Opis:
The article is an attempt at providing description of the functioning and transformations of masculinity in culture, and above all in literature after 1945. Whileemploying theoretical languages of R.W. Connell and K. Silverman, well‑rooted in the tradition of masculinity studies, the author strives to reconstruct its dynamics, which is shaped by tension between two categories: hegemony (as the required position of masculinity ensured by military experience) and trauma (as a real and long‑term result of this experience). The tension between the cultural discipline of hegemony and the increasing awareness of trauma shapes other oppositions, which makes it possible to model the historical course of the transformations of masculinity and leads to the creation of postmodern, demilitarized and “depatriarchalised” male habitus. One of their distinguishing features is reevaluation of the previously neglected spheres of male experience, such as fatherhood.

Persons repressed in the Polish People’s Republic may base their claims for damages only on the provisions of the Act on the Recognition as Invalid of Judgments Issued Against Persons Repressed for their Activities for the Independent Existence of the Polish State. It is excluded to pursue claims in this respect on the basis of civil law or the Constitution. The basic condition for pursuing a claim is the declaration of invalidity of the decision issued by the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic. These rules apply both to those repressed because of the armed struggle and because of the resistance to collectivisation. These claims are not part of the inheritance, but are based on the principle of singular succession.

Celem artykułu jest rekonstrukcja szczególnej filmowej reprezentacji funkcjonariuszy Polskiej Zjednoczonej Partii Robotniczej w kontekście przemian w partii i jej społecznego postrzegania w latach 70. Analizując filmy Gdzie woda czysta i trawa zielona (1977) Bohdana Poręby i Wysokie loty (1978) Ryszarda Filipskiego, jak również wcześniejszą Linię (1974) Kazimierza Kutza, autor zastanawia się, jaki był kontekst ich powstania, w jaki sposób były konstruowane postacie sekretarzy, jakie problemy uważano za najważniejsze, jak te filmy były postrzegane w kontekście ówczesnego kina. Aby odpowiedzieć na te pytania, oprócz filmów trzeba uwzględnić także stenogramy komisji kolaudacyjnych oraz kolejne wersje scenariuszy i scenopisów, jak również recepcję prasową. Pozwala to ukazać, jaką rolę i sensy przypisywano tym filmom, jak również wskazać na dystans, jaki dzielił oficjalną recepcję od ich rzeczywistego znaczenia.
The purpose of this article is the reconstruction of film representation of the officers of the PZPR (Polish United Workers’ Party) in the context of changes in the party and its public perception in the 1970s. The author in his analysis of Bohdan Poręba’s Where the Water Is Pure and the Grass Is Green (1977) and Ryszard Filipski’s High Flights (1978), and the earlier The Line (1974) by Kazimierz Kutz, considers the context of their creation, how were the characters of the party secretaries constructed, which problems were considered to be most important and how were these films perceived in the context of the contemporary cinema. In order to answer these questions what needs to be considered apart from films, are the transcripts of the approval committees and subsequent versions of screenplays and storyboards, as well as press reception. This reveals the role and meanings attributed to the films, as well as the distance that divided the official reception from their actual meaning.

