Opis:
The influence of official church art, devotional literature, sermons, chants and etc. on folklore and folk religious art were discussed by some researchers. This article explores direct influences of Catholic Church’s teaching about Christ on the conception of Christ in Distress image and representation in folk/peasant culture. Here, interpretation of this image is closely related to the teaching of church, the religious literature and thus scarcely distanced from the official religiosity at all. The popular interpretation of Christ in Distress image was determined by the influence of various church texts on the distinctive peasant worldview.

The article discusses an important matter of singing traditional Polish Len-ten songs in the contemporary liturgical celebrations. The author raises the problem of continuous topicality of these old Polish melodies and simultane-ously presents their today’s value. The whole teaching of the Church and the dogmas are focused in all these liturgical chants and hymns. The author would like to protect all these pearls of sacred music from falling into the oblivion. In the presented article the attention is focused on the fact that the typical Polish traditions such as: devotion of Lenten Lamentations, the chants which are sung during the Stations of the Cross and the Cross adoration should be cultivated. Their great popularity and the unique atmosphere they create is achieved by the artistic value of the songs and their undoubted prayer charm.

The article argues that Krwawa ofiara Jezusa Chrystusa Syna Bożego (The Bloody Sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, 1616, 1621) by Wawrzyniec Chlebowski was not plagiarised from Pamiątka krwawa ofiary Jezusa Chrystusa Syna Bożego (The Memorial of the Blood Sacrifice of Jesus Christ the Son of God, 1610) by Abraham Rożniatowski. It argues that in terms of literary dependency Krwawa ofiara offers examples of imitation and compilation techniques. Moreover, the article indicates that the text does not plagiarize a short adaptation of Rożniatowski’s Pamiątka krwawa published under the title Zwierciadło (The Mirror, 1618). In my comparative analysis I have used the Open Anti-Plagiarism System (OSA). Chlebowski imitated the general pattern set by Rożniatowski, but introduced a number of additions, shortened or reorganised some parts, and replaced some elements with others. He also modified the original structure to create a handy and up-to-date meditation prayer-guidebook of the paths of the Calvary. The imitation strategies are visible on both the micro and the macro levels of the text whose reader becomes an active witness, a co-participant in Christ’s Passion and death.

Chociaż w świetle nauki nie można z całą pewnością stwierdzić, że Całun Turyński jest płótnem, w które w czasie pogrzebu był owinięty Jezus Chrystus, to jednak przez analogię można przeprowadzić badania porównawcze danych o Męce Pańskiej wyprowadzonych z Ewangelii z wynikami badań syndonologów zajmujących się analizą naukową Całunu. Artykuł jest próbą takiego właśnie porównania relacji Ewangelistów z danymi z Całunu Turyńskiego. Okazuje się, że nie ma w tych danych żadnych sprzeczności, wręcz pasują one w całości do ewangelicznych opisów. Co więcej, opisy te w wielu punktach są lapidarne. Natomiast badania nad Całunem dostarczają wielu szczegółów, o których ewangeliści nie wspominają.
Although in the light of science it cannot be stated with certainty that the Shroud of Turin is the cloth in which Jesus Christ was wrapped during the burial, by analogy there is a possibility to conduct comparative studies on the Lord’s Passion derived from the Gospels and with the results of research by the syndonologists dealing with scientific analysis of the Shroud. The article is an attempt to compare such the accounts of the Gospel writers with the data from the Shroud of Turin. It seems that there are no contradictions in these data, they even confirm the entire Gospel descriptions. Moreover, these descriptions in many points seem very concise. On the other hand, the study of the Shroud provides many details not mentioned by the Gospel writers.

The article analyses the construction of Jewish characters in the following late medieval Polish apocrypha: Rozmyślania dominikańskie, Rozmyślanie przemyskie, and Sprawa chędoga o męce Pana Chrystusowej. The characters are built on a contrast between the figure of Christ and his tormentors. The article studies the following aspects of the contrast: hyperbolized aggression, beastial imagery, and the impurity of the perpetrators (which is conspicuous in images originating from the humoral theories). The literary representation of Jews (rather than Roman soldiers) as the ‘physical’ culprits of the Crucifixion of the Saviour also plays an important role in the texts under discussion

Opis:
Passion Plays staged in Poland have a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. Dramatic presentations depicting Jesus Christ’s suffering and death have been subsequently undertaken over the ages. Polish Salesians, working in the field of education and evangelism, especially among young people, have also repeatedly directed paschal events with the help of Polish youth and for them. The three contemporary, but very different presentations of the mysteries of the death and resurrection of Christ, prepared by three different Salesian environments, in Czerwińsk, Krakow and Poznan, indicate a continuous need of updating this topic. Realized with the use of various modern theatrical forms and means under the supervision of professionals in theatre arts, they still attract a wide audience.

