    I  conducted  my  own  ethnographic  field  research  in  1998,  2004  and  2007.  Further  field research,  from  2010  to  2012,  under  the  title  ‘Folk  Piety  and  the  Transmission  of Ethnoheritage in  Upper  Meñimurje’, was  part of  Tomo  Vinšćak’s academic  project  Sacral Interpretation  of  Landscape,  organized  by  the  Matapur  Association  and  the  Ethnological and Anthropological Department of the Faculty of Philosophy in  Zagreb. The analysis and comparison  of  the  collected materials  has  contributed  to  research  into  the  fascinating and  still vibrant  –  though  under-researched  –  survival  strategies  of  pre-Christian  and Christian worldviews in the western and north-western parts of the northernmost districts of Croatia.

    Autorka niniejszego artykułu podejmuje rozważania na temat słowiańskiego boga – Peruna – w wybranych wierszach Siergieja Gorodieckiego i Konstantina Balmonta. Uwaga badawcza skupiona jest na założeniu, że rosyjscy moderniści wykorzystywali symboliczny język mitu i postaci z panteonu słowiańskiego do przedstawienia aktualnych problemów świata codziennego, przy czym motywy i wątki mitologiczne poddawane są poetyckiej transformacji. Zbadano także na czym polega zmiana semantyki postaci Peruna i w czym zawiera się jej istota. Podstawę metodologiczną stanowią założenia hermeneutyki filozoficznej, która w centrum uwagi stawia problem rozumienia tekstu i proponuje jego kontekstualną interpretację. We wszystkich analizowanych wierszach dostrzegalna jest realizowana na różne sposoby próba zrozumienia praobrazu pogańskiego świata słowiań-skiego, źródeł charakteru narodowego, a także próba rekonstrukcji prototypowego obrazu świata Słowian. W wierszach Balmonta Perun zatraca swe pierwotne rysy, stając się niejako kontaminacją różnych bóstw słowiańskich, podczas gdy Gorodiecki wyraźnie rozgranicza te postaci, przedstawiając Peruna jako wyzwoliciela poskramiającego demoniczne moce.
    This article proposes a reflection on the Slavic god – Perun – in selected poems by Sergei Gorodiecki and Konstantin Balmont. Research attention is focused on the assumption that Russian modernists used the symbolic language of the myth and characters from the Slavic pantheon to present the current problems of the everyday world, while mythological motifs and threads are subject to poetic transformation. We also investigate the nature of change in semantics of the Perun character and what its essence is contained in. The analysis is based on philosophical hermeneutics, which focus on the problem of understanding the text and proposes its contextual interpretation. In all of the analysed poems, we can see an attempt to understand the image of the pagan Slavic world, sources of national character, as well as an attempt to reconstruct the prototype image of the world of Slavs in various ways. In Balmont’s poems, Perun loses his original features, becoming somehow contamination of various Slavic deities, while Gorodiecki clearly demarcates these characters, depicting Perun as a liberator taming demonic powers.

    The question of the connection between solar and thunderstorm activity is not new. The discussion among scientists began before the cosmic era. The correlations of the ground-based registration of the cosmic ray flux and meteorological observations have been performed since the 50s of the 20th century. The discussed problem is related to the influence of cosmic rays on the creation of clouds, particularly thunderstorm clouds. The intensity of the galactic cosmic ray flux is controlled by the density and velocity of the solar wind. The increase in the solar wind flux during high solar activity leads to decreasing galactic cosmic ray flux, but on the other hand, the solar activity creates solar cosmic rays. Using data from the PERUN system and the DEMETER satellite, we tried to estimate the connection between the thunderstorm activity in Poland and solar activity during the period of the DEMETER operational activity (2004-2010). The influence of thunderstorms on the ionosphere and its dependence on solar activity is also discussed. However, due to the short time interval of the available data covering an insignificant part of the solar cycle, close to the minimum activity, our findings are not fully conclusive. No correlation was found between the cosmic ray flux and lightning activity given by the number of the discharges. However, some of the most energetic lightning discharges in the analyzed period occurred close to the minimum of the solar activity and their appearance is discussed.

    The article is an attempt to demonstrate that the theonym Perun/Piorun was used (and in some instances is still used) in the Polish language. The completed analyses have shown that the name of the Slavic god of thunder functions solely in a scholarly discourse. He appears in it as Piorun, in the 16th century, principally in historical texts. This phonetical form was preserved until the 19th century, changing its denotations. In the texts of 16th-century historians, the theonym Piorun denoted a Slavic god (including the god from the pantheon of prince Vladimir the Great), as well as Lithuanian Perkunas. In later studies, it begins to denote only the supreme Slavic god. This interpretation has been presented, for example, by S. B. Linde. The data from Orgelbrand’s encyclopaedia show that at the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, lexically, there was a clear differentiation between Polish Piorun, Rus Perun and the Lithuanian god named Perkunas. Most likely, it was in the scholarly literature of the 20th century that the theonym Piorun was replaced by Perun, which denotes the god of thunder of all Slavs as well as the god from the pantheon of Vladimir. In the colloquial Polish language the theonym Perun is evidenced only indirectly: 1. in the name of thunder (Pol. piorun), 2. in the names of elongated stones found after a storm – belemnites or fulgurites (piorunowy kamień [thunderstone], piorunowa strzała [thunder arrow], piorunek [small thunder]), 3. in the folklore name ziele piorunowe [thunder herb] ‘garden asparagus'.
