    Opis:
    The article discusses the most important premises which deal with Christian penance from the VI to the XI century. The main sources for the above article are the Penitential Books (Libri Poenitentiales), published as part of the series of Źródła Myśli Teologicznej (ŻMT 58), collected and edited by A. Baron and H. Pietras in 2011. The article consists of three parts. The first part examines the meaning of penance in the life of Christians as a medicine for sin which is an illness of the soul and the body. The second part presents the teaching of penitentials on the twelve ways of absolving from sins. The third part provides practical suggestions for confessors and penitents. The Penitential Books, as a witness to the development of penitential practices, confirm the role of individual spiritual therapy in the life of the Christian. This process of regaining of one’s spiritual health takes place, on one hand, through the grace of God’s Mercy, and, on the other hand, through penitential practices whose aim was internal conversion and outward change in one’s way of life.

    Artykuł ukazuje cel i naturę pokuty w najstarszych irlandzkich księgach pokutnych pochodzących z przełomu V i VI wieku. Na Wyspach Brytyjskich narodziła się nowa forma pokuty nazwanej potem „pokutą taryfikowaną”. W odróżnieniu od pokuty praktykowanej na kontynencie europejskim była ona powtarzalna. Penitencjały zawierające listę grzechów i praktyki pokutne, które trzeba było podjąć, by uzyskać rozgrzeszenie, ukazują również cel i naturę pokuty. Jej istotą było zerwanie z grzechem i nawrócenie serca. Początkiem nawrócenia było uznanie popełnionego grzechu, pokorne przyjęcie i wypełnienie pokuty. Nawrócenie przywracało jedność z Bogiem i wspólnotą kościelną. Wielkość pokuty za popełnione grzechy zależała od stanu, niekiedy majątku, osoby popełniającej grzech. Najsurowsze pokuty, w celu uzyskania przebaczenia grzechu, musieli odbywać duchowni, gdyż uważano ich za osoby będące najbliżej Boga i w związku z tym to oni powinni dawać autentyczne świadectwo wiary i miłości. Starożytne irlandzkie księgi pokutne nie znały grzechów nieodpuszczalnych. Jedynie odmowa przez człowieka podjęcia pokuty sprawiała, że nie mógł on uzyskać przebaczenia grzechów.
    This article presents the purpose and nature of repentance in Ireland’s oldest books of penance, dating from the fifth and sixth centuries. In the British Isles, a new form of penance was born, later known as “tariffed penance”. Contrary to the penance practiced on the European continent, it was repetitive. The penitents, who listed the sins and penitential practices that had to be practiced in order to obtain absolution, also show the purpose and nature of repentance. The essence of repentance was to break away from sin and convert the heart. The beginning of conversion was recognition of the committed sin and humble acceptance and fulfillment of penance. A conversion restored unity with God and the Church community. The scale of penance for the committed sins depended on the condition, sometimes property, of the person who committed the sin. The most severe penances, in order to obtain forgiveness of sin, had to be performed by the clergy, because they were considered to be persons closest to God and therefore they were supposed to give an authentic witness of faith and love. The ancient Irish books of penance knew no unforgivable sins. Only man’s refusal to accept penance made him unable to obtain forgiveness of his sins.

    The Church’s penitential practice has been changing over the centuries and it assumed various forms. One of the interesting issues in this field is showing the attitudes assumed by the clergy and the faithful towards the Eucharist, and presenting the misuses that they could commit. The misuses concerned both the conditions one had to meet in order to properly celebrate the Holy Mass, the very celebration, and storing the Eucharist. In most penitentials it was stressed that the Holy Mass should be celebrated in one’s own community, and outside it – only with the bishop’s permission. It was also emphasized that a priest was allowed to celebrate a definite number of masses on a given day and on one altar (about five). It was impermissible for a priest to offer a Holy Mass for suicides or for persons who were sentenced to death. Priests had to take care of the proper form of celebration. According to penitential books it was a sin if a priest lost the corporal, if he celebrated the Mass while being intoxicated, or if he said the texts of the Mass —especially the Mass canon—carelessly. Medieval penitential books allow learning about the care with which the Eucharist was treated, and what misuses could be committed by the Christians of those times. Numerous canons presenting irregularities and the penances corresponding to them allow showing the timeless value and beauty of the Eucharist as the source and the peak in the life of the Church.