Im Artikel wird die Art und Weise analysiert, wie das Leiden sowohl in den Beschreibungen der Passion Christi als auch in dem den eigentlichen Text der Betrachtungen ergänzenden Lebenslauf von Emmerich, der die Frage nach dem Sinn des freiwillig auf sich genommenen Leidens stellt, präsentiert wird. Es werden die Funktionen geschildert, die der oft angewandten Hyperbel zugeschrieben werden. Angesprochen wird auch das Problem des Schmerzes, der mit dem Lesen über das Leiden selbst verbunden ist. Signalisiert wird  auch die Möglichkeit die von Brentano aufgeschriebenen und teilweise literarisch überarbeiteten Visionen von Emmerich als einen Text zu verstehen, der eine innere Wahrheit vermittelt, die nicht unbedingt an der faktografischen Wahrheit gemessen werden muss.
The paper discusses the representations of pain and suffering in Clemens Brentano’s „Das bittere Leiden unseres Herrn Jesu Christi nach den Betrachtungen der gottseligen A.K. Emmerich” [The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ]. It concerns not only the Passion of Christ but also the image of a visionary, a stigmatised nun. The aim of this study was to analyse the functions of hyperbole as well as pain which is the consequence of reading about suffering. The author of the paper suggests that one should look at the text using the category of an ‘inner truth’ that does not have to be identified with the truth of the verifiable details.

Głęboką wiarę w Boga i płynące z niej nadprzyrodzone spojrzenie na sprawy tego świata matka Józefa Joanna Hałacińska wyniosła z domu rodzinnego. Pójście za głosem Boga wymagało od niej przezwyciężenia wielu trudności. Ostateczną decyzję podjęła 14 maja 1887 r., wstępując do klauzurowych Sióstr Franciszkanek w Kętach, a następnie do Sióstr Serafitek. Przez wiele lat odczuwała Boży nakaz założenia Zgromadzenia, w którym w sposób szczególny byłaby czczona Męka Pańska. Nakaz ten był na tyle wyraźny i mocny, że była zmuszona przedstawić go przełożonym zakonnym. W krótkim czasie otrzymała jako odpowiedź reskrypt Stolicy Apostolskiej z 13 lipca 1918 r. zezwalający na założenie Zgromadzenia. Widząc w tym wyraz woli Bożej, podjęła się dzieła założenia Zgromadzenia Sióstr Pasjonistek. W centrum duchowości Zgromadzenia postawiła cierpiącego Chrystusa. Wpatrując się z miłością w Jego Oblicze, dostrzegała niepowtarzalną wartość każdego człowieka, odkupionego Krwią Chrystusa. Dlatego pragnęła, by Siostry poprzez modlitwę, pracę i ofiarę jak najpełniej uczestniczyły w dziele zbawienia wszystkich ludzi. Matka Józefa Joanna Hałacińska zmarła w Płocku 9 lutego 1946 roku.
Józefa Joanna Hałacińska took her deep faith in God and the supernatural view of the world from her family home. Following the voice of the Lord required from Joanna overcoming many difficulties. Her final decision was made on May 14, 1887, when she entered the cloistered Franciscan Sisters in Kęty, and then the Seraphic Sisters. For many years she felt God’s command to found a congregation in which the Passion of Christ would be venerated in a special way. This commandment was so clear and strongthat she was forced to present it to the religious superiors. In a short time, she received in response a rescript from the Holy See dated July 13, 1918, permitting the founding of the Congregation. Seeing this as an expression of God’s will, she undertook the work of founding the Congregation of Passionist Sisters. She placed the suffering Christ at the center of the spirituality of the Congregation. Gazing with love at His Face, Mother perceived the unique value of every man redeemed by the Blood of Christ, therefore she wanted the Sisters to participate as much as possible in the work of salvation of all people through prayer, work, andsacrifice. Józefa Joanna Hałacińska died in Płock on 9 February 1946.

An important place in the experiences of the mystics of the Church is the fact of their participation in the Passion of Jesus Christ. Mystics can receive the gifts of an invisible puncture of the heart and invisible stigmata, also of a visible participation in whipping, crowning with thorns and the crucifixion of the Savior, which takes the form of the actual piercing of their hands, feet and heart. Complementing the phenomena is bloody sweat, bloody images and inscriptions. Thus, the passion phenomena given to them are a real reflection of the secrets of Golgotha. Their life takes the form of a living book of remembrance about the price of Salvation, which Jesus Christ paid on the wood of the Cross.
W doświadczeniach mistyków Kościoła ważne miejsce zajmuje fakt ich partycypacji w Męce Jezusa Chrystusa. Mistycy mogą otrzymać dary niewidzialnego przebicia serca i niewidzialnych stygmatów, również widzialnego udziału w biczowaniu, w ukoronowaniu cierniem i w ukrzyżowaniu Zbawiciela, co przyjmuje formę faktycznego przebicia ich dłoni, stóp i serca. Dopełnieniem są zjawiska krwawego potu i krwawych obraz i napisów. Tak więc fenomeny pasyjne im udzielone są rzeczywistym odbiciem tajemnic Golgoty. Ich życie przybiera formę żywej księgi pamięci o cenie Zbawienia, którą Jezus Chrystus zapłacił na drzewie Krzyża.

