This article is devoted to selected aspects of digital humanities in Poland, especially academic communication and linguistic metalanguage. Considerations in this respect have so far focused primarily on topics related to the use of digital tools in humanities research rather than those concerning the ontological status of this research field. This paper presents the impact of issues associated with digital humanities on language and communication space. The study focuses on how linguistic and communicative reality changes in contact with what is classified as digital humanities. The discussion considers word-formation, lexical and semantic phenomena in linguistic terminology, using material from the iSybislaw digital bibliography and other sources.
Artykuł poświęcony jest wybranym aspektom humanistyki cyfrowej w Polsce w perspektywie komunikacji naukowej i metajęzyka językoznawstwa. Ma charakter wprowadzający, dlatego też zarysowane w nim tematy, różnorodne, lecz związane wspólnym słowem kluczowym, jakim jest językoznawstwo, mają na celu wskazanie możliwości badawczych, które stoją przed badaczami lingwistami. Dotychczasowe rozważania na temat humanistyki cyfrowej w Polsce koncentrują się głównie na kwestiach związanych z wykorzystywaniem i użytecznością narzędzi cyfrowych w badaniach humanistycznych, znacznie rzadziej dotyczą statusu ontologicznego tego pola badawczego. W niniejszym artykule przybliżam kwestię oddziaływania zagadnień łączonych z humanistyką cyfrową zwłaszcza na polską przestrzeń językową. Uwzględniam zjawiska słowotwórcze, leksykalne, semantyczne na gruncie słownictwa specjalistycznego (terminologii szeroko rozumianego językoznawstwa), wykorzystując także materiał z bibliografii cyfrowej iSybislaw.

W związku z dokonującym się zwrotem ku Ziemi w nauce i edukacji, trwającymi Klimatycznymi Strajkami Młodzieżowymi, a przede wszystkim fatalnymi prognozami dotyczącymi przyszłości, artykuł jest próbą wprowadzenia do praktyki szkolnej transdyscyplinowego nurtu – humanistyki ekologicznej. Autorka zaaplikowała do edukacji polonistycznej nowe treści, dzięki którym uczeń może podjąć głęboki namysł nad odpowiedzialnością za Ziemię. Próbując odpowiedzieć na ekologiczne wyzwanie, autorka zrekontekstualizowała również szkolne lektury dawne, zwracając uwagę na nowe relacje człowieka ze środowiskiem. Podstawę zmian mentalnościowo-edukacyjnych stanowi zaprojektowane i opisane seminarium licencjackie, włączające studentów polonistyki w odpowiedzialne ekokształcenie.
In regard to the turn towards Earth in science and education, the ongoing Climate Youth Strikes and catastrophic forecasts for the future, the article is an attempt to introduce into school practice the trans-disciplinary trend called ecological humanities. The author of the article endeavored not only to apply new content to Polish language education - thanks to which it will be possible for students to reflect on their responsibility for the Earth - but also to recontextualize old texts by drawing attention to the relationship between man and environment. The basis for the mentality and educational changes is a designed bachelor’s seminar, which involves students in the responsible eco-education.

