Opis:
In the area of the Polish Basin five deep seismic sounding profiles, recorded during 1991–1997, were used to compare the structure of the crystalline and consolidated crusts with that of the sedimentary cover. Repeated reactivation of deep crustal fractures controlled the thickness distribution and development of faults in Palaeozoic andMesozoic sequences.NW–SE toWNW–ESE basin-parallel and transverse N–S to NE–SW striking fracture systems are evident. The former includes the isseyre–Tornquist Zone that marks the profound crustal boundary between the East European Craton and the typical Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ) crust that is characterized by a variably thick consolidated upper crustal layer, composed of Caledonian-deformed Early Palaeozoic and possibly Vendian sediments, and defines the NE boundary of the Permian and Mesozoic Mid-Polish Trough (MPT). Its northwestern TTZ segment was intermittently active throughout the whole geological history of the area. The SWboundary of the TESZ, marked by the Dolsk Fault across which the consolidated crustal layer is replaced by a crystalline Variscan upper crust, is only evident on profiles LT-7 and P4. The deformation front of the Variscan Externides is located some 100 km to the NE of the Dolsk Fault within the confines of the TESZ crust. On profiles TTZ-PL and P2, significant lateral changes in the thickness of the consolidated and crystalline crust of the Pomeranian, Kuiavian and Holy Cross Mts. segments of the MPT are noted that coincide with the transverse Bydgoszcz-Poznań-Toruń and Grójec fault zones. These crustal changes are associated with substantial changes in the composition and thickness of supracrustal sedimentary sequences and the degree of inversion of the MPT.

Opis:
Significant lateral variations of surface heat flow occur in the Polish Lowland area, ranging up to 30+/–10 mW/m2 across the transition from the East European Craton (EEC) and the northeastern part of the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ) to the accreted terranes in the south-west (Palaeozoic Platform) and up to 25 mW/m2 of change within the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ). Modelling of the crustal temperatures for the deep seismic profiles parallel to TESZ (P1, P5 and TTZ) and perpendicular to it (LT-7, P2, LT-2, P4, LT-4 and LT-5) shows evidence of extensive crustal-mantle warming (elevated mantle heat flow in the area between the Sudetes and the EEC). The EEC and the northern part of the TTZ have a much lower mantle heat contribution. Mantle heat flow variations are significant (approximately 20–40 mW/m2). Significant are also variations in thermal lithosphere thickness ranging from ca. 150–200 km in the craton and the northern part of the TTZ to 100–150 km (locally less than 100 km) in the accreted terranes to the south-west of the TTZ and in the central part of the TTZ. The TTZ is a thermally inhomogeneous zone. The thermal transition between the Palaeozoic Platform and the EEC is not a sharp one. Significant variations in the thickness of the thermal lithosphere do not follow major tectonic units of the crust.

Opis:
In lower Toarcian clay deposits (Ciechocinek Fm., VIII depositional sequence of the Lower Jurassic) from three boreholes from the Polish Basin, illite-dominated sedimentation representing the lower part of studied interval was interrupted by enhanced kaolinite input. Levels of high kaolinite/illite ratio at the VIIIb/VIIIc parasequence boundary suggest strong continental weathering in a humid-subtropical to tropical climate related to the phase of the early Toarcian global warming recorded at the top of the tenuicostatum Zone and correlated with isotope curves from a number of European sections. Kaolinite enrichment may be locally enhanced by reworking ofpre-Jurassic kaolinitic rocks and differential settling. Diagenetic processes were not sufficient enough to transform the initial kaolinite, but may have altered smectite and mixed-layers into illite and/or chlorite.

Nineteen samples of uppermost Triassic and Lower Jurassic claystones and mudstones, which were formed in the epicontinental Polish Basin, were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for rare earth elements (REE) and other selected trace elements (Sc, Y, Th, Zr and U). The results indicate that the source of most of the claystones and mudstones studied were sedimentary rocks of the upper continental crust of old cratonic areas, where the protolith had a mainly felsic character. However, in the latest Triassic a characteristic layer formed, implying significant input from mafic volcanic protolith. It was also found that moderately intense chemical weathering usually favoured increased concentration of the rare earths. Extremely strong hydrolysis, related to episodes of very hot and humid climate (greenhouse events), caused conspicuous impoverishment in REE in residual clays. Weathering and recycling processes modified the composition of REE to some extent, but generally did not obliterate the original characteristics of the protolith. In some samples, enrichment in rare earth elements was observed, caused by admixtures of accessory minerals (being a main carrier of REE) and/or increased sorting during recycling.

