Opis:
Low-rank coals of the same rank level but of different genetic types and different tendency to self-ignition have been studied by means of coal chemistry. It has been shown that oxygen- and sulphur-containing functional groups, especially bridge-bonds, are responsible for the structure and properties of pyrolysis products.

Opis:
Petrographic, cathodoluminescence, and phase chemistry studies of detrital grains were carried out on sandstones from the Permian Malužiná Formation in the Malé Karpaty Mts. (Hronic Unit, Western Carpathians, Slovakia) to determine their provenance and tectonic setting during the Permian. The results of the present study suggest derivation of the Malužiná Formation sandstones from multiple source areas. Major source lithologies were acid (felsic) plutonic rocks and low- to high-grade metamorphic rocks (probably metamorphosed igneous rocks and metasedimentary rocks), but notable amounts of detritus were also derived from felsic and mafic volcanic rocks. There was only a minor contribution from sedimentary rocks. Detritus was stripped rapidly from broken, high-relief source areas before weathering processes could destroy unstable framework constituents, as documented by the relatively high content of unstable rock fragments and the high feldspar content in the sandstones investigated. The provenance characteristics indicate that deposition of the sandstones of the Malužiná Formation occurred in a rifted continental margin environment supplied from an uplifted area on a thick continental crust composed of rocks of older fold belts.

The study was carried out in the wall of a cliff that formed as a result of erosional cutting in the western foreland of a moraine landform from the Pomeranian and Gardno phases (Upper Plenivistulian, Rowy-Ustka clifs; northern Poland). Individual lithostratigraphic units have been documented: glaciofluvial delta deposlts, Poddąbie Till, lacustrine-glacial Wytowno Formation (consisting of three facies: deltaic, lower diamicton, and upper diamicton), lacustrine deposits of the Orzechowo Formation with a thick peat layer, and aeolian series at the cliff crest. The Wytowno Formation deposits include the following lithologies: medium-grained sands, fine-grained sands, muddy sands, muds, silty clays, clays, varved clays, fine-grained multi-fraction deposits, and tills (Dębina Till). Very high inclination of the strata is the result of glaciodynamic deformation. The deposits were accumulated in a proglacial lake. They are characterized by mud and clay as well as sand and sand-muddy lithofacies. The vastness of the water body is evidenced by a considerable size of the delta, and by massive structures of the clay layers.

Opis:
he Upper Cretaceous Ajali Sandstone is an extensive stratigraphic unit of the Anambra Basin in southern Nigeria. It consists of friable, white cross-bedded sandstones exhibiting a fining upward sequence. Structures such as bioturbation, planar and herringbone cross beds indicate variability in depositional environment ranging from fluviatile to deltaic. Petrographic and geochemical compositions (major and trace elements) of these sandstones have been investigated to determine their provenance, tectonic setting and weathering conditions. Fifteen sandstone samples examined are rich in quartz but poor in feldspar and lithic fragments. Texturally, the framework grains of the sandstones are fine- to medium-grained, sub-angular to sub-rounded, moderately sorted to poorly sorted, positively skewed and leptokurtic. The sandstones are texturally immature as depicted by their sub-angular edges of grains, but mineralogically mature in terms of high percentage of quartz. The high chemical index of alteration (CIA) values (71.0–99.2%) for these sandstones suggests that they were derived from highly weathered rocks in the source area. The composition of the major oxides in the sandstones revealed that SiO2 (49.1–99.7%), Al2O3 (0.2–30.3%), Fe2O3 (0.4–1.8%) and TiO2 (0.06–3.2%) were the most abundant elements in all sandstone samples indicating a high detrital quartz and clay mineral content. The Al2O3/TiO2 ratios (1.47 to 12.48), Ti/Zr (6.48–18.63) and Zr/Cr (2.24–22.36) suggest that the sandstones were derived from variable basement complex rocks, including some contribution from mafic or ultramafic components. Inferences from the plots of K2O/Na2O versus SiO2 indicated a passive margin tectonic setting for the sandstones. The high loading of CaO and Na2O in more than 50% of the samples is indicative of terrigenous input, mainly in the form of carbonates and silicates. These results are generally consistent with a derivation of the sandstones from adjacent igneous and metamorphic basement complexes (Cameroon–Adamawa highlands and Oban Massif) while the extensive and blanket-like geometry of the Ajali Sandstone is indicative of an excellent reservoir for groundwater in the Anambra Basin.

Specialist analysis of ceramics helps to identify the raw material used for their production and to determine whether the material was chosen deliberately for its specific parameters. The present study of Neolithic vessels and of sampled raw materials has shown that Linear Pottery population tended to use plastic Miocene clay, but silty alluvial loam was equally popular. A comparison between the types of vessels and ceramic bodies has proven that thin-walled vessels were more often made of material with a high content of grains of silty fraction, while thick-walled vessels were usually shaped from heavy clay. This suggests that there were certain rules to be observed when preparing the paste, despite the local diversity of raw materials

El-Hudi gold deposit, located in the South Eastern Desert of Egypt, represent large vein- type gold occurrence. The representative sample revealed the abundance of quartz as main constituent with minor amounts of mineral impurities. Gold was detectable (12 g/t) as determined using atomic absorption. The petrographic study revealed that the gold grains ranged from 10-40 μm. The grain boundaries of quartz are highly stained with iron minerals as hematite and limonite. Sericite mineral is common in discrete gold-bearing veins. Eroded pyrite was detected with high alteration leaving only cubic-shaped cavities behind. Different techniques for gravity separation were used to separate gold from the quartz mineral. After crushing and grinding of the sample, shaking table was used to upgrade the coarser fractions while Falcon concentrator was employed to upgrade the fine fraction. The best concentrate was obtained through grinding the whole sample to less than 0.2 mm, followed by cleaning steps. The gold content is increased from 12 to 145 g/t with total recovery of 78%.

The Niestachów profile is located in the southwestern part of the Holy Cross Mountains and exposes lower Ludlovian greywacke sediments of the Niewachlów Beds that occur above graptolitic claystones of the Prągowiec Beds. Within the sequence of lithologically diversified Niewachlów Beds, more than 400 m thick, 11 characteristic lithologic complexes were identified. The lower and upper parts of the Niewachlów Beds comprise fine- and medium-grained greywacke sandstones with mudstone interbeds, whereas the middle part contains coarse-grained greywacke sandstones and conglomerates. The sediments were transported by “turbiditic currents” from the southwest. Petrographic examination of the upper part of the Prągowiec Beds and the Niewachlów Beds indicates that the greywacke conglomerates and sandstones of the Niewachlów Beds are composed primarily of volcanic and sedimentary lithoclasts, with subordinate metamorphic and scarce plutonic lithoclasts. The sandstones and conglomerates were derived from an orogen containing sandstones and mudstones as well as from the magmatic rocks of a continental volcanic arc, characterized by acidic-intermediate volcanism.

