Otto and Reich families are distant ancestors of the author. They were evangelical peasant families living on the Polish lands (near Huta Dłutowska) from about 1800. Later they moved from Huta Dłutowska to the neighboring villages: Kolonia Anielin and Rokicie. Members of the Otto family were farmers, cultivating farmlands under a leasehold law (Polish „okupnicy”), and carpenters. On the other hand, members of the Reich family worked in mills in Jochim (Joachin), Kozica, Półtalarek. Members of both families were married to evangelical German settlers. The marriage of Marianna Otto was, however, an exception. She was married to Maciej Rutkowski in 1828. Their children were brought up as Catholics.

The article revolves around the history of upbringing in Poland as a science discipline. The first historical-pedagogical works appeared in the Renaissance and were continued in Age of Enlightenment. However, it was not until the-19th century when a discipline called ‘history of upbringing’ was created. Its development, by East European standards, took place in difficult social and political circumstances. Poland, at that time annexed by Russia, Prussia and Austria, did not enjoy conditions conducive to scientific development. The annexation was counterbalanced by actions instigated by cultural, educational and scientific institutions. As a result, historical science could develop despite the political situation and the financial shortcomings. Introduction of pedagogy and history of upbringing at the Krakow and Lvov Universities was important to the development of the history of upbringing. Antoni Karbownik’s post-doctoral degree in the history of upbringing obtained in 1905 from the Jagiellonian University and post-doctoral degrees in pedagogy (also the Jagiellonian University) awarded to Leon Kulczyński, Euzebiusz Czerkawski, Aleksander Skórski, Antoni Danysz and Bolesław Mańkowski (Lvov University) were breakthroughs in the history of upbringing. For the areas of study to become disciplines of science, they had to be defined, including their research object and the methodological basis. Władysław Seredyński Franciszek Majchrowicz, Antoni Karbowiak and Antoni Danysz adopted a position on the subject. In the late 19th and the early 20th centuries the history of upbringing was perceived as a discipline of science related to history with respect to the ,methodology and with pedagogy with respect to the content, with its own research, terminology, sources and academic teachers. The history of education was officially a part of culture. In this context, educational matters should be viewed.

W ostatniej dekadzie pojawiły się opracowania poświęcone sytuacji ludności żydowskiej w czasie Wielkiej Wojny i pierwszych latach po jej zakończeniu, względnie prace, których autorzy w mniejszym lub większym stopniu uwzględniają ten okres. W przeciwieństwie do dawniejszej historiografii, gdzie zajmowano się przede wszystkim relacjami politycznymi, dyplomatycznymi, stosunkami gospodarczymi czy „zderzeniem” Żydów niemieckich z Ostjuden, tak w polskiej, jak w obcej historiografii pojawiły się publikacje związane z życiem kulturalno-oświatowym, opieką społeczną, działalnością charytatywną czy stosunkami polsko-żydowskimi. Coraz większe zainteresowanie wzbudzają też zajścia antysemickie i pogromy, których widownią stały się ziemie polskie jesienią 1918 roku, w pierwszych miesiącach Polski niepodległej i w czasie wojny polsko-bolszewickiej.
In the last decade we have witnessed the appearance of articles on the situation of the Jewish population during the Great War and its aftermath; some authors had also ta- ken this period into consideration in their books. The older historiography dealt primarily with political, diplomatic and economic relations or ‘clash’ between the German Jews and Ostjuden. Both in Polish as in a foreign historiography appeared publications related to the cultural life, charity or education as well as the Polish-Jewish relations. In the last years more and more attention is drawn to the anti-Semitic incidents and pogroms in autumn of 1918, during the first months of independence, and throughout the Polish-Bolshevik war.

This study is an invitation to reflect on issues that fall within the area of collective memory, an area that awaits further in-depth analysis. More specifically, this article is a proposal of a broader study on cultural landscape and places of memory than that which is dominant in the sociological literature. In particular, I examine the relationship between the inhabitants of the Polish “Western Lands” and the material German heritage of the cities in which they happen to live. I mainly focus on the relation between socially constructed memory and greenery—a “negligible” part of the space of human life. As I demonstrate in the article, the “green” narrations about Wrocław created after World War II are lasting and are still present in the stories of city’s inhabitants today.

Despite recent research on home-based education and teaching of children in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, the subject of home and private tutors has yet not been properly addressed. Though there are more or less extensive mentions on the subject in question in articles devoted to home tutors or home tutelage, they do not, however, delve deeper into the investigation of the problem. Therefore, the present work attempts to characterize this position of appointed, or hired, teachers who were involved in the process of education of children in Polish families in time of partitions. The main problem is approached from the two following perspectives – the aim of the article is to: 1) indicate more precisely the status of private tutors, their social background, goals to be attained by them, their duties, responsibilities and conditions of work, i.e. a determination of their real participation in the education of children from Polish families during the time under scrutiny; and also 2) to show the contemporary standpoint expressed by the then educational columnists and journalists on the very idea of private tutoring and private tutors, as well as their postulates, recommendations to be followed and advice concerning hired teaching staff. The source material for the present analysis of the capacity and function of private tutors has been provided by relevant educational literature for professionals and parents written in the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, professional educational periodicals and women’s and family magazines of the time. The source materials provide an excellent base for a determination of the extent and the scope of the interest of the contemporary columnists and journalists in this group of private tutors and private tutelage at the time, but also present the attitude towards the phenomenon manifested by the general public. The analysis is supplemented with additional material excerpted from contemporary memoirs and diaries that serve here as a useful illustration of the reality and practice in the actual teaching process of appointed tutors in the times of national freedom struggle in Poland.