Hydrocarbon generation in the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic potential source rocks of the Polish Basin was investigated by 1-D thermal maturity modelling in 90 boreholes across the basin. This identified major zones potentially worthy of further exploration efforts. The maximum burial depth of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic reached >5 km during the Late Cretaceous leading to maximum thermal maturity of organic matter. Hydrocarbon generation development reveals considerable differences between particular zones of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic. The kerogen transformation ratio (TR) in the Zechstein Main Dolomite reached values approaching 100% along the basin axis. The TR in the Upper Triassic source rocks is generally lower than in the Zechstein Main Dolomite due to lesser burial. The Upper Triassic source rocks have the highest TR values (>50%) along the basin axis, in the area between boreholes Piła IG 1 and Piotrków Trybunalski IG 1, with the most pronounced zone in the Krośniewice Trough (i.e., between the Krośniewice IG 1 and Budziszewice IG 1 boreholes), where the TR reached >90%. The Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic entered the oil window in the Late Triassic to Early–Middle Jurassic, respectively. Hydrocarbon generation continued until the Late Cretaceous, and was completed during tectonic inversion of the basin.

Opis:
The Triassic-Jurassic boundary interval (ca. 201 Ma) was a time of sudden global environmental changes triggered by Pangea breakup and Central Atlantic Magmatic Province development. The bulk-rock mineralogy, clay mineralogy and major element geochemistry of 87 continental mudrock samples collected from four borehole cores yield information on Rhaetian-earliest Hettangian palaeoclimatic changes in the Polish Basin. During the Rhaetian, smectite preponderance was replaced by kaolinite and illite domination. This fundamental shift in clay mineral assemblages (supported by major element data) indicates very significant change in climate humidity. Moreover, some beds in the Zagaje Formation (Upper Rhaetian-Lower Hettangian) are particularly rich in kaolinite indicating extreme chemical weathering in humid-subtropical to tropical climate episodes in the aftermath of powerful warming and abundant rainfall. Importantly, the first distinct kaolinite enrichment appears already in the Lower Rhaetian Wielichowo Beds. In addition, abrupt and episodic shifts in the kaolinite-illite ratio and in values of weathering indices point to profound climate destabilisation and a sequence of frequent, catastrophic climatic reversals in the Late Rhaetian and at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary. These results are generally consistent with carbon isotope records in sections worldwide.

Numerical modelling of the Carboniferous–Permian petroleum system in the Polish Basin was carried out using PetroMod software. The Carboniferous source rocks contain organic matter mostly of a humic nature (gas-prone Type III kerogen). Subordinately, only in the Lower Carboniferous deposits, kerogen of algal marine origin and mixed Type II/III kerogen occur. The quantity of dispersed organic matter is variable, but usually below 2% TOC. In the Carboniferous section, a progressive increase in the maturity of organic matter with depth was observed, from approximately 0.5% Rr at the top of the Westphalian in marginal parts of the Carboniferous basin to over 5.0% Rr at the bottom of the Lower Carboniferous in the eastern Fore-Sudetic Homocline. The thermo- genic generation of hydrocarbons continued from the late Westphalian (eastern Fore-Sudetic Homocline and partly Pomerania) throughout the Mesozoic, up to the Late Cretaceous. The advancement of this process is va- riable in different parts of the Carboniferous basin, reaching up to 100% of kerogen transformation in the zones of maximum maturity of organic matter. However, the most intensive periods of gas generation and migration were the Late Triassic and the Late Jurassic. The most prospective areas are located NE of Poznań–Kalisz line and SW of Poznań.

Opis:
Wtedy to wartość powierzchniowego strumienia cieplnego w południowo-zachodniej Polsce istotnie zmalała, a wyraźne cechy termiczne poprzedniej epoki zostały zatarte.

