J. Brodsky’s poem Predstavlenije presents no semantic difficulties for a Russian reader, but attempts to translate it into foreign languages have not always been successful due to a large number of references to Soviet reality and intertextual links found in the text. The present article is devoted to the comparative analysis of three translations of this poem: those done by Thomas Campbell and Alexandra Berlina (both into the English language) as well as one created by Jerzy Czech (into the Polish language).

The subject matter of the article is a comparison of Charles Bauelaire's poem Femmes damnées (Damned) and its two translations by Kazimiera Zawistowska and Bohdan Wydżga. Although Zawistowska's literary work is not as accurate to the French original as Wydżga's, it surpasses it in artistic terms. The description of the differences resulting from different poetic sensibilities of the writers and their gender involvement is preceded by brief information about context-appropriate, contemporary translational theories of the possible ways of shaping relations between original and translated works.
Tematem artykułu stało się porównanie wiersza Charlesa Bauelaire’a Femmes damnées (Potępione) oraz jego dwu tłumaczeń: autorstwa Kazimiery Zawistowskiej i Bohdana Wydżgi. Opis różnic, wynikających z odmiennej wrażliwości poetyckiej tłumaczy oraz ich uwikłań genderowych, zostaje poprzedzony krótką informacją na temat wpisanych w kontekst współczesnych teorii przekładoznawczych sposobów kształtowania relacji między dziełem oryginalnym i tłumaczonym. Choć utwór Zawistowskiej nie jest tak wierny francuskiemu oryginałowi jak tekst Wydżgi, to przewyższa go pod względem artystycznym. Przyjęte w artykule tło badań kulturowych, w którego obrębie istotną rolę zyskuje kategoria płci, umożliwia odnalezienie w przekładzie młodopolskiej poetki typowej dla tej twórczości specyfiki „głosu kobiecego”. Jej wersję tłumaczenia można uznać za rodzaj manifestu kobiecej seksualności i kobiecych doświadczeń ciała, zmysłowej miłości oraz cierpienia.

W artykule przedstawiono strategie tłumaczenia poezji polskiej Antona Marii Raffo (1937-2018), jednego z najwybitniejszych włoskich tłumaczy literatury polskiej. W swoim nieustannym dążeniu do reprodukcji metrum i, w miarę możliwości, rymów, odróżniał się od dominujących trendów przekładu poezji we Włoszech, zalecając stosowanie – i nadużywanie – wiersza wolnego nawet w poezji metrycznej i rymowanej. Raffo tłumaczył poetów, którzy nadal posługiwali się tradycyjną wersyfikacją, jak Jan Kochanowski (prawdziwym arcydziełem jest jego przekład Pieśni – Ody Kochanowskiego), Adam Mickiewicz czy Bolesław Leśmian, ale także poeci XX wieku, jak Czesław Miłosz, Zbigniew Herbert czy Wisława Szymborska, wśród których wybrał i przetłumaczył wiersze, które wykazują pewną prawidłowość metryczną. Strategię Raffo wykorzystało kilku innych tłumaczy polskiej poezji we Włoszech.
The article presents the strategies adopted in translating Polish poetry by Anton Maria Raffo (1937–2018), one of the most outstanding Italian translators of Polish literature. In his constant striving to reproduce the metre and, whenever possible, the rhymes, he distinguished himself from the dominating trends of poetry translation in Italy, prescribing the use – and abuse – of vers libre even for metrical and rhymed poetry. Raffo translated poets who still used traditional versification like Jan Kochanowski (a true masterpiece is his translation of Kochanowski’s Pieśni – Odes), Adam Mickiewicz or Bolesław Leśmian, but also XXth-century poets like  Czesław Miłosz, Zbigniew Herbert or Wisława Szymborska, among whose works he selected and translated the poems which present a certain metrical regularity. A.M. Raffo’s lesson was followed by several other translators of Polish poetry in Italy.

