Opis:
Mutation research has given an insight into the rather complex genetics of kernel rows in barley. At least 12 gene loci can act to promote the spike development, fertility, and kernel development. Mutants with such effects as sixrow and intermedium phenotypes show clear morphological distinctions among different loci, but also among different allelic mutants. These genes, without exception, are capable of unexpected synergistic reinforcing or disturbing intraction, the extremes being typically six-rowed or deformed spikes, respectively. The investigations have centered on 69 intermedium mutants, representing 9 loci, in double mutant combinations, in double combinations with the six-row gene hex-v, in triple combinations with hex-v, and in triple and quadruple mutant combinations. The effects of the interaction may differ among the three characters of lateral floret development, among intermedium loci, and among alleles of the particular locus. Particular types of gene interaction are indicated, particular loci being more competent than others, and the particular alleles being more competent in relation to the constellation of loci. Accumulation of intermedium genes in more complex gene systems leads to progressive promotion of lateral floret development, but there are indications that such systems may be more sensitive to environmental stress, leading to irregular or even deformed spike formation. Probably, representatives of the hex-v locus should form the fundamental constituent in the synthesis of gene systems with the most efficient promotion of lateral floret development in the breeding of six-row barley.

Multivariate characterization of breeding value and evaluation of genetic divergence in five blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) varieties are presented. In the study general combining ability effects (GCA) estimated over two years in a full-diallel cross design (Griffing’s method 1) for fruit yield per plant, yield-contributing traits and resistance traits have been elaborated. The multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) according to the fixed Griifing’s model and canonical variate analysis for GCA effects have been used. The suggested statistical approach delivers information for two known and commonly accepted criterions of successful selecting parents for crosses in breeding programs, both multivariate estimates of GCA effects of parents and their genetic distances, here based on multivariate GCA effects. GCA effects for fruit yield per plant, bush vigour, spring frost damage to flowers, infestation by white pine blister rust and powdery mildew had the largest discrimination power in multivariate GCA divergence of the parents. It was proved that the breeding value of potential parents regarding productivity attributes could be the predominant criterion of proper parents selecting for crosses in blackcurrant breeding. Genetic distance evaluated on the basis of multivariate GCA effects has not been a powerful predictor of progenies productivity. The paper is thought mainly as experimental, methodological study on effective using and usefulness of the suggested statistical procedure in researches for plant breeding purposes. The showed results could be also meaningful for blackcurrant breeding.

We have investigated genetic diversity and the mating system of Scots pine plus trees from the Tuchola Forests – Poland, using allozymes as genetic markers. The studied plus trees possess high genetic diversity (expected heterozygosity He = 0.427) and low inbreeding (Wright’s index F = –0.028), which is comparable to Scots pine trees observed in other studies in natural populations and seed orchards. The mating system analyses revealed that almost all offspring produced by the plus trees were due to outcrossing (tm = 0.983), with no apparent bi-parental inbreeding. The estimate of correlation of paternity indicated that each of mother trees is pollinated on average by a relatively large number of effective males (Nep = 30.3). The observed genetic diversity and mating system patterns indicate that the seeds produced by the studied plus trees possess high genetic variation needed in reforestation processes.

An extremely endangered population of Viola uliginosa Besser at the classical locality of this taxon has been studied. The AFLP analysis was based on 18 specimens of V. uliginosa (about 10% of preserved individuals); additionally, two individuals of V. riviniana were included in the data set as the out group. A high genetical uniformity of the whole population (similarity indexes close to 1) was detected. It was not correlated significantly with the spatial distribution of the plants. The study serves as a basis for practical conservation measures and at the same time as a starting point for a more extensive research on the genetical variability of the species throughout its range.

