    The article discusses the historical and descriptive aspects of the invocations of patron saints in the Lublin churches, in the context of the city’s space and sacral landscape. Because the dominant role in Lublin’s religious life is played by the Catholic Church, the most numerous group are the names relating to Catholicism – but not exclusively: other Christian denominations (including Eastern ones) are also represented. Churches as spatial objects belong to the city’s cultural landscape, its sacral landscape and sacred space. It is a sanctity that emerges thanks to shared meanings, communicated by means of an urban and architectural code, as well as in connection with linguistic forms qua messages concerning a given object and place. Forms of this kind are invocations of patron saints associated with places of religious cult. They have a discursive marking that results from being anchored in religious discourse; however, they can also function as elements that organize the communal life of the discourse of social memory. This article deals with Catholic patron saints. The data have been classified semantically but also with respect to the form of the names and their cultural motivation. Thanks to this, they could be correlated with specific ways of the onymic impersonation of the sacred.

    Opis:
    Waged in 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs has claimed over 20,000 lives according to human rights groups. The Duterte administration’s own count is significantly lower: around 6,000. The huge discrepancy between the government’s official count and that of arguably more impartial organizations about something as concretely material as body count is symptomatic of how disinformation is central to the Duterte administration and how it can sustain the approval of the majority of the Philippine electorate. We suggest that Duterte’s populist politics generates what Boler and Davis (2018) call “affective feedback loops,” which create emotional and informational ecosystems that facilitate smooth algorithmic governance. We turn to Patron Saints of Nothing, a recently published novel by Randy Ribay about a Filipino-American who goes back to the Philippines to uncover the truth behind the death of his cousin. Jay’s journey into the “heart of darkness” as a “hyphenated” individual (Filipino-American) allows him access to locally networked subjectivities but not its affective entanglements. Throughout the novel, he encounters numerous versions of the circumstances of Jun’s demise and the truth remains elusive at the end of the novel. We argue that despite the constant distortion of fact and fiction in the novel, what remains relatively stable or “sticky” throughout the novel are the letters from Jun Reguero that Jay carries with him back to the Philippines. We suggest that these letters can potentially serve as a form of “dissensus” that challenges the constant redistribution of the sensible in the novel.

    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie rodzajów i zróżnicowania przestrzennego nazw ulic związanych z religią w miastach archidiecezji gdańskiej. Źródłem informacji o liczbie i oficjalnych nazwach ulic w miastach była baza danych TERYT Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego. Nazwy religijne ulic miast archidiecezji gdańskiej wskazują głównie na rzymskokatolicką tradycję (99%). Tylko ul. Menonitów w Gdańsku pochodzi z innego wyznania chrześcijańskiego, a pozostałe 48 nazw wywodzi się spoza chrześcijańskiego kręgu religii starożytnych Greków i Rzymian czy religii ludów słowiańskich i bałtyjskich. Liczba i rodzaj nazw ulic związanych z religią zależy od wielkości jednostki osadniczej oraz jej przeszłości.
    The aim of the paper is to show the kinds and spatial differentiation of street names related to religion in cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Gdansk. There are only 173 street names (4%) originated from religious culture among 4296 streets in 12 urban units. The database TERYT of Central Statistical Office in Warsaw was the source of information about official street number and names in the cities. Religious street names (also called in literature sacral or cult names) of Gdansk archdiocese towns indicate mainly Roman Catholic tradition (99%). Only Mennonites St. in Gdansk comes from other Christian denominations and 48 street names derive from non-Christian origin like ancient Greek and Roman religions, Slavic and Baltic religions. The most frequently chosen street name is John Paul’s II and St Adalbert (patron saint of Gdansk archdiocese and Poland) which are present in every other town. Contrary to Gdansk and Gdynia small towns characterise a bigger share of street names coming from clergymen. The participation of religious street names differs very much from 0% in Hel to 10,2% in neighbouring Jastarnia which is connected to their dissimilar history. Since 1989 local governments often came back to pre-war street patrons and started to give names after recently died priests of merit to local community.