The research on workers’ culture carried out in Poland from the 1960s to the late 1980s has been recognised in this article as a failure. The author discusses the numerous attempts to conceptualise research programmes and their actual implementation in the fields of sociology, anthropology and the emerging cultural studies. She looks for the sources of their failure, reflecting on its nature and possible causes. She asks whether the failure of the research on workers’ culture was not due to the scepticism of the researchers themselves, who might have overlooked important attempts at demonstrating self-awareness and pro-active attitude on the part of the workers, treating them as politically manipulated and therefore inauthentic. She raises the question about both ideological and methodological reasons behind this stance, the latter having to do with a clash between quantitative research and humanistic orientation. She calls for “preposterous” research (as proposed by Mieke Bal) to be undertaken, which would give a different interpretation of the workers’ various cultural initiatives from today’s perspective. Perhaps this would inspire the creation of a counter-history of workers’ culture.
Badania kultury robotniczej w Polsce od lat sześćdziesiątych do późnych osiemdziesiątych XX wieku diagnozowane są w tym artykule jako porażka. Autorka przypomina liczne próby konceptualizacji programów badawczych i konkretne ich realizacje w obszarze socjologii, antropologii i rodzącego się wówczas kulturoznawstwa. Szuka źródeł tej porażki, zastanawia się, na czym ona polegała i co mogło być jej przyczyną. Stawia pytanie: czy niepowodzenia badań nad kulturą robotniczą nie wynikały ze sceptycyzmu samych badaczy, którzy mogli przeoczyć ważne próby manifestacji samoświadomości i aktywnego uczestnictwa robotników, traktując je jako sterowane politycznie, a więc nieautentyczne. Pyta o przyczyny zarówno ideologiczne, jak i metodologiczne – ścieranie się badań ilościowych z orientacją humanistyczną. Proponuje, aby z dystansu czasowego podjąć badania preposteryjne, pozwalające dziś inaczej odczytywać różne robotnicze inicjatywy kulturalne. Być może byłoby to inspirujące dla budowania przeciw-historii kultury robotniczej.

The paper is a review of the book Rozrachunki z wojną by Sławomir Buryła (Warszawa, Instytut Badań Literackich PAN 2017), which is devoted to the problems of literary representation of war in specific sociocultural contexts. Buryła reflects on Polish literature and pays special attention to the question: what does literature know about war and why? In addition, he diagnoses zones of silence and neglect as serious deficits within Polish war studies, particularly in the field of literary studies. The review contains a reconstruction and analysis of the argumentation provided in Rozrachunki z wojną as a contribution to such difficult and embarrassing topics as war, violence, genocide and “time of contempt”.

With the Great Charter of Universities as a point of departure, the author discusses the four tasks of the university: (1) search for the truth (2) education which supplies students them with the latest scientific knowledge and the skills that knowledge justifies (3) student formation in the spirit of tolerance, pluralism and openness to dialogue, (4) popularizing scientific knowledge. For their accomplishment to be unconstrained (by ideological, religious, xenophobic or economic limitations), as well as effective and ethical, the university must be free and autonomous. Nowadays humanities and social sciences are particularly exposed to factors that damage or hinder this autonomy and freedom, which is regrettably the case especially in countries that declare attachment to democratic values, yet trample them at the same time. The author is very critical of the state’s policy of evaluating scholarly activities of universities based on converting scientific output into points. According to the author, this produces a greatly simplified and distorted picture of their achievements. What is more, it also encourages certain academics (for whom „survival” at a given institute or department is at stake) to engage in unethical behaviour: plagiarism of other people’s works, falsification of empirical research results, fabrication of findings, guest authorship, ghost authorship. One of the major solutions aimed to counter such unethical practices is to depart from bibliometric evaluation (via IF, H index) in favour of peer review. It is also necessary to implement new publishing practices, which would require replication of empirical studies, access to raw results provided by authors, as well as preregistration assessment of research projects so as to take works in which positive results were not obtained (thus failing to bear out the initial hypothesis) into consideration as well.

Celem tekstu jest ukazanie kwestii związanych ze środowiskiem jako ważnego obszaru leksykalnego oraz prześledzenie sposobu jego realizacji we współczesnych podręcznikach z perspektywy podejścia zadaniowego. Zakłada ono nastawienie na celowe działanie o charakterze społecznym tak, aby prowadzić uczących się do uruchomienia pewnych procesów poznawczych oraz do rozwiązania danego problemu. W dalszej części artykułu na podstawie badań ankietowych przeanalizowano stosunek nauczycieli oraz uczących się do treści proekologicznych na zajęciach z języka polskiego jako obcego. W tekście przywołano badania z zakresu humanistyki ekologicznej i psychologii społecznej w kontekście procesu glottodydaktycznego.
Climate change, increasing environmental awareness of societies across the world, and emphasising climate-related issues in the public discourse are phenomena that have contributed to changes in the content of textbooks used in teaching Polish as a foreign language. These are the main reasons for which this article was written. The aim of the text is to present environmental aspects as an important lexical area and to trace the way in which it is featured in contemporary textbooks from the point of view of the task-based approach. It assumes a focus on deliberate action of a social nature undertaken to induce the activation of certain cognitive processes in learners and to lead them to solving the specific problem they face.Further on in the article, teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards pro-environmental content in Polish as a foreign language classes were analysed on the basis of survey research. The text cites studies in the field of environmental humanities and social psychology in the context of the glottodidactic process.

