Opis:
The phytoplankton abundance and physico-chemical parameters of Ifewara Reservoir, Southwestern Nigeria was studied for four months (February to December, 2015). Four sampling stations (designated Stations 1-4) were established along the horizontal axis of the reservoir - from inflow region to the dam site end. At each station, net plankton samples were collected by sieving 30 litres of water through a plankton net of 50 µm mesh size into 30 ml concentrate volume. These were then preserved in 5% formalin solution and later treated with Lugol’s solution and reduced to 3 ml for microscope observation. The results of the physico-chemical parameters showed that some were above recommended limits of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agencies (NESREA) for drinking water and aquatic life. Sixty-nine (69) species of phytoplankton were recorded from the four investigated sampling stations. The abundance of phytoplankton was in the following order; Bacillariophyceae (90.84%) > Chlorophyceae (44.67%) > Cyanophyceae (10.69%) > Charophyceae (0.31%) > Euglenophyceae (0.12%) > Dinophyceae (0.06%) > Chrysophyceae (0.03%). The most abundant phytoplankton species was Fragilaria aceania, accounting for 74.28% of the total, followed by Cosmarium quadrum (13.04%), Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum (11.97%) and Oscillatoria tenuis (8.03%). With regard to the horizontal pattern of variation along the reservoir, the highest phytoplankton abundance was recorded at the inflow basin and the lowest abundance at the dam site. Almost all the phytoplankton groups also had their highest mean abundance during the rainy season rather then during the dry season.

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of growing location in the physico-chemical properties of gum arabic obtained from Acacia senegal. Authentic representative gum exudates samples were collected from Abederafi, Yabello, Awash and Filtu areas of Ethiopia. The experiment was conducted to determine Moisture content (MC), Ash content (Ash), pH, Relative Viscosity (RV), Nitrogen (N), Crude Protein (CP) and Mineral contents. Laboratory analyses were employed to determine the physico-chemical characteristics. The results were analyzed by using SAS Statistical Software. The analysis indicated that very high significant differences (p < 0.001) were seen on Ash, pH, RV, iron, calcium, and sodium contents of the gum arabic samples between the study sites. Furthermore, significant differences (p < 0.05) were indicated for N, CP, Cu, K contents. The results also showed MC, Mn and Mg contents have no significant difference among growing locations. According to our results, the percentage moisture content of the gum arabic samples were between 12.64 % and 13.41 %, while Ash percentage were between 0.32 % and 16.98 %. The mean pH values of the gum samples, obtained by employing different concentration of aqueous solutions also ranged between 4.4 and 4.97. In addition, the relative viscosity of the gum samples studied fall between 0.9 to 4.2 centipose, while Nitrogen and crude protein contents of the gum arabic samples from the study areas were from 0.313 % to 0.513 % and 1.943 % to 3.21 %, respectively. The major mineral element compositions of the gum arabic samples in descending order were Mg, Ca, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn and K. As compared to international standards and prior studies on gum arabic, the gum-arabic samples from the study sites have comparable physico-chemical characteristics.

Opis:
The physico-chemical characterization of Prunus amygdalus, Dacryodes edulis and Chrysophillum albidium seed oils were investigated, together with their methyl esters. The vegetable oils were extracted by applying the solvent extraction method, using n-hexane. Prunus amygdalus had the highest oil yield (60.1%), followed by Dyacrodes edulis (55.76 %) and least from Chrysophillum albidium (13.67%). The oils and their biodiesel were then analyzed for acid value, free fatty acid, specific gravity, ash content, iodine value, peroxide value, saponification value, kinematic viscosity, flash point, smoke point, titre value, cloud point, moisture content and refractive index. Accordingly, Dyacrodes edulis seed oil had the highest acid value of 6.57 and required two-step transesterifictaion. The produced biodiesels were discussed in the light of ASTM D 9751, ASTMD 6751 and DIN 14214. These showed yields of 94.36%, 93.03% and 86.49%, cetane numbers of 70.40, 55.20 and 64.57 and calorific values of 31,178.39 KJ/kg, 34,421.50 KJ/kg and 32,838.38 KJ/kg for Prunus amygdalus, Dacryodes edulis and Chrysophyllum albidium, respectively. Other fuel-related properties showed highly improved qualities upon transesterification and compared well with ASTM and EU standards. The overall results showed that the seed oils are viable for biodiesel production.

