Opis:
Introduction and aim. The cumulative incidence of drug-induced thrombocytopenia (DIT) is 10 cases per one million people per year with a prevalence of approximately 25% in critically ill patients. This review provides a comprehensive view of drug-induced thrombocytopenia, diagnosis, underlying mechanisms, common strategies in therapeutics, and potential alternatives. Material and methods. Databases such as “Google Scholar”, “PubMed”, “Medline” and “MDPI” was used for literature review with the keywords, “platelets”, “platelet disorders”, “thrombocytopenia”, “drug-induced”, “oxidative stress” “plant extracts”, “phytochemicals”, “antioxidants”, for the articles published between 2013-2023 and written in the English language. Analysis of the literature. Several antimicrobials, anti-cancer drugs, and antivirals are often reported to cause adverse effects during treatment, such as thrombocytopenia. A thorough understanding of the underlying pathophysiology is important for appropriate treatment. Even though an improvement in platelet count is observed after the discontinuation of the causative drug, there is a dire need for treatment in some cases due to associated complications. There are various pitfalls with conventional treatments which include clinical complications and lack of effectiveness. Conclusion. Interventions in therapeutics through antioxidants can aid in faster recovery. Various plant extracts and phytochemicals have been employed as therapeutics in platelet disorders due to their exceptional antioxidant activity. It is imperative to explore the bioactive components of natural products and their influence on platelet efficacy. Also, it highlights how antioxidants can be used as a safe, yet effective option as therapeutics for treating a complicated disorder such as DIT or be used as supplements to prevent adverse effects of existing treatments involving antibiotics and chemotherapeutics.

The leaves of mistletoe (Viscum album) harvested from oil bean tree (Pentaclethra macrophylla) in Imo State South Eastern Nigeria was studied. The study was aimed at carrying out trace metal, Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) and phytochemical analysis of ethanol leave extracts of Viscum album harvested from Pentaclethra macrophylla. The sample for trace metal analysis was digested with a mixture of concentrated HNO3 and HClO4 at a ratio of 1:1 for 24 hours. Ethanol was then used to extract the sample meant for FTIR and phytochemical analysis. Herein, trace metal determination indicates the presence of Mg, Zn, Fe, Cu and Cr, and the concentration of Ca and Mn is at < 0.00 mg/kg. The result of the phytochemical screening demonstrates the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, saponins and tannins. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of alcohols, amides, aromatics and carbonyl compounds in ethanol extracts of Viscum album harvested from Pentaclethra macrophylla. The presence of some trace metals and phytochemicals, as well as some important functional groups in the plant sample, as indicated by the result of the study, authenticates its use in traditional medicine.

Opis:
Phytochemicals, proximate, minerals and anti-nutrient compositions of young cocoyam (Colocasia esculenta) leaves were determined using standard methods. Qualitative and quantitative analyses for phytochemicals confirmed the presence of bioactive constituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins in appreciable amounts, while terpenes, cardiac glycocides and tannins were only present in trace concentrations. Mineral analysis revealed that K recorded the highest content - with 214.00 ± 2.11 mg/100g, followed by Ca - 157.10 ± 1.47 mg/100g, Mg - 63.00 ± 0.58 mg/100g, P - 32.00 ± 0.61 mg/100g, while Fe had the lowest value - 0.10 ± 0.14 mg/100g. Proximate composition analysis of C. esculenta leaves indicated that CHO, protein and crude fibre were present in high quantities (35.22, 17.10 and 16.41 % respectively), while fat was at the lowest content (8.82%). Anti-nutritional factor analysis of young leaves of C. esculenta indicated that phytates was present in huge quantity - 11.03 ± 0.12mg/g, followed by oxalates - 7.62 ± 0.14 mg/g, while tannins recorded the lowest anti-nutritional contents - 0.12 ± 0.06 mg/g. This study has also revealed that the young leaves of C. esculenta contain appreciable levels of bioactive components (phytochemicals such as as alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins; minerals K, Ca, Mg, P and Fe) and appreciable amounts of CHO, protein and crude fibre. The results of anti-nutrients analysis showed high contents of phytate and oxalate. The last is probably responsible for the itching effect and also interferes with the utilization of essential nutrients. Thus, young leaves of C. esculenta provide appreciable quantities of nutrients and thus can rival other conventional vegetables normally consumed in Nigeria.