The German troops’ large-scale retreat on the Eastern Front was accompanied by a substantial population outflow from the occupied regions of the USSR. The German Mennonites (approx. 35,000 people) preferred to obey the occupiers’ order and evacuate to the west in the autumn of 1943. Several thousands of them were transported in echelons directly to Warthegau and the region of Danzig. The remaining part of deportees had to sustain a difficult and dramatic route in the convoys. The Nazi leadership planned to use them as settlers or labour force on the annexed Western Polish lands. After the end of the Second World War, most of the Mennonites were forcibly repatriated to the USSR; others succeeded in emigrating to Canada or Latin America.

Zanim Polska odzyskała w 1918 r. niepodległość ważną rolę w rozwoju rodzimych i upowszechnianiu międzynarodowych koncepcji edukacyjnych oraz w projektowaniu rozwiązań dotyczących przyszłego w kraju ustroju szkolnictwa odegrały czasopisma pedagogiczne ukazujące się w okresie pierwszej wojny światowej pod szyldem organizacji nauczycielskich. Należały do nich: „Szkoła”, „Muzeum”, „Ruch Pedagogiczny”, „Wychowanie w Domu i Szkole”, „Przegląd Pedagogiczny”, „Szkoła Polska”, „Miesięcznik Pedagogiczny”.
Before Poland regained independence in 1918, a great role in the development of domestic educational concepts and propagation of international ones, as well as in designing solutions concerning the future school system, was played by pedagogical journals published during the Great War by teachers’ organizations. They included: “Szkoła” (School), “Muzeum” (Museum), “Ruch Pedagogiczny” (The Pedagogical Movement), “Wychowanie w Domu i Szkole” (Education at Home and at School), “Przegląd Pedagogiczny” (Pedagogical Review), “Szkoła Polska” (Polish School), “Miesięcznik Pedagogiczny” (Pedagogical Monthly).

Opis:
In the 1800s forest management in Polish forests was still in its infancy. This article reminds presents tree stands were described in those days. The then concepts of: the forest, tree stand, bare land and large tree group were explained. In addition, the notion as well as the method of determination of the stand species composition and its age, perpendicular structure, closure, mixture proportion, stocking and condition was discussed in detail. For this purpose, available nineteenth century instructions, glossaries and books were employed.

The article describes contacts between academic societies operating in the lands of partitioned Poland. Its purpose is to present the current status of research on this very wide topic and to indicate the need for research that arises in this respect. A comprehensive view of these contacts shows that the topic has not been acknowledged to-date. Therefore, it has not been properly reflected in the professional literature. Where the topic has been recognized by authors, it has often not been properly interpreted. The most frequent mistake that has been made by researchers is perceiving the issue from an exclusively ethnic angle, which – particularly in respect of the lands of partitioned Poland – is related to the conflicts arising in such conditions. Seen against the background of the contacts between the various academic institutions operating in the three partitions, it is clearly visible how complicated the matter was and how different factors played a role in forming and discontinuing relationships.

W 2018 r. Główny Urząd Statystyczny, wydawca roczników statystycznych, obchodził setną rocznicę powstania. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono zawartość książki będącej bezpośrednim poprzednikiem roczników statystycznych – wydanej w 1915 r. Statystyki Polski autorstwa Adama Krzyżanowskiego i Kazimierza Władysława Kumanieckiego, wybitnych statystyków i ekonomistów polskich. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja sytuacji demograficznej na ziemiach polskich w przededniu wybuchu I wojny światowej, co zapoczątkowuje analizę procesu odzyskania niepodległości prowadzoną przez pryzmat sytuacji demograficznej i społeczno-gospodarczej kraju. Przedstawiono liczbę ludności zamieszkującej poszczególne dzielnice ziem polskich ok. 1910 r., szacunki dotyczące liczby ludności polskiej na tych ziemiach oraz dane o skali emigracji i ruchu naturalnego ludności historycznych ziem polskich. Informacje te stanowią przyczynek do poznania historii odrodzenia niepodległości Polski oraz historii statystyki polskiej.
n 2018, Statistics Poland, the publisher of statistical yearbooks celebrated its 100th anniversary. The purpose of this work is to present a book which is the immediate predecessor of the Polish statistical yearbooks. The work, published in 1915, entitled ”Polish Statistics”, was elaborated by Adam Krzyżanowski and Kazimierz Władysław Kumaniecki, eminent Polish statisticians and economists. Based on this work, we can reconstruct the demographic picture of the Polish lands before the outbreak of the First World War, which initiates the analysis of the process of independence restoration through demographic and socio-economic situation of the country. The number of population on historical Polish lands around the year 1910 is shown. At the same time, the estimates of the number of Polish population on these lands with the information on the scale of emigration and vital statistics is presented. Such information contributes to the knowledge of the history of the rebirth of Polish independence and the history of statistics.