Opis:
This paper presents an experimental study aimed at evaluating the reactivity of natural and industrial local mineral additions (pozzolan, slag and limestone) by different microstructural and mechanical approaches. Binary, ternary and quaternary cement compositions were prepared with partial replacement of the clinker by additions limited to 20%, according to CEM II / A cement specifications. The reactivity during the hydration process is characterized by the hydraulic power of the additions to react with the water and the hydrates of the cement and the pozzolanic capability of fixing the portlandite to form new mineral phases which contribute to the resistance as much as the hydrated products of cement. An experimental methodology was established for the reactivity illustration of the additions by a microstructural approach based on a study of the physicochemical and microstructural properties realized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on pastes. Further, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mercury microporosity (MIP) on mortars at 28 days of age was performed. A mechanical approach based on compressive strength at 2, 7 and 28 days to determine the activity index according to ASTM C 618 has been undertaken. The results obtained show a good correlation between the microporosity, X-ray diffraction and the resistance activity index, in particular for the slag, as for the thermogravimetric analysis that clearly confirms the pozzolanic activity of the pozzolan addition. As for mechanical performance, a binary mortar with 20% slag showed a better compressive strength at 28 days (49.40 MPa) with a reactivity index (87.90%) compared to the control mortar. Further, the slag developed better resistance (49.53 MPa) in combination with the other additions for quaternary mortars (pozzolan, limestone and slag) with an optimal rate of 5, 5 and 10%, respectively. Nevertheless, the pozzolan showed better compressive strength values compared to the slag for the binary mortars at young age 2 and 7 days of 25.67 and 32.07 MPa, respectively.

1. Natomiast w tab.

The present study aims at evaluating the quality of shallow groundwater (SGW) and its suitability for irrigation purpose in the most urbanised part of Johannesburg city, South Africa. The SGW samples were collected in three consecutive years and analysed for 20 selected physicochemical parameters, and heavy metals. The results were compared with the South African water quality, and Food and Agricultural Organization irrigation water quality guidelines, and standard indices derived from laboratory outputs. The results of the study show that all physiochemical parameters and heavy metals were within the limits set by both guidelines for irrigation purposes, except for potassium (3.58 mg∙dm-3) and manganese levels (3.152 mg∙dm-3). The calculated irrigation parameter values of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (Na%), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazard (MH), Kelly’s ratio (KR) and permeability index (PI) were within the permissible range of irrigation water quality standards. The findings of this study provide helpful information for decision-makers such as utilisation of the studied groundwater for irrigation uses.

Opis:
Today, environmental water degradation all over the world comes about due to the growth of urban, industrial and agricultural activities. As a result of these discharges without any prior treatment, the quality of river waters in Kosovo has deteriorated greatly. On the basis of the research that has been done so far in the rivers of Kosovo, it was shown that Drenica is one of the rivers that are constantly exposed to the discharge of industrial waters. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze the impact of water discharged from Feronikeli on the water quality of the Drenica River and the possibility of its protection. The realization of this study is focused on the evaluation of physico-chemical parameters of the water of the Drenica River, the content of heavy metals in the water, the analysis and comparison of the results obtained using the standard for the assessment of the ecological status of surface waters of Romania (GD 161). Laboratory assays were developed according to standard analysis methods (APHA). The results obtained, analyzed and compared with the values of the parameters according to the standard referred to in this research, confirm that the water of the Drenica River belongs to the class of water with “good quality” only in the source area, while in other flow stations river, especially in the third station S3 (Ferronikel industrial zone), water has “poor quality”, passing into the category of “very poor quality”. Therefore, in order to improve the current situation, it is recommended to apply the best environmental practices and proper management of industrial waste.

Opis:
Nigeria has relied for several decades on the importation of tallow fat for her industries despite its inconsistency in availability and price in the market The above challenges and the recent soaring value of Dollars to Naira have made it highly necessary for Nigeria to consider the quantum of about 9 tonnes/day of tallow fat sent down the drain in each Nigerian slaughterhouse. Therefore, this research work has investigated the Physico-chemical quality of Nigerian beef tallow fat obtained by wet rendering of slaughterhouse waste from Obosi in Anambra State of Nigeria. It was analyzed using AOAC procedures (1990, 1993). The slaughter waste gave 15% yield of tallow fat with 199.5 mg/gkOH, 0.40%, 2.05% of saponification value, unsaponifable matter and Free Fatty Acid (FFA), respectively. The Gas Chromatography (GC) revealed the following fatty acids: 46.65% stearic acid, followed by 41.33% palmitic acid and 9.0% oleic acid. The results were found to be agreement with ISO and CODEX-STAN 211(1999) standards. To this end, the quality and usefulness of Nigerian beef tallow has been validated. Hence, investment in this area would help reposition Nigerian slaughterhouse waste matter control strategy, economy and industry.

Opis:
The present work is a part of the impact study of the tourist resort "Taghazout Bay" installation on the coast of Taghazout (North of the Agadir bay). The purpose of this study was to assess the initial state of the macrozoobenthic structure present in the intertidal sands at the three study stations over the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The biological approach was accompanied by the study of some physico-chemical parameters of the seawater (temperature, pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen) and the study of the sediment (grading structure, classification, and contents in organic matter). PCA analysis identified a perfect correlation between the physico-chemical parameters. The sediment contains three grading classes only (medium sand, fine sand, and very fine sand), very well classified with normal proportions of organic matter. The study of intertidal benthic macrofauna of the sandy substrate shows ten species and spatiotemporal variations with a clear dominance of the Donax trunculus bivalve species. The authors noticed – from the DIMO model – that the variation profile of the spring and summer (2016 and 2017) shows a community dynamics called "Diversity type".
