The “post-October” revival, so visible in the Polish society at the end of 1956, was clearly marked by the scouting group. The group had already shown some impatience and radicalism, as issues related to scouting had been waiting for solutions on the part of the authorities for a long time. The congress in Łódź reactivated scouting. At the same time, it showed that everything that was happening inside the organization was nothing but a reflection of the processes taking place in society. The so-called October revolution did not have much in common with a real revolution, the October transformation would be a better term, as only a slight correction of the political system took place. ZHP was still limited by the system and greatly influenced by politics. That is why the “freedom”, regained in Łódź, turned out to be an illusion.

The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries brought an unprecedented number of youth organizations and movements in Galicia, which can be divided into three basic groups: the sports-tourism-gymnastic movement, the military movement and the ethical-revival movement. One of them was “Eleusis” movement initiated by Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954), a well-known philosopher, member of the Academy of Skills, and also the brother of Kazimierz Lutosławski, the legendary creator of the Scout Cross. “Eleusis” existed in the years 1903–1920, its aim was to prepare young Poles for the struggle for independence by educating their morals. “Eleusis” rejected violence and armed struggle. “Eleusis” was a strictly Catholic organization – a kind of secular order. However, it never received the official blessing of the Catholic Church. Many Eleusis members later joined the ranks of the Polish scouts and it is thanks to the Eleusian spirit that Polish scouting has the rule of alcohol and tobacco abstinence in its Scouting Law. Whereas, the meaning and influence of scouts on Polish youth is undisputed today.

The Polish scouting movement, which wrote such a beautiful page of history during  the Second World War, after 1945 found itself in an extremely difficult situation. The aims and the forms of educational influence of ZHP (poi. abbr. Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego - Polish Scouting Association) proved unacceptable by the government of a totalitarian state, which the Polish People’s Republic (Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa - PRL) was. As a result, ZHP was originally marginalized, and then, for several years, had been completely dissolved. The reconstruction of the scouting movement started at the end of 1956, on the wave of a political thaw. Such actions led, in the years 1956-1958, to a formal recreation of ZHP, however, since then, this organization was entirely subject to PZPR (Polish communist party). Consequently, following 1958, ZHP was incorporated into the structure of a communist youth movement in Poland. Moreover, in accordance with the rules of the socialist political system and the principles of a planned economy, the scouting movement was „delegated” to work in school. Since then, in compliance with the guidelines of the Central Committee of PZPR, the activity of the Polish Scouting Association (ZHP) was to become an integral element of the school's educational programme. It meant that the scouting movement was supposed to actively participate in shaping of socialist attitudes in children and youth, according to the main task of the Polish school which was reformed in 1961. Unexpectedly, the party authorities and educational authorities were confronted with the opposition of ZHP leadership that they controlled. ZHP, for a long time, resolutely rejected the suggestion about a necessity to strengthen the ties of this organization and school. In reality, in early 1960s, the scouting movement defended the remnants of its autonomy, struggling against becoming one of the tools for shaping a young generation of Poles through ideologized Polish school. The practice showed that the arguments of scouts did not have any significance for communist authorities as they consequently kept on achieving their own goals.

The paper discusses the issues of family and parenthood in the education pedagogies of Polish scouting organisations in the years 1911–1939 and 1939–1945. It analyses source materials of Polish scouting organisations, the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association ZHP (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego), the Polish Girl Scouts Organisation/Clover Association/Be Ready (Organizacja Harcerek/Związku Koniczyn/Bądź Gotów), the Grey Ranks (Szare Szeregi), the Polish Scouting Regiments (Hufce Polskie). In those years, there were different dominating pedagogies of educating Polish boy scouts and girl scouts. The pedagogies addressed to Polish girl scouts, focused on indoctrinating girls into the roles of mothers raising future generations and complementing the man. In the latter period, the bravery of women was included in those pedagogies, as well as their vocational training, but only in professions that were socially useful. Pedagogies addressed to Polish boy scouts were more stable. The following two types were alternately dominant: the soldier and the citizen, whereas the theme of family and parenthood is mentioned directly only in the period 1939–1945, in the Polish Scouting Regiments organisation.