The article discusses Marek Zaleski’s monograph Intensywność i rzeczy pokrewne [Intensity and other related matters] (Warsaw 2022). The reviewed book reads like a crossover between a strictly academic text and an essay. In a number of different essays, Zaleski insightfully analyzes the category of intensity and related notions of collective and individual memory. Discussing the problems of contemporary Polish prose, the scholar draws on the findings of the new humanities.

This article addresses the latest stage of transformations in Polish scientific discourse, the origins of which are commonly traced back to the 16th century in relation to Polish culture. The paper provides a synthetic and report-like overview, offering several key insights regarding the examined area of communication: 1. Changes in the discourse in contemporary humanities, influenced by the intellectual aura of postmodernism, pertain to certain areas of scientific reflection. 2. Science reflects the transformations in cultural and social nature, thus scientific discourse absorbs the characteristics of the world it describes. 3. Revaluations within scientific discourse serve as a certain signal of its denormalisation, although this process does not encompass the entirety of scientific communication but rather signifies cracks and shifts that emerge in the proposed and normative understanding of discourse. 4. Transformations within scientific discourse should not be regarded as a crisis, but rather as manifestations of certain qualities and general tendencies in culture that may bring new and surprising effects in the future. 5. The transformations of scientific discourse are also influenced by the field in which it operates. The specific nature of humanities sciences, situated in a particular way in relation to other branches of knowledge, should be taken into account. 6. Despite changes in the scope of scientific discourse, many of its characteristics remain relevant. 7. Scientific discourse should not be regarded as monolithic; on the contrary, it is a complex, multidimensional quality dependent on various aspects. 8. The specificity of scientific discourse as one of the areas of communication becomes more graspable when examined from a certain distance. Therefore, a historical perspective on the issue proves fortunate for the proposed conclusions.

