Opis:
Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is one of the most widely consumed mushrooms in the world. Its spores are highly potent allergens, but their main allergen, Pleo, has so far been very rarely reported. In indoor farms, fungal spores are often found to be floating in the air. This study presents a case of a non-atopic, healthy 32-year-old woman who opened an oyster mushroom farm with her husband. During the first harvest, after 30-minute exposure, she experienced dyspnoea. Similar symptoms occurred several more times while on the farm. A month later, during packing and sorting mushrooms, after 10 min, she again felt dyspnea, accompanied by weakness, rapid pulse, and skin itching with urticaria which occurred on her forearms. Immediately after one of the exposures to oyster mushrooms, spirometry was performed. The results showed a reduced airflow obstruction. Standard skin prick tests with an inhalant and food allergens were also performed – all rendering negative results. The diagnosis also included a prick-to-prick test with oyster mushrooms (a wheal size of 12 mm), this time with a positive result. Increased total IgE (78 iu/ml) in the serum was recorded. On the basis of her medical history, reported symptoms and diagnostic tests, the patient could be diagnosed with occupational anaphylaxis and work-related asthma. A constant exposure of indoor mushroom cultivators to Pleurotus ostreatus spores increases the risk of respiratory allergy development. An environmental monitoring of oyster mushroom spores is reasonable in the industry, as it may prove useful in the prevention of the disease.

Opis:
Studies were carried out to investigate cultivation of some indigenous edible mushrooms in Anambra State. The most suitable substrates for cultivation of Pleurotus tuberregium and Volvariella volvacea were also investigated. Spawn of V. volvacea was obtained from the Department of Life Science, University of Benin, Edo State and sclerotia of P. Tuberregium purchased from Eke Awka Market, Anambra State were used for this study. Plantain leaves and oil palm bunch wastes were substrates employed for V. volvacea whereas topsoil was used for P. tuberregium cultivation. The methods used were site preparation, substrate preparation, soil preparation, sclerotia preparation, cultivation of sclerotia, irrigation, spawn cultivation and harvesting of mushrooms. Means were analyzed statistically using (ANOVA) to test for significance. Means were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Tests (DMRT).The highest number of fruit bodies of V. volvacea, 312.68 was obtained from plantain leaves on day 2 after primordial emergence whereas the least, 21.00 was recorded from oil palm bunch wastes on days 6 and 14, respectively. The highest number of P. tuberregium, 61.58 was recorded on day 12 after primordial emergence while the least, 20.49 was recorded on days 7, 13 and 14, respectively. All the three substrates utilized for cultivation of mushrooms in this study supported their growth and development. Plantain leaves supported fast colonization and produced high yield fruit bodies of V. volvacea. The ability to use agricultural wastes for cultivation of mushrooms will boost food production for ever increasing population.

Opis:
Plant material obtained by pruning and production of deciduous fruit trees was evaluated as substrates for the production of the oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. Lignified branches and stems from peach, apple, and pear trees were processed using a ripping machine to reduce the size of chips and to optimize disinfection. A completely randomized experimental design was proposed with six treatments (novel substrates) and one absolute control (100% hay substrate). Morphological variables such as thickness and diameter of the pileus, stipe length were assessed, as well as production variables (sprouting, fresh weight, and biological efficiency) and bromatological analysis (ash, ethereal extract, crude fiber, and crude protein). Apart from the 100%-hay substrate, biological efficiency ranged between 27% (100% apple tree as the substrate) and 140% (50% hay + 50% peach tree as the substrate). According to morphological analysis, the highest diameters were recorded from mixed substrates (50% hay + 50% wood), and a highly significant positive correlation was found between diameter and stipe length. Morphological parameters were not significantly correlated with biological efficiency. Analysis of biological efficiency confirmed that mixed substrates clustered together with 100%-wood substrates. Bromatological analysis showed that the mixed substrate (50% hay + 50% pear tree) had the highest protein content among the novel tested substrates. Bromatological parameters were not significantly correlated with biological efficiency. In conclusion, pruning residues from fruit trees can be valuable by using them as substrates for the cultivation of P. ostreatus. Production is quantitatively competitive with that using hay, on the condition that wood is mixed with hay.

Opis:
Humans have used mushrooms from the beginning of their history. However, during the last few decades, the market demand for these fruiting bodies has increased significantly owing to the spread in the capabilities of culinary and pharmacological exploitation. Natural mushroom resources have become insufficient to meet the support needs. Therefore, traditional methods of extensive cultivation as well as modern technologies have been exploited to develop effective growing recommendations for dozens of economically important mushroom species. Mushrooms can decompose a wide range of organic materials, including organic waste. They play a fundamental role in nutrient cycling and exchange in the environment. The challenge is a proper substrate composition, including bio-fortified essential elements, and the application of growing conditions to enable a continuous supply of fruiting bodies of market quality and stabilized chemical composition. Many mushroom species are used for food preparation. Moreover, they are treated as functional foods, because they have health benefits beyond their nutritional value, and are used as natural medicines in many countries. Owing to the rapid development of mushroom farming, we reviewed the growing technologies used worldwide for mushroom species developed for food, processing, and pharmacological industries.