    W prezentowanym tekście przedstawieni zostali najbardziej popularni święci patroni, którzy umieszczani byli i nadal są w kapliczkach wiejskich na obszarze województwa lubelskiego. Przeprowadzona kwerenda pokazała, jacy święci cieszyli się większym powodzeniem w danym subregionie i z czego to wynikało. Ukazane zostały także zmienności form eksponowania patronactwa. Przebiegały one od rzeźb drewnianych tych tradycyjnych, przez obrazy zwane oleodrukami, aż po obecnie często umieszczane gipsowe figury i wreszcie ponowne pojawienie się rzeźb, ale już współczesnych w stylu ludowym. Zmiany tych form przedstawień wiążą się także ze zwiększeniem liczby umieszczanych we wnętrzu przedmiotów kultu. Są to zarówno figury, jak i obrazy oraz różne przedmioty ozdobne, pełniące funkcję dekoracyjną.
    This paper presents the most popular patron saints that were placed and are still in the rural chapels in the Lublin Voivodeship. Conducted research demonstrated what kind of saints were the most popular in this subregion and what reasons were for this. The forms changeability of the patronage exhibition were shown. They proceeded from the traditional wooden carvings, then paintings called chromolithographs and plaster statues, which are now often placed, and finally re-emergence of sculptures, but in the style of the contemporary folk. The changes of these representations forms are also associated with an increase in the number of cult objects placed inside. These are figures, icons, and various ornamental objects that perform a decorative function. Only peoples attitude remains unchangeable towards such objects, which are treated not only as a place of worship, a sacred space, but they also remind them past events or personal experience.

    The text presents the most common rites of the above mentioned period. The article is divided into four essential parts, namely: 1) a town in the face of threats, 2) Marian piety in a town, 3) Religious festivals in a town, 4) Pious foundations and confraternities in the town. Excerpts from texts of varied composition, subjects and literary value are an illustration of particular problems. The literary images the author refers to show church events which were important for the Old Polish society. They are indirect evidence that the Old Polish religious ritual with its whole diversity of common piety forms had a clear positive aspect, uniting the whole society in terms of a practiced and cultivated system of values.

    The study sums up previous research of Great Moravian dedications. The research of this issue is rather challenging – mainly because a lot of then churches existed only for a short period of time. Many of Great Moravian churches were built during the 9th century and perished around 900 AD which means that they were in existence only for several decades and only few of them “managed“ to leave some traces in historical sources during such short time. Nevertheless, the presented data proves that to a certain extent, reconstruction of Great Moravian dedications is possible. Obviously, this is a difficult task. Without a doubt, dedications of some sacral objects will never be found out. The text focuses mainly on 22 sacral objects, which have – surely or very likely – Great Moravian origin. Dedications of 12 objects are unknown (it concerns mainly the churches of destroyed hillforts in Mikulčice and Pohansko). Dedications of remaining 10 sacral objects are either known or we can reconstruct them with some degree of probability. Thus, in Great Moravia existed cults of most common Christian saints there – Mary, John (probably the Baptist), perhaps also Peter, George and Michael, but also cults connected with some specific missions – that from Diocese of Passau (Hippolytus, probably connected with missionaries from Austrian Benedictine abbey in Sankt Pölten ) and that of Cyril and Methodius (Clement). Dedications to Hippolytus and Clement are particularly interesting, also because in Moravia there are some later medieval churches dedicated to those saints. The possible connection between Great Moravian and post-Great-Moravian cults of those saints is one of the most interesting tasks for future research in this respect.
    Autor podsumowuje dotychczasowe badania nad wezwaniami kościołow wielkomorawskich. Badanie wezwań z tego okresu jest trudnym wyzwaniem, ponieważ wiele wielkomorawskich obiektow sakralnych istniało tylko przez krotki okres – obiekty te powstawały w ciągu IX wieku, a już na początku X wieku w wyniku najazdu węgierskiego wiele z nich przestało istnieć, nie pozostawiając śladow w źrodłach pisanych. Mimo to w części przypadkow można poznać patrocinia, z reguły wykorzystując ich ślady w źrodłach poźniejszych. Przedmiotem zainteresowania autora są 22 obiekty sakralne, ktore z pewnością lub dużą dozą prawdopodobieństwa powstały w czasach wielkomorawskich. Patrocinium 12 obiektow nie udało się określić (chodzi głownie o kościoły z grodow w Mikulčicach i Pohansku), natomiast w przypadku pozostałych 10 albo wezwanie jest znane, albo można go określić z pewnym prawdopodobieństwem. Z badań wynika, że w państwie wielkomorawskim nadawano patrocinia Najświętszej Marii Panny oraz św. Jana (najprawdopodobniej Chrzciciela), stosunkowo prawdopodobne są rownież wezwania św. Jerzego, św. Michała Archanioła oraz św. Piotra. Na Wielkich Morawach istniało rownież patrocinium św. Hipolita, związane najpewniej z działalnością misjonarską austriackich benedyktynów z klasztoru Sankt Polten, oraz dość prawdopodobnie św. Klemensa, związane z misją świętych Cyryla i Metodego, ktorzy relikwie tego świętego przynieśli na Morawy.

