    Pateryk Kijowsko-Pieczerski jest zabytkiem piśmiennictwa Rusi Kijowskiej. To zbiór hagiograficznych opowiadań, dotyczących świętych starców monasteru Kijowsko-Pieczerskiego, który został założony w XI w. Przewodnim tematem Pateryka jest nieustanna duchowa walka ascetów o osiąganie i trwanie w świętości życia, rozumianego jako wspólnota (gr. koinonia) z Bogiem. Artykuł jest gruntowną analizą demonologii Pateryka Kijowsko-Pieczerskiego. Przedstawione w nim zostały różnego rodzaju sposoby walki mnichów pieczerskich z demonicznymi pokusami i atakami złych duchów. Wskazane zostały również istotne elementy metody hezychastycznej, z których korzystali święci starcy Rusi Kijowskiej w życiu duchowym.

    Opis:
    Comparative studies of medical specialization in Orthodox and Catholic monasteries. Preliminary remarks. The article is dedicated to the problem of the genesis of hospitals and specialization of some Catholic and Orthodox monasteries in the provision of medical care and other charitable activities. The relevance of the topic is dictated by the difficulty in explaining the phenomenon of the Orthodox Trinity Hospital Monastery in Kyiv outside the context of the history of Rus as a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Orthodox monasteries are not characterized by the reflection in their name of the monastery’s implied charitable function. The problems of historiography relating to the monastery as a medical institution are discussed in the article. It focuses how the imperial concept of historical development prevails in post-Soviet countries, also either West European connections or regional features is taken little into account. Despite the meager available source base, posing the question makes it possible to identify promising areas of research, such as a comparison of the charters of Orthodox and Catholic monasteries with regard to the care of patients, dependence of specialized church institutions on public health policy, dynamics of the evolution of hospitals in Catholic and Orthodox monasteries, an architectural and spatial structure of medical units there, monastic view of disease and medical practice, which highlight the issues of the monasteries’ social role and their functioning during epidemics.

    Panegyric works and their connection with the Kyiv monasteries in the context of the relations between the Hetmanate and the Moscow kingdom in the early 18th century. The eulogies which are dedicated to Prince Alexander Menshikov and originate from the Kyiv monastery environment – in particular, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the Kyiv Brotherhood Monastery are discussed and compared in the article. The circumstances of the origin of these works, the peculiarities and motivation of the dedications, rhetorical figures and their significance in the respective historical and political context have also been analysed. Panegyrics were inscribed in the paradigm of Ukrainian-Russian relations in the early 18th century. A little-known work attributed to Theophanes Prokopovych is also published in the appendices.

    Artykuł został poświęcony okolicznościom powstania kultu św. Teodozego, ihumena klasztoru kijowsko-peczerskego. W tekście dokonano analizy zachowanych tekstów źródłowych (Powieści minionych lat, Pateryku kijowsko-peczerskiego) dotyczących okoliczności translacji szczątków Teodozego do klasztornej cerkwi Zaśniecia Bogurodzicy, która w przekonaniu wielu badaczy stała się zaczynem kultu wspomnianego świętego. Rozpatrzenie wspomnianego zagadnienia pozwoliło na postawienie tezy, że wydarzenia z 1091 r. mogły wynikać z prozaicznych powodów – prawa ihumena do pochówku w cerkwi klasztornej, jak również faktu, że był on jednym z inicjatorów budowy wspomnianej świątyni. Obserwacje tekstologiczne pozwoliły również podać w wątpliwość prezentowaną w Powieści minionych lat chronologię zdarzeń związanych z kształtowaniem się kultu św. Teodozego, dla której osnową był, jak można przypuszczać, Żywot św. Teodora Studyty. Początek kultu św. Teodozego wiązał się z przemianami kulturowymi, których pierwsze symptomy widać na Rusi w pierwszym dziesięcioleciu XII w. Wówczas to metropolita kijowski Nikifor I, na polecenie księcia Świętopełka i prośby ówczesnego ihumena klasztoru peczerskiego Teoktysta, wpisał imię Teodozego do Syondyku, oficjalnie zaliczając go do grona świętych Kościoła Rusi Kijowskiej.
    The article depicts the circumstances of the origin of the cult of St. Theodosius, ihumen of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. The text analyzes the preserved sources (The Tale of Bygone Years, The Kie- Pechersk Patericon) concerning the events of the translation of Theodosius' remains to the monastery church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, which, in the opinion of many researchers, gave rise to the cult of the saint. The examination of this issue allows for a thesis that the events of 1091 could have resulted from prosaic reasons – the right of ihumen to be buried in the monastery church as well as the fact that he was one of the initiators of the construction of the temple. The textological observations also make it possible to question the chronology of events related to the formation of the cult of Theodosius, as presented in the Tale of Bygone Years, which was based on the Life of St. Theodore the Studite, as can be assumed. The beginning of the cult of St. Theodosius was associated with cultural changes, whose first symptoms can be observed in Ruthenia in the first decade of the 12th century. At that time, the Metropolitan of Kiev, Nikifor I, entered the name of Theodosius in Sinodik, officially including him among the saints of the Church of Kievan Rus.

    The relevance of the proposed work lies in the fact that the powerful collection of building materials has been assembled in the scientific funds of the National Preserve „Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” over a 100-year history of archaeological research into architectural monuments from the 11th-15thcenturies (the Dormition Cathedral, chapel of St. John the Baptist, Trinity Gatech church, a brick refectory, and a stonewall from the 12thcentury). It consists of bricks (plinthois), ceramic tiles and stone floor slabs, roof tiles, glass hutters, frescoes, mosaics, samples of stones and solutions, marble decorative elements, etc. Among the most massive and informative materials is a plinthoi. The study of its characteristics and historical and cultural significance is aimed at acquiring a body of knowledge about building materials. M. Kholostenko, G. Ivakin, O. Syromyatnikov, and D. Jolshin were engaged in the study of bricks from the Pechersk monastery. However, no generalizing work on construction materials of the 11th-15th centuries of these monuments of ancient Kyiv has been carried out till now.