El objetivo principal de esta investigación es estudiar la conexión entre el interés hacia la traducción de la poesía vanguardista rusa de la Edad de Plata (aproximadamente el periodo entre el año 1892 y los años 30 del siglo XX) y las características de los procesos histórico-sociales en los países del idioma meta. Se habla de diferentes formas de definir el término vanguardismo en el contexto literario ruso y se ofrece, siguiendo la propuesta de los investigadores rusos Valeri Tyupa (Тюпа 1991, 1998) y Serguei Biryukov (Бирюков 2001), determinar este a través del análisis discursivo. Se estudia el reflejo de un cambio brusco en una cultura (como fue el proceso político-sociocultural de principios del siglo XX en Rusia) a través de la literatura y sobre todo a través de la poesía de este periodo y sus posteriores traducciones en otra cultura y otro entorno social, analizando la dinámica de la traducción de diferentes poetas: Mayakovski, Blok, Krúchenikh, Jlébnikov, Tsvetaeva… La recepción de estos textos poéticos en los países hispanohablantes se estudia como la asimilación de los textos culturales, analizando las causas de la aparición de la demanda social para traducir uno u otro texto vanguardista. Se estudian los porqués de las traducciones clásicas realizadas por Cesar Arconada, Nicanor Parra y otras importantísimas figuras de la poesía de habla hispana, así como por traductores profesionales (José Fernández Sánchez, Selma Ancira, etc.) y aficionados, demostrando la inevitable existencia de una demanda sociocultural de determinadas características para que la traducción literaria sea posible.
The main objective of this paper is to study the connection between the interest in the translation of the Russian avant-garde poetry of the Silver Age (approximately the period between the year 1892 and the 1930s) and the characteristics of the historical and social processes in the target language countries. The paper evaluates different ways of defining the term avant-garde in the Russian literary context, and then offers, following the proposal of the Russian researchers Valeri Tyupa and Serguei Biryukov, to determine this phenomenon through discourse analysis. The reflection of a sudden change in one culture (as it was the political-sociocultural process of the early 20th century in Russia) which influenced the literature and especially the poetry of this period and their subsequent translations, is considered in another culture and another social environment by analyzing the dynamics of translation of different poets, such as Mayakovsky, Blok, Kruchenykh, Khlebnikov and Tsvetaeva. The reception of these poetic texts in Spanish-speaking countries is studied as the assimilation of cultural texts, regarding the causes of social demand to translate one or another avant-garde text. Finally, the social causes of translation are considered through studying the works of Cesar Arconada, Nicanor Parra and other important figures of Spanish language poetry, as well as translations made by professional translators (José Fernández Sánchez, Selma Ancira, etc.) and amateurs. It is demonstrated that the existence of a sociocultural demand of certain characteristics is necessary to make the literary translation possible.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the literary translations of three Polish-language sonnets by Yanka Kupala into Belarusian, Russian and English, performed by V. Markhel, N. Kislik and V. Rich. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the specifics of Yanka Kupala's sonnet forms and the description of translation solutions to preserve the form and content of the original, to adequately convey the culturally marked vocabulary. It is shown that the com¬parative analysis of the original texts with their translations contributes to the awareness of the quality and level of the poetic skills of the author and translators, and to understanding of the problems of poetic translation.
W artykule rozważa się cechy charakterystyczne przekładu artystycz¬nego trzech sonetów polskojęzycznych Janki Kupały na język białoruski, rosyjski i angielski. Podejmowane są zagadnienia odrębności form sonetowych J. Kupały oraz specyfiki strategii tłumaczeniowych U. Marchela, N. Kislika i W. Rycz w sto¬sunku do zachowywania formy i treści oryginału, przekładu elementów nacechowanych kulturowo, w szczególności realiów. Stwierdza się, że analiza porównawcza tekstów źródłowych i ich tłumaczeń sprzyja uświadomieniu jakości przekładów, wysokości poetyckiego kunsztu twórcy i oryginalności jego poezji oraz rozważaniu problemów przekładu poetyckiego pod względem zachowania cech artystycznych i językowych.
У артыкуле разглядаюцца асаблівасці мастацкага перакладу трох поль-скамоўных санетаў Я. Купалы (Беларус, Гэй, у свет! і Зямля) на беларускую, рускую і англійскую мовы. Асэнсоўваюцца пытанні адметнасці санетных форм Я. Купалы і спецыфікі перакладчыцкіх падыходаў У. Мархеля, Н. Кіслі¬ка і В. Рыч у дачыненні да захавання формы і зместу арыгінала, перадачы культурна-маркіраванай лексікі, у прыватнасці, перакладу рэалій. Сцвяр-джаецца, што параўнальны аналіз арыгінальных тэкстаў з перакладнымі спрыяе ўсведамленню якасці і вышыні паэтычнага майстэрства творцы і перакладчыкаў, разуменню самабытнасці паэзіі Я. Купалы, асэнсаванню праблем паэтычнага перакладу ў кантэксце захавання яго мастацкіх і моў-ных якасцяў.

