Opis:
In his earliest letter, 1 Thessalonians, Paul addresses the issue of eschatology, leaving us a surprising anthropological description of the human being as “spirit, soul, and body.” Paul uses terms that are familiar to his readers. However, the first term in this threefold division of a human being, “spirit,” is the most emphasised, since the human being is no longer made up exclusively of “body and soul.” In this brief contribution, I will attempt to examine this term, “spirit,” as illuminated by its immediate narrative context and by other Pauline pneumatological texts and by its first reception. In this way, the reader will better understand the Pauline vision of the human being in the eschatology, in his ultimate destiny.

God had congratulated himself for creating the universe and humankind (Gen 1,31), a “very good” creation brought to nought by human sin. However, human nature still sighs and longs for the goodness and image of God within. God’s creation yearns to be created anew. Paul’s understanding of “new creation” and “new man” looks to the wise plan of God negated by sin. For Paul, the new era, in which the new creation reaches its aim in perfection, is the time of the parousia, the new and future coming of Jesus Christ. The Apostle of the Gentiles understood “kainē ktisis” in a soterio-cosmological sense, as the event consequent upon the redemption brought about by Christ Jesus that will be fulfilled in the parousia. New creation, new mankind in a new covenant takes place in communion with the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus in Baptism. The fundamental condition by which the revelation of the mystery of God takes place is the new covenant fulfilled in the blood of Christ and its effects: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, upon those who believe, as even the prophets had foretold. One can observe the development of the Pauline thought in his Letters: from a theological perspective and its legitimacy in the Major Letters, to the practical consequences in the daily life of the Christian assemblies in the Deutero-Pauline Letters, that emerge from the application of these theological arguments.

Opis:
The reader of the Pauline Epistles encounters the metaphor of the “inner man” for the first time in 2 Cor 4:16. Inconspicuous at first glance, this metaphor reveals not only a wide reception history within Christian thought and tradition but also a conceptual depth which brings us close to the origins of our thought on human personality and subjectivity. In this article, I want thus to elaborate on the concept of the “inner man” in Paul. Tracing its origins in Plato, I want to show how this metaphor must be understood on a conceptual level using metaphors as archaeological tools that help to discover concepts that might get lost when only interpreted as linguistic ornaments. Claiming that Plato explicitly expresses the human »self« as a continuous agent in front of changing phenomena of the human soul with his concept of the “inner man,” I will then turn to Paul. Even though it is impossible to trace the exact origins of this metaphor in the writings of the Apostle, it is my thesis that it can be found in 2 Cor 4:16 in substance. Paul thus uses the metaphor of the “inner man” to express the newly redeemed and yet justified Christian »self« that is confronted with opposition and contradiction that waste away the outer man. The exact Greek wording of this metaphor allows to identify the pictorial level of this metaphor in Paul with the temple in Jerusalem. As I will show, Paul thus integrates two anthropological lines that he derives from the creational accounts in the “inner man,” showing interesting parallels to Philo of Alexandria. With the metaphor of the “inner man,” the reader of 2 Cor 4:16 therefore encounters a or even the fundamental concept of Pauline Anthropology.

Opis:
The keeping of the scriptorium and chancery by the first Polish Paulines dates back to the first half of the 15th century. It was mainly focused on copying liturgical and related books used for pastoral purposes, legal documentation and history, which included among others the history of the image of Our Lady (Translacio tabule) and the Chronicle of Wincenty Kadłubek. In the 16th century the scriptorium of Jasna Góra undertook the documentation of religious life in the sanctuary, including the first reports of pilgrims and records of confreres, as a response to the attacks of the Reformation. At the same time the scriptorium created the first cartularies and other books containing legal processes, inventories, as well as library and account records. The development process of the chancery has reached its peak in the early 17th century, when Fr. Mikołaj Staszewski (1595-1658), a former employee of the Curia of Poznań, later Provincial and General of the Pauline Order, entered the Board of the Order and introduced a new style of copying files. He also initiated the process of writing Pauline chronicles – first of the Polish Province and then of the whole Order, and introduced relevant secretarial standards to the religious constitution, of which he was the main inspirer and contractor. Currently the Polish Pauline Archives store 71 medieval manuscripts from Polish scriptoria, and more than 40 cartulary books from the modern era, among which only one Formulare obedientiarum salutationum et epistolarum variarum of Dionizy Klękowski (1599-1675) contains 1053 copies of various documents and correspondence from the period 1367-1673.