Opis:
The fruit processing industry generates huge amounts of waste annually, causing severe environmental problems. Mango processing produces around 20 million tons of wastes from the non-consumed fraction, mainly peels and seeds, which constitute 30–60% of the fruit weight. However, various phytochemicals found in these residues have been implicated in preventing cancer and also cardio-metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases. Particularly, phenolic compounds hold a promising potential to be utilized as modulatory agents of the human gut microbiota (prebiotics-like actions). This review article mainly discusses the effect of phenolics from mango wastes on gut microbiota modulation and its beneficial repercussions for human health. Moreover, it also discusses the importance of phenolic compounds of mango peel and seed kernel residues, their extraction, identification, and quantification.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are connected with the generation of free radicals and one of its adverse effects is gastric ulceration. Ulceration was induced orally using aspirin. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were used for this study (120-150g). Rats were divided into 6 groups with each group containing 4 rats. Rats were pre-treated orally with cimetidine, a reference drug. Group 1 rats orally received 1% gum acacia solution as the control group, Group 2 rats orally administered 25 mg/kg aspirin and served as the ulcerated, untreated group, rats in groups 3 and 4 were pre-treated orally with 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg respectively for 3 days while rats in groups 5 and 6 were pre-treated orally with 50 mg/kg cimetidine and 50 mg/kg catechin respectively for 3 days. The result of this study shows that the ulcerated, untreated rats showed increased concentrations of gastric volume with a concomitant decrease in protein concentration compared to the control group, cimetidine and catechin reversed these observations. Activities of glutathione, catalase were decreased in the ulcerated, untreated group but pre-treatment with different doses, cimetidine and catechin reversed these observations. In conclusion, the ethanoic extract of L. aestuans can be said to be used as an anti-ulcerogenic agent against aspirin-induced gastric ulcer which is due to the presence of phytochemicals in the plant.

The phytochemical properties of the ethanolic leaves extract of Tetracarpidium conophorum and its antidiabetic properties on alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats were evaluated. The qualitative phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, terpenes, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides and anthraquinones in T. conophorum leaf extract. Quantitative phytochemical screening of T. conophorum revealed the presence of saponins (8.77 ± 1.15 mg/kg), tannins (7.84 ± 0.62 mg/kg), alkaloids (5.49 ± 0.14 mg/kg), flavonoids (5.26 ± 0.16 mg/kg), cardiac glycosides (2.13 ± 0.45 mg/kg), terpenes (1.47 ± 0.30 mg/kg) and anthraquinones (1.33 ± 0.18 mg/kg). The toxicity test of the extracts produced various degree of toxicity ranging from writhing, decreased respiration, convulsion to mortality. The intensities of these effects were proportional to the dose administered. The LD50 for T. conophorum was 1369.31 mg/kg. The results of the influence of ethanolic leaves of T. conophorum on alloxan-induced diabetic rats showed significant (p<0.05) reduction in the blood glucose level (BGL) as time of treatments increases. The leaves extracts of T. conophorum significantly (p<0.05) decreased the blood glucose level of diabetic rats on day 14 compared to diabetic untreated (control) rats. The BGL of diabetic rats treated with oral hypoglycemic agent alone were significantly (p<0.05) different from control group on day 14. The presence of these biologically active compounds suggest that the plant could serve as potential sources of drugs and their secondary metabolites could exert some biological activities when taken by animals. The extracts of T. conophorum also produced a similar reduction in blood sugar level as the standard hypoglycemic drug (Glibenclamide). This may be due to its ability to enhance insulin secretion like the standard drug. This positive result confirms why herbalists use this leaf for the management of diabetes.

