The subject of this article is a manuscript belonging to the Lithuanian-Polish-Belarussian Tatars, the chamaił (a Tatar prayer book), currently in the custody of a Lithuanian state institution. Its watermarks indicate that it was created in 1896. Modern scholars have very limited access to manuscripts kept in private hands. For this reason they have been the least researched so far. This may be the case of the writings of the Lithuanian-Polish-Belarussian Tatars. For this reason the subject of this article may be regarded as part of a private collection, too. The author of the article performs a textual and philological analysis of the said manuscript, describes its content and graphical and orthographical characteristics.
Przedmiotem analizy jest rękopis Tatarów polsko-litewsko-białoruskich, który można określić mianem chamaiłu (tatarski modlitewnik). Zabytek, którego powstanie na podstawie znaków wodnych datowane jest na 1896 rok, przechowywany jest w jednej z instytucji państwowych Republiki Litwy. Współcześnie najtrudniej dostępnymi dla badaczy, a co za tym idzie najmniej zbadanymi i opracowanymi, pozostają zabytki znajdujące się w kolekcjach prywatnych, w których mogą znajdować się rękopisy Tatarów polsko-litewsko-białoruskich. Analizowany w artykule kodeks również można potraktować jako część kolekcji prywatnej, gdyż dostęp do niego jest ograniczony. Celem artykułu jest analiza filologiczno-tekstologiczna wspomnianego rękopisu, omówienie jego treści oraz właściwości graficzno-ortograficznych.

Статья посвящена истории экземпляра Грамматики Мелетия Смотрицкого 1619 г., хранящегося в Библиотеке Вильнюсского университета (шифр  хранения – Rk 337). Несмотря на то, что информация об этом экземпляре была опубликована в 1908 г., некоторые его особенности остались без внимания. Целью нового исследования является раскрытие с помощью комплексного книговедческого анализа материальных особенностей Грамматики Смотрицкого, с указанием признаков, которыми она была наделена до выхода в свет, и признаков, которые появились на вильнюсском университетском экземпляре после издания (переплет, утраты и реставрации, провениенции и маргиналии). Среди бывших владельцев экземпляра выявлены три частных лица из духовного сословия и несколько учреждений. Раскрытые факты использования Грамматики выводят к более широкому кругу вопросов, связанных с рецепцией научного наследия Смотрицкого в среде Ордена василиан Великого Княжества Литовского и Речи Посполитой. Выводы исследования могут быть полезны для нескольких исторических направлений, среди которых можно указать исследования книжной культуры XVII–XVIII в., а также текстологию литургических текстов греко-католической Церкви.
There is a copy of Meletius Smotrytsky Grammar, published in 1619 in Yev’ye (Vievis), which is kept in the Library of Vilnius university (the shelf number – Rk 337) nowadays. Despite the fact that the main information about this copy was published in 1908, some of its features were overlooked. The aim of the research is to reveal, by using methods of bibliographical analysis, all the material features of the copy of Smotrytsky Grammar before its release (the structure of the book, types, ornaments) and after it was published (bookbinding, damages and restorations, provenances and annotations). During the research several owners of this copy were identified – three clergymen (priest Grzegorz Sanocki, student of Vilnius Pontifical Seminary Procopius Hucewicz, and Basilian Samuel Nowicki) and several institutions. Procopius Hucewicz and Samuel Nowicki belonged to the Greek Catholic Church of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The newly established facts related to the use of Smotrytsky‘s Grammar by monks offer a basis for further research on the reception and impact of Smotrytsky’s scholarly legacy among the Basilians of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The findings of the study may be valuable for several historical directions; among those of note are studies of the book culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the textual scholarship of the liturgical texts of the Greek Catholic Church.

