    The author considers Polish surnames in Chehov‘s prose from two basic positions – formal and semantic. A Polish surname in Chehov always appears in an intense semantic context and involves ambivalent meanings. Nearly all Polish characters of his works are administrators, managers, or beautiful women. An important point is that a Polish surname in Chehov, regardless of the real national identity of its bearer, starts to function as a sign. Within this aspect, deep semantic structures of the text are involved. According to the author of the article, an adaptation of a foreign surname within the text to be received by the Russian linguistic consciousness is generally effected through an anagram and identification to sound structure of the text.

    У словниковому складі кожної мови існує певна кількість запозичених прізвищ, які відображають міжетнічні та міжмовні контакти. Метою статті було виявити і проаналізувати прізвища українців Східної Галичини, мотивовані власними польськими іменами, розглянути різні принципи їх класифікації. Джерелом дослідження послужили телефонні довідники Івано-Франківська, Львова, Тернополя. Вибірка становить 657 прізвищ, твірними для яких послужило 57 імен: 41 чоловіче та 16 жіночих. Більшість імен стала основою для утворення не одного, а багатьох прізвищ. Матеріали і результати дослідження можуть бути використані при написанні порівняльних праць з української та слов’янської ономастики, у дослідженнях із лексикології та історії мови.
    Surnames are an integral part of a person’s family identity and accompany a person throughout their life. The study of regional anthroponymy is the basis for dialectology, lexicography, etymology, word formation, and comparative linguistics. This paper considers various principles of classifi cation of surnames in general, and in particular it analyses surnames of Ukrainians from Eastern Galicia, motivated by their own Polish names. The source of the surnames was the telephone books of Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Ternopil. The sample consists of 657 surnames, out of which 57 names were used: 41 male and 16 female ones. Most names became the basis for the formation of not one but many surnames. The materials and results of the research can be used in writing comparative works on Ukrainian and Slavic onomastics, in research on lexicology and history of language.

    Opis:
    The article is devoted to the study of Polish and polonized surnames of the Yaroslavl region of Russia on the basis of a database formed from diverse documents of recent history, mostly modern authors. A range of sources of information about contemporary surname carriers is consecrated; an etymological analysis of the surnames is carried out, they are graded according to special features. The history of the repressiveness of the Soviet system in relation to the carriers of Polish surnames is traced. The conclusion is made about the strength of the essence and purpose of the foundations of Polish surnames as the most resistant element among the bearers of historical memory to the aggressive totalitarian environment.
    Статья посвящена изучению польских и полонизированных фамилий Ярославского региона России на основании базы данных, сформированной из разнородных документов новейшей истории, преимущественно современных автору. Освящается круг источников информации о современных носителях фамилий; проводится этимологический анализ фамилий, производится их градация по особым признакам. Прослеживается история репрессивности советской системы в отношении носителей польских фамилий. Делается вывод о прочности сущности и предназначения основ польских фамилий как наиболее стойкого элемента среди носителей исторической памяти к агрессивной тоталитарной среде.

    Przedmiotem artykułu są współczesne polskie nazwiska patronimiczne (z formantami -icz, -owicz/ -ewicz), które zawdzięczają pochodzenie (lub też mogą zawdzięczać) leksemom ormiańskim (zaliczam do nich również zarmenizowane antroponimy genetycznie obce). Pierwsi Ormianie – posługujący się językiem kipczackim – przybyli na ziemie polskie w XIV wieku. W XVIII wieku na Kresach Południowo-Wschodnich pojawiła się kolejna ormiańska fala migracyjna, przybysze posługiwali się dialektem należącym do grupy zachodnioormiańskiej. Otoczenie słowiańskie (polskie i ruskie – ukraińskie) wpływało na stopniową slawizację ormiańskich antroponimów: kipczackie leksemy czy ormiańskie sufiksy patronimiczne zastępowano słowiańskimi sufiksami patronimicznymi. W opracowaniu zawarto 57 antroponimów (ujętych w 25 hasłach słownikowych), które pochodzą (lub mogą pochodzić) od ormiańskich onimów.
    The main topic of this article are modern Polish patronymic surnames (with the suffixes -icz, -owicz/-ewicz), whose origins can be pointed to, or are owed to, Armenian lexemes (the author also encompasses Armenianised anthroponyms which are hereditarily foreign). The first Armenians‑who used the Kipchak language‑arrived in Polish lands in the 14th century. During the 18th century, in the South-Eastern Borderlands, a new Armenian wave of migrants arrived; the newcomers used to communicate in a dialect which belonged to the Western Armenian group of dialects. The Slavic surroundings they found themselves in (Polish and Ruthenian-Ukrainian) gradually influenced the Armenian anthroponyms: both Kipchak lexemes and Armenian patronymic suffixes were modified with Slavic patronymic suffixes. In this article, there are presented 57 anthroponyms (contained in 25 dictionary entries) which originate from, or may come from, Armenian proper nouns.