Artykuł omawia na wybranych przykładach z historii Koła Polonistów Studentów KUL model i główne typy aktywności koła studenckiego. Odwołując się do tradycji tego typu organizacji, jej struktury i form działania, autor pokazuje, jak ważna i wielostronna jest funkcja dobrze działającego koła naukowego na uniwersytecie, a zwłaszcza koła polonistycznego, które często pełni rolę integrującą różne wydziały uczelni i promuje całe jej środowisko. Dobrze funkcjonująca Alma Mater staje się ostatecznie miejscem spotkania dwóch świateł: jednego płynącego z góry, ex cathedra, od mistrzów i nauczycieli akademickich oraz drugiego, którego źródłem jest aktywna i często zrzeszona w koła naukowe brać studencka.
The article discusses, on selected examples from the history of the Polish Philology Student Research Group at the Catholic University of Lublin, the model and the main activities of a student research group. The author refers to the tradition of this kind of association and describes its structure and activities in order to show the importance and the multifarious function of a well-working student research group at the university. The text emphasizes the significance of the presence of a Polish Philology student research group which usually contributes to the promotion of the entire milieu of the university by integrating its different faculties. A well functioning Alma Mater eventually becomes the place of encounter of the light emanating from two sources: from above, ex cathedra, from the masters and professors, and from below, from the students active in their research groups. Pandemiczna rzeczywistość panuje na całym globie już od blisko dwóch lat. Wpływa ona na wszystkie obszary działalności człowieka, jego kondycję fizyczną i psychiczną. Rozmaite przejawy tej nowej rzeczywistości skłaniają do refleksji naukowej, w tym też do zastanowienia się nad różnie rozumianą „nowością” w (glotto)dydaktyce polonistycznej. O tak ukierunkowaną refleksję poproszono badaczki i badaczy z polskich i zagranicznych ośrodków akademickich. Zgromadzone teksty tematycznie oscylują wokół dwu „nowości”, które stają się już – jak można sądzić – codziennością w środowisku (glotto)dydaktycznym. Jednym z nowych trendów jest obecność nurtu humanistyki ekologicznej w podręcznikach do nauczania polszczyzny – zarówno jako mowy ojczystej, jak i jako języka obcego. Ten nowy, kształtujący się od lat 90. ubiegłego wieku paradygmat naukowy, wyznaczył narzędzia analizowania treści podręcznikowych i wpłynął na perspektywę oglądu funkcji, jakie powinny realizować podręczniki językowe w zakresie uwrażliwienia uczących się na problemy ekologiczne. Za drugą „nowość”, będącą tematem przewodnim kilku artykułów zamieszczonych w tym numerze, uznano kształcenie zdalne, które obecnie przestaje już być traktowane jako forma nadzwyczajna bądź zarezerwowana dla szczególnych typów kursów. Nagła konieczność szerokiego zastosowania narzędzi cyfrowych, znanych przecież w dydaktyce od lat, wpłynęła na działania i postawy zarówno nauczycieli, jak i uczniów. Artykuły pomieszczone w niniejszym numerze zostały podzielone na trzy tematyczne sekcje. Znajduje się w nim też część Varia oraz Sprawozdanie.
The pandemic reality has prevailed around the globe for nearly two years now. It has affected all areas of human activity, as well as people’s physical and psychological condition. Various manifestations of this new reality encourage scientific reflection, including reflection on “novelty”, understood in different ways, in Polish (glotto)didactics. Researchers from Polish and foreign academic centres were asked to reflect on this topic. The texts collected here revolve around two “novelties”, which have already become, it seems, a part of everyday life in the (glotto)didactic milieu. One of the recent trends involves is the presence of environmental humanities (green studies) as a trend in textbooks for teaching Polish, both as a native language and as a foreign language. This new scientific paradigm, forming since the 1990s, has determined the tools for analysing textbook content and influenced the view on the functions that language textbooks should perform in making learners sensitive to environmental issues. The other “novelty”, which is the main theme of several papers published in this issue, is distance learning, which I ceasing to be considered extraordinary or reserved for specific types of courses. The sudden need for widespread use of digital tools, which in fact have already been known in teaching for many years, has affected the actions and attitudes of both teachers and students. The papers included in this issue are divided into three thematic sections. A Miscellany section and a Report are also included.

Opis:
The article critically examines the history and recent developments of the Polish memory studies. The authors trace the genealogies of this intellectual field, starting with categories formed by Stefan Czarnowski, Marceli Handelsman, Kazimierz Kelles-Krauss, Ludwik Krzywicki, Florian Znaniecki, and Nina Assorodbraj-Kula. Then, they describe reformulations and varied methodological application of memory concepts within Polish historical studies, cultural studies, as well as within qualitative and quantitative sociology. They also summarize main research themes and projects conducted up to date. Finally, they point out to some flaws within the field having to do with its institutional weakness and the selective reception of western intellectual traditions.