Applying new technologies basing on coal utilization demands precise identification of coal-bed composition. It is suggested, that such possibility is enabled by coal-bed logging with use of - adjusted to this aim - microlithotype analysis. Modification of this research method relies on ten-fold augmentation of 20 point grid size dimensions - up to 500 x 500 [...]. Maceral associations - as identified duringmicroscope observations - are placed in computer database according to their localization in logging. This allows for later graphic interpretation - microlithotype profile drawing. 13 associations has been educed in description, in majority being consistent with commonly used microlithotypes. However, a few changes has been introduced: in description of vitrite, telovitrite, macroscopically recognized in logging as vitrine layers, has been distinguished, as well as detro-gelo-vitrite, macroscopically recognized in logging as durain, while within bimaceralic microlithotypes there has been distinguished: vitrinertite (W), vitrinertite (I), clarite (W), clarite (I), durite (L), durite (I), all on the basis of dominant ingredient named in parenthesis. Accepted research methodology enables precise characteristics of petrographic variation within coal-bed logging. This allows especially to describe variation within dull coal (durain). Basing on research results, it is suggested that the biggest share in seam composition belongs to duroclarite - 23.8%, then vitrite - 18.7% and clarodurite - 17.6%, lower share of few percent belongs to: vitrinertite (I), vitrinertite (W), inertite, clarite (W), vitrinertoliptite, durite (I), durite (L), while both liptite and clarite (L) are less than one percent . Sequence of following microlithotypes also illustrate facies variation, what allows interpretation of environments of peat deposition in paleo-peat bog 116/2. Dominating percentage in log belongs to Forest Moor facies - 33.5%, while the lowest is Forest Terrestial Moor - 12.5%.

Measurements of 697 chondrules in an area of 250 m2 enabled distinction of three populations. The chondrules and olivine crystals have been sintered at high temperatures. Six structural types showing transitions between porphyritic and granular structures have been discriminated. Rims showing a similar diversity surround about 10% of chondrules. The composition and structure of the chondrules suggest a source from the nebular dust disk around the Sun. The abudance of voids and their relatively large size and a lack of fissures, indicate a small size of the host body, which must have been derived from an early phase of protoplanet formation.

The first site in western Poland with a red till lithotype has been discovered in the Trzebnica Hills, southwestern Poland. This is a clay-rich, red till with dominant East-Baltic material (East-Baltic lithotypes). The red till forms the uppermost part of the Borowiec Till, a till from the Sanian 2 (Elsterian) Glaciation. Moreover, some Borowiec tills in the Barycz River valley (north) and the Prosna River valley (east) contain in their uppermost parts a dolomite-rich horizon, which, although only greyish-brown, also represents the East-Baltic till lithotypes. The late Elsterian ice sheet in Poland was developed as several ice-lobes with different ice dynamics. The lobes from western Poland advanced to their maximum extent earlier than the eastern lobes. In the latest phase of the glaciation, the western lobes retreated, while the eastern ones advanced from NE to SW. Their presence is proved by deposition of the Borowiec Till and East-Baltic till lithotypes.

The Hoanh Bo Basin has developed over multiple periods since the Miocene period in association with the tectonic activity of the Chi Linh-Hon Gai and Trung Luong Faults. The basin is filled with Neogene continental sediments, comprising mainly polymictic conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, claystones, and shales. Coarser-grained polymictic deposits predominate along the northern and western margins of the basin, whereas different types of siltstones, claystones, and sandstones occur in its centre, as well as along its southern and eastern parts, toward the Ha Long Bay. The conglomerates and sandstones are composed mainly of quartz and sedimentary rock fragments, and a small amount of mica. Cement is mainly built of iron-oxide, clay or carbonate mud. The source area for the Hoanh Bo Basin sediments was located in the close vicinity of the basin. It was built of strongly weathered rocks of the Hon Gai, Ha Coi, Cat Ba Formations.

Opis:
The Middle Eocene Akhoreh Formation is superbly exposed in the western corner of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent (CEIM). This formation covered the northeastern flank of the Cretaceous Nain Ophiolite Mélange (NOM) and is adjacent to the Paleogene Urmieh–Dokhtar Magmatic Arc (UDMA) formed in the southwest of the CEIM. This terrigenous succession is composed of a thin basal conglomerate followed by mostly pink to purple sandstones alternating with shales. The clast composition and clast imbrication of the conglomerates show local source areas towards the north-north-east. Modal components of lower Akhoreh Formation sandstones reveals immature lithic arkose (Q8F48L44) and feldspathic litharenite (Q8F44L48) sandstones that are rich in mafic and ultramafic igneous and volcanic rock fragments. Mafic to ultramafic source rocks are also indicated by geochemical data (enrichment of Mg, Cr and Ni and Cr/V) in the sandstone and shale samples analyzed. However, geochemical data suggests an intermediate igneous rock origin for the shale samples studied, most likely from the nearby continental arc. Based on petrographic data, these sandstones have characteristics of a transitional to undissected arc tectonic setting. Geochemical discrimination diagrams using major and trace elements indicate an oceanic island arc tectonic setting for the lower Akhoreh Formation sandstones and shales, probably due to a predominance of ophiolitic source rocks. Furthermore, the chemical index of alteration and modal analysis indicate a weak to moderate degree of chemical weathering with arid climatic conditions in the source area. The exhumed NOM, together with the UDMA in the southwest, were dominant sources of sediment to the lower Akhoreh Formation, that lay to the northeast in a local retroarc basin of the Central Iranian Microplate, during the Middle Eocene.

The text shows the results of the petrographic analysis of stone artifacts from site Grabowiec. Out of set of 87 stones, 19 artifacts made of stones were selected and underwent a petrographic analysis. The main goal of the conducted research was to identify the type of rock raw material used for execution of tools. Petrographic analyses consisted in drawing up an assessment and macroscopic description of a rock material, from which artifacts were made. The macroscopic description was enlarged by a study using binocular magnifying glass, in order to precisely define: overall external features of rocks (colour, degree of vapidity, compactness), structure and texture and the type of rock-forming minerals. On the basis of the petrographic study, the type of the used raw material was determined.

Opis:
The pottery samples under investigation in this study include the findings of the Astankroud 2 Site in the Kojur region of western Mazandaran Province. The site was uncovered during an archaeological survey of the region in 2010 and has been thus far the easternmost site of Kura-Araxes. Considering the importance of discussions concerning the characteristics of this culture and the reasons for its spread in a vast geographic area extending from the southern coast of the Caspian Sea to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, 15 pottery pieces of Kura-Araxes were subject to petrographic study in order to determine the mineralogy structure of the pottery recovered from Astanakroud Site. The experiments on these pieces were conducted using a polarizing microscope (James Swift) at the Petrographic Laboratory of the Institute for Protection and Restoration of Works affiliated with Cultural Heritage Research. According to the results of experiments, it was revealed that all the pottery had been locally produced. A petrographic study of Astanakroud pottery reveals that the pottery has been produced using soil resulting from erosion of geological structure in the northern part of the Kojur region (with volcanic structure) that has been washed up by natural currents traversing the valleys of Nimvar, Avil, and Kouhpar to the foot of the site.

