    The paper aims to promote a neglected, and consequently little‑known, writer of the period of the Polish Enlightenment – Wincenty Ignacy Marewicz (1775–1822), the author of, among others, poems, writings in verse and prose, a collection of sayings, as well as comedies, dramas and an opera. The publication discusses some of the elements of the publishing framework (including dedications, prefaces, epigraphs, and lists of works already published) which the writer used in his dramatic works and which include important information about him, his work and life. The paper is a kind of reconnaissance to pave the way for further research on the above‑mentioned subject.

    Celem artykułu jest poruszenie problemu zastosowania instrumentarium krytyki feministycznej do badań nad literaturą polskiego oświecenia. Jak dotąd, nie cieszy się ona popularnością w środowisku rodzimych znawców tej epoki. Wskazano zalety feminizmu w literaturoznawstwie jak również potencjalne zagrożenia, związane z aplikowaniem kategorii gender do badań nad literaturą dawną. Największym zagrożeniem wydaje się nieuwzględnianie kontekstu historycznego i społeczno-kulturowego. Przywołano prace odnoszące się do innych epok lub literatur obcych, które mogą stanowić punkt wyjścia do badań piśmiennictwa polskiego oświecenia. Jedną z nich jest monografia Marka Jastrzębca-Mosakowskiego, zatytułowana Strategie wymazywania. Kobiece bohaterki w męskich tekstach francuskiego Oświecenia. Wymieniono badaczy polskiego oświecenia, którzy dostrzegają potencjał gender studies (Barbara Judkowiak, Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska). Wskazano obszary badań i możliwości, jakie daje użycie narzędzi krytyki feministycznej. Spodziewane efekty to przywrócenie imienia anonimowych dotąd autorek, odkrycie lub ponowne odczytanie ich twórczości, otwarcie nowych przestrzeni dla jej opisu i interpretacji.
    The article raises the problem of the use of the feminist criticism apparatus in research on the Polish Enlightenment literature. The method has not been popular among Polish experts of the epoch. The article discusses the advantages of feminism in literature studies as well as the potential risks associated with the application of the category gender to research on early literature. The greatest threat seems to be the failure to take into account the historical and socio-cultural context. The paper refers to other epochs or foreign literature, which may constitute a starting point for research into the literature of Polish Enlightenment. One such work is a monograph by Marek Jastrzębiec-Mosakowski entitled Strategie wymazywania. Kobiece bohaterki w męskich tekstach francuskiego Oświecenia [Strategies of erasure. Female heroines in the male texts of French Enlightenment]. The article lists researchers of Polish Enlightenment who notice the potential of gender studies (Barbara Judkowiak, Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska) and  points to the areas of research and possibilities offered by the use of feminist criticism tools. The article aims at restoring the names of the previously anonymous female authors, discovering or re-reading their work, as well as opening new spaces for their description and interpretation.

    Wskazując na postępującą marginalizację piśmiennictwa doby oświecenia w programach nauczania języka polskiego, realizowanych w szkole średniej (ponadgimnazjalnej) na przestrzeni ostatnich kilkunastu lat, autor artykułu skupia się na powiązanym z tym zjawiskiem pogłębianiu się problemu jednostronnego, zdominowanego przez stereotypy i uproszczenia, odbioru tamtej literatury. Stawia pytanie o to, w jaki sposób należałoby czytać osiemnastowieczne i wczesnodziewiętnastowieczne teksty, by – w imię przywracania im należnej rangi w kulturowym obiegu – zobaczyć je nie tylko w kontekście historyczno-społecznym, a tym samym nie sprowadzać ich znaczenia do przekazu dydaktycznego bądź politycznego. W obliczu niepokojących, bo instrumentalizujących dzieło literackie, trendów, które pojawiają się w przestrzeni literaturoznawstwa, podkreśla jednocześnie potrzebę wystrzegania się sytuacji, w której rzutowane na dawny tekst przekonania ideologiczne badacza zdają się nad tym tekstem – jako przedmiotem obserwacji – dominować, zafałszowując jego obraz.
    Pointing to the progressive marginalization of the Enlightenment literature in the Polish language curricula implemented in secondary schools over the last several years, the author focuses on the related phenomenon of biased reception of that literature, dominated by stereotypes and simplifications. The author asks how the 18th and early-19th-century texts should be read – with the aim of restoring their proper rank in the cultural tradition – to perceive them not only in the historical and social context, and thus not to reduce their meaning to a didactic or political message. In the face of the disturbing trends in the field of literary studies, which instrumentalise a literary work, the author also stresses the need to avoid a situation in which the ideological beliefs of the researcher projected on an older text seem to dominate it, distorting its image.