Opis:
This paper presents a new sedimentological and palaeogeographic interpretation of the Early to Middle(?) Triassic continental deposits in the Wleń Graben and the Krzeszów Brachysyncline (Sudetes, SW Poland). These two tectonic subunits, located in the peripheral segments of the North Sudetic and Intra-Sudetic synclinoriums, respectively, represent the crucial elements for deciphering the post-Variscan palaeogeographic evolution of the NE termination of the Bohemian Massif. Sedimentological studies and facies analysis show that the Early Triassic siliciclastic deposition in both areas was dominated by fluvial sedimentation of the typical Buntsandstein facies within a gently sloping alluvial plain, locally followed by ephemeral lake environments in the late Early or Middle(?) Triassic. The lithofacies and the measured palaeocurrent directions indicate that the area was drained by braided streams flowing towards the northwest and north. Individual fluvial channels had depths not exceeding 1 m and widths of up to a few metres. Overbank deposits are poorly preserved due to the lateral shifting of channels. Based on available borehole data, an analysis of isopach maps was performed for the first time in the study areas. The study areas are presently separated by crystalline units devoid of sedimentary rocks, but the analysis indicate that they might have been in constant or periodical connection during the Triassic. It is concluded that the present-day extent of Triassic deposits is a result of the primary basin configuration combined with the Middle Triassic to Late Cretaceous erosion and post-Cretaceous tectonic uplift. The paper summarizes the present state of research on the continental Triassic preserved in the terminal parts of the North Sudetic and Intra-Sudetic synclinoriums, presents the first detailed sedimentological logs, and proposes new palaeogeographic interpretation. New findings include bioturbation structures, such as plant-root traces or tunnels formed by invertebrates and possible tetrapod footprints, which shed new light on the sedimentological interpretation of the continental Mesozoic deposits in the NE part of the Bohemian Massif.

From the beginning of geological investigations of the Polish Lowlands both the geological and the regional tectonic units were used simultaneously. The Szczecin-Gorzów Synclinorium should be distinguished in terms of tectono-structural rules. The Gorzów Block - as a geological unit - is defined on the basis of extent and differentiation of the Upper Cretaceous thickness or by distribution of local structures (mainly halotectonic and halokinetic ones) developed in the Zechstein-Mesozoic complex. Basement in the Gorzów Block area is uplifted in its consolidated part and also the top of Moho is elevated. Both uplifts are well correlated with the Permian-Mesozoic palaeogeothermal anomaly. The Gorzów Block incorporates also the north-western part of Wolsztyn Ridge which was active during the Permian-Mesozoic time. In the early Rotliegend time this area was characterized by volcanic activity. In the late Rotliegend it was a source for clastics deposited around the Wolsztyn Ridge. Also the carbonate platform facies of the Main Dolomite (Ca2) is associated with this uplifted area. The mentioned region is situated in the distal part of asymmetric, Polish rift basin. Development of basin analysis - as an interdisciplinary domain of the Earth Sciences - indicates the need of applying various geological units, adequate to the considering problem. Modern research methods in geology (computerization, GIS) enable the data bases creation for individual geological units necessary for study of their origin and evolution up to their present geological pattern.

Opis:
Presented paper is a contribution to discussion about the tectonic regionalization in Poland. The Polish Lowlands, located between the Baltic shore and the highlands of the southern and central Poland, is the area discussed here. In this region mainly the Quaternary and the Neogene deposits with thickness rarely over 300 m are exposed. On the sub-Cenozoic surface occur mainly Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic rocks. Structural forms of the Polish Lowlands are directly associated with the Permian-Mesozoic Polish Basin inverted at the beginning of Cenozoic time. It is worthwhile indicating here that not only the Polish Trough was inverted but also the distal part of this basin, distinguished now as the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. Subdivision of the Polish Lowlands into tectonic units on the sub-Cenozoic surface was shown on Fig. 1. In the mid-Polish area antyclinorium belts of north-west to south-east orientation are located. The basement of the Polish Basin is built of the pre-Permian deposits, tectonized during pre-Alpine phases. To analyze the geology of Poland in the sub-Permian architecture the proper tectonic map (Fig. 2) is required with only the units of first order marked. Debate on tectonics of Poland requires also a map of basement consolidation units (Fig. 3). Indispensable completion of the presented maps is a geological cross-section of the Polish Lowlands (Fig. 4). It is clear that tectonic regionalization of Poland (with special attention to the Polish Lowlands) should be demonstrated on the three basic maps here presented. Spatial (both horizontal and vertical) relations between tectonic units should be considered in the light of sedimentary basin analysis, i.e., searching processes and stages of the structural evolution which essentially contributed to the recent tectonic diversification in regional geology.