Using the example of two books by Eustachy Kossakowski (1925–2001) – August Zamoyski (1974) and Lumières de Chartres (1989) – the text addresses the issue of reproducing works of art in the form of a photo album (photobook). The work of the photographer who makes reproductions of works of art is compared to the task of the translator, a reference to Walter Benjamin’s essay. The text is divided into two parts corresponding to albums. A detailed analysis allows us to see the differences between the books, as well as the change in Kossakowski’s approach to reproduced works of art. The first album consists of black-and-white photographs depicting in an original way the works of the prominent Polish sculptor August Zamoyski. Kossakowski recontextualizes individual objects photographed in the artist’s French studio. In the second book, the photographer publishes color photographs of the titular “lights of Chartres.” Taken inside the early Gothic cathedral, the photos move away from the documentation of the object, and the weight shifts to a near-abstract record of the artist’s emotions. Published alongside Anne Prache’s scholarly study, engravings and documentation of the edifice, Kossakovsky’s photographs constitute an original monograph of Chartres Cathedral. In the author’s view, Kossakowski’s photobooks go beyond the framework of a typical album of reproductions offering the mass public a substitute for contact with art. The photographer creates autonomous objects by translating the reproduced work of art into an object that fosters an aesthetic experience and becomes art itself. Kossakowski’s approach is juxtaposed with Mieke Bal’s reading of Benjamin’s text. While the album dedicated to Zamoyski seems to be based on unconventional documentation, in which the procedure of recontextualizing objects plays a dominant role, the Chartres monograph approaches the “ecstatic aesthetic” proposed by Bal. Lumières de Chartres provides a different perspective on the reproduction album, which, in addition to basic information and illustrative reproductions, is a carrier of emotions, a record of experiences and a medium of art. An analysis of the author’s publications, which include reproductions of August Zamoyski’s sculptures and documentation of Chartres Cathedral, emphasizes their autonomous and artistic character. Kossakowski observes and interprets Zamoyski’s work by looking at it from a distance. But in Chartres, we observe how he lets himself be captivated by the cathedral. The transformation of the cathedral into sensual light completely absorbs its subject - the metamorphosis of Zamoyski’s sculptures does not. Photography is not art, nor is it reproduction. It is only in the process of interpreting an object by looking at it with a camera to the eye that the artistry of translating a work of art into the format of a photograph and, further, a photo album is revealed. The photobook as a work of art is the true task of the photographer.

Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz swoim testamentem sporządzonym w 1838 r. objął cenne po sobie pamiątki, w tym książki i rękopisy. Kasztelan życzył, by złożyć je w Bibliotece Polskiej w Paryżu, z którą był blisko związany. W artykule dokonano analizy przekazanych dokumentów (m.in. pod względem tematyki, języków czy ilości). Ponadto omówiony został proces przekazywania schedy, a także wynikające z tego problemy z uporządkowaniem spuścizny.
Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz included in his last will dated 1838 a valuable bequest that involved books and manuscripts. The castellan wished to have them donated to the Polish Library in Paris to which he was closely related. The article provides an analysis of the contributed documents (i.a., regarding their subject, language, and quantity). Moreover, the inheritance distribution process and the resulting issues concerning organisation of the legacy are discussed.

Zbiory Biblioteki Głównej Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie liczyły pod koniec 2019 r. ok. 456697 woluminów. Biblioteka w swoich zbiorach posiada głównie publikacje z dziedziny nauk teologicznych, filozoficznych, prawa kanonicznego i historii Kościoła, co wynika z faktu, że od 1954 do 1999 r. na uczelni kształcono studentów na kierunkach z zakresu nauk teologicznych, filozoficznych i historii Kościoła. Od 1999 r., po przekształceniu Akademii w Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego i powstaniu nowych kierunków, biblioteka rozpoczęła gromadzenie materiałów z innych dziedzin nauki, aby umożliwić kadrze naukowej i studentom dostęp do niezbędnych im pozycji. W zbiorach Biblioteki Głównej Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego znajduje się wiele cennych pozycji. Na księgozbiór, mający charakter ogólnouniwersytecki i multidyscyplinarny, składają się także kolekcje o szczególnych cechach. W artykule zostały opisane zbiory, które zdaniem autorów mają dużą wartość zarówno naukową, jak i są cenne z punktu widzenia polskich i zagranicznych dóbr kultury. Artykuł stanowi próbę usystematyzowania wiedzy o przechowywanych i udostępnianych w Uniwersytecie Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego kolekcjach specjalnych, które mogą zostać w przyszłości gruntownie opracowane naukowo.
At the end of 2019, the collections of the Main Library of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw amount to approximately 456,697 volumes. The library’s collections include publications of theology, philosophy, canon law and history of the Church, which is due to the fact that from 1954 to 1999 the Academy of Catholic Theology educated students in the fields of theology, philosophy and history of the Church. However, since 1999, after the Academy was transformed into the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University and new faculties were created, the Library began collecting materials from other fields to enable academic staff and students to access literature from their disciplines. There are many valuable items in the collections of the Main Library. This collection, which is general university and multidisciplinary in nature, contains, however, certain collections that can be easily distinguished due to their special features. The article describes collections which, according to the authors, have high scientific value and are valuable from the point of view of Polish and foreign cultural goods. This article is an attempt to systematize the knowledge about special collections stored and made available at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, which may be thoroughly researched in the future.