Opis:
Charakterystykę petrograficzną i facjalną węgla przeprowadzono na podstawie opisu litotypów i ich charakterystyki petrograficznej. Za główny czynnik warunkujący proces sedymentacji torfu przyjęto poziom zwierciadła wody w torfowisku, za którym podążała sukcesja roślin zasiedlających torfowisko, a deponowane szczątki roślinne były poddawane procesom żelifikacji lub oksydacji. Wyróżniono trzy środowiska obejmujące strefę sedymentacji torfu: torfowisko trwale podtopione z dwoma subśrodowiskami - strefą brzeżną i centralną, torfowisko okresowo podtopione z dwoma subśrodowiskami - podtopionym i przesuszonym, torfowisko wyniesione z dwoma subśrodowiskami - progresywnym i regresywnym. Subśrodowisko brzeżne obejmuje strefę peryferyjną jezior lub rozlewiska rzecznego, gdzie nie zachodziła akumulacja torfu.
The composition of coal and deposition environment characterization were made based on lithotype and maceral analyses. The proposed facies are based on an assumption that oscillations of water table in a peat-bog affect the petrographic composition of coal, while stronger influxes of water table into the peat-bog increase the content of mineral matter in coal. The author has identified three major types of peat-bog environments in which plant material was deposited in the Carboniferous period. There are: permanently inundated-planar mire (PM) with two sub-environments - PM "margin" and PM "central", temporarily inundated-transitional mire (TM) with two sub-environments - TM "wet" and TM "dry", and elevated-domed mire (DM) with two sub-environments - DM "progressive" and DM "regressive".

Opis:
Petrography of the Triassic Narrabeen Group (Southern Sydney Basin of Australia) was described by thin section, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction techniques. Sandstone composition includes mostly lithic grains with minor quartz, feldspar, mica and heavy minerals; litharenites and sublitharenites are common and quartzarenites are rare. Quartz includes monocrystalline and polycrystalline grains while the feldspar includes both K-feldspar and plagioclase. Volcanic, sedimentary and chert rock fragments are present. In thin section porosity is visible in all units, particularly the coarse-grained deposits. Secondary porosity is greater than the primary porosity. The diagenetic alterations include compaction, quartz overgrowths, authigenic clay minerals, carbonate cement and authigenic feldspar. Compaction occurred in all units during diagenesis. Both early and late diagenetic carbonate cement is important in the Narrabeen Group. Pore-filling carbonate cement reduced porosity whereas dissolution of carbonate resulted in secondary porosity. Authigenic clay minerals are widespread in all units filling pores and occurring as grain-coatings on detrital and authigenic grains. Where they coat quartz grains they preserve porosity by preventing growth of quartz overgrowths. Dissolution of unstable feldspar and lithic grains provided secondary porosity. In the Narrabeen Group, shale and siltstone are abundant in the Wombarra Claystone, Stanwell Park Claystone, Bald Hill Claystone and Newport Formation, forming lithological seals and confining layers. Minor sandstone beds occur in the Wombarra Claystone and contain more porosity. Medium- and coarse-grained sandstone is common in the Coalcliff Sandstone, Scarborough Sandstone and Bulgo Sandstone and shows low to moderate porosity. Thus, these sandstone units probably contain gas or water.

Opis:
This paper summarizes information about recently worked bentonite deposits in Slovakia and presents the results of studies on bentonite from the Central Slovakia Volcanic Field (CSVF). The authors compared the mineralogy of commercial bentonites exploited in the Stara Kremnička (Jelšový potok), Kopernica, and Hliník nad Hronom deposits. X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analyses and microscopy showed that the main component is montmorillonite (37–88%), followed by opal C/CT (5–25%), clinoptilolite (up to 15%), feldspars (3–12%), quartz (up to 8%), biotite (2–5%), and kaolinite (up to 2%). The microscopic imaging provided information valuable for the technological assessment of bentonites, particularly the evaluation of mineralogy determined by XRD. The low variability of the mineral composition of commercial bentonites exploited in the western CSVF, together with the significant reserves and localization of deposits close to the Polish–Slovak state border prove that this raw material deserves more attention from Polish industry.

The Silurian rocks of the Peri-Baltic Depression area (N Poland) were penetrated by 208 boreholes (Fig. 1). Seven new formal lithostratigraphical units were recognized and defined: The Barciany Nodular Limestones Formation (Lower Llandoverian–Rhuddnian, Aeronian), the Pasłęk Bituminous Claystones Formation with the Jantar Bituminous Black Claystone Member (Llandoverian), the Pelplin Green Claystones Formation (Wenlockian–Ludlovian), the Kociewie Claystones and Siltstones Formation with the Reda Marly Siltstones Member (Wenlockian–Ludlovian) and the Puck Marly Claystones and Siltstones Formation (Ludlovian (Ludfordian)–Pridolian). Some of the units have a character of the allostratigraphical ones sensu „North American...”, (1983) because are bordered by the sedimentary or sedimentary-erosional unconformities. The lithology, stratigraphical position, thickness, paleontological data and spatial relation of the particular units are presented (Fig. 2). Their boundaries have been established and stratotypic sections are proposed. Rock sequences of different Formations have been correlated with lithostratigraphical and genetical equivalents of the adjacent regions of Lithuania and Russia (Kaliningrad District) and also with Denmark (Bornholm) and Germany (western part of the Peri-Baltic Depression).

Opis:
Black limestone, also known as black "marble", was widely used in the Polish small-scale architecture and art of the 17th and 18th centuries. Besides the Devonian limestone from Dębnik near Krakow, also popular were the Netherlandish (Wallonian), Devonian to Carboniferous limestones from the Meuse River and Schelde River valleys. This paper deals with the possibility of identifying the rocks imported to Poland. Macroscopic similarities between the Netherlandish rocks and some Dębnik limestones have been highlighted for the oldest Carmelite quarry in Dębnik, exploiting the best stones. The analyses include: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (13 C and 18 O stable isotopes). Carboniferous limestones from Netherlands can be identified within and distinguished from the Dębnik limestone in the macroscopic observations. Differences, depending on the varieties, are associated primarily with the presence of white calcite fragments of fossils, calcite veins intersecting the rock in all directions or hardness of the limestones. Deeply black Devonian limestones from Wallonia and Dębnik without macrofossils and calcite veins differ in microscopic observations considering their texture, type of microfossils and inventory of non-carbonate components. The characteristic graying and whitening of the black limestones has also been discussed as a possible feature of rock provenance.