    The article describes a group of one hundred and twenty Polish authors who were active from about the mid-18th to the mid-19th century and formed part of the Counter-Enlightenment movement. The writers in question came from the gentry but mostly belonged to the clergy, with diocesan priests being the most numerous. The next largest group were the Jesuits, followed by the Piarists and missionaries, and the smallest part was made up of representatives of all the other circles. The authors came from the eastern lands of the former First Polish Republic, i.e., Małopolska and Podlasie. The issues they discussed were influenced by the nature of the vocation pursued by a given order, the unification and standardization of religious education in accordance with the Catholic Enlightenment, and to a lesser extent, by foreign studies (mainly in Rome) and access to libraries. Counter-Enlightenment writers were active in large centers – Warsaw, Vilnius, Krakow, and Lviv, less often in the provinces. As many as eighty-seven of them were authors of more than two original works, and eighteen were translators of foreign works on the subject. Some authors were promoted by representatives of the magnates; others benefited from the support of the clerical hierarchy. Most, however, acted independently.

    Artykuł dotyczy sytuacji osób chorych psychicznie w społeczeństwach europejskich osiemnastego stulecia. Spostrzeżenia na ten temat przedstawię, posiłkując się badaniami historyków, antropologów kultury oraz świadectwami literackimi pochodzącymi z epoki. Postaram się pokazać rozmaite postawy wobec interesującego mnie rodzaju niepełnosprawności. Dawna tradycja - uwarunkowana przekonaniami religijnymi - i żywa nadal w wieku osiemnastym – nakazywała traktować osoby dotknięte chorobą psychiczną jako wybrane i naznaczone przez Boga. Chorym należał się więc szacunek, a sama choroba gwarantowała nietykalność i opiekę ze strony wspólnoty. Później chorobę psychiczną zaczęto łączyć z winą moralną. Skutkowało to wykluczaniem i wyrzucaniem chorych poza obręb społeczeństwa. W kulturze świeckiej choroba umysłowa – ze względu na odbiegające od standardowych zachowania cierpiących na nią ludzi - stawała się przedmiotem kpin. Chorujący byli obiektem prymitywnej rozrywki zarówno pospólstwa, jak i elit. Wzbudzali lęk połączony z niezdrową ciekawością. Izolowano ich więc i przetrzymywano w ekstremalnie ciężkich warunkach. Wynikało to z przekonania, że osoby chore psychicznie nie odczuwają zimna ani głodu na równi z innymi ludźmi. Z czasem w miejscach odosobnienia pojawili się pierwsi naukowcy - lekarze, próbując na pacjentach mniej lub bardziej udanych form terapii. Wyraźną zmianę nastawienia do choroby psychicznej obserwujemy w związku z upowszechnieniem się w Europie światopoglądu sentymentalnego, postulującego otoczenie chorych szacunkiem, współczuciem i opieką.
    Th e article concerns the situation of the mentally ill in European societies of the eighteenth century. Observations on the subject I present, using historians research, cultural anthropologists and literary testimonies originating from the era. I shall try to show various attitudes towards interesting to me kind of disability. An ancient tradition - determined by religious beliefs - and still alive in the eighteenth century - dictated to treat people suff ering a mental illness as chosen and marked by God. So Patients belonged respect, and the disease itself guaranteed the inviolability and custody of the community. Aft erwards mental illness began to be combined with moral blame. Th is resulted in the exclusion and the ejection sick beyond the society. In the secular culture mental illness - due to diff ering from the people standard behavior - became the subject of mockery. Patients were the object of primitive entertainment both common people and elites. Th ey aroused anxiety combined with an unhealthy curiosity. So they were isolated and kept in extremely severe conditions. Th is stemmed from the belief that mentally ill people do not feel the cold or hunger like other people. Over time in places of detention appeared the fi rst scientists - doctors, trying on patients more or less successful forms of therapy. Distinct change in attitude to mental illness we observe in connection with the spread of sentimental outlook in Europe, which postulated the treatment of patients with respect, compassion and care.