A highs ignifance of the Kutno 2 deep borehole is due to its location in the central zone of the Polish Basin where the Rotliegend complex has previously never been achieved by other drill holes and thus was not recognized and studied. Drill core from the Rotligend of the Kutno2 has been recently studied for its petrography and facies. The Rotligend in this zone is represented by fluvial and alluvial sediments. It is composed mainly of fine- to coarse-grained sandstones, with conglomerate inter beds. Diagenetic processes of the sediments have been dominated by mechanical and chemical compaction, as well as by transformation of the unstable mineral components. Fluid inclusion analysis for quartz and carbonates indicates that the diagenesis-associated temperature reached 120-180°C. The presence of haematite pseudomorphoses after framboidal pyrite indicates an extremely high palaeotemperature of approx. 500°C. Itis related here to the Jurassic hydrothermal event. The recent very high reservoir pressure might be associated with high temperatures due to the aqua thermal pressure mechanism.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of sedimentological studies of Zechstein marine deposits occurring in the Wleń Graben, a tectonic unit located in the southeastern part of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (NSS; Western Sudetes, SW Poland). Owing to poor exposure, small thickness, and lack of palaeontological data, the stratigraphy and age of these rocks were determined solely on the basis of analogies with adjacent areas. New findings described here, including faunal remains (remains of bivalves, including Liebea sp.), geopetal structures, clastic fills of halite crystals, moulds and bioturbation, shed new light on the environmental interpretations of the Zechstein in this part of the NSS. It should be assumed that at least two types of deposit may be assigned to the marine Zechstein in the Wleń Graben area, namely sparitic and microsparitic dolomite (PZ3) and the overlying deposits of the heterolithic series (PZt). These deposits were formed during the late Zechstein transgression, when the study area was in the marginal southwesternmost part of a newly formed shallow-marine bay of the Polish Zechstein Basin. In the central part of the present-day Wleń Graben, a shallow-marine bay (lagoon?) was dominated by carbonate sedimentation. A north-dipping mud plain, periodically flooded by a shallow sea, occurred in the southern part of the area. The paper summarises the present state of research on Permian deposits in the Wleń Graben, the first comprehensive lithostratigraphic scheme is suggested, and a new concept of the palaeogeographic evolution of the area in the Early and Late Permian is proposed.

Main Dolomite deposits of the Miedzychód region were deposited: a) on the carbonate platform (in the environments of the outer barrier, inner barrier and high- and low-energy platform flat); b) on the platform slope; c) at the toe-of-slope; d) on the basin floor. The best reservoir properties are recorded in shallow-marine deposits of the outer and inner barriers and in deep-sea sediments of the toe-of-slope (turbidites and debrites). Rich reserves of crude oil and natural gas were discovered both on the carbonate platform (the Miedzychód and Grotów deposits) and at its toe-of-slope (the Lubiatów deposit). The Main Dolomite sediments are wholly included in the second depositional sequence (PZS2 sensu Wagner & Peryt, 1997). The maximum flooding surface of the PZS2 sequence within the platform, its slope and toe-of-slope, runs along the A1g/Ca2 boundary. In the basinal zone, its correlative equivalent is a hard ground observed within the Main Dolomite carbonate rhythmites. The boundary between the second and third (PZS2/PZS3) depositional sequences (corresponding to the ZS3/ZS4 sequence boundary in the German Basin) runs on top of the Main Dolomite carbonates (on the platform slope, at the toe-of-slope and on the basin floor) and above top of the Main Dolomite carbonates, within the lower part of the Basal Anhydrite (on the platform).

Opis:
The Szamotuły Graben covers the southernmost part of the Permo-Mesozoic Poznań–Szamotuły Fault Zone. Along this regional discontinuity there are several salt structures, including the Szamotuły diapir, over which an extensional graben formed in the Paleogene and Neogene. The graben is located north of Poznań in central-western Poland, and is NW–SE-trending, ~20 km long, 3–5.5 km wide, and up to 160 m deep. It is filled with Lower Oligocene and Neogene sediments, including relatively thick lignite seams. Data from boreholes allow the assignment of the graben-fill sediments to appropriate lithostratigraphic units. Furthermore, analysis of changes in the thickness of these units provides evidence for periods of accelerated graben subsidence or uplift relative to its flanks. As a result, two distinct stages of tectonic subsidence and one inversion in the Paleogene–Neogene evolution of the Szamotuły Graben have been distinguished. Thus, relatively significant subsidence occurred in the Early Oligocene and the middle Early–earliest Mid-Miocene, while slight inversion took place in the middle part of the Mid-Miocene.

Opis:
The question of the eastern extent of the Variscan externides in the Polish Lowlands is a subject of ongoing scientific debate. The key to resolve this problem is to provide a good seismic image of the pre-Permian strata. Unfortunately, the industrial seismic profiling brings sparse information from below the Zechstein, thus in 2003, a special seismic experiment called GRUNDY 2003 has been organised. The acquisition system was based on the deep seismic sounding equipment and was targeted at the recognition of Palaeozoic strata. The results in form of the 3D tomographic velocity field and the migrated depth section form the basis for the geological interpretation. Deduced geological model suggests the existence of two different geological media below the Permian strata. The likely interpretation is that it is the contact zone of the Variscan externides with their foreland. Obtained results are of a great importance for the hydrocarbons exploration perspectives.