    Zachowania magiczne były od niepamiętnych czasów elementem kultury. Świadectwa w postaci amuletów, różnych narzędzi czy zaklęć systematycznie są odkrywane. Magia przenikając w świat religii, stawała się jej elementem, z czasem aż do tego stopnia, że w zależności od okresu historycznego, nie sposób odróżnić jednej od drugiej. W niniejszym artykule zostały poddanie analizie, z perspektywy ustawodawstwa kościelnego, praktyki magiczne szkodzące zdrowiu i życiu. Oczywiście przepisy prawne mają na celu eliminację błędów i zagrożeń przez co przedstawiają obraz jednostronny nie oddający wszystkich aspektów życia. Niewątpliwie jednak odnoszą się do zagrożeń realnych i przez to poszerzają wiedzę o epoce. W przedstawionym tekście wzięto pod uwagę takie praktyki magiczne, które celowo i umyślnie miały szkodzić konkretnym osobom.

    At the beginning of the history of the Church, the attitude of Christians to military service and war was varied. In later years, with the development of Christian doctrine and church discipline, these issues were regulated in detail by the provisions of individual councils and synods. The topic of Christian soldier also appears in penitentiary literature. Penitential books (libri poenitentiales), the subject matter of which actually covers the whole of human life in the context of the possibility of committing a crime - sin and its forgiveness by performing appropriate penance - also refer to the issues of Christian service in the army and participation in war. After analyzing the source text, the author would like to present primarily two issues in the article: the service of Christians in the army (royal or barbarian) and the problem of their participation in the war and the consequences for crimes committed during it. To present the subject, the author will use the canons of selected penitential books, in which interesting, from the point of view of the topic, issues appear.

    Księgi pokutne, które zrodziły się w Irlandii, a w krótkim czasie przyjęły się w całej Europie, wchodzą wraz z sakramentarzami w zbiory tzw. prawa specjalnego i są jednym z pośrednich źródeł poznania prawa kanonicznego, zwłaszcza prawa karnego. Ich podstawowym celem było okazanie pomocy spowiednikom w zakresie ujednolicenia nakładania pokuty, ale także sposobu sprawowania sakramentu pokuty i pojednania.Analizowana księga pokutna z Paryża została opracowana, jak się przyjmuje, około 750 roku, na bazie najstarszego penitencjału pochodzącego z Francji, tj. księgi pokutnej z Burgundii (ok.700–725). Artykuł ukazuje, że spowiednicy mieli w sposób bardzo odpowiedzialny i dokładny rozeznać postępowanie penitenta, którym był biskup, prezbiter lub diakon, aby nie byli oni powodem zgorszenia wśród wiernych, którzy zostali powierzeni ich trosce i opiece. Wśród niewłaściwych postaw duchownych księga pokutna z Paryża mówi zwłaszcza o kwestiach związanych z pozbawieniem życia, brakiem troski o Najświętszy Sakrament, udziałem w polowaniach, nadużywaniem alkoholu, czy też nadużyciach w sferze seksualnej.
    Penitential books which were written in Ireland but were shortly adopted by the whole of Europe are, along sacramentaries, a part of special laws and a means of getting to know the canon law, particularly the criminal law. Their aim was to help confessors unify the way in which penance was administered, as well as how the sacrament of penance and reconciliation was celebrated.The penitential book of Paris which is analyzed in this article, is assumed to have been created around 750 AD and was written on the basis of the oldest penitential book from France i.e. the penitential book of Burgundy (circa 700–725 AD).The article shows that confessors were to analyze the behavior of the penitent – in this case a bishop, priest or deacon – very carefully and responsibly, in order to ensure that they were not a reason of scandals among the faithful of whom they were to take care. Among inappropriate behaviors of the clergymen, the penitential book of Paris speaks in particular about matters related to the protection of the human life, the care of the Holy Sacrament, participation in hunting, overconsumption of alcohol or sexual abuse.