The aim of the work was to characterize in coalification parameters (moisture content Wa, volatile matter Vdaf and random reflectance of vitrinite R) and changes in petrographical composition of coal from the Bzie Dębina drillhole (BD 57). The object of examination were representative coal seams from the BD 57 drillhole. It was found increase of coal rank is expressed by a reduction of moisture content and volatile matter and the increase reflectance with depth. In petrographic composition vitrinite group macerals (Vtmmf= 65.8-91.0%) dominate over the inertinite group (Immf = 6.2-28.4). Participatiof liptinite maceral group is low (Lmmf = 1.9-5.8%). Inertinite macerals group participation does not increase with coal rank, unlike in the Zofiówka monocline.

Kamienie młyńskie od wieków były głównym elementem systemu roboczego zakładów napędzanych siłą wody i wiatru. Te niezwykle cenne zabytki kultury materialnej rozpoznane są jednak w nieznacznym zakresie. W ostatnich latach widoczna jest intensyfikacja interdyscyplinarnych metod badawczych w molinologii. Jedną z nich są badania petrograficzne kamieni młyńskich. W polskich opracowaniach brak jednak takiego ujęcia.
Millstones have been the main element of the working system of plants powered by water and wind for centuries. However, these extremely valuable monuments of material culture are recognized to a rather small extent. Recent years have seen a certain intensification of interdisciplinary research in the field of molinology. One of them is petrographic study of millstones. Yet, Polish studies still lack this kind of approach. This paper is aimed at determining the types of rocks, their origins and functions within the mill structure. In a group of fifteen stones, three were made of artificial stone, eight turned out to be quartz sandstones, one is made of granite and one of quartz anorthosite, two proved to be made of sedimentary siliceous rock. Certain rocks have been determined to be of German or French origin, whereas the others could have been acquired locally.

The Brandenburg section of the hinterland and of the maximum extent of the Pommeranian phase of the last glaciation, formed in two lobes (Schulz, 1967): Joachimsthal-Ringenwalder and Ucker-markischer, have been covered by a study on petrography of a gravelly and a stony fraction. The methods applied followed suggestions of Bose (1989), Trembaczowski (1961, 1967), Meyer (1983), Smed (1993, 1994) and Zandstra (1999). Petrographical analyses undertaken in Uckermark, NE Germany, were focused on: 1) observation of the dynamics of petrographical features along and in the hinterland of the Odra lobus on the German side, 2) indication of the western limit of the Odra lobus upon petrography of glacial sediments, 3) indication of Scandinavian parent areas of sediments of the Pommeranian phase and estimating the routes of ice-sheet onto German Lowland. The distance between outcrops of Scandinavian rocks causes the number of erratics in sediments of glacial accumulation in the German part of the Odra lobus. There are more Mesosoic rocks in the gravelly fraction as compared with sediments of the same age, but sampled in the Polish part of the Odra lobus. The stony fraction (20-60 mm) is represented mainly by indicator erratics from Smĺland and the Swedish coast in Kalmar Strait. Ĺland erratics, quite frequent in Polish lowlands, are observed rarely in Uckermark. Among statistical erratics there are numerous flints and Mesosoic limestones as well as Lower-Palaeozoic limestones. The theoretical stone centre moves its locality within middle-southern Smĺland.

Glacial erratics of the Oslo region are only occasionally found in Poland. This is because the Norwegian Channel ice stream did not reach this area. Recently a few specimens of rocks representing Oslo region have been found at the Owczary site (north-western Poland), what raised questions regarding the relative age of the deposits, as well as the depositional history of the erratics. The questions were addressed using lithofacies analysis, as well as structural and textural analyses, combined with clast petrography (medium and coarse gravel). Clast petrography analysis revealed that the deposits containing rocks of the Oslo region are of the late Saalian age (Warthe), though some evidence suggest the early Saalian age (Drenthe).

Opis:
The Rock-Eval source rock characteristics, mineral composition and type-porosity of reservoir horizons, and origin of natural gas in the Devonian of the Lublin and Lviv basins are described. In the Lower Devonian, the TOC content ranges from 0.01 to 1.82 wt.% in the Lublin Basin, and from 0.01 to 0.45 wt.% in the Lviv Basin. Transformation of organic matter varies from immature in the Lochkovian (Lviv Basin) to mature and overmature in the Emsian (Lublin Basin). The organic matter contains mainly Type-II kerogen, and underwent primary and/or secondary oxidation processes. In the Middle Devonian, the TOC content varies from 0.00 to 1.63 wt.% in the Lublin Basin, and from 0.02 to 0.64 to 2.35 wt.% in the Lviv Basin. The organic matter contains mainly Type-II kerogen and is immature in the Givetian of the Lviv Basin and mature in the Eifelian of the Lviv Basin and in the Eifelian and Givetian in the Lublin Basin. In the Upper Devonian, the TOC content is from 0.02 to 2.62 wt.% in the Lublin Basin, and from 0.04 to 1.43 wt.% in the Lviv Basin. Type-II kerogen dominates in both basins. Organic matter is mature in the Upper Devonian in the Lublin Basin and in the Famennian of the Lviv Basin and overmature in the Frasnian of the Lviv Basin. The reservoir horizons in the Devonian of the Lublin and Lviv basins are developed in clastic, carbonate and sulphate rocks. Terrigenous rocks form several separate horizons in the Lower and Middle Devonian of the Lviv Basin, and in the Upper Devonian (Famennian) of the Lublin Basin. Their filtration properties relate to intergranular porosity, while the fracture space has subordinate significance. Carbonate rocks form thick saturated horizons in the Givetian in the Lviv Basin, and in the Eifelian, Givetian and Frasnian in the Lublin Basin. Their filtration properties are produced by fracture porosity. Sulphates and carbonate-sulphate rocks with fracture and cavern porosity play a role as reservoir horizons in the Middle Devonian of the Lublin Basin. The natural gas collected from the Upper Devonian of the Lublin Basin was generated mainly during low-temperature thermogenic processes, from Ordovician–Silurian Type-II kerogen. The gas from the Middle Devonian reservoirs of the Lviv Basin was produced from Ordovician–Silurian Type-II kerogen and partly from the Middle and Upper Devonian mixed Type-III/II kerogen with maturity from about 0.9 to 1.4%. Carbon dioxide was formed by both thermogenic and microbial processes. Molecular nitrogen was generated mainly through thermal transformation of organic matter and also from destruction of NH4-rich illite of the clayey facies of the Ordovician–Silurian strata.