Opis:
The paper contains results of investigations carried out in crop fields within the protected area, which is an important refuge of species diversity in grounds dominated by large-area farms. The segetal vegetation is represented by 13 plant communities, the development of which is influenced by various tillage manipulations. As a result, the segetal flora of the Ślęża Landscape Park is heavily threatened and the structure and species richness of phytocoenoses are distinctly transformed. This is reflected in the frequency of weed occurrence in crops (i.e. there is a small group of common species and a very numerous group of species with 1 or 2 localities), as well as in values of biocoenotic indicators, e.g. the values of diversity indicator H vary between 1 and 3.5. An analysis of archaeophytes participation (frequency and numbers) in ATPOL squares indicates their significant connection with archaeological sites of the Neolithic settlement. Particular adherence to the early Neolithic settlement areas shows a group of species from the Caucalidion alliance. The richness and diversity of the Park vegetation, conditioned by many hundreds of years of agriculture, are now strongly transformed and have become impoverished. Establishing the Landscape Park, in order to preserve the natural-landscape character of the environment and its cultural and historical values, does not ensure the protection of both the species and the phytocoenotic diversity of this area.

Opis:
Fragmented distribution, the breeding system and effects of genetic drift in small-size populations occurring at edge of the species range play an important role in shaping genetic diversity of such a species. Melica transsilvanica is a plant rare in the flora of Poland, where it reaches the northern limit of its continuous range. Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) DNA profiling method was applied to measure genetic diversity among and within populations of M. transsilvanica. Additionally, genetic relationships between M. transsilvanica and Melica ciliata, two closely related species, were explored. A total of 68 plants from 7 populations of M. transsilvanica and 24 plants from 2 populations of M. ciliata, collected in Poland and outside it, were analyzed. Using 294 AFLP fragments from 3 primer combinations, accessions were grouped into two major clusters associating with M. ciliata and M. transsilvanica, respectively. Further, two subclusters, corresponding to the samples collected from the Pieniny Mts and from the Kraków - Częstochowa Upland were clearly distinguished within the M. transsilvanica group. The hierarchical AMOVA exhibited significant genetic distinction between these geographic regions (60.89%, p < 0.001). The obtained results showed that the most genetic diversity resided between the populations of M. transsilvanica (86.03%) while considerably lower genetic variation was found within the populations (13.97%), which is consistent with the results reported for self-plants. The low level of AFLP genetic variation of M. transsilvanica can be caused by the geographic isolation of populations, which preserves the dominant self-mating breeding system of the species. Individual populations of M. transsilvanica are characterized by isolated gene pools differing by a small number of loci.

Klátovské rameno is the lowland slow-flowing groundwater feed eutrophic tributary of the Malý Dunaj River (Danube Plain), where our study of temporal changes of aquatic macrophytes vegetation was realised in 1999 and 2005. For survey of aquatic vascular macrophytes the Kohler’s method (Janauer 2003) was used, which is compliant with European standard EN 14184. Altogether 35 aquatic macrophyte species were recorded during the survey. Nuphar lutea persisted as the most dominant species in 1996 and 2005. Species diversity increased slightly after the nine years: ten species immigrated to the watercourse. The changes in species abundance have shown weak differences, however the abundance of Sparganium emersum has increased markedly. Alien species Elodea canadensis and both S. emersum and Hydrocharis morsus-ranae significantly enlarged their distribution in the stream. The ecological quality of the river, based on the aquatic macrophytes assessment criteria, was slightly impaired after nine years, but still 90% of its studied course has a high or good ecological status.

Natural importance and economical and usefulness values (FVS) of meadows situated in the valley of the central Mogilnica River were assessed. The natural value was determined on the basis of: the number of species in a phytosociological relevés, phytosociological structure, floristic diversity expressed by the Shannon-Wiener index (H’) and the method of plant community valorization according to Oświt. Site conditions: moisture (F), soil reaction (R), soil nitrogen content (N) of the examined meadow communities were evaluated using the Ellenberg phyto-indication. Both natural and usefulness values of the examined communities depend on the place of occurrence in the valley. The communities situated closest to the river, which were assigned to the class of Phragmitetea, developed in their typical forms and presented significant and moderately significant natural values, although their sward was found to be characterized by low usefulness value. Communities growing further from the river, representing the Molinio-Arrhena-theretea class, are utilized at the present time. Grasses found in these communities are of moderate natural importance but the meadows provide high yields of good fodder value.