    The affective turn is one of the well-visible so-called twists in contemporary cultural research, which also has clear repercussions for literary research. The literature discussing the phenomenon itself, especially using the methodological solutions introduced by this phrase, is extensive. These methodological solutions are particularly willingly applied to new and newest phenomena, emerging and taking place since the middle of the 20th century. However, contemporary affective research largely grows out of an interest in the emotions of old times, to refer to the works of Barbara Rosenwein. Thus, it seems fully justified to look at the broadly understood emotional phenomena in the 18th century using methods falling within the framework of the affective turn. Of course, the affective turn will not contribute to discovering the existence of new emotions in the Enlightenment Age, because research into the emotionality of this period has a long tradition, especially in the study of sentimentalism. This term prompts reflection on the network of concepts and terms in the field of emotions concerning various cultures and literature of the 18th century. The essential part of this paper is an attempt to answer the questions about what testimonies of Polish 18th-century emotionality are at our disposal today and with what methods they can be interpreted. In other words, it will be an attempt to consider what we can see – thanks to the sensitivity to emotions, also related to the methods of affective turn – in the emotional (mainly textual, but also, for example, iconic) Polish space of the second half of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

The present issue of "Tematy i Konteksty" ("Themes and Contexts") also includes the papers devoted to interpretation of 19th century literature, reviews, reports and announcements. The authors of studies are scholars from a range of academic institutions in Poland.

    Cudzoziemski strój oświeceniowej damy modnej, podobnie jak męski frak, był synonimem bezrefleksyjnego naśladownictwa obcych polskiej kulturze wzorów obyczajowych. Zjawisko to wielokrotnie krytykowano w ówczesnych tekstach publicystycznych i literackich, w tym również w satyrze. Tytułowy problem zaprezentowany został w niniejszym artykule na przykładzie trzech utworów satyrycznych autorstwa Elżbiety Drużbackiej, Ignacego Krasickiego i Jana Gorczyczewskiego. Ich zróżnicowana przynależność czasowa (faza prekursorska, dojrzała i schyłkowa epoki polskiego oświecenia) pokazuje, iż manifestująca się w stroju modnych dam fascynacja kulturą znad Sekwany była zjawiskiem eksponowanym w literaturze już od schyłku czasów saskich aż po epokę postanisławowską. Co przy tym znamienne i co poświadcza lektura wskazanych utworów, damy z elit – w ubiorach, zachowaniu, zainteresowaniach – chciały również naśladować szlachcianki i tak nowa kultura rozpowszechniona w Warszawie przenikała za ich sprawą na prowincję. W ocenie wielu ówczesnych intelektualistów, w tym także literatów, nowa moda była zjawiskiem groźnym, szkodliwym społecznie, któremu należało przeciwdziałać. Lubowanie się w zbytkach, egoizm, próżność, lenistwo, głupota, bezrefleksyjność, czasem lekkomyślność i brak doświadczenia, a częściej wyrachowanie i nadmierne ambicje to katalog wad najczęściej przypisywanych modnym damom. Badawczy ogląd wymienionych tekstów potwierdza fakt, że oświeceniowa satyra w znaczącym stopniu przyczyniła się do utrwalenia stereotypowego wizerunku modnej damy, przywiązującej nadmierną wagę do swojego strojnego wyglądu. Spod satyrycznego pióra autorów wyłania się również każdorazowo krytyczna refleksja, iż ta snobistyczna, bezkrytyczna pogoń za francuszczyzną odbywała się bez oglądania się na konsekwencje nie tylko finansowe, ale i kulturowe.
    The foreign outfit of a fashionable Enlightenment lady, just like a man’s tailcoat, was synonymous with thoughtless imitation of moral patterns foreign to Polish culture. This phenomenon was often criticized in journalistic and literary texts of the time, including satires. In this article, the title problem is presented through the example of three satirical works by Elżbieta Drużbacka, Ignacy Krasicki, and Jan Gorczyczewski. Their different time periods (the prelude, the mature and decline of the Polish Enlightenment) show that the fascination with the culture of the Seine, manifested in the dress of fashionable ladies, was reflected in literature from the end of the Saxon period to the post-Stanislaus era. It is important to not that, as can be seen from the above-mentioned works, the elite ladies also wanted to imitate artistocrats in their dress, behavior and interests, and it was thanks to them that the new culture spread from Warsaw to the provinces. In the opinion of many intellectuals of the time, including writers, the new fashion was a dangerous and socially harmful phenomenon that should be counteracted. Indulgence in luxury, egoism, vanity, laziness, stupidity, thoughtlessness, sometimes recklessness and lack of experience, and more often calculation and excessive ambition is the catalogue of faults most often attributed to fashionable ladies. A scholarly review of these texts confirms that Enlightenment satire was instrumental in perpetuating the stereotypical image of the fashionable lady who places excessive importance on her elegant appearance. From the satirical pen of the authors, a critical reflection always emerges that this snobbish, uncritical pursuit of the French took place without regard to the consequences, not only financial but also cultural.