The article presents the results of microtomographic and petrographic investigations of Rotliegend sandstones collected from core material from wells located in the area of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline in its central and northern parts and also on the border of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline and the Mogilno - Łódź Synclinorium. Three areas were selected for the study: Czarna Wieś–Parzęczewo (19 samples), Środa Wielkopolska–Kromolice (21 samples) and Siekierki–Miłosław (21 samples). The aim of the petrologic and microtomographic studies was to investigate how the different reservoir properties of sandstones will be reflected in the results of the methods used. Strong differences between samples from the region of Środa Wielkopolska–Kromolice and the other studied areas have been demonstrated. In the case of this area several key factors were noticed: the highest average value of effective porosity; the highest average content of pores belonging to class VII (pore volume subsystem classification); three times higher average value of the CT porosity coefficient and the largest length of the average chord. Also in terms of petrography (composition of grains, cement type) it is a region where major differences, especially compared to the region of Czarna Wieś–Parzęczewo, can be seen. Based on the obtained results, it was possible to rank the examined regions in terms of their reservoir properties – from the worst (Czarna Wieś–Parzęczewo) to the best (Środa Wielkopolska–Kromolice). These conclusions are also confirmed by other petrophysical analyses (eg. mercury porosimetry, permeability analysis). Combination of the obtained microtomographic and petrographic results allowed to obtain a full characterization of the investigated samples – both in terms of the mineralogical composition of grains, as well as the development of the pore space. These data, especially in combination with the results of density and porosity analyses (helium pycnometry and mercury porosimetry), open up a number of possibilities to carry out different types of modeling (porosity, permeability) both on the scale of the sample itself, as well as the scale of a single well or even the whole basin, which is crucial for creating a hydrocarbon exploration strategy.

The St. Elizabeth of Hungary Basilica is one of the most important and recognizable monuments of Wroclaw - the capital of Lower Silesia (SWpart of Poland). The origin of the church dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. The basilica received its present Gothic form in the 14th-15th centuries. At the foot of the church tower, overlooking the buildings of the nearby Market Square, there is a late-Gothic portal built in 1456. This is the oldest portal of the basilica. Adjacent to it, there are epitaphs of wealthy Wroclaw burghers. These monuments are the top-class works of Silesian stonemasonry and also an interesting example of the use of natural stone in constructing architectural details. From the portal and three epitaphs (devoted to the Krapps’family, Georg Althoff Scholz and Hans Schulz von Wolkovitz), atotal often samples of clastic rock were collected. These were subjected to detailed petrographic and mineralogical studies in order to determine the provenance of the stone material. The research confirmed that these architectural details were made of quartz sandstones. The probable source of this material was the Cretaceous joint sandstones from the North-Sudetic Basin (Conacian, upper joint sandstone - Rakowice type).

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a study of methane adsorption on coal samples with various degrees of metamorphism, coming from the Polish and Czech parts of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). The range of coalification of the samples was from bituminous with vitrinite reflectance Ro equal to about 0.5% to para-anthracite coals with Ro equal to over 2%. The methane adsorption capacity was determined at the temperature 303 K for each of the studied coal seams. Methane adsorption isotherms were approximated using the Langmuir model. The relationship between the Langmuir isotherm parameters (am and PL) and the degree of coalification was presented. It was shown that the degree of coalification of the coal substance affects the adsorption ability of coal with respect to methane and determines the value of the Langmuir isotherm parameters. The study was conducted in order to present the distribution of adsorption capacity of Upper Silesian coals in relation to improving work safety in active mines as well as designing technologies that use coal bed methane (CBM) from balance and off-balance resources.

Nowadays, in order to determine whether given rock properties make it useful for specifi c purposes, the material is examined using relevant test equipment. At the times of Jan Michałowicz, any knowledge in this respect was transmitted by the master to his apprentices, based on the master’s experience. The artist used domestic rock raw materials to sculpt monuments commemorating important persons who were his contemporaries. For the petrographic analysis, the authors selected the most distinguishable works of the artist, which he signed or which are most likely to have been sculpted by him. The authors analysed the materials used by the artist to carve specifi c elements of his works, as well as rock raw materials in terms of their historical and contemporary properties. Consequently, the petrographic study allowed to describe the rocks in greater detail, as well as their properties useful for sculpture purposes, and their durability. Artistic qualities helped determine the sources of stones used by Jan Michałowicz during his projects. These include the quarries near Pińczów (limestone), Kunów (sandstone), Bolechowice (marble), Żurawno (alabaster) and initially quarries in Hungary. The discussed works of Jan Michałowicz provide firm grounds for acknowledging the artist as the leading co-founder to Polish Renaissance art.

Opis:
The Upper Cenomanian mixed siliciclastic-carbonate succession of the High-Tatric Unit was deposited during the initial stage of basinal closing of the Tatric area, part of the Zliechov (Križna) Basin (Inner Carpathian domain). As a result of tectonic activity taking place at the northern Veporic margin, pulses of siliciclastic input interrupted marine carbonate sedimentation. The siliciclastic material, part of the Zabijak Formation, has been studied along two sections (Pisana Gully and Zdziarski Gully) in the Western Tatra Mountains. Microfacies, petrographic and geochemical analyses reveal a variability of siliciclastic material composed of various types of granitoids and medium- or high-grade metamorphic rocks, with schists and gneisses. Such interpretation is confirmed by the results of elemental chemical analyses, in which immobile trace elements, such as REE, Th, Cr, Co, Zr, and Y were used as indices for sediment provenance. The parent rocks sustained moderate to intense chemical weathering, documented by chemical weathering indices (CIA, PIA, CIW, R). The weathering occurred in a humid climate with relatively high precipitation that caused strong leaching of particles. Chemical indices related to sorting processes suggest that the recycling of the source material was a minor significance. The siliciclastic input displays a waning upward tendency in the sections, which can be associated with diminishing of the source area by gradual inland progradation of a carbonate platform, caused by a global sea level rise during the Late Cenomanian.

Rocks from the Slyudyanka valley (Khamar-Daban Mountain), near the Pierieval quarry, were analysed for petrographic characteristics. Rocks samples have been investigated with the use of optical and electron microscopes as well as XRD methods. The outcrops on the valley slopes reveal the presence of crystalline schists and marbles with granitoid veins. There are also calciphyres, rich in phlogopite, apatite and diopside. This complex was metamorphosed under the cordierite-biotite-almandine facies. In this rock complex, carbonate-diopside-apatite calciphyres are also present. The complex was deformed, uplifted and intruded by numerous granitoid veins during the process of tectonic rejuvenation of this area.

Opis:
We determine the organic matter content, its thermal maturity, genetic type, and source rock potential of the Miocene sedimentary rocks in the Czech Carpathian Foredeep. In the Czech Republic the Carpathian Foredeep represents a peripheral foreland basin formed due to the tectonic emplacement and loading of the Alpine-Carpathian Thrust Wedge onto the passive margin of the Bohemian Massif. Random vitrinite/huminite reflectance measurements and maceral analyses were performed on 25 samples from the Carpathian Foredeep succession. Additionally, results of 135 TOC content measurements, 141 Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses and 27 vitrinite reflectance measurements were used to evaluate the regional distribution and depth trends for the entire Carpathian Foredeep. The thermal maturity of organic matter is between the immature part and peak of the oil window (Tmax = 413–448°C). Beneath the Western Carpathian Thrust Belt, the thermal maturity reaches higher values (Rr = 0.43–0.58%, Tmax = 429–448°C). The hydrocarbon generation potential is poor or fair, even if the total organic carbon values indicate good or even very good source rock potential. This is mainly due to the prevailing gas-prone Type III kerogen. The best source rocks were observed in the Miocene strata of the southern and central segments of the area discussed.