The results of phytosociological studies on the diversity of alder-ash and willow communities in the Pogórze Strzyżowskie foothills are presented. These communities, especially Carici remotae-Fraxinetum are increasingly rare in the landscape of the Carpathians. The paper supports new data allowing better understanding of the diversity of the Carici remotae-Fraxinetum in the southern Poland. On the basis of 59 phytosociological releves two sub-associations were identified: C.r.-F. chrysosplenietosum and C. r.-F. equisetetosum maximii and the form with Alnus incana. The association Carici remotae-Fraxinetum belongs to submontane regional form and to East Carpathian variant. The significance of Caltha palustris-Chaerophyllum hirsutum community is also presented, along with the role of Carex pendula and Matteucia struthiopteris. The paper provides also documentary data on sporadic occurrence of Salicetum triandro-viminalis and Salicetum albo-fragilis communities.

Opis:
Abandoned semi-natural limestone grasslands are often overgrown by shrubs and trees. Little is know if and to what extant xerothermic limestone grasslands can be restored by tree cutting. This was tested in a 12-year experiment after the clearing of a 35-year-old secondary pine wood developed on unmanaged grassland in the close proximity of not overgrown old grassland. After 12 years, there were no significant differences in the number of field layer species on the plots in the old and restored grasslands. But over this period the number of meadow species increased in all sites, while the number of xerothermic calcareous species increased significantly only in the old grassland plots. The developing shrub layer negatively influenced the number of nitrophilous and ruderal species in grasslands restored in the former close and open woods, and the number of all species, including the number of non-tufted perennials and perennials with vegetative spread, in the former open wood. The number of meadow species increased in years with higher precipitation in late spring and early summer. The obtained results suggest that in overgrowing grasslands shrubs and trees should be cut every few years, before their covers increase to about 30%. However, this treatment alone will not stop the changes to communities with dominance of tall and vegetatively spreading grasses and forbs. Cutting trees and shrubs in sites where most grassland species have already vanished, without additional managements supporting their dispersal, seedling recruitment and development, is not sufficient to restore limestone grasslands rich in xerothermic species.

The study of the morphology of pollen concerned eight species of the genus Taraxacum. Seven types were chosen with a different number of chromosomes belonging to the section Palustria: Taraxacum paucilobum 2n = 3x = 24, T. subdolum 2n = 3x =24, T. subpolonicum 2n =3x = 24, T. vindobonense 2n = 4x = 32, T. trilobifolium 2n = 4x = 32, T. mendax 2n = 5x = 40, T. portentosum 2n =? and one type from the section Obliqua – T. platyglossum 2n =?. Pollen from all the examined species was observed by SEM microscopy. A distinct relation exists between the morphology of pollen and the way of reproduction. Pollen of triploidal species, being compulsory apomicts, is characterized by a great variability of the size and a high percentage of deformed pollen grains. Tetraploids, being optional apomicts, produce regular pollen with a relatively even size. The regular type of pollen in pentaploidal Taraxacum mendax and in species with an unknown number of chromosomes (Taraxacum portentosum and T. platyglossum) suggests that these taxa are optional apomicts.

Pyłek wszystkich gatunków obserwowano w skaningowym mikroskopie elektronowym SEM. Istnieje wyraźna zależność pomiędzy morfologią pyłku a sposobem rozmnażania. Pyłek gatunków triploidalnych, będących obligatoryjnymi apomiktami charakteryzuje się dużą zmiennością wielkości oraz wysokim odsetkiem ziaren zdeformowanych. Tetraploidy będące apomiktami fakultatywnymi wytwarzają pyłek regularny, o stosunkowo wyrównanej wielkości. Regularny typ pyłku u pentaploidalnego Taraxacum mendax oraz u gatunków o nieznanej liczbie chromosomów (Taraxacum portentosum i T. platyglossum) pozwala przypuszczać, że taksony te są apomiktami fakultatywnymi.