    The aim of the article is to present the attestations of contemporary Polish surnames of Lithuanian origin which are absent from the dictionary of Lithuanian surnames (“Lietuvių pavardžių žodynas”, LPŽ), excerpted from the anthroponymic index card files that have been stored in the Lithuanian Language Institute in Vilnius and continually enlarged for several decades now. The files contain data excerpted from historical sources of the 16th to 19th centuries and consist of about 200,000 index cards (the actual number of excerpted anthroponyms is lower since some recur in various sources). Due to space limitations, generally only directly attested names have been included in the article, to the exclusion of those whose relationship with the researched name can be inferred rather than considered proven. Each listed attestation of an anthroponym (probably not in all cases an already established hereditary surname) is accompanied by information concerning its location and year (or time bracket), wherever available in the card index file. Given names or other details (e.g. the role of the person mentioned in documents, such as godmother in the data excerpted from baptismal registers) have only been included occasionally, if there was some reason to do so.

    Adding to the lexical structure of Polish language, affecting its phonetics and morphology, Ukrainian language has also left its distinct mark in the formation of Polish anthroponymy. This is evident in the large number of Polish surnames with East Slavic (predominantly Ukrainian) elements recorded in the Roman Catholic parish register of the Galician region. Thus, identification of phenomenon of phonetic interference in Polish anthroponymy of Drohobych, analysis of phonetic influences of Ukrainian language on the formation of Polish surnames in Drohobych at the end of XVIII and beginning of XIX centuries is an important, interesting and hitherto little studied linguistic problem that are discussed in this article.
    Język ukraiński, zdaniem autorki artykułu, wywarł pewien wpływ na antroponimię polską. Uwidacznia się on m.in. w fakcie występowania licznych polskich nazwisk zawierających elementy wschodniosłowiańskie (przeważnie pochodzenia ukraińskiego), poświadczone w katolickich księgach metrykalnych z terenu Galicji. Autorka stwierdza, iż szczegółowa analiza polskich antroponimów z Drohobycza z końca XVIII – początku XIX wieku stanowi ważny, lecz słabo zbadany element szerszego zjawiska językowej interferencji polsko-ukraińskiej.

    Polish inflexional morphology, with its rich inventory of rules relating to noun declension, also involves surnames of foreign origin. Generally, these surnames should be inflected just as Polish common names or adjectives are, depending on the inflexional paradigm to which they belong. However, the declension of foreign nouns involves various complications of phonetic, orthographic, and, most of all, inflexional natures, not only because of a relatively high number of rules governing the Polish morphological system, but also because some of these rules have not yet been determined in a definitive manner and the declension itself, in some cases, is optional. For this reason, speakers of Polish, to avoid inflecting a given surname, often prefer to adopt various editorial strategies, so to speak; in their texts, however, we can still find numerous incorrect inflexional forms and inconsistent or outright wrong inflexional strategies. With this article, then, I intend to expose the detailed rules relating to the declension of Italian surnames in Polish and analyse the occurrences of these surnames in Polish texts that have appeared in Italica Wratislaviensia.
    La morfologia flessiva polacca, con il suo ricco inventario di regole relative alla declinazione sostantivale, coinvolge ugualmente i cognomi di provenienza straniera. In linea di massima, simili cognomi andrebbero declinati come nomi comuni o aggettivi polacchi, a seconda del paradigma flessivo cui appartengono. In realtà, la declinazione dei sostantivi stranieri comporta vari problemi di natura fonetica, ortografica e, soprattutto, flessiva, non solo per via di un numero relativamente alto di regole che governano il sistema morfologico polacco, ma anche perché alcune regole non sono state determinate in maniera definitiva e la stessa flessione, in alcuni casi, non è obbligatoria. In effetti, gli utenti della lingua polacca, per evitare di declinare un dato cognome, preferiscono spesso ricorrere a varie strategie redazionali. Nei loro testi non mancano, però, né forme sbagliate dei cognomi, né strategie flessive incoerenti o addirittura scorrette. Con il presente lavoro si intende, quindi, esporre in maniera possibilmente più dettagliata le regole relative alla declinazione dei cognomi italiani in lingua polacca insieme all’analisi delle occorrenze di tali cognomi nei testi polacchi apparsi su Italica Wratislaviensia.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza postaw i motywacji 100 litewskich Polaków, pochodzących głównie z homogenicznych kulturowo polskich rodzin, w zakresie oceny zapisu i zmian w zapisie nazw osobowych. Badanie ilościowe opiera się na analizie kwestionariusza świadomościowego przeprowadzonego wśród litewskich Polaków w wieku 34-70 lat. Niniejszy artykuł nie tylko nakreśla istniejące ramy prawne dotyczące tej kwestii, ale także wyjaśnia dominujące postawy mniejszości polskiej w odniesieniu do perspektywy zapisu nazwisk i imion litewskich mniejszości narodowych zgodnie z oryginalnym brzmieniem fonetycznym, aczkolwiek bez włączania znaków diakrytycznych. Analiza ankiet wykazała, że 57% respondentów wyraziło chęć do skorzystania z możliwości, jakie dają proponowane zmiany legislacyjne, podczas gdy 25% było przeciwnych zmianom. Wśród motywów skłaniających do zmian dominuje dążenie do zachowania i kultywowania języka polskiego. Niniejszy artykuł przyczynia się do głębszego zrozumienia dynamiki zmian tożsamościowych  w społeczeństwach wielokulturowych ze względu na stosunek do kwestii językowych.
    The article aims at analysing the attitudes and motivations of a group of 100 Lithuanian Poles, mainly from culturally homogeneous Polish families, regarding the evaluation of the spelling and the changes in the spelling of personal names. The quantitative study is based on the analysis of an awareness questionnaire conducted among Lithuanian Poles aged 34–70. This article not only outlines the existing legal framework on this issue, but also explains the dominant attitudes of the Polish minority towards the prospect of transcribing the surnames and first names of Lithuanian national minorities according to the original phonetic sound, albeit without the inclusion of diacritical marks. The analysis of the questionnaires showed that 57% of the respondents expressed their willingness to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the proposed legislative changes, while 25% were against the changes. Among the motivations for change, the desire to preserve and cultivate the Polish language dominated. This article contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of identity change in multi cultural societies with respect to atitudes towards language issues.