Unburned organic matter in the fly ash occurs most commonly in the form of solid or porous grains. It has been shown that tested fly ash resulting from the combustion of lignite and hard coal from pulverized boilers contained microparticles belonging to the following groups: aluminosilicates (quartz, mullite), iron oxides, carbonates, and unburned organic matter. The organic matter content in the tested samples is in the range of 3.6–9.5%. Coal particles show a large variation in terms of size and morphology. Their size ranges from a few micrometers to about 1 mm. Several forms of their occurrence can be distinguished. These include: porous, thin and thick-walled spherical forms. In addition, unburned carbonaceous substance creates irregular porous grains with walls of variable thickness. What is more, the tested samples contain macerals from the inertinite group in the form of fusinite showing cellular structure; sometimes these include massive or dense forms. The organic matter in the tested fly ash usually occurs in the form of detrital particles with dimensions below 10 micrometers. There are also coal particles containing mineral admixtures. If the mineral matter content exceeds 50%, the particles are classified as minerals. [...]

Opis:
The importance of rocks and rock aggregates cannot be overemphasized in construction and concrete design globally. This study evaluated the physical and mechanical characteristics of fine grained granite, porphyritic granite, quartzite, granite gneiss, migmatite gneiss and charnockite from ten different locations in Akure for their suitability as construction materials. Field observation, water absorption, specific gravity, shape indices, aggregate impact value (AIV), aggregate crushing value (ACV), Los Angeles abrasion value (LAAV), compressive strength, tensile strength and petrography of the selected rocks were evaluated. The field studies indicate fresh outcrops with little signs of weathering. Porphyritic granite shows a higher water absorption value >1%, suggestive of its unsuitability as foundation materials in water logged areas. The higher flakiness and elongation indices of porphyritic granite, quartzite and migmatite gneiss are detrimental to the higher workability and stability of mixes. AIV (14.79–23.52%), ACV (18.32–28.93%) and LAAV (25.22–34.55%) showed that granite, granite gneiss and charnockite have good soundness and hardness with greater resistance to wear. Higher strength values of all the rocks were found to be satisfactory for use in the production of aggregates for civil constructions. Petrographic analysis revealed similarities in the compositions of the rocks, with quartz being the dominant mineral. The results show that all the rock types possess the required quality standards for use as construction aggregates in highway pavements and foundations. Some of the aggregates (GG1, GG2, GF, GC, MG1, CK1 and CK2) are also suitable for bituminous mixes. Quartzite should be avoided in load bearing masonry units due to its lower strength values. The most suitable rocks proven as road and building stones are fine grained granite, granite gneiss and charnockite because of their low water absorption, low flakiness and elongation indices, low abrasion values, higher strength values (tensile strength and unconfined compressive strength) and sound petrographic characters. Thus, adequate knowledge of rocks and rock aggregates is crucial in order to prevent continuous structural failure around the globe and make the environment friendlier.

Alkali-aggregate reactivity (AAR) is one of the major causes of damage in concrete. Potential susceptibility of aggregates to this reaction can be determined using several methods. This study compares gravel alkali reactivity results obtained from different tests conducted on coarse aggregates with complex petrography. The potential for the reactivity in the aggregates was revealed in the chemical test using treatment with sodium hydroxide. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to identify the reactive constituents. The expansion measured in the mortar bars test confirmed that the aggregate was potentially capable of alkali silica reactivity with consequent deleterious effect on concrete.

In the Holy Cross Mountains, Middle Givetian terrigenous deposits occur only in the Łysogóry region. In its eastern part they are found between claystones of the Skały Beds and biostromal limestones of the Pokrzywianka Beds, whereas in the western part - between claystones of the Skały Beds and the Nieczulice Beds. These deposits are ascribed to the Świętomarz Beds and consist of mudstones and sandstones reaching about 100 m in thickness. The sandstones encompass fine-grained quartz arenites, calcareous quartz arenites, rare sublithic arenites, quartz and sublithic wackes, being subordinate to laminated mudstones with plant remnants. The same petrographic characteristics are exhibited by the Żniatyń Member known from borehole Terebin IG 4 of the SE Lublin area. The source of detritic material for the Świętomarz Beds and the Żniatyn Member were recycled orogen built of siliciclastic rocks and a cratonic zone of the continental block. The terrigenous material was delivered to the Middle Devonian Łysogóry basin from the south-east through a deltaic system. The depositional environment was a proximal and distal area of prodelta that prograded to the west.

Przeprowadzono masowe pomiary kształtu i kątów dwuściennych ziarn kilku frakcji kruszywa granitowego, bazaltowego, piaskowcowego i wapiennego, uzyskanego w tym samym urządzeniu kruszącym. Rezultaty analizowano z uwzględnieniem wyników pomiarów orientacji i intensywności płaszczyzn podzielności skał w miejscach pobrania prób. Stwierdzono istnienie zależności pomiędzy udziałem ziaren nieforemnych w kruszywie a intensywnością spękań w różnych zespołach, a także strukturą i teksturą skały. Izometryczne ziarna kruszyw występują najczęściej w skałach o podobnym nasileniu występowania płaszczyzn podzielności poszczególnych zespołów. W drobniejszych frakcjach jest więcej ziaren nieforemnych niż we frakcjach grubszych. Wynika to z rosnącej przewagi wpływu cech teksturalnych nad ciosem wraz z drobnieniem ziaren.
The aspect (axial) ratios and dihedral angles were measured for a large number of particles of granite, basalt, sandstone and limestone aggregates, prepared in the same crusher. Joints orientation and intensity in the places of sampling were taken into consideration in analysis. It was found that content of irregular (flaky and elongated) aggregate grains is related to the intensity of joint sets observed in the quarry and to the rock structure (eg lamination) and texture (grain and crystal size and shape). Cuboidal grains are usually produced from a rock in which three main joint sets have similar frequency. Irregular grains are more frequent in finer fractions than in coarser ones. This apparently reflects stronger textural control of cracking of the rock when crushed. On the other hand, coarser grains are a result of cracking along joints. Furthermore, it has been proved that dihedral angles of aggregate particles and, therefore their shapes, depend on the shape of basic fracture cell created by the joint system in the rock.