Śpiewający obywatel – pod warunkiem, że śpiewał na ekranie coś „słusznego” – cieszył się w kinie socrealistycznym niepisaną licentia vocalica, udzieloną na zasadzie bezumownej koncesji przez władzę. Myśl przewodnią tekstu Hendrykowskiego stanowi hipoteza dwoistości estetycznych źródeł piosenki w polskim filmie socrealistycznym. Z jednej strony źródłem tym jest wzorzec radzieckiej pieśni i piosenki, z drugiej – model rodzimy, oparty na tradycjach piosenki okresu międzywojennego. Pod względem ideologicznym (poetyka założona) oba modele stoją z sobą w sprzeczności. Pod względem estetycznym (poetyka zrealizowana) – poddane socrealistycznej obróbce, okazują się zbliżone. Melanż, do jakiego wówczas doszło, jest osobliwym paradoksem poetyki nie tylko piosenki filmowej, ale również pewnych aspektów poetyki kina socrealistycznego. Od czasów podszytej zachodnią kulturą popularną komedii Świat się śmieje istniało krytykowane przez ortodoksów politycznych przyzwolenie na formalne odstępstwo od sztywnych wymogów socrealistycznej sztampy. Liczyła się generalna zasada, a ta pozostawała niezmienna i prosta. O tym, czy dana piosenka znajdzie się „na wyposażeniu” bohaterów, decydowała nie jej melodia, lecz retoryka tekstu. Jego ideowej wymowy czynniki decyzyjne pilnowały z niestrudzoną czujnością. Wszystko inne mogło być w widowisku filmowym mniej lub bardziej dowolne i umowne.
A singing citizen – provided that he sang on screen something “right” – enjoyed the unwritten socialist-realist cinema licentia vocalica, granted on a non-contractual concession by the government. The central idea of Hendrykowski’s article is the hypothesis of duality of aesthetic sources of songs in Polish socialist realist films. On the one hand the songs are modelled on the Soviet style song, on the other hand they are made according to the local model, based on the songs of the interwar period. Ideologically (in terms of poetics assumed), the models contradict each other. In terms of the aesthetic (the poetics realised), subjected to socialist realist treatment they appear to be similar. The melange obtained is a paradox of poetics of film song and certain aspects of the poetics of socialist cinema. Since the days of the popular, Western influenced, comedy Moscow Laughs (1934), there existed a consent, criticised by the political orthodoxy, for not following the strict demands of the socialist realist ideology. What mattered was the general rule, and that remained simple and unchanged. The question of whether a song will be granted to a hero was decided not by its melody, but by the rhetoric of the lyrics. Its ideological dimension was guarded with tireless vigilance by the government. Everything else could be more or less arbitrary and conventional.

Political changes in the 1980’s could happen largely due to involvement of the youth in opposition activities. One of the reasons for that was the openness of the youth towards formation proposals which were proposed by the Polish church in the years 1945-1989. In this communist period there was a constant fight with the communist government to protect spirituality of the youth. The last chapter of this clash took place in the 80’s. The communist government tried to restrict churches’ influence on the young people at all costs. In this article the documents of the communist party of the city of Gdansk were presented. They analyse the influence on the youth through the academic priesthoods, Ruch Światło - Zycie, organisation of cultural events. They also report examples of disobeying, by the school boards and teachers, the so called ‘school secularity’ which is the presence of crosses in the class rooms. At that time for once more the communist authorities ran the campaign of removing religious symbols from the educational establishments in the whole country.

From all of the German literature distributed in Poland during the first half of the nineteen fifties, that of the GDR was the most strongly represented, because like the People's Republic, it was part of the Eastern Bloc. A substantial part of this literature touched upon the themes of the Second World War. As some prominent Eastern German authors had taken part in the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939, this subject also couldn't be ignored.The introduction in 1949 of socialist realism as the most important criterion of art, and particulary strong political pressure, led to a great deal of confusion and insecurity, not only for Polish publishing houses, but also among the censors, whose task was to take decisions about what literature could be printed. Censors’ opinions in this period often differed, not only in terms of detailed matter, but also in the final decisions about the eventual fate of the title submitted for evaluation.

The article interprets the novel Gwiazda Piołun by Władysław Lech Terlecki. Its main character is based on the real life figure of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz – author, painter, philosopher. The author of the article indicates the relationships between the accounts of Witkacy’s death and its fictional version. Terlecki’s story of a painter who escapes from war, only to commit suicide eventually, became a pretext for discussing the events from September 1939 and March 1968.

The texts included in the volume deal with the issues concerning the creation and circulation of literary works in the Polish People’s Republic. The elements of a literary career, such as recognition of an author, his or her descent or pro‑state activity, are the subject of study. The authors persuade that the social position of a writer did not always correspond with the artistic value of his or her work and that it is possible to reconstruct the transformations of the cultural politics in the Polish People’s Republic on the basis of the examination of the fate of the books handed in for evaluation to the office of censorship. The analysis of the specific careers proves the thesis that literature in the communist system could not be situated outside the cultural context and the external factors had a significant impact on the final form of the work.

Polish science quite rarely identifies the postwar period as well as the time of the Polish People’s Republic with modernity or modernization. More often the questions on succumbing and enslavement appear, in particular in recent years we can notice the discourses which compare the period of the Polish People’s Republic to the times of the German occupation, thus the state socialism to the Nazism. Although it may seem that currently it is even more difficult to perceive the times of the Polish People’s Republic as the time of modernization, this is the approach I would like to propose.