    Artykuł prezentuje pewne zjawiska fonetyczno-graficzne występujące w chińskich substytucjach polskich nazwisk. Praca koncentruje się na uproszczeniu zbitek spółgłoskowych w inicjalnych i finalnych sylabach polskich nazwisk. Z badanego materiału zostały zaczerpnięte liczne przykłady progresywnych i redukcyjnych zmian dźwiękowych. Typ progresywny zmian dźwiękowych obejmuje anaptyksę i paragogę. Zmiany redukcyjne to afereza, synkopa i apokopa. Materiał badawczy składa się z 668 polskich nazwisk oraz 778 ich wariantów adaptacyjnych, funkcjonujących w języku chińskim. Właściwe rozważania są poprzedzone teoretycznym opisem procesu adaptacji, a także głównych różnic między językami polskim i chińskim oraz systemami ich zapisu, które znacząco wpływają na ostateczny kształt powstających substytucji.
    The paper presents some phonetic-graphic phenomena occurring in the Chinese substitutions of Polish surnames. The work concentrates on simplification of the consonant clusters present in the initials and finals of the syllables constituting Polish family names. Numerous examples of sound additions and sound reductions have been excerpted from the examined material. The sound addition type of changes include anaptyxis and paragoge. The reductive changes are apheresis, syncope and apocope. The research material consists of 668 Polish surnames and their 778 adaptation variants, functioning in the Chinese language. The submitted deliberations are preceded with a theoretical description of the adaptation process, as well as of the main differences between Polish and Chinese and their writing systems, which significantly influence the final shape of the substitutions being created.

    The paper is based on the material contained in the ten-volume Dictionary of Names Used in Contemporary Poland, ed. by K. Rymut and in the Dictionary of Old-Polish Personal Names, ed. by W. Taszycki. It consists of three parts. In the first part consisting of such names as Rezmer (etc.) and Celmer (etc.), I reconstructs such old-Polish names as Redzimir (< Radzimir) and Żelimir; they are not confirmed in the SSNP. In the second part there are such names as Brommer, Kammer and Stammer, in the SSNO they are not confirmed; I interpret them as the effect of the respective reconstructed and abbreviated words, and thus confirmed directly or indirectly, the ancient two-element names like Bronimir, Kanimir and Stanimir. Finally, in the third part I devote space to such names as Cyrklaff (etc.) and Niecław (etc.). The name Cyrklaff is a graphic and phonetic transformation of the German name of the place Zirzlaff (Western Pomoria) with the historical inscriptions of the type Sillezlaw of 1335; this name is derived from the old-Polish Sulisław, noted from the twelfth century onward. The name Niecław I propose to derive from the name Niecisław, which has not been confirmed in the SSNO. Its forms, respectively reduced, would be contemporary names of the type Necel or Niec. The series of contemporary names Niecław − Necel − Niec would be somewhat analogical to such series of the contemporary names as e.g. Węcław − Wencel − Wenc.

