Opis:
Somatic seeds of Plantago asiatica L. were produced for the first time. Shoot-tips isolated from in vitro obtained 4-week shoots were encapsulated using sodium alginate and calcium chloride. Capsules with or without sucrose and with and without cytokinin - indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) were used. Sucrose presence in capsules very distinctly influences somatic seeds of Plantago asiatica germination and their conversion into plants. However, addition of IBA to capsules has not clear influence on the ability of plant regrowth. Plantlets transplanted to soil grew to phenotypically normal plants.

Regenerated cellulose was prepared from plantain pseudo stem obtained in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The pulp prepared with 12% NaOH had moisture content of 8.8% and a yield of 36.9% on the average. The pulp was bleached and exposed to air to form “white crumbs”. The aged crumbs was mixed with carbon disulphide at a controlled temperature of 30 °C to form cellulose xanthate (C6H9O4–S–SNa)n. This was then converted to regenerated cellulose by way of further treatment with tetraoxosulphate (VI) acid at a yield of 36.4%. This work has revealed that plantain pseudo stem waste can be converted to regenerated cellulose for diverse applications.

Opis:
Micropropagation of Plantago media L. and the presence of phenolic compounds in organs of multiplied plants were investigated for the first time. Multiplication of plant material was achieved in shoot-tip cultures and via direct organogenesis on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with four variants of plant growth regulators (M1–M4). The best multiplication coefficient – 9.2 was obtained in seedling shoot-tip cultures on MS medium M3 with BA 0.2 mg/L and IAA 1.0 mg/L. Methanol extracts prepared separately from shoots and roots of in vitro- derived plantlets were found to contain typical of the genus Plantago L. phenylethanoid glycosides as the only phenolics. Acteoside and plantamajoside were the major compounds – both known to possess a wide range of promising biological activities applicable for medicinal (therapeutic) and cosmetic uses. Martynoside, as a trace constituent, was also found for the first time in the studied species. The quantitative screening of the extracts by TLC video densitometric method showed a higher content of acteoside in shoots (range 62.43–93.03 mg/g, dry weight) and plantamajoside in roots (range 22.45–44.08 mg/g); the highest recorded values – 93.03 mg/g and 44.08 mg/g, respectively, were found in the organs obtained on MS medium M4 with BA 2.0 mg/L.

Opis:
Pathogenicity and ultrastructural investigation of the ribwort leaves inoculated with Phyllosticta plantaginis conidia was undertaken using scanning electron microscopy to examine the host-parasite relationship. Pathogenicity experiments demonstrated that all tested P. plantaginis isolates had infected leaves of ribwort. Of all inoculation methods, direct placement of colonized agar plugs on damaged epidermis and soaking leaves in conidial suspension were the most effective. The behavior of the conidia deposited on the leaves was investigated at different time intervals after inoculation: 7, 18, 25, 48 and 72 h. An appressorium appeared directly at the end of a short germ tube grown from conidia. Appressoria were formed over the cuticle in some distance from the stomata. Penetration through the stomata was observed.

Opis:
The effects of climate change on agriculture may have strong impacts on the world’s food economy and are likely to threaten both the welfare of the world’s population and the economic development of the global society. Hence, the impacts of changes in important climate variables like temperature, rainfall and relative humidity on the production of a major food commodity called banana is investigated using the data obtained within 1998-2012 from Ondo State, Nigeria. The results suggest that excessive rainfall and extremely high temperature can reduce banana productivity while the production is also small when both rainfall and temperature are very low with poor humidity. On the average, the findings show that a mean temperature of about 26 °C and average rainfall of around 1891mm with relative humidity of approximately 77% will lead to good annual banana production above 61,000 tons in Ondo State. Since these climate variables will fluctuate under a future climate change condition, the coping strategies recommended for farmers in the area and in similar places might include planting of drought- and disease resistant banana types, monitoring of weather conditions, use of irrigation and chemicals. Improved storage facilities are also important while transportation of banana should be done under controlled conditions to avoid spoiling the quality.

Opis:
Diabetes, adjudged a risk factor for coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19), can be managed through consumption of plantain and its associated products. Plantain is usually processed into flour and other storable/value-added products due to its very short shelf-life. To process unripe plantain pulps into flour, there is a need for size reduction after drying. This paper presents the development and performance evaluation of a size reduction unit for pulverizing, sieving and conveying material to the next processing stage in a plantain flour process plant. Its model was developed using solidworks application software. After design analysis, the model was simulated to establish its suitability/adequacy for fabrication. The pulverizer was fabricated using locally available materials. Its performance evaluation gave 400kg/h throughput, 96% crushing efficiency and 96% efficiency based on the required particle size. The average particle size of flour obtained was 236μm using 500μm screen. Effect of cyclone control-valve on the pulverizer’s overall efficiency was also investigated by allowing it to operate when the valve was completely closed, partially closed and fully opened. It was observed that the control-valve’s positions significantly influenced the machine’s performance/efficiency. It can thus be inferred that the position of cyclone control-valve has significant effect on a pulverizer’s efficiency/performance. Hence, leaving control-valve fully opened during operation would help a pulverizer perform with optimum efficiency, as the pulverizer was able to convey material, efficiently in that position, to the next processing stage during performance evaluation.

The ultrastructure of two lines of nonmorphogenic Plantago asiatica callus was compared. The ultrastructure of most organelles of cream-coloured and green-coloured lines of these callus lines was similar. Among the plastides no difference in prevalence and composition of proplastides and amyloplasts was observed. The main difference lies in the presence of chlororoplasts in green callus. The phenomena of vacuolisation and tracheogenesis in both lines were found.

Opis:
Studies were carried out to investigate cultivation of some indigenous edible mushrooms in Anambra State. The most suitable substrates for cultivation of Pleurotus tuberregium and Volvariella volvacea were also investigated. Spawn of V. volvacea was obtained from the Department of Life Science, University of Benin, Edo State and sclerotia of P. Tuberregium purchased from Eke Awka Market, Anambra State were used for this study. Plantain leaves and oil palm bunch wastes were substrates employed for V. volvacea whereas topsoil was used for P. tuberregium cultivation. The methods used were site preparation, substrate preparation, soil preparation, sclerotia preparation, cultivation of sclerotia, irrigation, spawn cultivation and harvesting of mushrooms. Means were analyzed statistically using (ANOVA) to test for significance. Means were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Tests (DMRT).The highest number of fruit bodies of V. volvacea, 312.68 was obtained from plantain leaves on day 2 after primordial emergence whereas the least, 21.00 was recorded from oil palm bunch wastes on days 6 and 14, respectively. The highest number of P. tuberregium, 61.58 was recorded on day 12 after primordial emergence while the least, 20.49 was recorded on days 7, 13 and 14, respectively. All the three substrates utilized for cultivation of mushrooms in this study supported their growth and development. Plantain leaves supported fast colonization and produced high yield fruit bodies of V. volvacea. The ability to use agricultural wastes for cultivation of mushrooms will boost food production for ever increasing population.