Artykuł prezentuje wykorzystywanie w doktrynie i praktyce orzeczniczej Polski Ludowej 1944–1969 konstrukcji zamiaru ewentualnego (dolus eventualis) do kształtowania – a de facto zaostrzania – polityki karnej w sprawach o czyny objęte nieumyślnością. Autor koncentruje swoje rozważania w szczególności na sprawach przeciwko interesom politycznym i gospodarczym państwa, przestępczości komunikacyjnej oraz dotyczących przeciwdziałania negatywnym skutkom alkoholizmu. Przeprowadzone analizy wskazują, że we wszystkich tych obszarach braki systemu prawa karnego oraz subtelna (dowodowa) różnica między świadomą nieumyślnością (lekkomyślnością) a zamiarem ewentualnym były wykorzystywane na niekorzyść potencjalnych sprawców. Fakty te dobitnie potwierdzają znaną powszechnie właściwość ówczesnego systemu, a więc jego instrumentalizm w wykorzystywaniu prawa karnego, do kształtowania – zwalczania – negatywnych aspektów rzeczywistości społeczno-gospodarczo-politycznej.
The article presents the use of the construct of recklessness (dolus eventualis) in the doctrine and judicial practice of the People's Republic of Poland between 1944 and 1969 in order to shape – and de facto tighten – the penal policy in cases which involved acts which were classified as unintentional. The paper focuses its ruminations in particular on cases against the political and economic interests of the state, traffic offences and counteracting the negative effects of alcoholism. The conducted analyses indicate that in all these areas the shortcomings of the criminal law system and the subtle (evidence) difference between the deliberate inadvertence (recklessness) and possible intention were used to the detriment of potential perpetrators. These facts clearly confirm the well-known feature of the contemporary system, namely its instrumentalism in the use of criminal law to shape – fight – the negative aspects of the social, economic, and political reality.

This review discussed the book by Michał Jacek Jarmuż (2020), entitled Housing Problems in Poland in the 1970s in the Light of Personal Documents [Problemy mieszkaniowe w Polsce w latach siedemdziesiątych XX wieku w świetle dokumentów osobistych] which was published in 2020 by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. This publication is the result of the doctoral dissertation defended in 2014, written under the supervision of prof. Dariusz Jarosz at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, who has specialized and researched for many years, inter alia, housing issues in 20th-century Poland, doing so both through the lens of classic archival files and personal documents (Jarosz, 1996; 2006; 2008; 2010; Miernik, 2006). This fact undoubtedly influenced the choice of research topics and the type of historical sources used in the work.

Po pierwsze, odtwarza kulisy organizacyjne imprezy, zwracając szczególną uwagę na ograniczenia instytucjonalne oraz problemy logistyczne ściśle powiązane z niewydolnością państwa socjalistycznego. Po drugie, analizuje politykę repertuarową festiwalu, która odzwierciedlała napięcie między dążeniem organizatorów do ukazania najważniejszych trendów w kinie światowym a koniecznością promocji słusznych pod względem ideologicznym filmów socjalistycznych. Po trzecie, wskazuje na założenia programowe imprezy i odnosi je do bardziej ogólnych procesów, jakie zachodziły w europejskiej kulturze filmowej w okresie powojennym (wykształcenie się instytucji oraz dyskursów służących promocji i dystrybucji filmu artystycznego).
The author describes the creation and development of one of the most important film events in the Polish People’s Republic. On the example of the first nine editions of the Festival of Film Festivals, renamed in 1967 as World Film Review – Confrontations, the author presents various aspects of the functioning of film culture during this period. Firstly, he recreates the backstage of the event, paying special attention to institutional restrictions and logistical problems closely related to the failure of the socialist state. Secondly, he analyses the festival’s repertoire policy, which reflected the tension between the organizers’ desire to show the most important trends in world cinema and the need to promote ideologically correct socialist films. Thirdly, he points to the programe assumptions of the event and refers them to the more general processes that took place in European film culture in the post-war period (the formation of institutions and discourses to promote and distribute artistic film).