Opis:
According to the assumption underlying the project, from the ontological point of view a soundscape related to a particular real space does not function as an entity shared by all potential listeners, but comes into being in the act of subjective peception which is dependent on the listener’s identity. The sonic topography of a city is an individual matter as each listener creates his own mental maps. The focal point of the project is the concept of deep listening which consists in intensified listening to everything that might be heard. By doing this, the listener introduces himself into the alert state of consciousness which enables him to detect the components of a soundscape. The project consists of three complementary parts. The first one is a poster which introduces the concept of deep listening, the other one comprises of an audiovisual installation. Two short films on the practice of listening will be presented here. They are devoted to John Cage and Pauline Oliveros, the composers particularly interested in sounds and listening. The final (practical) part od the project consists of a record of a city soundscape. It offers the chance to put the purely theoretical tenets into practice. It creates an opportunity to open one’s mind to the unplanned experience of the polyphony of a city and become sensitive to the acoustic potential of space. Cage claimed that what music is can only be determined by listening. Gernot Böhme appears to go even further when he asserts that the actual subject of music is listening itself. Practising deep listening is then an act of getting out of the habit of Weghören, resulting from the state of noise pollution typical of a postindustrial city. Finally, the project might induce to consider the question of space creation by means of sounds as well as the necessity of redefining the concept of the city itself. It is no longer the space where sounds are produced and stored, but rather the space which comes to existence in the individual act of listening to it and the space which is pure audibility.

In Leśna Podlaska, the image of Mother of God has been an object of worship since 1683. In 1727, the Leśna parish was taken over by monks from the Pauline Order. In 1875, on the basis of Tsar Alexander II's decree, the church in Leśna Podlaska, together with the venerated image, the great altar, and votive offerings, were handed over to the Eastern Orthodox Church. The remaining furnishings were transferred to 18 parish churches of the liquidated dioceses of Podlasie and Lublin. The organ was transferred to All Saints Church in Warsaw. The book collection of the Pauline monks from Leśna was donated to the library of the seminary in Lublin. In the years 1879–1881, the exterior of the church was changed, giving the building an appearance characteristic of Orthodox Church temples. Leśna Podlaska became an important centre of Russification policy carried out by Russia.

The article is devoted to Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz's activities for the church in Lesna Podlaska. Seven projects created by the author were treated in a special way. They date back to 1st of September 1926, 8th of February 1935, 21st of October 1935, 18th of April 1936, 8th of May 1936, 15th of June 1936 and the date of one of them is not specified. As there is no much study devoted to this subject, and only a little information is scattered on various texts, the author decided to make research in this field. We can divide the projects in two groups. The first one is about the projects with completely different formal and stylistic features. The second is about the projects, in which the structure was stated, but only the details of the tower’s outlook and their baroque helmets were changed. The project itself presents an interesting collection of the tower variants, in particular those which are connected with the concave-convex facade. The historical context, in which the project arose, was also discussed. The history of church and its evolution connected with the annexation, which innovated and changed the church, was also discussed in detail. The source materials from various Polish archives were prominent for the existence of the article. In the article an analysis was also made of the tower gable, which is a part of Lesnianski church. The aspect of cooperation of Paulins, which took place not only in Lesna Podlaska, was underlined. It can be noticed that the architect connected various parts of objects in an individual and innovative way, not necessary multiplying well known forms.

There exist only few medieval codices containing musical notation for the Mass in the Pauline rite. The significant source for further research of the Pauline liturgical music is Missale Eremitarum S. Pauli printed by Johannes Amerbach about 1490. The objective of this article is to discuss the blank spaces left especially for the addition of handwritten neumes. The space for musical notation was prepared by the printer for parts of the Ordinarium Missae, in ceremonies of the Palm Sunday and Good Friday. In six remaining copies of the missal the neumes were inscribed in various ways. The study of the provenance shows that these copies were used in the monasteries in several countries.

Opis:
The excavations conducted in 2007 and 2008 in the western part of the Pauline Fathers monastery in Kraków-Skałka did not result in the discovery of any medieval church or monastery relics preserved in situ. This is caused first of all by far-going transformations of buildings and their vicinity in the modern period, starting from the 17th century. One of the most interesting results of the research project turned out to be the possibility of making a revised reconstruction of the shape of the limestone rock on which Archangel Michael and St. Stanislaus’ church was built. It allows to reconsider the oldest iconographic record that represents Skałka and its architecture at the close of the Middle Ages. It is also worthwhile emphasizing that the archaeological investigations yielded a very large collection of portable artefacts, a significant part of which are finds of great scientific value. Extremely important is the discovery of a collection of coins, found mainly in bank layers of trench I, being the largest such collection acquired through archaeological excavations in Kraków. The series of coins, including 136 pieces from a broad chronological spectrum (the 14th to the 19th century), contains some unique specimens. A splendid assemblage of several late-Gothic, decorated bronze book fittings and clasps was also discovered. Another extraordinary find is a personal gilded seal matrix. A large series of stove tiles was also acquired, including particularly beautiful early Renaissance tiles. Finally – a particularly interesting series of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque glazed colour roof tiles (of the “gąsiorówka” type) was found. Their presence leaves no doubts that, at the turn of the 15th century at the latest, the roof of St. Michael Archangel and St. Stanislaus’ church attracted popular attention by its original covering in the form of glazed tiles. Concluding, it can be stated that the discovered assemblage of artefacts is a distinct manifestation of the power and significance of the Kraków Pauline Fathers, who cultivated the tradition of St. Stanislaus’ place of martyrdom and who played an active role in the life of Kraków’s citizens and all Poles already since the Middle Ages.