In the literature, they were usually described as quartzites or quartzose sandstones, but in fact they represent quartz arenites or subarkose arenites. Their composition indicates that the source of clastic material was of a cratonic interior type or related to a recycled orogenic material rich in quartz. It is possible that the source was located in elevated parts of the Tatricum or Hronicum domains. Opis:
A new finding of lustrous coal particles from the youngest flysch sediments of the Silesian Nappe, Polish Eastern Carpathians, outcropped in the Bieszczady Mountains is here presented. The coal material occurs in a 1-m thick submarine slump layer in the Kiczera Dydiowska Sandstones, which belong to the youngest part of the Krosno Beds. Coal particles are numerous (up to 16%) in a massive sandstone of the slump layer. The siliciclastic particles from these sediments are classified as material from weathered rocks of continental block or they have been recycled from post-orogenic sediments. Lustrous coal represents coaly plant fragments, which are mostly homogeneous, belonging to macerals of vitrinite group. Some coal pebbles display tree structure, typical of gelified xylites, due to impregnation of cell walls by resinite, which occurrence in this material indicates terrestrial plants producing waxes and resins. Some of gelified plant debris shows evidence of pyritization, what in the absence of inertinite macerals in coal may indicate dysoxic conditions during first decomposition processes of organic matter under water environment. Coaly-bearing slump moved down most probably from SW during Oligocene–Miocene transition time. This shows that an intrabasinal massif, as the uplifted fragment of ?Precambrian craton, which supplied large amount of siliciclastic material to the Silesian–Subsilesian basin during the lower–middle Oligocene, still existed at the end of the Oligocene.

Opis:
The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the shape of the Levantine wine jars discovered at Sha‘ar-Ha Amakim and the petrography of their respective fabrics. The majority of sampled ceramic material originates in well-defined chronological phases of the settlement at the site, spanning the Persian through to the Middle Roman periods. The obtained results clearly demonstrate a connection between the historical period and the raw materials used in jar production. Specifically, the jars of the Phoenician type used in the Persian and Hellenistic periods were made from a fairly homogeneous raw material, the features of which such as the content of the fragments of the coralline alga Amphiroa confirm the previous results of the investigations of jars whose fabric has been considered as Phoenician. On the other hand the bag-shaped jars, especially those of the Hellenistic period, are characterized by the more diversified petrography of their fabrics, suggesting that they were produced by a number of local workshops to supply the needs of local wineries. Finally, the Roman period brings an abrupt change in the production of wine containers, with the introduction of the common use of the fine ferruginous soil rich in quartz silt.

(westfal B). Zostały opróbowane pokłady węgla w wyrobiskach podziemnych kopalń Jan Kanty, Sobieski Jaworzno III , Wesoła i Ziemowit. [...]
Due to dynamic climatic changes resulting, among others, from the use of coal, the content of harmful substances in coal is of particular importance. Dangerous air pollution resulting from the burning of coal (e.g. As, Se, Hg, Pb, Sb) is often associated with sulfide minerals in coal. The study focused on the sulphides occurring in Polish hard coal deposits. Sulfides are one of the forms of occurrence of sulfur in coal. In this paper, an emphasis has been placed on the characteristics of forms of occurrence of sulphides on both macroscopic and microscopic scale and on the chemical analysis in the micro area. The study has been conducted for the No. 301–308 seams from the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, stratigraphically belonging to the highest part of the Orzesze Beds s.s. (Westphalian B). The coal samples have been collected from the coal seams in the underground excavations of the following coal mines: Jan Kanty, Sobieski Jaworzno III , Wesoła and Ziemowit hard coal mine. [...]

Rocks deposited in the Oligocene Paratethys are recognized as one of the most important source rocks in the Flysch Carpathians. The Šitbořice Member (uppermost NP23 to lowermost NP25 zone) represents the upper part of the Menilite Formation in the Outer Flysch Carpathians of the Czech Republic. This paper presents results of bulk geochemical analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and organic petrography. The geochemical evaluation, source rock potential, kerogen type and thermal maturity were studied using borehole cores. Based on the classification of Peters (1986), the evaluated Šitbořice Member is mostly classified as a “very good” source rock according to TOC and variable, mostly “poor” to “good” according to the petroleum potential. However, the average petroleum potential value assigned the member to “good” source rock which is in accordance with the TOC classification if the “live” TOC is used. A comparable distribution between kerogen type II and III has been indicated by HI. Unlike this, the organic petrography observations show the organic matter belongs to the kerogen type II which corresponds to the relationship of residual hydrocarbon potential versus TOC and HI calculated based on “live” organic carbon. Presumed immaturity was confirmed by Rr and Rock-Eval Tmax. Oxygen-restricted conditions ora dysoxic environment have been indicated by the TOC/TS ratio.

Opis:
We describe the organic petrography, palynology and Rock-Eval pyrolysis values of lacustrine black shales termed the Anthracosia Shales (Upper Carboniferous/Lower Permian) in the Intrasudetic Basin (Sudetes, SW Poland). Samples were taken from cores of two boreholes: Rybnica Leśna PIG 1 and Ścinawka Średnia PIG 1. Maceral composition, miospore assemblage composition, palynofacies and geochemical characteristics of dispersed organic matter in the Anthracosia Shales were used to determine conditions of the environment and to evaluate their petroleum potential. Data from both organic petrography and palynology analyses enabled recognition of three broadly distinct organic associations in these shales: bituminous, humic, and intermediate, while Rock-Eval pyrolysis revealed the presence of bituminous and humic kerogen types I and III. Type I corresponds to the bituminous association, with amorphous organic matter (AOM) dominant in the palynofacies, and type III corresponds to the humic association with phytoclasts prevailing in the palynofacies. The thermal maturity of the organic matter is determined by the values of: (1) vitrinite reflectance VRo = 0.53–0.73%, (2) palynomorph 3–4 colour index, and (3) Tmax = 443–447°C, which indicate oil window maturity. Some of the TOC results (1.6–2.9 wt.%) indicate that the Anthracosia Shales are good and very good petroleum source rocks, though the thickness of this interval is low (4–5 m). Shales with TOC values <0.5 wt.% prevail, and may be classifed as poor source rocks.