    Opis:
    Engravers of the post-Tridentine period recorded the most important events of their time in their etching graphics. They created these works with a view to memorialise the events, but also in order to inform the public opinion about them and to influence their thinking. Hagiographic iconography was among the most frequent graphic themes of the time, which was owing to the atmosphere of the Tridentine reforms. The Council of Trent rediscovered art as a medium for communicating the religious message. The 16th and the 18th century witnessed an excessive confrontation between the European denominations, brutal religious wars and the Turkish invasion into Christian countries. Artistic accounts of the era display a lot of martial motifs, with noticeable emphasis on the endangered status of Christianity. Catholic Church directed human thinking towards God as an Almighty Power holding the world in His hands. The etching graphics that have survived until today testify to the prevalence of this message. The role of the Divine Providence was repeatedly highlighted, as was the mediation of the Mother of God and the Saints: they implored God to spare Christianity from the religious and military turmoil. The paper draws upon a vast selection of European etching graphics to present the power of the iconographic propaganda, with a special focus on the protective and supportive role of the Patron Saints.

    Prague Castle was the most important burial site of the Czech rulers and their relatives. The graves are located in the Church of the Virgin Mary, in St. George Church and Convent, and, in the greatest numbers in the St. Vitus Cathedral. Reliquary tombs of the most important Czech patron saints are also located at Prague Castle – in St. George Basilica, in St. Vitus Cathedral and in All Saints Church. We also know the graves of 12 Prague bishops that are located in the St. Vitus Cathedral. The majority of the aforementioned graves have been opened several times in the past for a variety of reasons, that caused various problems, the most serious of which involved the confusion of relics. The first systematic anthropological investigations were conducted at the beginning of the 20th century. The remains of nearly all historical personalities buried at Prague Castle were available for another anthropological study conducted in the 1960s. Currently, the research continues with modern nature science analyzes. In the past, removed grave goods did not receive proper care for the most part, mainly due to a lack of understanding as to what constituted correct procedures for handling artefacts deposited for years in the unsuitable conditions of graves and tombs. The grave goods themselves were often restored in an inappropriate manner. The restoration situation improved significantly after the establishment of restoration and conservation workshops in 2000. The opening of graves is problematic and, from an ethical point of view, should be performer only to a very limited extent. Necessary construction work is a common reason for disruption, and in this case remains should be treated with respect. And if grave goods are removed, they must be cared for in a proper manner, as these artefacts are often irreplaceable heritage whose scientific study is a legitimate pursuit. The mere lust for knowledge, often connected with efforts to generate sensation, does not entitle us to disturb the resting place of our ancestors with ill-considered interventions.
    Zamek Praski był najważniejszym miejscem pochówku czeskich władców i ich krewnych. Groby znajdują się w kościele Matki Boskiej, w kościele i klasztorze pod wezwaniem św. Jerzego oraz, najliczniej, w katedrze św. Wita. Grobowce z relikwiami najważniejszych świętych patronów Czech również znajdują się na Zamku Praskim w bazylice św. Jerzego, katedrze św. Wita oraz kościele Wszystkich Świętych. Wiemy także o grobach dwunastu praskich biskupów w katedrze św. Wita. Większość wspomnianych grobów otwierano już kilkukrotnie w przeszłości z różnych powodów, co przysporzyło różnego rodzaju problemów, spośród których najpoważniejszym było mylenie relikwii. Pierwsze systematyczne badania antropologiczne przeprowadzono na początku XX w. Szczątki niemal wszystkich postaci historycznych pochowanych na Zamku Praskim zostały udostępnione do innego badania antropologicznego przeprowadzonego w latach 60. XX w. Obecnie trwają dalsze badania obejmujące nowoczesne analizy w zakresie nauk przyrodniczych. Wydobyte w przeszłości wyposażenie grobowe w większości przypadków nie było należycie traktowane głównie ze względu na brak świadomości prawidłowych procedur postępowania z artefaktami, które wiele lat spędziły w nieodpowiednich warunkach panujących w grobach i grobowcach. Wyposażenie grobowe często było konserwowane w nieprawidłowy sposób. Poziom konserwacji znacznie wzrósł po tym, jak w 2000 r. powstały warsztaty renowacyjno-konserwatorskie. Otwieranie grobów jest problematyczne, a biorąc pod uwagę kwestie etyczne, powinno do niego dochodzić wyłącznie w ograniczonym zakresie. Częstym powodem są konieczne prace budowlane i w takich przypadkach należy okazywać szczątkom należyty szacunek. Z kolei z wydobywanym wyposażeniem grobowym należy postępować we właściwy sposób, gdyż artefakty te często stanowią niezastąpione dziedzictwo, które należy poddawać naukowym analizom. Sam głód wiedzy, często związany z próbą wywołania sensacji, nie upoważnia nas do zakłócania miejsc pochówku naszych przodków nieprzemyślanymi działaniami.