There are representatives of the highest ranks and functions such as: Papież and Papierz (←papież ‘pope’), Kardynał (←kardynał ‘cardinal’), Metropolita (←metropolita ‘metropolitan bishop’), Patriarcha (←patriarcha “Patriarch”) and the representatives of the lowest ranks, such as: Wikary, Wikariusz (←wikary, wikariusz “curate”); function clergy such as: Proboszcz (←proboszcz ‘parish priest’), in German version Probst; honorary priests such as: Kanonik (← kanonik ‘canon’), Prałat (←prałat ‘prelate’); representatives of diocesan clergy such: Biskup, German Bischof (←biskup ‘bishop’) and monastic: Monach, Mnich (←monach, mnich ‘monk’), Opat (←opat ‘abbot’), Przeor (←przeor ‘pior’). Mostly they are Roman Catholic clergy, however, sometimes there are orthodox clergy, too: Władyka (←władyka ‘orthodox bishop’), Czerniec (←czerniec ‘orthodox monk’) and evangelical: Predigier (←predigier ‘preacher’). There is also one surname derived from a female rank: Ksieni (←ksieni ‘prioress’). Finally, the author shows which words naming clergy were not used to form Polish surnames. The choice of names is based on Dictionary of names currently used in Poland (Słownik imion współcześnie w Polsce używanych), vol. I-X, published by K. Rymut in Kraków, 1992-1994.

    Opis:
    Stefania (in the US: Stephanie Louise) Kwolek is an American chemist of Polish descent. Globally, she is primarily known as a co-inventor of kevlar, material used to manufacture, among other things, bulletproof vests. Numerous works dedicated to the life and achievements of the famous researcher point to doubts with regard to the spelling of her maiden name. According to certain publications, the name Kwolek is either an Americanised or a distorted Polish name Chwałek. The author of this article shows that both surnames have the same origin – Chwałek is a standard, literary form, and Kwolek is a dialectical form, compliant with the pronunciation in the dialects of south-eastern Poland. The form Kwolek started being used by the society in distant past, still before the official codification of surnames on the Polish territory. That was the name used by Stefania’s father at the time he emigrated to America, therefore, there is no reason to refer to him by the name Chwałek, even if the name Kwolek may seem less prestigious.

    Zaprezentowany artykuł stanowi zwięzły przegląd zjawisk o charakterze fonetycznym, które występują w chińskich adaptacjach nazwisk noszonych przez Polaków. W materiale badawczym odnaleziono liczne przykłady różnorodnych strategii językowych. Były to zmiany o charakterze rozszerzeniowym (anaptyksa, paragoga), zmiany redukcyjne (afereza, apokopa, synkopa), zmiany kolejności głosek (metateza) i substytucje dźwięków języka oryginału ich fonetycznie najbliższymi odpowiednikami w języku przejmującym nazwy własne.W pracy przedstawiono również proces adaptacji nazw własnych w kontaktach międzyjęzykowych oraz zjawisko powstawania licznych par nazw własnych, których źródłem są pojedyncze antroponimy.Na omówiony w artykule materiał badawczy złożyły się 123 nazwiska polskie i 325 ich wariantów substytucyjnych, które funkcjonują w języku chińskim.
    The submitted paper is a brief review of phonetic phenomena occurring in the Chinese adaptations of family names used by Polish people. Numerous instances of various linguistic strategies were found in the research material. These are: sound addition type of changes (anaptyxis, paragoge), sound reduction type of changes (apheresis, apocope, syncope), sound order changes (metathesis), as well as substitutions of the original sounds with their phonetically closest counterparts existing in the integrating language.The present deliberations pertain also to the onymic lexical units adaptation process occurring in the course of interlanguange contacts, as well as to a phenomenon of formation of numerous proper name pairs based upon a single anthroponym.The research material consists of 123 Polish surnames and their 325 substitution variants being used in the Chinese language.

    The authors discuss the main premises of the project “The most popular surnames in Poland — past  and present. E-dictionary” which has been in development since July 2014 in IJP PAN in Krakow.  They also present its basic aims and functions, progress already made and they compare it with  other dictionaries of surnames. The authors describe several aspects of the dictionary related to IT and computers but also those concerned with onomastics and lexicography. Additionally, they pay particular attention to the information contained in specific parts of each entry .
