The aim of the study was to analyze step counts of middle school students in structured and unstructured physical education classes (PE) according to age, gender, and school type. Data were collected on a sample of 74 students, 40 7th and 34 8th grade students recruited from private and public middle schools. Omron HJ-112 pedometers were used in this study to obtain step counts. There were statistically significant differences between boys and girls in the step counts in both structured and unstructured PE. A significant difference was observed between school types in step counts during structured PE in both genders, while no significant difference was found for unstructured PE. Significant difference was found between step counts of only boys of different grades in unstructured PE. Boys made more steps than girls both in structured and unstructured PE. In structured PE, 7th grade boys reached a higher number of steps than 8th grade boys.

Opis:
By the establishment of a special unit established within the Ministry of Education, called the “Maarif-I Umumiye Nezareti” [1] in 1871 and the reforms emerged in 1924 when the tasks of this special unit were taken by the Ministry of Education itself have triggered numerous variations on physical education teacher’s education. In Turkey it has been possible to study physical education in order to give lessons at schools since 1915, yet only male students above 18 have been permitted to these studies [10]. Between 1908 and 1920 there was another reform of physical education and as a consequence of Selim Sırrı Tarcanin’s efforts physical education at schools became much more important than before. In 1933 an institute for the education of physical education teachers was established at the college of education in Ankara, where female students were admitted access for the first time. Then, some additional sports academies were founded during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Between 1975–1976 the very first implementation of physical education in universities has been realized by Ege University through its Sports Academy. In 1982, physical education studies into the curriculum of common universities were reintegrated so that now there are 65 institutes for physical education at all of the country’s universities [4]. The candidates who want to study PE teacher’s education at universities are tested for specific criteria as their physical appearance and their basic skills in athletic games and gymnastics. If these students are accepted to this programme, they will be garanted a four-year bachelor degree including a schedule above 140 credits with the aim of being a physical education teacher [5].

Opis:
Sport carries great significance in Liechtenstein and is considered to be an important social and leisure time activity. From the 35’000 residents over a third is engaged in sports clubs. In the context of the lifestyle of the upcoming generation, physical education (PE) at school is of a particular biographical significance in addition to the sports clubs. In the environment of mandatory PE classes the children and youths accumulate not only multi-faceted physical, exercise and social experience; they are at the same time obliged to participate in a minimum amount of weekly physical activities. These aspects are taking on increasing significance in the light of the current development trends in the physical and health status of adolescents (e.g. increasingly poor posture, motoric deficiencies, overweight). School sports projects are consequently promoted generously by the country. With this background, the present contribution presents an insight into the current status of PE and school sports in Liechtenstein and some current projects are presented.

Opis:
During the winter semester 2008/09, the Institute of Sports Science at the Goethe University in Frankfurt (Germany), conducted and evaluated a seminar for sports students called „Good Practice in Physical Education“. This novel teaching format was designed to link didactical skill-acquisition, in terms of situated learning, to the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, which should enhance the professional core competences of future PE teachers. In addition, this pilot seminar was designed to evaluate the usefulness of a blended learning teaching approach, i.e. online learning combined with face-to-face learning, compared to a conventional attendance format. In both the seminar formats students worked together in constant small groups (3-4 persons). The learning results and related variables were assessed using a variety of tests, questionnaires and interviews. The blended-learning-groups (a total of 70 students) had 4 attendance and 9 online sessions, whereas the attendance groups (60 students) had 14 attendance sessions only. In order to make the learning progress between the groups comparable, at the beginning of the seminar the students were allocated as to the results of a baseline test assessing their knowledge about PE. The same test was conducted afterwards to measure the gain in knowledge with regard to the content of the lectures. The ability to transfer the acquired content-knowledge into PE practice (learning transfer) was assessed by means of a poster presentation, which had to be prepared by each student group during the final phase of the seminar. In addition to the performance tests, data concerning the following variables were collected: learning environment, learning style, learning motivation, team competences. Furthermore, group interviews were carried out and videotaped, in order to analyze the effects of team work on learning performance. At present, the following results were obtained: - The students of the blended-learning-seminar gained significantly more content-knowledge than the students of the attendance seminar (p < .01). - This finding is consistent with a significantly higher appreciation of the learning environment by the blended-learning-groups (p < .01). - However, no significant difference in the learning transfer could be found.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a physical education-based stretching program performed during warm-up and cool-down periods on hamstring extensibility in schoolchildren aged 9- 10 years. A sample of 73 schoolchildren, 36 boys and 37 girls, aged 9-10 years old from three classes were clustered randomly assigned to a no-training group (n = 24), warm-up group (n = 25), or cooldown group (n = 24). During physical education classes, the students of the warm-up and cool-down groups performed a four-minute stretching program twice a week for ten weeks during the warm-up and the cool-down periods, respectively. Hamstring extensibility was estimated by the classic sit-and-reach test at the beginning and at the end of the stretching intervention program. The results of the ANOVA showed that both the warm-up and cool-down students had statistically significant higher values on the hamstring extensibility than the no-training students (p < 0.05). The warm-up and cool-down groups did not show statistically significant differences. Nevertheless, the cool-down students obtained a slightly higher magnitude effect when compared with the warm-up group (g = 0.67 and g = 0.56, respectively). In addition to the slight higher improvement during the cool-down, due to the negative effect of static stretching on performance as previously found in the literature, it seems that physical education teachers should improve students´ flexibility during the cool-down period of the sessions.