Opis:
After the cooling episode of the Late Pliensbachian, a major oceanic anoxic event occurred during the prominent warming event of the Early Toarcian (183 Myr; Early Jurassic). In this paper, new mineralogical and geochemical data (XRD, XRF, SEM, and TOC) measured on four cores from the Polish Basin are presented in order to document the regional impacts of these disturbances at a high sampling resolution. The results show that the clay mineral assemblages (<2 μm fraction) and vertical variations in kaolinite content are generally similar basin-wide and were controlled by the intensity of chemical weathering and climate changes. However, sea-level changes and variations in terrigenous supply are reflected in the bulk rock data. The spatial variability in clay mineral proportions may also be influenced by the distance from shoreline and the lithology of source areas. Generally, the clay minerals from the Polish Basin confirm the stepped nature of the Early Toarcian warming event. After a predominance of illite in the lower part of the Ciechocinek Fm., which suggests a temperate climate in the early tenuicostatum Zone, rises in kaolinite in the middle part of the Ciechocinek Fm. indicate a stronger weathering rate and high rainfall due to the onset of the warming event in the late tenuicostatum Zone. Importantly, the initial phase of climate change recorded by clay minerals seems to slightly precede the first step of the negative carbon isotope excursion ascribed to massive greenhouse gas releases.

Opis:
W artykule podsumowano wyniki ponad 220 badań dyfraktometrycznych, wykonanych we frakcji o śr mniejszej 0,002 mm triasowych i jurajskich kompleksów ilastych w basenie polskim. Odcinki profilu zubożone w kaolinit występowały w późnym pliensbachu, najwcześniejszym toarku oraz w bajosie i batonie, odpowiadając fazom klimatu chłodniejszego i mniej wilgotnego.
This paper summarizes over 220 results of XRD research carried out on <0.002 mm fraction of Triassic and Jurassic clay successions from the Polish Basin. SEM observations of some samples were also performed. The composition of detrital clay minerals of the Zbąszynek Beds (Norian), Wielichowo Beds (Lower–Middle Rhaetian), Zagaje Fm. (Upper Rhaetian and Lower Hettangian), Przysucha Ore bearing Fm. (Upper Hettangian), Ciechocinek Fm. (Lower Toarcian) and Częstochowa Ore-bearing Clay Fm. (Upper Bajocian and Bathonian) was controlled mostly by a weathering regime and, indirectly, by climatic conditions. Reworking and redeposition of ancient sediments (caused by tectonic processes and /or sea-level changes) and differential settling might have modified the mineral composition and partly erased the palaeoclimatic signal. A long-term evolution from arid or semi-arid to humid climatic conditions was confirmed by changes in the clay mineral composition of the <0.002 mm fraction. The major change of palaeoclimate took place during the Rhaetian. The Norian chlorite-illite association was replaced by the Early–Middle Rhaetian illite-smectite (and kaolinite-smectite) assemblage. Next, in the Late Rhaetian the illite-kaolinite association predominated. In the Jurassic, the chlorite-illite-kaolinite association was established due to a warm-temperate climate. Only changes in the kaolinite/illite ratio recorded the fluctuations in temperature and especially rainfall. Kaolinite-depleted intervals occurred in the Late Pliensbachian, Earliest Toarcian and Bajocian–Bathonian, due to cooler and less humid climatic phases. Minor cyclic variations in the clay mineral composition were most probably astronomically controlled, mainly due to the orbital eccentricity cycles. Some levels of the very high kaolinite/illite ratio in the Upper Rhaetian, at the beginning of Hettangian and in the Lower Toarcian suggest extreme chemical weathering in a humid-subtropical to tropical climate in the aftermath of a powerful greenhouse effect.