The outbreak of the first Silesian Uprising in 1919 was a spontaneous phenomenon that got out of the control of then formal decision-makers on the Polish side, at the same time it surprised the German side. Scouts from the entire independent Republic of Poland – including Lodz, participated in subsequent events in Upper Silesia. The author based his considerations on articles from the scouting press of the time, a few internal documents of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (ZHP) and memories. As a result of the source analysis, it was able to present a picture of the strong support provided by the Lodz scouting in the Silesian uprisings and the plebiscite in years 1920–1921. The activities of the scout instructors delegated to Silesia, noted in the memories, show that their work was distant from the mission of the ZHP and was purely propaganda.

The article discusses the activity of the Scout Publishing House “Horyzonty” since its establishment in 1958 until its inclusion into the structures of the Youth Publishing Agency in 1976. It provides a detailed characteristic of the organizational evolution of the publishing house and its publishing repertoire of books and magazines. The article draws attention to the economic aspect as well as distribution and promotional activities. Although the publishing house was connected with the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association as far as its organization and repertoire were concerned, its thematic profile evolved from discipline handbooks to popular science books and belles letters intended for kids at the age of 12–15. On the one hand, subordination to the home organization facilitated establishing contacts, which resulted in promotional actions led in cooperation with other organizations close to the Association. On the other hand, it was a burden related to the necessity of fulfilling service tasks which not always translated into an active economic balance. The analysis presented in the article is based on documents gathered in the Central Archive of Modern Records in Warsaw and publishing catalogues. It was supplemented with interviews given by the consecutive directors, press publications and data from Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach (Publishing Movement in Numbers)

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, jakie rozumienia duchowości (a co za tym idzie – rozwoju duchowego), występują w dokumentach Związku Harcerstwa Polskiego w latach 1989-2022 oraz które z nich są dominujące. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Przeprowadzę analizę źródeł wtórnych, dokumentów (Palka, 2006, s. 72) takich jak: statut, podstawy wychowawcze, harcerskie kodeksy moralne, uchwały władz ZHP według schematu badań historycznych (Rubacha, 2008). PROCES WYWODU: Na początku rozważań prezentuję analizę wartości zawartych w treściach statutu, uchwał i harcerskich kodeksów moralnych ZHP, gdyż traktuję te wartości jako fundamenty rozwoju duchowego. Następnie przechodzę do przedstawienia zmian rozumienia rozwoju duchowego w stowarzyszeniu. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Analiza treści zawartych w dokumentach ZHP w latach 1989-2022 pozwala stwierdzić, że w stowarzyszeniu przeplatają się dwa różne rozumienia duchowości: tradycyjne i ponowoczesne. Dominujące jest tradycyjne z lat 1995-2017. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Zaproponowana analiza może stanowić przyczynek do dalszych poszukiwań badawczych rozumienia rozwoju duchowego w innych organizacjach harcerskich i skautowych w Polsce i za granicą. Może też być inspiracją podczas kolejnych dyskusji członków Związku Harcerstwa Polskiego.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to show what understandings of spirituality (and consequently, spiritual development) can be found in the documents issued by the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (ZHP) in the years 1989-2022, and which of them is dominant. RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In order to answer these questions, I will create a narrative, following the pattern of historical research (Rubacha, 2008), to analyse secondary sources, documents (Palka, 2006, p. 72), such as: Statutes, educational curricula, Scout Codes of Conduct, resolutions of the ZHP authorities. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: At the beginning of my deliberations, I present an analysis of the values contained in the Statutes, resolutions and Codes of Conduct of ZHP, as I consider these values to be the foundation of spiritual development. Then, I go to present changes in understanding the spiritual development by the association. RESEARCH RESULTS: Analysis of the ZHP documents from the years 1989-2022 allows to state that the association applies alternately two different understandings of spirituality: traditional and post-modern. The traditional one is dominant in the years 1995-2017. After that period, the discussion on understanding the spirituality was reinitiated in the association. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS: The proposed analysis may occur to be a contribution to further research on understanding the spiritual development in other scout and scouting organisations in Poland and abroad. It may also be an inspiration for further discussions undertaken by members of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association.

Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka źródeł leksyki w środowisku harcerskim. Materiał badawczy pochodzi ze źródeł wewnętrznych – poradników harcerskich, oraz źródeł zewnętrznych – słowników języka ogólnego. Słownictwo wyekscerpowano, stosując teorię pól znaczeniowych i zaznaczono jego pierwotne pola tematyczne (obszary, z których zostało przeniesione). Następnie materiał przeanalizowano pod kątem mechanizmów pojawiania się w zasobie leksykalnym harcerzy. W badanym zbiorze zaobserwowano zapożyczenia (wewnętrzne i zewnętrzne), neologizmy oraz neosemantyzmy (autorsko podzielone na właściwe, precyzujące i kolokacyjne).
The aim of the article is to characterize the sources of vocabulary used in the scouting community. The research material was taken from the internal sources – scouting handbooks, as well as the external sources – general language dictionaries. The words were excerpted based on the theory of semantic fields, and their primary thematic fields were indicated (i.e. the areas from which their meanings were transferred). Then the material was analysed with regard to the mechanisms of appearing in the scouts’ lexicon. In the researched set loanwords (both internal and external), neologisms, and neosemanticisms were observed. The latter were divided by the author into proper, specifying, and collocative ones.

This paper looks at the origins and early days of the Cracow Region Boys’ Division of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association, commonly referred to in Polish as ZHP, its abbreviated form. It describes the organisational growth of the Region against the backdrop of a variety of documents pertaining to the contemporaneous local and central scouting and guiding authorities (1920–1921). The paper has been written on the basis of unpublished archive sources retrieved from the Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw – the collection of the „Polish Scouting and Guiding Association Archive [1913‒1939]”, as well as the existing paperback sources – such as the reports of the Branch and Region headquarters, the orders given by the region headquarters, the reports of the Supreme Scouting and Guiding Council, and the publications found in the scouting and guiding press. The formation of the Region was connected to the ultimate merger of the former district scouting and guiding organisations into a uniform ZHP at the First General ZHP Meeting, held in Warsaw from 31 December 1920 to 2 January 1921. At the same time, the Board of the Krakow Branch of ZHP was gradually taking shape. In 1921, in Krakow there were as many as 18 teams subdivided into three troops. The whole community was well thought of by the authorities and received extensive support from the locals. At a later stage, its work was organised by eminent scouting and guiding activists. During the wartime occupation, some of them paid with their lives to prove their unreserved loyalty to the ideals of scouting.
Artykuł przedstawia początki działalności Krakowskiej Chorągwi Męskiej ZHP. Opisuje rozwój organizacyjny chorągwi w świetle dokumentów ówczesnych lokalnych oraz centralnych władz harcerskich (1920–1921). W opracowaniu wykorzystano niepublikowane źródła archiwalne, znajdujące się w Archiwum Akt Nowych w Warszawie (zespół „Archiwum Związku Harcerstwa Polskiego [1913–1939]”) oraz zachowane źródła drukowane (sprawozdania Zarządu Oddziału i komendy chorągwi, rozkazy komendy chorągwi, sprawozdania Naczelnej Rady Harcerskiej i publikacje na łamach prasy harcerskiej). Powstanie chorągwi było związane z ostatecznym połączeniem w jednolity ZHP dawnych dzielnicowych organizacji harcerskich na I Walnym Zjeździe ZHP w Warszawie (31 grudnia 1920 – 2 stycznia 1921). Równolegle organizował się Zarząd Oddziału Krakowskiego ZHP. W 1921 r. w Krakowie działało już 18 drużyn podzielonych na trzy hufce. Środowisko było dobrze oceniane przez władze i wspierane przez lokalną społeczność. Jego pracę organizowali późniejsi wybitni działacze harcerscy; niektórzy z nich w czasie okupacji ofiarą swojego życia zaświadczyli o wierności harcerskim ideałom.
