Opis:
In Poland, hydrogeology as a separate scientific discipline came into being at the end of the 19th century. The first geologists were interested in springs, saline, mineralised waters of therapeutic use and dewatering of mines. Until World War I, in the early stages of hydrogeological developments, a different attitude towards groundwater problems was clearly notable in all three annexed Polish territories. The next stage of the development of Polish hydrogeology is dated to the years 1918-1939. In those times, the major focus of hydrogeological investigations was on building structures to extract artesian groundwater; mineral groundwater in the Polish spas; building municipal water intakes; and on Quaternary aquifers, widespread in Poland. Early hydrogeological handbooks were published at those times. The contemporary stage of Polish hydrogeology started in 1945, after World War II. In the early 1950s, the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology was established at the Central Board of Geology (CUG in Polish), which belonged to the Polish government as a separate ministry up to 1970. Hydrogeological companies with technology and development sections were founded in big cities. Nowadays, academic centres exist in Warsaw, Cracow, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Sosnowiec, Poznań, Kielce and Toruń. About 1400 persons with academic diplomas, 160 doctors and 22 professors of hydrogeology are active at present in the field of hydrogeology. The principal fields of Polish hydrogeology comprise the following: mine dewatering, recognition of groundwater resources and their protection, construction and exploitation of water intakes, hydrogeological cartography, mineral and thermal water resources, regional hydrogeology for physical planning, groundwater modelling and groundwater pollution, migration of pollutants and forecasting of groundwater changes. Up to the late eighties, political censorship was the main difficulty for the development of Polish hydrogeology, especially in publications related to sensitive information of groundwater occurrence and resources.

Opis:
Professor Zdzislaw Pazdro (1903–1987) is regarded as the creator of the Polish school of hydrogeology. He was born in Lviv. In times of dramatic rebirth of the Polish state, he participated, as a 15-year-old boy, in the defense of Lviv in 1918, and was a volunteer in the Polish-Soviet War in 1920. In 1925, Zdzis³aw Pazdro graduated from the University of Lviv as a geologist and, as an employee of the University, conducted research work on stratigraphy and tectonics of the Carpathians. Over time, his interests turned to economic geology; he participated in the exploration of the Bug Coal Basin in and the prospecting for bituminous minerals. During World War II (1939–1945), he acted in conspiracy in the structures of the Polish Underground State. He was imprisoned by the Gestapo, and then, after the capture of Lviv by the Soviet Army, by the NKVD. He was released as a high-class geologist at the request of the Polish communist authorities. After the war, he organized the first hydrogeological and geological-engineering studies in Poland (Gdañsk University of Technology, in 1952), was the author of the first, highly acclaimed textbook "Hydrogeologia ogólna" (1964), long-standing chairman of the Commission for Hydrogeological Documentations at the Central Geological Office, teacher of several generations of Polish hydrogeologists, and author of regional hydrogeological syntheses and hydrogeochemical reports.

Opis:
The Polish hydrogeology had started its development at the end of the 19th century, before Poland was liberated. The needs for country restoration after the world war and for ensuring water supply for communities and industry required construction of many water intakes and water reservoirs. On the other hand, the development of ore deposits, e.g. hard coal seams, needed dewatering of mines and quarries. The Polish pioneer hydrogeologist was R. Rosłoński (1880-1956). He organized the Hydrology Department at the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) in 1919. After World War II, the Hydrogeology and Engineering Department was established at the Geological Institute in Warsaw. Dozent F. Rutkowski was the head of the unit for more than 10 years. Professors C. Kolago, J. Malinowski, A. Różkowski and B. Paczyński introduced in practice a number of hydrogeological studies, including hydrogeological cartography, groundwater resource balances, recognition of groundwater resources of well fields and hydrogeological units of Poland, mining hydrogeology, and the principles of groundwater protection in Poland. Hydrogeological data banks were also first introduced at the PGI. The last 20 years of hydrogeology at the PGI were strongly connected with Poland's accession to the European Union and with the implementation of European directives to the water management system in practice. For this reason, the state hydrogeological survey has been established at the PGI.

Opis:
The Polish Geological Institute has been carrying out the tasks of the geological survey since its establishment in 1919. Hydrogeology was present from the very beginning and the groundwater monitoring became the systematic activity in the 2nd fifty years of the Institute’s life. Groundwater quantity monitoring expressed as measurements of groundwater table fluctuations was put into practice in 1972, while the groundwater quality monitoring that includes determination of chemical composition of water started in 1991. Both types of monitoring cover the entire area of Poland. Systematic hydrogeological observations and tests are one of the most important tasks carried out by hydrogeologists of the Polish Geological Institute. Results of these observations are used for many studies, analyses and forecasts carried out as part of the tasks of the hydrogeological survey, often in cooperation with universities and geological enterprises, for the needs of governmental and local administration and for reporting to the EU structures.