Opis:
Background. Physical activity of children and adults is considered an essential health determinant. Nowadays a considerable number of children and adolescents live sedentary lifestyles, and, as a result, more frequently suffer from the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, overweight and obesity. It is generally believed that a significant number of children abstain from exercising at school. However, representative research results are still unavailable. The aim of the present study was to estimate the extent of exercise avoidance at physical education lessons in primary schools, and to identify the factors increasing the proportion of nonexercisers. Material and methods. The investigations were carried out in 42 primary schools of the Province of Silesia; 1333 physical education lessons were surveyed (classes 4-6). Results. The mean percentage of nonexercisers was 9.2%. The proportion of girls abstaining from exercise was significantly higher and amounted to 13.7%. A lower percentage of non exercising pupils, i.e., 8.5%, was noted in mixed schools. The most common excuses from active participation in physical education lessons were leaving exercise clothes at home (45%) and excuse notes from parents (33.5%).

Postural defects are the real blight of the contemporary world. The scientific research has shown that the more inactive and sedentary lifestyle one leads, the faster their muscular system becomes dysfunctional. It also loses the ability of active spinal stabilization, which results in postural defects, a serious 21st century problem among young generation. Postural defects are believed to be caused by the lack of physical activity. Undoubtedly, physical education and sport play an important role in prevention and correction of poor posture as in this way particular body systems are affected, which consequently can lead to the elimination of postural defects or at least to their reduction. The objective of the article is to justify the need for corrective exercise during physical education classes as well as to show the role of sport and physical activity in maintaining good body posture and in correcting the existing defects.

In a changing society and in the era of ever-increasing development of technology and communication, the importance of human movement is being marginalised. A child’s spontaneous physical activity is often suppressed and replaced by passive activities. That happens at home and school. As a consequence, the level of physical fitness and the range of motor skills are decreased. People are aware of the importance of movement for the proper functioning of human body, but not always they apply the sound rules in practice. Both the suggestions contained in the new core curriculum of a general education and the ways of implementing the contents of physical education provide the teacher with a wide range of possibilities. Thus arises the need to expand the range of competences which students will acquire during university classes. Modification of the educational content by adjusting more to the expectations of the contemporary school is one of the ways to meet this goal

Background. Political changes in Poland resulted in the inclusion of health education to school as part of a teaching process, however it was introduced officially by the 1999 education reform. Physical education became an integral part of school curricula under the name of the “pro-health” educational path. The P.E. teacher has become one of the main organizers of the tasks related to health issues. The objective of this research was to collect information to what extent physical education classes, carried out at all school education levels, contributed to the development of health competencies of the students participating in this education reform project. Material and methods. The survey comprised 128 first-year university students of both sexes attending courses in either physical education or tourism and recreation. The research regarded the Kujawsko- Pomorskie and Pomorskie provinces. A survey method was applied, and the research tool utilized was a survey questionnaire. Results. According to the research findings the most significant input into health education was provided by a university and other sources of information. The most frequently indicated area of health education carried out in schools was physical education, whereas the smallest number of responders indicated emotional health. The issue of health at physical education classes was indicated by less than half of the responders. The most frequently indicated issues were education in personal hygiene, fair play attitude, and only a small percentage of the subjects were familiarized with the rules of toughening up. Conclusion. The possibilities that physical education may give as far as the development of all areas of health is concerned were not reflected in the respondents’ opinions

Celem pracy było poznanie opinii nauczycieli wychowania fizycznego na temat realizacji procesu edukacji fizycznej dziewcząt oraz wprowadzonych reform programowych (1999, 2009). W badaniach uczestniczyło 51 nauczycieli bialskich szkół podstawowych, gimnazjalnych i ponadgimnazjalnych.
The aim of this study was to investigate the views of teachers of physical education on the realization of the process of physical education for girls and the program of reforms (1999, 2009). The study involved 51 teachers from the Bialskie primary schools, secondary and post-secondary schools. Diagnostic survey method was used while the applied research tool was a questionnaire. Most teachers systematically prepare for lessons and motivate pupils to co-create them. Implementation of the department “Rhythm-Music-Dance” was frequently declared by junior high school teachers. Reluctance to their conduct resulted from insufficient knowledge and lack of skills of some teachers. Most teachers prefer to work in line with the reform of 1999. Teachers also reacted positively to the changes in 2009, on the division of content into the obligatory and optional ones.

Previous research suggests that teachers’ behaviour is influenced by educational beliefs and attitudes. This article focuses on two explorative studies among 99 and 18 physical education teachers, and aims to find out if educational beliefs and acculturation attitudes influence teachers’ willingness and behaviour to promote students’ intercultural competence through physical education lessons. The research design is based on a mixed-method approach. By interlocking quantitative and qualitative data, a mismatch between the expressed willingness and the real behaviour is uncovered. Educational beliefs influence the willingness but not the behaviour, whereas acculturation attitudes do not have any significant influence on the expressed willingness or on the behaviour. The impact depends on the accessibility of the namely constructs that is attained by reflection. Therefore, teacher education must be more than the conveyance of knowledge and techniques but provides teachers with strategies to reflect on their belief systems and their implication on teaching.

The high school students are aware that physical activity is an important part of a healthy way of chewing. We are happy to undertake physical activity outside of physical education classes. It has been shown that boys often use forms of organized physical activity, while the girls of the individual. Both boys and girls frequently pointed out that the guiding impetus for making the activity is to improve the health and the desire to improve. For girls desire to achieve a healthy weight was important incentive to undertake physical activity than boys. The study also confirmed that the lack of desire, lack of time and fatigue are the most common barriers to making physical activity of youth. Replies both boys and girls were mostly questions converge, indicating little relevance to gender in this study.