Polish Permian Basin

Opis:
The Polish Permian Basin (PPB) is a part of the Southern Permian Basin in theWestern and the Central Europe. Results of burial and thermal analyses as well as a configuration of the Moho surface of the Polish Basin suggest the asymmetrical basin model. History of the Polish Basin reveals that the Late Permian and the Early Triassic periods represent the main rifting phase and its later development resulted from thermal relaxation. During the Late Triassic and the Jurassic time some cooling of rift heat field took place, but the turning point in thermal evolution of the Polish Basin was at the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary when the south-western part of the Polish Basin was uplifted and intensively eroded. The knowledge on the Permian Basin in Poland is chiefly connected with petroleum exploration. The gas fields are located mainly in the Rotliegend reservoirs. The Zechstein deposits, overlying the Rotliegend, are also in the area of economic interest: hydrocarbons occurring in carbonate deposits of the Werra (Zechstein Limestone - Ca1 ) and Stassfurt (Main Dolomite - Ca2) cyclothems. Several tens gas fields have been hitherto discovered within the Rotliegend sandstones and the Zechstein limestones. Reservoirs are the clastic, terrestrial deposits of the Lower Permian and calcareous, biogenic carbonates of the Zechstein. Evaporates, mainly salts of the Werra cyclothem, are the regional sealing for the mentioned reservoirs. Natural gas accumulated in the Rotliegend sandstones and the Zechstein limestones is of the same origin: it was generated from organic matter occurred in the Carboniferous rocks and it migrated to higher places where it became concentrated within favourable structural or lithofacies conditions. High nitrogen content in the natural gas from the Polish Permian Basin is explained that nitrogen is generated from an organic matter within a sedimentary basin at higher temperatures than methane. Location of high helium concentration corresponds to the area of highest heat flow during the Late Permian, Triassic and Jurassic times, evidencing the Late Permian-Early Mesozoic rifting process. Numerous oil gas fields discovered in the Main Dolomite (Ca2) unit constitute it as one of the most important exploration target in the Polish Basin. It composes the closed hydrodynamic system sealed from the top and the bottom by evaporates. Both the source rocks and reservoirs are characteristic for this unit. Influence of the burial and thermal history of the Polish Basin on a petroleum play generation within the Main Dolomite unit is clearly visible. The previous and the present petroleum discoveries in the Polish Permian Basin, comparing to the other petroleum provinces in Poland, indicate it as a main exploration target.

Najważniejszy etap generowania gazu występował pomiędzy końcem wczesnego triasu a końcem późnej jury.
One-dimensional numerical modeling of hydrocarbon generation in profiles of Carboniferous source rocks was performed. These source rocks were located in the substratum of select areas in the central deep Rotligend Basin (Objezierze IG-1, Piła IG-1, Byczyna-1, Brześć Kujawski IG-1, Budziszewice IG-1 and Kutno-1). Carboniferous sediments of the central deep basin with a mean random vitrinite reflectance of 1.0-2.7%, generated significant amounts of methane, with low nitrogen content. Gas generation processes occurred mostly during the Mesozoic era particularly between Early Triassic to Late Jurassic periods and achieved kerogen transformation ratio (TR) values of 77-100%.

Opis:
In this article, the most recent moldavite discoveries in Poland and their host sediments are characterised and discussed. They were discovered at Lasów, located about 8 km north of Zgorzelec (Poland) and Görlitz (Germany), about 700 m from the Polish-German border, close to the Lusatian Neisse (Nysa) River. The tektites were collected from Vistulian (Wiechselian) glacial age sand and gravel of a closed quarry pit, associated with the river terraces. In the Lasów area, the moldavite-bearing sediments are Pleistocene in age and represent Lusatian Neisse terrace deposits. They were redeposited from the upper part of the drainage basin of the Lusatian Neisse, probably washed out from the Miocene sediments that filled the Zittau Depression, the Berzdorf–Radomierzyce Depression, the Višňová Depression and the tectonically uplifted Izera Mts. and Działoszyn Depression. The erosion of Miocene deposit occured on a large scale in the uplifted foothills of the Upper Miocene Izera, Lusatia and Kaczawa complexes. The sediment cover was removed from the Działoszyn Depression. The drainage basin of the Lusatian Neisse is the area where moldavites were formed by the Nördlinger Ries impact. The source area of moldavite is the same for the Miocene deposits around Gozdnica, as well as for the Pleistocene sediments at Lasów.