    The paper focuses on several poems by Franciszek Zabłocki (or more precisely: poems unanimously attributed to this poet), written during the session of the Great Sejm and in various ways: using irony, but also the language proper to sharp name satire — referring to the phenomenon that due to their content could be seen in terms of a disease that consumed the elite of the Republic of Poland. This disease is an omission. The ways of thinking and (dis)acting behind this word are shown by Zabłocki as part of the penetrating diagnosis of the Polish reality of the last decades of the 18th century, characteristic of this writer, as well as in the perspective of the resulting threats to both Polish statehood and the morale of society.

    In the last phase of Franciszek Karpiński's life as a writer (the first quarter of the 19th century), he practically gave up poetry and concentrated instead on writing memoirs. This article tries to find out to what extent his autobiographical work, especially his Historia mego wieku i ludzi, z którymi żyłem [A History of My Century and the People with Whom I Lived], is influenced by an attitude characteristic of the sentimentalism of the previous century. As this analysis shows Karpiński's narrative exhibits both a sensitivity much indebted to Rousseau's autobiographical method and skilful shifts of tone, from satire and irony to various shades of melancholy. For sentimentalist aesthetic and poetics the continual manipulation of tone is a means of alerting the reader to the world's complexity. As in the novels of Lawrence Sterne, that complexity is experienced by way of careful observation of fragments of reality, defined by the subjectivity of the observer and the truth of his emotions.

    Opis:
    Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature is a fascinating area of research in past culture. It is still too early to claim comprehensive knowledge of it even though systematic work has been in progress for decades. The present issue of “Tematy i Konteksty” is the second collection of papers focused upon this current in old Polish literature. This issue is devoted to the relations of familiarity and universalism in Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature. The main emphasis in the papers has been placed upon the Brest Bible and biblical inspirations, homiletics and occasional literature, religious drama, religious confession, mysticism, meditation, religious prints and manuscripts.

    Words of Jan Albertrandi which he said in 1770, explaining the reasons for publishing the magazine ‘Zabawy Przyjemne i Pożyteczne’, expressed an enthusiasm about the possibility of achieving by Poles the state of the spiritual and intellectual maturity in a short time. The result of such attitude of the editor was his willingness to provide to potential readers of the magazine the entertainment meeting their expectations, characterizing post‑Sarmatian customs. Quite quickly however in ‘Zabawy…’ there appeared the opinions of people whose point of view was different than that one of Albertrandi, because of their critical assessment of the condition of Polish Enlightenment elites. Perhaps the most important of such voices was a text of very young poet Tomasz Kajetan Węgierski. The significance of his ode (About disrespect towards learned men) was largely the result of the fact that it was addressed to Adam Naruszewicz, not only one of the leading figures of the magazine from the very beginning of its existence but also the man being the favourite poet of King Stanisław August Poniatowski. The undertone of this work was harmonizing, paradoxically, to the meaning of numerous poems, also printed in that time in ‘Zabawy…’, directed against Bar confederates and written in the circle of people close to the king, like Antoni Korwin Kossakowski, the author of the poem entitled To the Nation and Posterity.