Opis:
Mushrooms of the Pleurotus genus are found naturally in forests in almost all latitudes where they are responsible for the decomposition of wood. These fungi are valuable to cultivate and eat, as they are source of valuable nutrients and healing ingredients. Mycelium of white rot is known for its bioremediation abilities, including the accumulation of heavy metals and chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons. Mushrooms of the Pleurotus genus have also been found applicable in the biotransformation of unsaturated terpenoid compounds. These reactions involve hydroxylation at the allyl position and subsequent oxidation of the introduced hydroxyl group. The article presents a number of applications of various strains of fungi of the Pleurotus genus.

Opis:
The present study was focused on the technical feasibility of using immobilized hybrid biomass of Pleurotos sajor-caju and sunflower for Pb(II) removal from the contaminated water. After preliminary evaluation, it was found that immobilized hybrid biomass of Pleurotos sajor-caju and sun-flower effectively removed Pb(II) from wastewater at pH 4.5. The effect of various experimental parameters on Pb(II) uptake by hybrid biosorbent was systematically evaluated in a batch biosorption system. The optimized biosorbent dose, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature were 0.05 g/100 cm 3, 180 min, 800 mg/dm3 and 60 °C. Dynamics of the adsorption process were studied, and the values of rate constants of pseudo first order and pseudo second order kinetic models were calculated. Equilibrium isotherms for the adsorption of Pb(II) were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The sorption of Pb(II) followed the pseudo second order kinetic model. The Langmuir sorption isotherm fitted well to Pb(II) concentration data. The results revealed that this new hybrid biosorbent system was a promising candidate for eliminating Pb(II) from contaminated aquatic environment.

Materiał do badań stanowiły krakersy kukurydziane i chleb pszenny uzyskane z wypieku laboratoryjnego. Zawartość białka, tłuszczu, suchej masy i związków mineralnych w postaci popiołu oznaczono standardowymi metodami analitycznymi.
Dried oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a raw material used, to a very limited extent, as an additive to food products. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of dried oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) added on nutritional value and glycemic index of crackers and bread. The research material consisted of corn crackers and wheat bread baked in a laboratory. The content of protein, fat, dry mass and mineral compounds in the form of ash were determined using standard analytical methods. The content of fibre fractions was determined according to a Van Soest method. The glycemic index (GI) was determined as a percent growth rate of glucose concentration in the blood of people examined after they have eaten particular food products compared to the growth thereof after consumption of glucose. Based on the experiments conducted, it was found that the dried oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus added to crackers and bread enhanced their nutritive value. In those products, there were determined higher contents of protein, insoluble and soluble dietary fibre, and cellulose. The products with the oyster mushroom added were characterized by a lower glycemic index compared to the products without this additive.

The purification protocol comprised ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, CM-cellulose, and Q-Sepharose, and gel filtration on Superdex 75. The laccase was adsorbed on DEAE-cellulose and Q-Sepharose, but not on CM-cellulose. It demonstrated an optimal temperature of 70°C. The enzyme activity increased steadily over the temperature range 20°C-70°C. There was only a slight reduction in activity at 80°C. However, all activity disappeared following exposure to 100°C for 10 minutes. The enzyme activity changed only slightly over the pH range 3-5, with the optimum at pH 5, but underwent a precipitous decline when the pH was elevated to 6, and was undetectable at pH 8 and pH 9.

The role of fungi in the treatment of wastewater has been extensively researched. Many genera of fungi have been employed for the dye decolourization either in living or dead form. In this study, the removal of an acidic dye, Indigo Carmine (IC), from an aqueous solution by biosorption on dead fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus, was investigated. The effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, amount of dead biomass, agitation rate and initial pH on dye removal have been determined. Experimental results show that an increase in the amount of dead biomass positively affected the dye removal. The highest removal was obtained at 150–200 rpm. Slightly lower removing activities were found at lower agitation rates. The dye adsorption effi ciency was not affected by pH except minor variation in the pH of 2–8. Color removal was observed to occur rapidly within 60 minutes. The removal of dye by dead biomass of P. ostreatus was clearly dependent on the initial dye concentration of the solution. Dye removal was reduced from 93% to 64% as concentration was increased from 50 to 500 mg/L Indigo Carmine. This study showed that it was possible to remove textile dyes by dead biomass of P. ostreatus.