W artykule omawiamy wzór na nowy polski wskaźnik bibliometryczny, tj. Polski Współczynnik Wpływu, z perspektywy nauk humanistycznych. Badaniom poddaliśmy dwa prestiżowe polskie czasopisma humanistyczne („Pamiętnik Literacki” i  „Diametros – An Online Journal of Philosophy”), aby sprawdzić poprawność założeń przyjętych dla Polskiego Współczynnika Wpływu. Przeanalizowaliśmy wszystkie artykuły opublikowane w latach 2004–2014 (odpowiednio: N = 850, N = 555) i wszystkie prace w nich zacytowane (odpowiednio: N = 21 805, N = 8 298). W interpretacji wyników przyjęliśmy założenie o odmiennej kulturze cytowań w różnych grupach nauk. Wyniki pokazują, że wzór na Polski Współczynnik Wpływu nie bierze pod uwagę najczęściej cytowanych źródeł w humanistyce, tj. książek i rozdziałów. Poza tym wiele cytowań nie zostanie uwzględnionych przy wyliczaniu Polskiego Współczynnika Wpływu ze względu na ich wiek, ponieważ będą brane pod uwagę prace co najwyżej pięcioletnie lub nowsze. Zbadaliśmy wiek cytowanych tekstów i pokazaliśmy, że większość z cytowań jest starsza niż 5 lat (odpowiednio: 84,2% oraz 73,2%). Nasza analiza pokazuje, że Polski Współczynnik Wpływu nie jest odpowiednim narzędziem do bibliometrycznej oceny czasopism humanistycznych w Polsce. Artykuł kończy dyskusja nad możliwościami ulepszenia tego nowego wskaźnika bibliometrycznego.
The article discusses the formula for a new Polish bibliometric indicator, i.e., the Polish Impact Factor (Polski Współczynnik Wpływu) from the point of view of the humanities. Our study examines two prestigious Polish humanities journals (Pamiętnik Literacki and Diametros – An Online Journal of Philosophy) to evaluate the underlying assumptions of the Polish Impact Factor. We have analyzed all articles published from 2004 to 2014 (N = 850, N = 555, respectively) and all references included in these articles (N = 21,805, N = 8,298, respectively). When interpreting the findings, we have assumed that different groups of sciences are characterized by different citation cultures. Our findings show that the formula for the Polish Impact Factor does not take into account the most cited sources in the humanities, i.e., books and chapters. Moreover, many citations will not be included in the formula because of the citation age: the formula for the Polish Impact Factor is provided for the citations whose age is not higher than 5 years. We have analyzed the citation age of all citations and used Price’s Index to interpret the result. We have found out that most of citations are older than 5 years (84,2 percent and 73,2 percent, respectively). Our analysis shows that the Polish Impact Factor is not an adequate tool for a bibliometric evaluation of the journals in the humanities in Poland. The article concludes with a discussion of how the Polish Impact Factor could be improved.

Taking into account the tasks that foreign students at Polish universities face, the author attempts to discuss those language characteristics that are common for various domains in the humanities and which make Polish for humanities particular. She draws attention to the properties of the language in academic and popular science texts (objectivism, intellectualism, or depersonalization) and discusses the linguistic means used for their creation. She points out the linguistic aspects which foreigners who intend to study in Poland should get familiarized with. She also discusses the sources of texts used for working with the students who attend professional language courses, ranging from academic textbooks (for the most advanced) to the media and online texts and textbooks for foreigners.
Autorka, biorąc pod uwagę zadania, przed jakimi stają studenci obcokrajowcy studiujący na polskich uniwersytetach, podejmuje próbę omówienia wspólnych dla różnych nauk humanistycznych właściwości językowych, decydujących o specyfice humanistycznej odmiany języka polskiego. Zwraca uwagę na cechy języka humanistycznych tekstów akademickich oraz popularnonaukowych (obiektywizm, intelektualizm czy depersonalizacja) i omawia środki językowe, za pomocą których się je tworzy. Wskazuje na zagadnienia językowe, z jakimi powinni zapoznać się cudzoziemcy zamierzający studiować w Polsce. Wskazuje też źródła tekstów do pracy ze słuchaczami kursów języka specjalistycznego – od podręczników akademickich (dla najbardziej zaawansowanych), poprzez teksty prasowe i internetowe, do podręczników dla cudzoziemców.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja zasobów Polonijnej Biblioteki Cyfrowej oraz ukazanie jej znaczenia w sieci bibliotek cyfrowych w Polsce. Powstanie PBC jest wynikiem rewolucji w nauce jaką niesie z sobą rozwój ICT. Dzięki projektowi Polonijnej Biblioteki Cyfrowej badacze z całego świata mają dostęp do unikatowych zbiorów dokumentujących działalność polskiej diaspory. W zasobach Biblioteki znajduje się głównie XX-wieczna prasa społeczności polskiej z Ameryki Południowej jednak można w niej znaleźć dokumenty z każdego zakątka świata. Wiele materiałów ma charakter unikatowy i dostępne są jedynie poprzez PBC.