Do badań faunistycznych wykorzystano próbki utworów pobrane z rdzeni z otworów wiertniczych wykonanych w 2010 r. w zachodniej części zapadliska przedkarpackiego. Zidentyfikowano 12 gatunków małżów: Nucula (Nucula) nucleus (Linnaeus, 1758), Lentipecten corneus denudatus (Reuss, 1867), Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791), Inaequicostata cf. politioanei (Jekelius, 1944), Obsoletiforma vindobonensis (Laskarew, 1903), Plicatiforma pseudoplicata (Friedberg, 1934), Ervilia podolica (Eichwald, 1830), Ervilia trigonula Sokolov, 1899, Abra (Syndosmya) reflexa (Eichwald, 1830), Macoma (Psammacoma) elliptica (Brocchi, 1814), Corbula (Varicorbula) cf. gibba (Olivi, 1792) i Cuspidaria rostrata (Spengler, 1793). W artykule podano zasięgi stratygraficzne znalezionych gatunków i opisy rzadkich bądź ważnych stratygraficznie gatunków. Wyznaczona na podstawie zespołów małżowych granica baden/ sarmat przebiega w utworach z głębokości 109,10–127,70 m w otworze wiertniczym Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 i 150,80–162,80 m w otworze wiertniczym Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1.
The study is based on the fossil material derived from cores drilled in 2010 in the western part of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin. The deposits overlying the gypsum level, represented mainly by mudstones and clays of the Machów Fm., are less than 200 m thick in this part of the Carpathian Foredeep. In total, 56 samples were investigated: 32 samples from the Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 drilling core 200 m long; and 24 samples from the Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1 drilling core, 191 m long. Twelve bivalve species have been identified, namely: Nucula (Nucula) nucleus (Linnaeus, 1758), Lentipecten corneus denudatus (Reuss, 1867), Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791), Inaequicostata cf. politioanei (Jekelius, 1944), Obsoletiforma vindobonensis (Laskarew, 1903), Plicatiforma pseudoplicata (Friedberg, 1934), Ervilia podolica (Eichwald, 1830), Ervilia trigonula Sokolov, 1899, Abra (Syndosmya) reflexa (Eichwald, 1830), Macoma (Psammacoma) elliptica (Brocchi, 1814), Corbula (Varicorbula) cf. gibba (Olivi, 1792) and Cuspidaria rostrata (Spengler, 1793). Stratigraphic ranges of bivalve species as well as descriptions of rare or stratigraphically important species have been presented. The bivalves define the Badenian/ Sarmatian boundary within the depth range 109.10–127.70 m in the Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 borehole, and within the depth range 150.80–162.80 m in the Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1 borehole. Specifically, the scallop Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791) defines the base of the Machów Fm. as the Late Badenian, while the species Abra (Syndosmya) reflexa (Eichwald, 1830) enables to specify the age of the uppermost part of the Machów Fm. as the Early Sarmatian.

Opis:
Based on reflection seismic data, a regional tectonicmodel was constructed for the sub-Zechstein basement of the Pomeranian (NW) segment of theMid-Polish Trough (MPT). This model is based on the concept that the thick Zechstein salts acted on a basin-wide scale as a mechanical decoupling layer during the Mesozoic evolution of the MPT. Due to this regional decoupling effect, Mesozoic extensional faulting was mostly restricted to the sub-Zechstein salt basement whilst normal faulting played a subordinate role in the Mesozoic syn-extensional sedimentary series characterized by gradual lateral thickness changes. Locally, normal faulting affecting Mesozoic series triggered the development of salt diapirs. Mechanical decoupling ofMesozoic series fromtheir pre-Zechstein substratum played also an important role during the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene inversion of the Mid-Polish Trough. Taking into account: 1— the location of Mesozoic thickness gradients, 2—the structural configuration of the sub-Zechstein basement, and 3—the location of salt structures, a tectonic map was constructed showing the inferred sub-salt fault zones that were active during the subsidence and inversion of the Pomeranian part of the MPT. A high degree of correlation was achieved between the seismically mapped regional sub-salt structural patterns and magnetic and gravity features, as well as the main inversion structures. Moreover, a very good correlation was established between the inferred basement fault zones and the gross thickness patterns of the Triassic-Jurassic successions. The NE boundary of theMPT was generally controlled by the SW margin of the East European Craton, whilst its SW boundary coincides with a system of fault zones most probably inherited from earlier tectonic phases. Contrary to previous hypotheses, there is no evidence for important strike-slip faulting transverse to the main axis of the Pomeranian segment of the MPT.

The Cretaceous basin of the Lublin area belongs to the SE part of the Mid-Polish Trough and its NE border extending on the East European Craton. Our study is based on isopach maps of seven time intervals, from Neocomian to Early Maastrichtian. Several main lithofacies have been distinguished whose areal extents were plotted on thickness pattern maps. The isopach and lithofacies maps helped to delimit the basin depocenter, providing information on vertical motions of the basin basement and synsedimentary reactivation of older fault zones. The areal extents of the siliceous and chalk lithofacies have been shown to be controlled by the positions of discontinuity zones in the crystalline basement. Two stages of accelerated subsidence have been established: in Turonian and Early Maastrichtian times. Regional comparisons of accumulation rates and their accelerations during these time spans gave possibility to distinguish the roles of eustatic and tectonic factors in the process of augmenting the basin capacity. Some remarks concerning Early Maastrichtian timing of the inversion onset are also presented.

