nauczycieli, koordynację działań poszczególnych ośrodków polonistycznych. Została też zaprezentowana koncepcja integracji polonistyk ze szkolnictwem polskim na Ukrainie. Koordynacja ta powinna przebiegać w pionie (uniwersytety/polonistyki/lektoraty – centra metodyczne/metodycy – szkoły/nauczyciele/uczniowie) oraz poziomie (polonistyki/lektoraty w danym kraju). Tezą artykułu jest, że całość powinna być skorelowana z polskim i ukraińskim systemem szkolnictwa. W końcowej części autor przedstawia sugestie działań poprawiających funkcjonowania polonistyk.
The author discusses several aspects of Polish studies in Ukraine: problems of definition – which form of the education can be considered Polish studies, presence of Ukrainian Polish studies in the academic life in Poland and in the world, the quality of language education, practical training of the future teachers, coordination of the activities of various Polish centres. The article also presents the concept of the integration of Polish studies with Polish education in Ukraine. The thesis of the paper is that Polish language and cultural education should be correlated with the Polish and Ukrainian education systems and closely linked to the unified testing of student achievement. In the final part of the article the author discusses suggestions of actions to improve the functioning of Polish studies.