Autor wnioskuje na temat obecność polskich autorów w bibliotekach renesansowej Anglii na podstawie poświadczonej własności egzemplarzy ich publikacji w ponad trzystu inwentarzach prywatnych bibliotek angielskich z czasów Tudorów i pierwszych Stuartów. Dotychczas w nielicznej literaturze naukowej wnioskowano z zachowanych egzemplarzy książek polskich autorów obecnie znajdujących się w bibliotekach angielskich. Pytanie jaki wpływ wywarły książki polskich autorów na umysły Anglików w czasach renesansu, musi pozostać na tym etapie badań bez pełnej odpowiedzi. Występują w bibliotekach angielskich najważniejsze książki polskich autorów wydane po łacinie, ale udowodnienie ich realnego wpływu wymaga dalszych badań nad inwentarzami księgozbiorów z XVI-XVII w.
The author assumes the presence of books by Polish authors in the libraries of Renaissance England on the basis of certified ownership of copies of their publications in over three hundred inventories of private English libraries from the times of the Tudors and the first Stuarts. So far, in a small number of scientific publications, conclusions have been drawn from preserved copies of books by Polish authors currently held in English libraries. The question of what influence the books of Polish authors had on the minds of the English during the Renaissance must remain at this stage of research without a full answer. There were the most important books of Polish authors published in Latin in English libraries, but proving their real impact requires further research on the 16th-17th century book collections.

Kolekcjoner i bibliograf Władysław Trębicki (1806-1861) w rodzinnym majątku Linowo (dawny powiat prużański, obecnie Białoruś) gromadził rękopisy i druki, skupiając się na polonikach i materiałach dotyczących historii i literatury polskiej. W archiwach i bibliotekach Wilna i Krakowa zachowały się listy Trębickiego do Adama Zawadzkiego, Adama Benedykta Jochera, Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego i innych. Korespondencja pozwala ustalić tytuły kupowanych lub wymienianych książek i czasopism, czas, kiedy bibliofil poważnie zainteresował się naukowymi pracami z zakresu historii, literatury i bibliografii oraz uzupełniać informacje bibliograficzne dotyczące dawnych poloników. Wielotysięczna biblioteka w Linowie stała się warsztatem pracy bibliografa. Z dawnej kolekcji Władysława Trębickiego zachowało się około 2 tys. tomów starych druków i książek XIX w. Fragment ten obecnie znajduje się w depozycie Książnicy Zamojskiej im. Stanisława Kostki Zamoyskiego w Zamościu jako część Księgozbioru Klemensowskiego Rodziny Zamoyskich.
Collector and bibliographer Władysław Trębicki (1806-1861) in the family estate Linowo (the former Pruzany district, now Belarus) collected manuscripts and prints, focusing on polonic’s and materials about Polish history and literature. In the archives and libraries of Vilnius and Krakow, Trębicki’s letters to Adam Zawadzki, Adam Benedykt Jocher, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and others have been preserved. Correspondence allows to determine the titles of purchased or exchanged books and magazines, a time when a bibliophile became seriously interested in scientific works on history, literature, bibliography and also suplement bibliographic information about old polonic’s. The library in Linowo with many thousand book’s has become a bibliographer’s workplace. About 2,000 items have been preserved from the former collection of Władysław Trębicki - volumes of old prints and books of the XIX century. This fragment is currently in the deposit of Książnica Zamojska im. Stanisław Kostka Zamoyski in Zamość as part of the Klemensowski Book Collection of the Zamoyski Family.

The article surveys the last twenty years of the presence of Polish literature in the Czech Republic. The study focuses on the types and genres of literary texts translated into Czech, the total number of translations published in the period under discussion, as well as typical publishing practices and the network of support offered by Polish cultural institutions. Furthermore, the article offers some insight into the publishing industry and book market in the Czech Republic. The author examines the position of translators from Polish in this industry and the extent of their influence on what is published and how. The quantitative analysis presented in the article sheds light on certain prevalent trends, such as the rising popularity of Polish non-fiction books and the unique status of Polish fantasy literature. Investigating these trends further, the author aims to answer the question of whether the relatively high number of books translated from Polish and currently available on the Czech market is indicative of an actual rise of general interest in Polish literature.