The article discusses problems connected with the strategy of dialect translation of lyrics by S. Yesenin into the Polish language. The author of the article shows the most important functions, which dialects serve in lyrics, and analyses the strategy that are the most frequently employed in their translation. The results of the investigation show the following distinctive features of transferring dialect from Russian to the Polish language: translators usually decide to replace dialect with neutral lexis or they give up translating dialect at all. As a consequence of such decisions, two phenomena can be observed: changes in the pragmatics of language function and impoverishment of the author’s poetic language.

Artykuł skupia się na transformacjach w zakresie obrazowania poetyckiego w tłumaczeniach wierszy Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza dokonanych przez Dmytra Pawłyczkę. Analiza porównawcza tekstów wierszy i przekładów ukazuje liczne przykłady transformacji obrazów poetyckich wynikających z niewłaściwego odczytania przez tłumacza odniesień kulturowych, prób oddania rymu lub błędnej interpretacji sensów oryginału.
У статті розглянуто трансфомації у сфері поетичного образотворення в перекладах поетичних текстів Ярослава Івашкевича, здійснених Дмитром Павличком. Порівняльний аналіз текстів віршів і фрагментів поем та їхніх перекладів демонструє численні приклади трансформації поетичних образів, що є наслідком хибної інтерпретації перекладачем культурних референцій і сенсів оригінальних текстів, а також намагання відтворити римування оригіналу.
The paper focuses on the transformations of poetic imagery in Dmytro Pavlychko’s translations of poetic works by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. The comparative analysis of the original poems and their translations shows numerous examples of shifts in imagery caused by the translator’s misinterpretation of cultural references and the senses conveyed by the original works, as well as his attempts to follow the original rhyme pattern.

This article discusses a collection of fifty psalms published as The Poznań Psalter. A Collection of Psalms for Common Singing at Home and in Church (Poznań 2017). As a text genre, the publication represents a song book, which – according to its dictionary definition – is: ‘a collection of songs (solemn or popular) with their lyrics and notes’. The publication can alternatively be classified as a hymnal. The authors of the paraphrased psalter intended to underscore the musical character of the Biblical texts. This musical character is underscored by giving the particular psalms their regular rhythmic pattern, partly supported with a rhyming pattern. As far as the musical layer of the Poznań Psalter is concerned, the authors make a conscious reference to tradition, since the melodic lines are transferred from the Geneva Psalter (1563 edition). The language layer, on the other hand, departs from tradition, since it does not exhibit the historically marked lexical or grammatical structures. Analysing the text of the Poznań Psalter, composed by the Protestant (Reformed Evangelical Church) authors in the context of the Polish tradition of Biblical translation, one can conclude that this tradition retains its vital interdenominational nature, which – as in the case in point – is capable of using the Warsaw Bible and the Millennium Bible as sources of textual adaptation.