Opis:
Artykuł obejmuje krótkie biografie trzech wybitnych polskich geologów, naukowców, podróżników i patriotów z rodziny Zuberów – Rudolfa, Stanisława i Andrzeja, czyli ojca, syna i wnuka.
The paper contains short biographies of three prominent Polish geologists, scientists, travellers and patriots of the Zuber family – Rudolf, Stanisław and Andrzej, father, son and grandson. Main occupation of Rudolf was exploration of oil deposits. His experience was of high value for many oil companies and countries that made their development dependent on the oil industry. On his scientific journeys he reached every inhabited part of the world, excluding Australia. In Krynica, he discovered a unique water that is among the strongest alkaline acidic waters in Europe. He is also the author of a fundamental publication, titled Flysh and crude oil which was an important and classical geological work of those times. His son, Stanislaw Zuber, started his professional career from participation in oil exploration in the Baku (Azerbaijan) and East Caucasus regions. His exploratory work in Albania resulted in the discovery of the main oil fields in this country – Kuçova–Lushnja, Murriz–Pekisht and Patos–Cakran–Selenica. He is presently regarded as the father of modern geology of Albania. Andrzej Zuber, son of Kazimierz, Stanislaw’s brother and grandson of Rudolf was also involved in several activities abroad (Kenya, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, India). His main interests were connected with investigations of the environmental logograms of the common, mineral and thermal waters. Among different hydrogeological problems, he put special attention to determination of the genesis and recharge areas of the Krynica mineral waters. It could be considered as the continuation of his grandfather’s work.

Opis:
The Polish Geological Institute (PGI) was established in 1919 according to the act of the Polish Parliament. Four departments made up the structure of PGI at that time, and one of them was Department of Hydrology. The first head of this Department was Prof. Dr. Romuald Rosłoński, also the professor of the Lwów Technical University. He is recognized as a founder of the Polish hydrogeological school. The term hydrogeology was used in the Polish literature 120 years ago, but has slowly been implemented in science as a separate research field. In the period of time between the First and Second World War the PGI team of hydrogeologists dealt with groundwater resources and water supply, hydrogeological cartography, groundwater geochemistry and hydraulic properties of rocks hosting aquifers and aquitards, and water balances of drainage basins. Hydrogeology at that time was closely connected with regional geology, tectonics and petrology on the one hand and with mining activity and civil engineering on the other hand. After the World War II in 1949, the Section of Hydrogeology was established as a part of the Geological Institute. In 1953 this was renamed the Department of Hydrogeology, with the authorization for scientific activity. The scope of this activity encompassed regional hydrogeological recognition, cartography, hydrogeology of ore deposits and mining, geophysical logging in hydrogeology and drilling diagnosis. Mathematical modeling of groundwater flow started in this Department with the physical, analog simulation in the late 60s. of the 20th century. Results of the regional investigation of groundwater occurrences and geochemistry were presented in many hydrogeological maps prepared under the guidance of Professor C. Kolago. Groundwater resources were estimated both in the regions and the whole country by the team led by Professor B. Paczyński as a head and an editor. The brines, mineralized and thermal groundwaters were identified by this Department in close cooperation with branches of the PGI under direction of B. Paczyński, Z. Płochniewski and J. Dowgiałło from the Polish Academy of Sciences. The alteration and rise of the hydrogeological studies in the PGI took place at the beginning of 2000 due to the twin projects resulted from Poland’s accession to the European Union. There was little time for the EU directives implementation, especially for Water framework directive (FWD) and integrated water resources management to be introduced in practice. To meet these needs, the state hydrogeological survey (SHS) was organized in the PGI. This survey has been established according to Water Law Act from July 18 of 2001. The SHS imposed new duties resulting from the EU Groundwater Directive (2006/118/EU) on the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration (Official Journal UE, L 372 from 27.12.2006). There are legal, organizational and research tasks within the monitoring network and water management planning projects, which projects that belong to duties of the SHS. The main tasks of this survey include: groundwater monitoring organization and control and quality and geochemistry control of groundwater resources within groundwater bodies, gathering of hydrogeological data in data banks, analysis of current data and forecast elaboration, documentation of groundwater resources, publication of maps, guidebooks etc. This is the current activity of the hydrogeological team of the Polish Geological Institute.

During the first century of the Polish Geological Society (PGS), many prominent hydrogeologists have worked, and are still working, who have made a huge contribution to the development of hydrogeology in Poland. The results of their research and scientific activity at universities and various scientific institutes gave the basis for the origin and development of modern hydrogeology. It is impossible to list all hydrogeologists who deservedly contributed to PGS, so only the founding members of the Hydrogeological Section of the PGS and Honorary Members of the PGS are briefly presented. If any meritorious figure for hydrogeology during the first century of the PGS is omitted in such an approach, it is not the author's intention.