Results of the studies on the floristic biodiversity of the kurgans in the Pontic desert steppe of the Black Sea Lowland (Kherson Region) are presented. Twenty-six of about 130 kurgans higher than 3 m, distributed over an area of approx. 1500 km2, were surveyed and the flora of 5 microhabitats within every kurgan (top, southern and northern slope, southern and northern foot) was examined. The richness of the kurgan flora is estimated at 305 species. Species of alien origin constituted 23% of the total flora, which indicates limited anthropogenic influence. Species of two classes, Festuco-Brometea and Stellarietea mediae were predominant, which also confirmed the semi-natural character of the kurgan flora. The lowest number of species was recorded on top, which was relatively rich in synanthropes, particularly therophytes (Stellarietea mediae). The north side was richer in species than the south side of the kurgans. Steppe species were the most stable and important component of the flora of the slopes (45-47% of the species represented the class Festuco-Brometea). The total flora of the foot contained more species and was more diversified than the flora of the slopes (although the mean number of species was similar in both habitats), but each species occurred at low frequency. There was a higher proportion of species which were introduced from the area surrounding the kurgans, e.g. weeds, halophytes, meadow species, as well as trees which are rarely found in the desert steppe zone. In spite of the small size of the kurgans, significant differences between the floristic composition of the various microhabitats were detected.

Opis:
W monokulturze kukurydzy znacznie zwiększyły swój udział Echinochloa crus galli i Chenopodium album oraz Solanum nigrum, Aethusa cynapium i Galeopsis tetrahit. Zbiorowisko chwastów w kukurydzy uprawianej w zmianowaniu charakteryzowało się większą bioróżnorodnością, a zmiany liczebności i składu gatunkowego w latach badań były niewielkie.
Maize is a crop that is characterized by a high level of herbicide consumption, due to its efficiency and fastness of chemical control performance. Cultivation of maize is more profitable than cereals. The research conducted in 2004-2007 in western Poland on weed infestation in maize showed the negative aspect of maize cultivation in monoculture. At the beginning of the study, the following weed species occurred: Echinochloa crus galli, Chenopodium album, Agropyron repens, Galium aparine, Viola arvensis, Thlaspi arvense, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Anthemis arvensis and different dicotyledonous weeds present in field experiments. Four years later, the following taxons predominated in maize monoculture: Echinochloa crus-gali, Chenopodium album and new weed species which occurred in trials: Solanum nigrum, Aethusa cynapium. Therefore, experiments were performed in the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Wrocław (50o58’ N; 16o56’ E), using herbicides and the following mixtures: Lumax 537,5 SE – applied preemergence, Callisto 100 SC + Milagro 040 – applied postemergence at the 3-4 leaf stage of maize, Maister 310 WG + Actirob 842 EC + Mustang 306 SE – applied postemergence in split doses, limiting weed infestation in maize monoculture crop in direct sowing variant and simplified tillage variant, in ploughing cultivation. Long-term research showed that the effectiveness of herbicides present at farming market should be improved through, for example, postemergence herbicide choice to secondary weed infestation, and the application of mixtures of sulfonylurea herbicides used at the divided fractional doses for weed infestation control at postemergence time. The system of weed control using glyphosate to overwintering species and the ones germinating before a cultivated plant and additionally, the mixture of Maister 310 WG + Actirob 842 EC + Mustang 306 SE applied postemergence in split doses for the secondary weed control, made it possible to eliminate undesired plants on that soil stand in the most efficient way and to achieve the highest grain yield.