This paper aims to explore how Norwegian picturebooks published in Poland in the years 2008-2018 are presented in publishers' blurbs and adult readers' online reviews. The study is grounded in Scandinavian theory of literature mediation and it makes particular use of the concept of public epitexts. Drawing on research on contemporary Scandinavian picturebooks, the paper identifies the most frequently highlighted aspects of the works discussed in the analysed text corpus. Based on this, the author distinguishes between two strategies of book selection represented among the Polish publishers and attempts to map out an image of the Norwegian picturebooks in the Polish adult audience.

This is account of the first auction of rare magazines and newspapers organized at the Warsaw Academic Antiquarian Bookshop (Magazines and Newspapers) of the Publishing House Dom Książki in 1984. It offered over two thousand items, published in Poland and abroad, from the 18th until the 20th century.
Tekst poświęcony jest pierwszej aukcji czasopism, zorganizowanej i przeprowadzonej przez Warszawski Antykwariat Naukowy — Czasopisma Przedsiębiorstwa Państwowego „Dom Książki” w 1984 roku, na której wystawiono ponad dwa tysiące rzadkich i poszukiwanych tytułów prasowych polskich i obcych, wydawanych w okresie XVIII–XX wieku.

This article analyses music manuscript Mar. F 406, originally from the collection of St Mary’s church in the Main Town (Rechtstadt) of Gdańsk, now kept at the Gdańsk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The codex is a compilation of liturgical chants. This article offers the first analytical study of the source undertaken from the perspective of the history of art, with a discussion of the character and quality of the gouache and calligraphic ornaments. These decorations are presented in the wider context of illumination art in fifteenth-century Gdańsk. Stylistic and comparative analyses were supported by non-invasive XRF and IR examination. The physical characteristics of the volume, along with the results of parallel musicological studies (Piotr Ziółkowski and Kamil Watkowski), make it possible to present a new chronology of the manuscript’s compilation, distinguish the individual illuminators’ hands and obtain knowledge of the techniques and practice of the scriptorium in Gdańsk. The codex is thus shown to have received its present-day form in the mid-fifteenth century. It is partly an original work from that period (by two Gdańsk-based copyists), and partly a compilation of older fragments (from the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century). It was bound in Gdańsk by the elder Dragon Bookbinder (älterer Drachenbuchbinder). The first scribe-illuminator was a representative of the Gdańsk environment trained according to Bohemian models. The last three gatherings (VIII–X) remained blank until the early sixteenth century, when more chants were added by a team of copyists. The decoration in this section is the work of a single illuminator, who drew on old thirteenth-century models, as well as calligraphic patterns used in the decoration of incunabula. This section can be dated to the turn of the sixteenth century; the work of this illuminator has analogies in other Gdańsk books from the first quarter of the sixteenth century. The source constitutes a valuable example of a manuscript’s intense, long-term liturgical use. Its analysis demonstrates the need for a comprehensive study of the Gdańsk scriptorium in the second and third quarters of the fifteenth century (including illuminating and bookbinding techniques).
Przedmiotem analizy jest muzyczny manuskrypt Mar. F 406 z PAN Biblioteki Gdańskiej, z zasobu kościoła NMP na Głównym Mieście. Księga ta zawiera kompilację śpiewów liturgicznych. W przedkładanym studium po raz pierwszy została poddana analizie znawczej z pespektywy historii sztuki, z uwzględnieniem charakteru i jakości dekoracji gwaszowej i kaligraficznej a jej zdobienia zostały wpisane w szerszy kontekst produkcji gdańskiej w XV wieku. Przeprowadzone analizy styloznawcze i porównawcze zostały wsparte badaniami nieniszczącymi (XRF, IR). Biorąc pod uwagę cechy fizyczne księgi i zestawiając je z wynikami prowadzonych równolegle badań muzykologicznych (P. Ziółkowski, K. Watkowski) można przedstawić nowy obraz chronologii powstawania tego manuskryptu, rozróżnić ręce iluminatorowi, a także uzyskać wiedzę o praktykach warsztatowych w gdańskim skryptorium. Udało się wykazać, że kodeks w swej obecnej postaci powstał w połowie XV wieku: częściowo jest dziełem autorskim z tego okresu (dwóch gdańskich kopistów), częściowo – kompilacją starszych fragmentów (z przełomu XIV i XV oraz z 1. ćw. XV); oprawiono go w gdańskim warsztacie Iluminatora Smoka Starszego. Pierwszy kopista-dekorator to reprezentatywna osobowość środowiska gdańskiego, kształcona na wzorcach czeskich. Ostatnie trzy składki (VIII–X) pozostawały niezapisane do początku XVI stulecia, kiedy to zespół kopistów dopisał kolejne śpiewy; zdobienia w tej części są dziełem jednego dekoratora, który wykorzystywał stare XIII-wieczne wzorniki oraz schematy kaligrafii stosowane w dekoracji inkunabułów. Tę partię można datować na przełom XV i XVI wieku; twórczość iluminatora znajduje analogie w innych gdańskich księgach z 1. ćw. XVI w. Zabytek stanowi cenne egzemplum długiego, intensywnego użytkowania manuskryptów uzusie liturgicznym. W świetle jego jednostkowej analizy dezyderatem badawczym staje się nowe rozpoznanie gdańskiego skryptorium (w tym warsztatu iluminatorskiego i introligatorskiego) w 2–3. ćwierci XV wieku.