Opis:
W bazaltoidach pochodzących z wybranych złóż Dolnego Śląska i reprezentujących różne formy intruzywne, wydzielono pięć odmian teksturalnych: afanitową, afanitowo-porfirową, porfirowo-afanitową, porfirowo-gruzłową oraz gruzłowo-porfirową. Zostały one scharakteryzowane w zakresie petrografii (tab. 1) oraz podstawowych właściwości fizyczno-mechanicznych (tab. 2). Możliwość określenia w złożu obszarów występowania bazaltoidów reprezentujących poszczególne odmiany teksturalne, stwarza warunki do typowania stref, z których można uzyskać surowiec o przewidywanej jakości.
Proper values of physical and mechanical properties and their homogeneity are one of major requirements deciding about technological suitability of the rocks quarried to manufacturing aggregates. These properties depend on the natural features of a rock, its mineral composition, texture and structure. The characteristic of aggregates and the technical requirements they must meet are normalized in adequate standards that describe the procedures of conducting particular determinations and the methods of interpreting their results. In the basaltoids (usually called basalts) of selected deposits of Lower Silesia that represent different intrusive forms, five textural varieties have been distinguished: aphanitic, aphanitic-porphyritic, porphyritic-aphanitic, porphyritic-nodular and nodular-porphyritic. The petrography and essential physical and mechanical properties of these varieties have been described in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The highest technical parameters have the aphanitic and aphanitic-porphyritic rock varieties. They result mainly from the textures of these rocks and their insignificant weathering, and to a lesser degree from their mineral composition. The resistance to wear (micro-Deval) and the resistance to fragmentation (Los Angeles) of the aggregates that represent the grain fraction 10-14 mm of the five varieties of basaltoids and the rock composites were determined according to the standards PN-EN 12620: 2008 and PN-EN 13043: 2004. Of the aggregates produced from the five major varieties, only those made of the nodular-porphyritic basaltoids have the properties of lower categories, whereas the remaining four are the materials of very high quality. Additionally, it has been shown that by combining various basaltoid types it is possible to produce composite aggregates with the variable qualities belonging to the categories LA and MDE (Tab. 3). The effect of rock petrography on the differentiation of the parameters of aggregates depending on the grain fraction of the products (Fig. 1, Tab. 4) is the lowest in the case of the aggregates produced from the homogenous and not weathered rock. In contrast, the range of variability of the parameters is higher if the starting material to produce aggregates is composed of several textural varieties and shows signs of weathering as well. The possibility of delineation of the areas occupied in the deposit by basaltoids with specific textural varieties creates the conditions of determining the rock zones, from which the aggregates of the predicted quality may be produced. This quality may be controlled and partly changed to the user needs by producing aggregates from the specially prepared rock mixtures (i.e. the charge to crushers) with specified proportions of the basaltoid varieties.

Opis:
The characterization of organic matter (OM) in sedimentary rocks is important in many types of biological, geological and environmental research. The integrated use of microscopy and geochemistry, as here, is particularly useful in any attempt to define the origin and evolution of OM in sedimentary basins. The organic petrography and geochemistry different types of allogenic and authigenic OM from the Polish Outer Carpathian (POC) rocks were studied in present study to compare their genetic type, thermal maturity, depositional environment and post-sedimentation processes. Special attention was paid to redeposited coal clasts occurrences. The used techniques show differences in organic matter type originating from various sources. The organic petrography analysis shows that redeposited coal clasts (CC) and terrigenous organic matter (TOM) are composed predominantly of woody material (the gas-prone Type-III kerogen). Similar results were obtained during the Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Moreover, the GC-MS analysis of extracts indicated the additional source of OM, namely planktonic organic matter (POM) with oil-prone kerogen Type-I or II. This OM is in some cases high thermally mature and could potentially has allochthonous origin. The n-alkane, saturated and aromatic biomarker data revealed deposition of this POM in anoxic deltaic or close-shore sedimentary environments whereas the redeposited coal clasts were probably originally deposited in coal swamps as were the Upper Silesian bituminous coals.

Opis:
The Ordovician and Silurian deposits in the Baltic Basin are represented by siltstones, mudstones, limestones, marls, sandstones and, most commonly, claystones with a markedly shaley structure. Claystones that are particularly rich in organic matter are considered as potential reservoirs for shale gas accumulations. Samples from 11 boreholes, including core samples of the Piaśnica, Słuchowo, Kopalino, Sasino, Prabuty, Jantar, Pelplin and locally Pasłęk, Kociewie and Puck formations, were analysed by optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD). The Piaśnica, Sasino, Jantar, Pasłęk and Pelplin formations are characterized locally by a dominance of black bituminous claystones with a high content of organic matter, and a generally consistent clay mineral composition. Individual samples only show variations in silt fraction and carbonate content. Very important is the negligible proportion of swelling minerals in the clay fraction; the percentage of smectite in the mixed-layered illite/smectite minerals does not exceed 15%. It is important for the rocks to have adequate [SiO2 >10%; Quartz (Q) + Feldspars (Fs) + Carbonates >40%] brittleness. The content of quartz, feldspars and carbonates (here >40%) suggests that the claystones are susceptible to hydraulic fracturing. The claystones show micropores between detrital grains, between the flakes of clay minerals, within pyrite framboids, and organic matter and secondary micropores within grains.

The sixteenth-century geometrical polychromies that were discovered during conservation works in a medieval church in Włościejewki provided an extraordinary opportunity to examine the original structure of old painting layers and compare them with newer ones. Scientific research was carried out to obtain and confirm the stratigraphy of the paintings and enhance the knowledge about the techniques and pigments that had been used there. This paper presents a mineralogical and petrographic characteristic of the materials. The analysis was performed in painting layers such as: plaster, whitewash and pigment. They originated from layers created between the sixteenth and nineteenth century. Four microscopic observations of thin sections were made, using reflected and transmitted light. Samples that turned out to be too fragile were examined using a scanning microscope equipped with an EDS detector. The research also described in detail the plaster and the whitewash. Monochromes of the background, details of walls and ceilings were made on lime whitewash using the dry fresco technique. The study illustratively demonstrates the structural and textural variability of the painting layers through the ages. The study’s findings show a slight variability of the pigments, mainly iron oxides based pigments.
Szesnastowieczne polichromie geometryczne, które odkryto podczas prac konserwatorskich w średniowiecznym kościele we Włościejewkach, dostarczyły nadzwyczajnej możliwości zbadania oryginalnej struktury starych warstw malarskich i porównania ich z nowszymi warstwami. Przeprowadzono badania naukowe, aby otrzymać i potwierdzić stratygrafię malowideł i pogłębić wiedzę na temat użytych technik i pigmentów. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje mineralogiczną i petrograficzną charakterystykę zastosowanych materiałów. Badanie ilustratywnie przedstawia strukturalne i teksturalne zróżnicowanie warstw malarskich w różnych wiekach. Wyniki pokazują nieznaczne zróżnicowanie w pigmentach, głównie opartych na tlenkach żelaza.

Petrographical content of Pleistocene gravels (4–10 mm) derived from till and glaciofluvial deposits of Western Pomerania was studied. The coarse-grained gravels (20–60 mm) have been additionally investigated for indicator erratics. There are three dominant petrographical groups within the gravels regardless of genetic type of sediments: crystalline rocks, Lower Paleozoic limestones and sandstones. Indicator erratics indicate the most effective glacial erosion in south-eastern Sweden. Theoretical stone center is located at 57.7°N and 16°E, that is in Smĺland. Other regions where the ice sheet could have been nourished were located in Dalarna and Ĺland Islands. The most numerous erratics found in the glacial sediments are: Smĺland granites and quartz porphyries, Ĺland rapakivi granites and quartz porphyries, Bredvad porphyries, Venjan and Grönklitt porphyrites.
