Opis:
X´ theory was a major milestone in the history of the development of generative grammar.1 It enabled important insights to be made into the phrase structure of human language, but it had a number of weaknesses, and has been essentially replaced in Chomskyan generativism by Bare Phrase Structure (BPS), which assumes fewer theoretical primitives than X´ theory, and also avoids several of the latter’s weaknesses. However, Bare Phrase Structure has not been widely adopted outside the Minimalist Program (MP), rather, X´ theory remains widespread. In this paper, we develop a new, fully formalized approach to phrase structure which incorporates insights and advances from BPS, but does not require the Minimalist-specific assumptions that come with BPS. We formulate our proposal within Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), providing an empirically and theoretically superior model for phrase structure compared with standard versions of X´ theory current in LFG.

L’objectif du présent article est de voir quels sont les critères retenus et comment est définie la phrase dans les ouvrages de référence français et polonais. La réflexion porte aussi sur l’élément central et la forme minimale de la phrase dans les deux langues. Ainsi sont présentées deux conceptions concurrentes qui se partagent – dans des proportions différentes pour chaque langue – les suffrages des chercheurs : celle qui prône le dictat du verbe et celle qui “répartit les pouvoirs” entre le sujet et le verbe.
The goal of this research proposal is to present the criteria used to define a sentence in French and Polish reference works. The discussion also focuses on the central element and the minimal formation of a sentence in these two languages. Accordingly, there are two concurrent conceptions described which are more or less widely adopted by scientists and researchers: the “diktat” of the verb and the partnership between the verb and its subject.

Opis:
The study focuses on nominal groups referring to parents of peasant origin excerpted from Września-based baptismal registers (liber baptisatorum). The fundamental aim of the study is to show to what extent the folk population in the region was identified solely on the basis of a name and to what extent was the identification based on a combination of the name and the surname. It is also important to indicate whether the identification process included other elements of the noun phrase based on anthroponimic stems. Further on, it is also important to determine what type of additional and auxiliary identifying determinators are to be found with the appearing anthroponymic element. The observations done so far demonstrate that the two-element paradigm for personal identification (already common in nominal groups with reference to members of nobility and to burghers) of people that belonged to the peasantry, is used in the texts under scrutiny only to a very low degree. As the numerical data suggests, more than 80% of parents are identified by the second name only. Additional identifying elements do occur, however, in groups based on names (without the surname element). The study demonstrates that the localyzing determinator is dominant. Determinators indicating occupation, type of craft made and the current occupation of the person are also frequent. The groups under consideration also include determinators that indicate economic status of the person, though they are much rarer. The situation changes in groups with an additional surname determinator. Here, there are only two types of the determinator to be found: localizing determinator and one that indicates the economic status of a given person.

Opis:
The relation between syntax and prosody is evident, even if the prosodic structure cannot be directly mapped to the syntactic one and vice versa. Syntax-to-prosody mapping is widely used in text-to-speech applications, but prosody-to-syntax mapping is mostly missing from automatic speech recognition/understanding systems. This paper presents an experiment towards filling this gap and evaluating whether a HMM-based automatic prosodic segmentation tool can be used to support the reconstruction of the syntactic structure directly from speech. Results show that up to 85% of syntactic clause boundaries and up to about 70% of embedded syntactic phrase boundaries could be identified based on the detection of phonological phrases. Recall rates do not depend further on syntactic layering, in other words, whether the phrase is multiply embedded or not. Clause boundaries can be well assigned to intonational phrase level in read speech and can be well separated from lower level syntactic phrases based on the type of the aligned phonological phrase(s). These findings can be exploited in speech understanding systems, allowing for the recovery of the skeleton of the syntactic structure, based purely on the speech signal.

The role of proverbs in the work of great Romantics was carefully analyzed, yet it was done long ago. In 1958, Stanisław Świrko studied proverbs used in Pan Tadeusz-, in 1964, Jan Mirosław Kasjan gave consideration to the use of proverbs and colloąuial metaphors in Słowacki’s works. Afterwards, that issue was only occasionally considered. The author retums to those works years later, recounts them and updates the look at that issue. In doing so, she draws the inspiration from culture experts. Walter Ong is used tor describing Mickiewicz’s nobility and folk proverbs, deeply rooted in orał culture; Jan Mukarowsky enables the author to comment on the aristocratic and noble cultural context of Słowacki’s proverbs, established in high literary culture. It allows the author to demonstrate how different the materiał they both use is (hardly any proverb is repeated in the two works) and how differently the two Romantic master writers operate that materiał

The author draws attention in the text to the fixed phrases functioning in the Polish and Russian languages, whose lexical components, on joining to form the phrase, are in contradiction to the norms of the so called semantic valence. The phrases are an echo of the rules of the carnival concept of the ≪world upside-down≫, in which all existnig norms and rules are transgressed. The analysed phrase corpus permits a conclusion that it is in its entirety anthropocentric of character and refers to various aspects of evaluating of man. The examined phrases are not only exaples of peculiar innovations in phrase units, but also result of deliberate act of creation, based on rules of carnivalisation of language.

Opis:
The article deals with the problem of a possible pleonastic interpretation of the constructions with particle as verb adjunct and a preposition semantically and partly formally corresponding with it. The topic concerns one aspect of the local modification of verbs. The focus of the analysis is on prepositional and adverbial verb particles. They are separable verbs. The classification into single particles and double particles is carried out, as well as their morphological and semantic difference is discussed. The controversial status of the separable part of the verb is also discussed. The constructions discussed here consist of a preposition that indicates a goal, starting point, or distance of the movement, and a particle that names the direction and reference point from which the movement originates. Although the topic of verb particles has been treated broadly, what status verb particles and prepositions have in constructions remains open. Do such compounds as climb up the mountain or stick to the blackboard bring additional information and are optional, or are they necessary for understanding localization? The assumption that the constructions are pleonasms, that is, words with the same meaning, is rejected in the article. Both the preposition and the verb particle have their semantic function.

Opis:
In Old English, negative adjectives, i.e. incorporating the negative prefix -un, are said to generally come in postposition to nouns (e.g. Fischer, 2001; Sampson, 2010). This paper investigates to what extent this general rule is followed in Aelfric’s Catholic Homilies, the texts of this author being a typical choice for the study of Old English syntax (cf. Davis 2006; Reszkiewcz, 1966; Kohonen, 1978). The data have been obtained from the York-Toronto-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Old English Prose (YCOE). The following research questions have been formulated: Do strong negative adjectives outnumber nonnegated adjectives in postposition? Do strong negative adjectives have a tendency to appear in postposition? Do strong negated adjectives occur in preposition? The results indicated that for the sample analyzed, strong adjectives in postposition are not predominantly negated. Additionally, the postposition of most of those which are may potentially be explained by other factors, such as modification by a prepositional phrase, co-occurrence with a weak preposed adjective (both mentioned by Fischer), or indirect Latin influence in a formulaic phrase. Also, the data does not appear to support the observation that negated adjectives tend to appear in post- rather than preposition.