Prezentowana konferencja zorganizowana została przez Zespół ds. Inwentaryzacji Biblioteki Katedralnej w Gnieźnie przy Instytucie Historii Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu oraz Poznańskie Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk. W artykule sprawozdawczym zreferowano tematykę 17 wystąpień konferencyjnych (z zakresu różnorodnych aspektów książki dawnej; z umiarkowaną przewagą zagadnień tegumentologicznych). W podsumowaniu konferencję oceniono bardzo pozytywnie, doceniono bardzo równy i wysoki poziom wystąpień oraz sporą liczbę ośrodków naukowych (Kraków, Lublin, Mińsk, Poznań, Słupsk, Tel Awiw, Toruń, Warszawa) i prelegentów biorących udział w spotkaniu (choć żaden z referentów nie reprezentował instytutu stricte bibliologicznego). Konferencji towarzyszyła wystawa okolicznościowa prezentująca zbiory specjalne Biblioteki PTPN (oprac. Michał Bartoszak i Wojciech Graś), ukazująca, jak kształtował się zasób tej biblioteki przez pryzmat jej najznamienitszych donatorów. 
This year’s conference was organised by the Inventory Team of the Cathedral Library in Gniezno, attached to the Institute of History at Adam Mickiewicz University, and by the Poznań branch of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts. The seventeen conference papers presented in this reporting article cover a variety of the problems and issues raised during the conference, encompassing a number of diverse aspects of old and rare books; this year with a slightly higher proportion of papers on book production and binding techniques and tegumentology. The conference was highly appraised for its scientific aptitude, while much appreciation was given to the overall high level of presentations given by the participants and the sheer number of participants, though none of the them represented an academic centre that was strictly involved in research on the history and science of books as physical objects, representing different research centres in Poland and abroad (Kraków, Lublin, Mińsk, Poznań, Słupsk, Tel Awiw, Toruń and Warszawa). The conference was accompanied by an exhibition presenting the special collections of the library of the PSFA (prepared by Michał Bartoszak and Wojciech Graś) documenting the history of the expansion of the resources of this library in the contexts of the donations made by its most notable donators.

Artykuł jest poświęcony społeczno-kulturowym uwarunkowaniom wyborów literackich polskich nastolatków. Spontaniczne wybory książkowe są ukazane w kontekście sposobów czytania, które budują oczekiwania wobec satysfakcjonującej lektury, formy aktywności czytelniczej i charakter uczestnictwa w społecznym obiegu książki. Uwaga została skupiona na specyfice literackiego gustu i sposobów czytania zależnych od socjalizacji do czytania w miejscowości, z której pochodzą nastoletni czytelnicy. Opisano trzy sposoby czytania: wiejski, małomiasteczkowy oraz wielkomiejski. Artykuł powstał na podstawie analiz wyników trzech edycji ogólnopolskich badań (z 2003, 2010, 2013 r.), śledzących postawy czytelnicze piętnastoletnich uczniów kończących obowiązkowy etap edukacji.
The article is devoted to the socio-cultural determinants of the literary choices of Polish teenagers. Spontaneous book choices are shown in the context of reading methods, which build expectations for satisfying reading, forms of reading activity and the nature of participation in the social circulation of the book. Attention was focused on the specificity of literary tastes and ways of reading, dependent on socialization for reading in the town from which teenage readers come. Three ways of reading have been described: rural way, small-town way and big-city way. The article was based on the analysis of the results of three editions of nationwide surveys (from 2003, 2010, 2013) following the reading attitudes of fifteen-year-old students completing the compulsory education stage.