Opis:
From the very beginning of its existence, the Pauline Order paid attention to the need to educate and develop the intellectual life of its members. This resulted from the adoption of St. Augustine’s rule by the community, which in addition to the principles governing the common life also emphasized the intellectual formation of the friars by providing them with access to books. The fulfilment of the obligations resulting from the rule and the subsequent legislation of the convent meant that every Pauline monastery was equipped with a larger or smaller library. It was no different in the case of St. Martin's convent in Oporów, which had existed since 1453 thanks to the foundation of the brothers Piotr and Władysław from the powerful Oporowski family, with the Sulima coat of arms. The monastery library was probably established soon after the foundation of the monastery. It was used primarily by preachers, who prepared Sunday and Christmas sermons, as well as by other monks, if they were authorized to do so. The beginnings of the library are unknown due to the lack of sources from that period. Only the eighteenth-century catalogues of books shed light on the functioning of the library, albeit in a limited period of time 1711-1753. To this day, 13 library inventories have survived, providing welcome information about the intellectual life of the local Pauline monks, titles of books along with the names of the authors and the division of bibliographic material into various thematic categories. The image of the Oporów library is complemented by 47 old prints of Oporów provenience, which are now the property of the University Library in Warsaw. Although their number is insignificant and constitutes only a fraction of the former assets of the library, nevertheless it turns out to be helpful in the analysis of the resources of the Pauline library and the development of intellectual horizons of its users. The analysis of the preserved archival materials is the first attempt to restore the library of the Oporów monastery in the century preceding its irretrievable disappearance in the course of the convent’s annulment.

The purpose of this paper is to present the short history of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit which was following the spiritual lifestyle of the „first hermit”, Saint Paul of T hebes († 342). The paper starts with the description of a foundation of the order in the first half of the 13th century, when hermits started to live in hermitages in the Patach Mountains in the Diocese of Pécs and in the Pilis Mountains in the south-east of Esztergom, and in its major part it focuses on the later development of the Pauline monasteries in the territory of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. The Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit (Ordo Fratrum Eremitarum Sancti Pauli Primi Eremitae) was following the spiritual lifestyle of the „first hermit”, Saint Paul of Thebes († 342). The formation of this order started in the first half of the 13th century, when hermits started to live in hermitages in the Patach Mountains in the Diocese of Pécs and in the Pilis Mountains in the south-east of Esztergom, following the example of the Old-Christian hermits in the deserts of Egypt. Blessed Eusebius of Esztergom († 1270) united the hermits who were scattered in caves and around 1250 they built the Holy Cross Monastery close to what is today Kesztölc-Klastrompuszta. Approvals granted by a legate of the Pope, Cardinal Gentilis of Montefiore, were an important step in the process of the formation of this new Order of Pauline Fathers, allowing them to follow the rule of Saint Augustine and create their own constitution. The centre of this monastic society and the seat of the General Priory was the monastery connected to the St. Lawrence Church in Buda. The contemplative nature of the order was clearly implied by their motto Solus cum Deo solo, and the religious practices of the monks included meditation near the relics of saints, the recitation of numerous prayers for the dead and the intensive worship of Mary. The order thrived in the 14th century: while 22 Pauline monasteries were built during the 40 year reign of Louis the Great (1342–1382), 16 monasteries were founded in 70 years plus that followed (1382–1458). The defeat of Hungarian troops at Mohács (1526) did great damage to the order. However, Turkish ravages were not the only cause of the dissolution of the monasteries at that time. The rapidly-spreading ideas of reformation also drew the attention of important Hungarian noblemen; even though they were the descendants of the founders of the monasteries, they converted to Protestantism and appropriated the possessions of the church in their territories.

The article reviews the book by Andrzej M. Gieniusz, CR, “Inesperto nell'arte di parlare”? (2 Cor 11, 6). Retorica al servizio del Vangelo (Percorsi culturali 25; Roma: Urbaniana University Press 2018). The author begins by discussing the publication in detail, and then proceeds to the specific issues related to it. These include Rom 7:1-6 read as transitio, Rom 8:12 as the test case of orality and literacy in Paul, the category of “religious experience” in Paul, the apocalyptic background of Paul’s attitude toward work, and the role of 1 Cor 15:8 in constructing the apostle’s ethos. The main characteristic of the book by Prof. Gieniusz is a creative combination of rhetoric and theology, discussed in the last part of the article. The book shows how to do theology focused on the newness of the Christian life, the primacy of grace and the uniqueness of Christ’s way (solus Christus).

What is the place of miracles surrounding Paul and wrought by him within the whole of his life and mission?  A survey of Paul’s letters allows us to get a view of how the apostle sees the function of signs, wonders, and mighty works within the dynamics of the proclamation of the gospel. Viewed in this way, the possible difference between information based upon Paul’s own communication and that of his contemporaries about him appears to decrease. A clearer picture of the part miracles play within the whole of Paul’s mission may also help to rethink modern and post-modern worldviews from a biblical perspective.
