Opis:
This study describes the phytoplankton community in sheltered euhaline waters of the Basque coast (southeastern Bay of Biscay). Phytoplankton composition, cell size, abundance, biomass and the presence of potentially toxic taxa, together with chlorophyll a, nutrients and hydrographic and optical conditions were measured, from August 2016 to August 2017, in the Mutriku port, with the main aim of assessing the suitability of the phytoplankton community as a food resource for bivalves. The water column in Mutriku showed the typical environmental conditions of Basque marine waters, with no significant nutrient enrichment caused by anthropogenic pressures. Haptophytes represented the greatest contribution to cell abundance (31—47%), and diatoms were the dominant group in terms of biomass (52—79%), which could favour mussel growth due to their high fatty acid content. In addition, the size structure of the phytoplankton community was suitable for mussel ingestion, since the predominant cell size was 2—20 μm. Regarding toxic phytoplankton, the genera that pose a risk for human health and those that affect negatively mussel physiology and survival were considered. Altogether, ten toxic phytoplankton taxa were identified, contributing in less than 5% to the total cell abundance of Mutriku. However, median chlorophyll a concentration was low (0.5 μg L−1), reflecting the oligotrophic conditions of the area. Therefore, even if the composition of the phytoplankton community could be favourable for bivalve aquaculture, biomass values are low compared to other zones of bivalve production.

Opis:
The study was based on CTD-casts performed on 5 consecutive days at 7 positions along a shallow- to deep-water transect during the spring bloom in the southwest Kattegat. The development, dynamics and fate of the sub-surface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) are described. The SCM developed at a constant rate of 1.4 mg chl a m−3 d−1, which is equal to a carbon fixation rate of 49.0 mgC m−3 d−1. The SCM developed at 6 m depth at low irradiance levels (10–43.0 μE m−2 s−1). Chl a concentrations reached up to 23 mg chl a m−3 in the centre of the SCM. Growth rates in the SCM were estimated at 0.82 d−1. The water column was only weakly stratified, with nutrients in excess in the whole of the water column. The SCM was relocated vertically to depths below the photic zone by wind-induced advection between the bay and the outer Kattegat. There were indications of a horizontal relocation of the SCM by an internal standing wave. Application of high spatial and temporal resolution made it possible to estimate key SCM parameters, such as growth rates [mg chl a m−3 d−1] and carbon fixation rate [mgC m−3 d−1], on the basis of chl a variations in time and space.

Opis:
This volume contains a set of eight papers presenting the results of the latest research into the interaction of light with marine phytoplankton by teams from the Marine Physics Department at the IO PAS in Sopot, and the Department of Environmental Physics at the Pedagogical University of Słupsk. These results were presented at the ‘Second Workshop on Luminescence and Photosynthesis of Marine Phytoplankton’ (Sopot–Paraszyno, 11–15 October 1999) sponsored by the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research. This introductory article discusses the most important assumptions and objectives of the research, and outlines the latest results. These are subsequently discussed in detail in the following papers: (1) Majchrowski & Ostrowska, Influence of photo- and chromatic acclimation on pigment composition in the sea, (2) Woźniak et al., Model of the ‘in vivo’ spectral absorption of algal pigments. Part 1. Mathematical apparatus, (3) Majchrowski et al., Model of the ‘in vivo’ spectral absorption of algal pigments. Part 2. Practical applications of the model, (4)Ostrowska et al., Variability of the specific fluorescence of chlorophyll in the ocean. Part 1. Theory of classical ‘in situ’ chlorophyll fluorometry, (5) Ostrowska et al., Variability of the specific fluorescence of chlorophyll in the ocean. Part 2. Fluorometric method of chlorophyll a determination, (6) Ficek et al., Influence of non-photosynthetic pigments on the measured quantum yield of photosynthesis, (7) Ficek et al., Variability of the portion of functional PS2 reaction centres in the light of a fluorometric study. For the reader’s convenience, we append a list of the symbols denoting the physical quantities used in the texts. The nomenclature and denotations are in line with the conventions employed in the subject literature.

Opis:
The limnological research has explored an immense momentum throughout the world over previous few decades. It has evolved as an individual division of ecology and numerous fields of specialization in limnology are acknowledged such as physical limnology, chemical limnology, planktonology, paleolimnology and limnology of specific areas like desert, high altitudes, temperate region, tropical region etc. The Swift advances in the field of limnology have taken place particularly in European countries and North America. Eutrophication, community dynamics, planktonology and pollution is an actively engaged viewpoint of various laboratories in exploring inland water bodies. The current article is an endeavor to give a widespread analysis and furnish a broad review of literature associated with the initiation of limnology and work done in Indian sub-continent with one hundred seventy four quoted references.

Opis:
Environmental pollution particularly heavy metal pollution into aquatic ecosystem has led to multiple damage in almost all life forms. Cadmium is one of the priority pollutant listed by United States Environmental Protection Agency or US EPA that widely known to have an adverse effect to organisms as well as human health. One type of organism that is susceptible to the effects of metal pollution is phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is a group of microalgae that are easy to find and are primary producers in aquatic environments. Phytoplankton plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems because they serve as primary producers. They are representing the water total primary productivity and reinforcing the aquatic life on the higher food chain. Thus, any threats that endangered the population of phytoplankton can lead to trophical cascade or even worse, biodiversity loss. The exposure of cadmium in high concentration to phytoplankton can lead to various impact including cell damage and disruption, biosynthesis inhibition of photosynthetic pigment (e.g. chlorophyll and carotenoid), chlorphyll degradation or known as chlorosis, thylakoid membrane degradation, inhibition of cellular metabolism and cell division. It is important to study the impact of cadmium to phytoplankton in a cellular level to better understand what mechanism lies and to what extent that the cadmium will be transferred to higher trophical organism via bioaccumulation or biomagnification.

Opis:
Parasitism is an immensely successful mode of nutrition and parasitic organisms are abundant in most ecosystems. This is also the case for marine planktonic ecosystems in which a large variety of parasitic species are known. Most of these parasites are protists and they infect a wide range of hosts from the marine plankton, ranging from other protists to larger planktonic invertebrates. Parasites often have morphologies and life cycles that are highly specialized as compared to their free-living relatives. However, this does not mean that parasites are necessarily odd or rare phenomena; on the contrary parasites constitute numerically and ecologically important components of the ecosystem. This review gives an overview of the existing knowledge on the diversity and occurrence of parasitic protists in the marine plankton and examines the available information on the potential effects and role of parasitism in this ecosystem. Importance is given to the fact that prevalence and impact of parasitic organisms in marine planktonic systems appear to be overwhelmingly understudied.