Malignant skin neoplasms are one of the most common human malignancies. The incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancers and malignant melanoma is constantly increasing. The current therapies, especially for malignant melanoma, have relatively low success rates. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new remedies that are both safe and effective. Natural substances have always been an important source for the discovery of new therapies. In turn, a number of studies have indicated that some phytocheicals could have an anti-tumour effect. In vitro and in vivo testing of malignant skin neoplasm models revealed different anti-tumour actions, including antioxidation, carcinogen inactivation, anti-proliferation, cell cycle arrest, induction of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis, or a combination of them. The aim of this paper is to describe anti-tumour compounds derived from natural sources that might be used in the therapy of malignant skin neoplasm. The phytochemicals discussed below include carotenoids, terpenoids and flavonoids.

Mung bean or moong or green gram, an important grain legume, is cultivated mainly in Asian countries and other parts of the world as a food crop. It is a highly nutritious grain legume with a high content of easily digestible proteins (20–32%), carbohydrates (53.3–67.1%), lipids (0.71–1.85%), vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It also contains some antinutrients such as tannins, phytic acid, hemagglutinin, polyphenols, and trypsin inhibitors in low concentrations. The sprouting of seeds leads to dynamic changes in metabolites with a decrease in antinutrient content and an increase in the nutritional value. In addition to these nutrients and antinutrients, the plant also contains various other phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, glycosides, and bioactive peptides, which exhibit an array of pharmaceutically important properties such as anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, lipid metabolism regulation, antihypertensive, antiallergic, and antitumor. Being rich in nutritional value and other phytochemical components, the plant can be explored further for its pharmaceutical properties and used as an efficient food additive in the preparation of different types of dietary supplements or food-derived drugs.

yellow and brown tiger nuts
Opis:
The present research accounts for the physicochemical and phytochemical characteristics of yellow and brown Cyperus esculentus, which were subjected to standard chemical and biochemical analysis. The results obtained from the analysis of yellow tiger nut showed the following phytochemical properties: anthocyanin 0.82 ± 0.02 µg/ml, oxalate 1.43 ± 0.05 µg/ml, tannin 12.22 ± 0.10 µg/ml, rutin 39.19 ± 0.29 µg/ml, phenol 10.94 ± 0.05 µg/ml, lunamarine 38.99 ± 0.07 µg/ml, saponin 44.67 ± 0.15 µg/ml, ribalinidine 1.35 ± 0.03 µg/ml, phytate 0.33 ± 0.01 µg/ml, catechin 48.29 ± 0.04 µg/ml, and kaempferol 38.59 ± 0.02 µg/ml. The brown tiger nut showed the presence of the phytochemicals with values as: anthocyanin 0.01 ± 0.00 µg/ml, oxalate 2.66 ± 0.02 µg/ml, tannin 12.67 ± 0.04 µg/ml, rutin 43.99 ± 0.05 µg/ml, phenol 11.02 ± 0.10 µg/ml, lunamarine 39.66 ± 0.03 µg/ml, saponin 47.79 ± .06 µg/ml, ribalinidine 1.21 ± 0.04 µg/ml, phytate 0.28 ± 0.03 µg/ml, catechin 46.77 ± 0.05 µg/ml, and kaempferol 38.34 ± 0.15 µg/ml. The observed level of mineral elements in the tiger nut is in the increasing order of zinc > sodium > iron > copper > calcium > magnesium > potassium for yellow tiger nut, and for brown tiger nut the order is zinc > sodium > iron > copper > calcium > magnesium > potassium. The values of physical and chemical properties recorded for yellow tiger nut is in the increasing order of moisture > ash content > crude protein > crude fiber > crude fat > carbohydrate, the increasing order for brown tiger nut shows ash content > moisture > crude protein > crude fiber > crude fat > carbohydrate. This indicates that tiger nuts contain elevated carbohydrate levels, crude fat and protein. From the data obtained, the high potassium to low sodium ratio of the two species of tiger nuts consequently might be imperative in diet recommendations for patients with high blood pressure (high BP) and edema as well. The investigated tiger nut varieties are rich sources of the phytochemicals, oil and contain moderate amounts of protein. They are also rich sources of fiber and carbohydrates. The phytochemical constituents of the tiger nuts are important and could be of high commercial significance in both, research institutes and pharmaceuticals companies for manufacturing of new drugs and for therapeutic applications.