A poetic cycle is a specific case of poetic contextualisation and for translators this means additional efforts in identifying the micro- and macro-level network of functional and semantic links. Joseph Brodsky’s cycle A Part of Speech represents a highly conceptual approach and strong integration of each and every poem. In this context the paper briefly outlines different types of micro- and macroscopic approaches to poetry translation. Further practical analysis of some translation issues observed in the respective English and Latvian translations show that decisions of poetry translators are informed by different backgrounds in the author-text-reader relationships. Artistic creativity is certainly present in the translation activity but this does not mean that a completely independent target text is produced.

The article deals with Jan Kochanowski’s Psałterz Dawidów [David’s Psalter], published in 1579. This paraphrase of the biblical Psalter, intensely lyrical in its spirit, was inspired by George Buchanan’s Latin poetic paraphrase of the Psalms, which is strongly Horatianising. Kochanowski’s work can be seen as a presentation of humanist piety. That is to say that the borders between secular and sacred spaces, or even between Judeo-Christian and Pagan traditions, may seem blurred. The Psalter is also interconfessional (or “doctrinally neutral”) and acts as a universal mirror reflecting the human mind. The author analyses three of Kochanowski’s Psalms to demonstrate the intellectual and emotional space of his Psalter and its polyphonic structure: 1 (Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum), 19 (Caeli enarrant gloriam Dei) and 91 (Qui habitat in adiutorio Altissimi), displaying some interplays of ideas and different approaches to paraphrasing applied by the poet.

The contemporary phase of the investigation of the religious sources of Taras Shevchenko’s art is not a well analysed aspect of literature studies, even though Biblical motifs in the works of this Ukrainian poet are still an inexhaustible source for literary research. The works of Taras Shevchenko contributed to the artistic embodiment of the Christian topography and inspired the artistic interpretation of the basics of patristics. Nowadays the topic of the Bible and Shevchenko is analysed in its interconnected aspects: general cultural, hermeneutic, linguistic, discourse and sociological, identification and descriptive, comparative, intersemiotic, religious, etc. On the basis of the reception strategies of translation studies as part of comparative studies and cultural approaches, embracing the wide circle of social codes, conventions and representations, the article focuses on the typology of Shevchenko’s poetic adaptations of psalms in the context of Ukrainian literature, and religious, ceremonial and spiritual traditions.

The article has been derived from a chapter of an MA thesis on everyday speech in Miron Białoszewski’s work. The text focuses on exposition of methodological assumptions - the notion of everyday speech and its translation into poetic language in Białoszewski’s works. In particular, the article discusses a series of non-professional translations of the poem UFO agent’s skipping rope into German, as an example of the functioning of the dominant of everyday speech in translations of Białoszewski’s poetry.

W roku 1924 nakładem Biblioteki Narodowej ukazał się tom powieści poetyckich Goerge’a Byrona w opracowaniu Andrzeja Tretiaka. We wstępie oraz licznych przypisach Tretiak uzasadnił wybór konkretnych przekładów i uszeregował je pod względem jakości, jednocześnie wskazując na błędy tłumaczy oraz pozostawione przez nich naddatki. Badacz skupił się również na ocenie wybieranych przez tłumaczy rozwiązań, czasami zamieszczając dla porównania własne wersje niektórych fragmentów. Artykuł prezentuje krytyczną analizę komentarzy Tretiaka do dwóch przekładów: Korsarza i Lary, prowadzącą do weryfikacji tezy badacza, według której najlepszym polskim tłumaczem Byrona był Julian Korsak, a najgorszym – Antoni Edward Odyniec.
In 1924, the Polish National Library published Andrzej Tretiak’s edition of George Byron’s tales in verse. In the introduction and numerous footnotes, Tretiak explained why specific translations were selected and ranked them in terms of quality, pointing out the mistakes and the changes made by the translators. Tretiak also evaluated the solutions chosen by the translators, at times comparing them with his own translations. The article presents a critical analysis of Tretiak’s comments to two translations, “The Corsair” and “Lara,” which allowed him to conclude that the best Polish translator of Byron was Julian Korsak, and the worst, Antoni Edward Odyniec.