Opis:
Seven high-quality reflection-seismic lines, calibrated by wells, were interpreted in an effort to assess the timing of inversion and the structural configuration of the Pomeranian and Kuiavian segments of theMid-Polish Trough. Seismostratigraphic analyses of the Upper Cretaceous successions imaged by these seismic lines in the NE and SW marginal troughs of the Mid-Polish Swell document important along-strike stratigraphic and structural changes. Thickness variations of the Upper Cretaceous series, combined with the development of erosional unconformities and associated tectonic deformations indicate that inversion movements commenced during the late Turonian and intermittently persisted into the Maastrichtian and Paleocene. Earliest inversion movements were focused on the margins of the Mid-Polish Trough where Mesozoic sequences are decoupled from the sub-Zechstein series by Zechstein salts. Whereas the NE margin of theMid-Polish Trough is devoid of compressionally reactivated salt structures, its SWmargin is characterized by strong inversion- related salt tectonics. Progressive inversion of the axial parts of the Mid-Polish Trough was accompanied by uplift of its pre-Zechstein floor to and above the level of flanking, non-inverted areas, and by deep truncation ofMesozoic series across the culmination of the evolving Mid-Polish Swell. Inversion movements ceased towards the end of the Paleocene, as evidenced by the burial of the Mid-Polish Swell beneath essentially flat lying Eocene and younger series. Turonian-Paleocene inversion of the Mid-Polish Trough is coeval with the inversion of the Bohemian Massif, the North German Basin and the Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone. Inversion of the Mid-Polish Trough is considered to have been controlled mainly by compressional intraplate stresses that built up in the Carpathian foreland during the collision of the Inner Carpathian orogenic wedge with the European passivemargin, attesting to their increasing mechanical coupling, commencing during the Turonian. These stresses relaxed, however, with the end-Paleocene onset of imbrication of the Outer Carpathian domain, reflecting decoupling of the Carpathian orogenic wedge from its foreland.

The river Wieprzówka is an approximately 30 km long, left tributary of the Skawa river in the western part of Lesser Poland. The paper presents critical comments and remarks on the entries in question published in the 12th volume of the series “Hydronymia Europaea” in 1996. Extensive use of contemporary maps, historical sources and some other published and unpublished materials has enabled the author to correct and / or enrich our knowledge of the river names of that area. In particular, many historical names which, according to the authors of the volume, referred to objects that no longer exist or are nameless, now can be unequivocally identified with local rivers and streams. Among the etymological remarks contained in the paper, perhaps the most interesting are those aiming at the reconstruction of a topographic term *krakovъ > *kraków connected with the arboreal flora.

Pripyat River basin

dialect of Polish people displaced to Vitebsk and Mogilev regions
Opis:
A less known variety of Polish in Pripyat River basin and Vitebsk regionIn Belorussian Polesia in the basin of the Pripyat River as well as in Vitebsk and Mogilev regions, there are numerous villages inhabited by Polish people displaced from Mazovia and northern Little Poland. What is characteristic for this community is that they have preserved many features of the Mazovian variety of Polish, especially phonetic ones. In spite of the long-lasting and close contacts with East-Slavonic people of Polesia, and since 1939 with Russian and Belorussian languages (official languages, administration, education), features of their dialects have not been eliminated completely. The greatest changes took place in the lexis. Names for new objects and phenomena have appeared, some old names have co-existed with borrowings from Belorussian and Russian; a number old names have disappeared altogether. Apart from the lexical changes, some new borrowed syntactic constructions have emerged. Compared to the Polish language of the Northern Borderland, the Polesia variety of Polish is substantially different. In Polesia, Polish exhibits a number of Ukrainian features taken from the local East-Slavonic dialects, where the features of the Ukrai310 Iryda Grek-Pabisowa nian dialect dominate. In the vicinity Vitebsk and Mogilev, it has been influenced by various dialects of Belorussian as well as standard Belorussian and Russian.

Opis:
Detailedanalysis of lithofacies and their distribution in the Magura Beds in 11 transects in the eastern part of the Siary zone, revealed 16 facies and 6 associations of genetically and spatially related facies. The facies spectrum evidences deposition from a variety of mass gravity processes and subordinately by hemipelagic rain. The facies associations reveal depositional patterns of submarine fans and include: channels, channel-levees, channel-lobe transitions, depositional lobes and slump bodies. Correlation results (9 sections) and facies distribution together with paleocurrent directions suggest that the deposition of this part of Magura Beds took place in a submarine ramp/apron hybrid setting fed from a multipoint source. The depositional pattern of the Magura Beds in the study area records a two-stage development, which began with the emplacement of a sand/mud-rich type system and was followed by a mud-dominated system.