Artykuł jest przyczynkiem do badań nad ideą naśladowania Chrystusa, wyrażoną w ikonografii chrześcijańskiej za pomocą obrazowej metafory dźwigania krzyża wespół z Chrystusem. „Kto nie bierze swojego krzyża, a idzie za mną, nie jest mnie godzien” (Mt 10, 38) – z mocą nauczał Chrystus. „Kto chce pójść za mną, niech się zaprze samego siebie, niech weźmie swój krzyż i niech mnie naśladuje” (Mk 8, 34, par. Mt 16, 24). Wierni temu przesłaniu komentatorzy tekstów biblijnych, egzegeci, teologowie i mistycy przez kolejne wieki rozwijali, pogłębiali, komentowali i objaśniali ideę naśladowania Chrystusa, posługując się chętnie także biblijną metaforą „wzięcia krzyża na swoje ramiona”.
The article is a monograph on the idea of following Christ, expressed in Christian iconography through the metaphor of bearing the cross together with Christ. „Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:38) was Christ’s powerful message. „Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34, par. in Matthew 16:24). Abiding by those words, Commentators of Biblical texts, experts on exegesis, theologians and mystics for centuries have developed, elaborated and explicated on the idea of following Christ, readily using the Biblical metaphor of „taking the cross upon one’s arms”.

W artykule omówiono motyw torcular Christi występujący w poezji barokowej. Mistyczna tłocznia ma proweniencję starotestamentową, a w tradycji chrześcijańskiej łączy się z Viae Dolorosae. W poezji religijnej XVII w. ujawnia się w porównaniu krwi Chrystusa do soku wyciśniętego w prasie z owocu winorośli i jest wykorzystywana w kreowaniu barokowego obrazu makabrycznej Męki Chrystusa. Obecność i symbolika tego motywu została przedstawiona na podstawie wybranych tekstów A. Rożniatowskiego, W. Potockiego, J.A. Morsztyna, W. Kochowskiego, W. Bartoszewskiego, K. Bolesławiusza, A. Wieszczyckiego i K. Miaskowskiego. Zwrócono też uwagę na motywy dolorystyczne – integralnie związane z Pasją – i na ich paralelną relację z męką Matki Bożej: udręczeniu Jezusa towarzyszą duchowe męczarnie Maryi. Ustalono, że kontemplacja zmaltretowanego i krwią zbroczonego ciała Zbawiciela i dramatu Jego Matki dostarcza sensualnych wrażeń, które przez wiarę umożliwiają przekroczenie granic zmysłowej percepcji i „przebóstwienie” ludzkiej zmysłowości oraz edukują człowieka baroku.
In the article I discussed the motive of torcular Christi which takes place in baroque poetry. The mystic press has Old Testament provenance and in Christian tradition it is connected with Viae Dolorosae topic. In seventeenth century’s religious poetry this provenance shows in comparing Christ’s blood to the juice extruded from grapes in press and it is used in creating baroque image of gruesome Passion of Christ. The presence and symbolic of this motive is presented on the basis of selected texts written by A. Rożniatowski, W. Potocki, J.A. Morsztyn, W. Kochowski, W. Bartoszewski, K. Bolesławiusz, A. Wieszczycki and K. Miaskowski. I also paid attention to doloristic motives integrally connected with Passion and to their parallel relation with torment of Saint Mary – while Christ is tormenting, his Mother also goes through spiritual tortures. The proclamation about the crucified and risen Jesus Christ is the nucleus of the Christian preaching. There are however moments in the liturgical year in which the Passion of Jesus is emphasized in a special way. In addition to the liturgy of Palm Sunday and Good Friday there is also popular devotion during the Lent time, which delivers opportunity to preach the Passion of Jesus crucified. The most famous popular Passion piety associated with the proclamation of the word of God are: The last words of Christ from the Cross and a special devotion in Poland called “Gorzkie żale” – “Bitter complains”. The latter is typically Polish. An important part of this devotion is the sermon, whose main theme is the salvific dimension of the Passion of Christ. It is evangelical story about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which provides for the source for these sermons. This article presents the origins, context, content and the structure of sermons preached in Poland during the popular passion devotion.
Głoszenie prawdy o Chrystusie ukrzyżowanym i zmartwychwstałym stanowi jądro chrześcijańskiego przepowiadania. Są jednak w ciągu roku kościelnego okoliczności, w których dominuje tematyka pasyjna. Oprócz liturgii Niedzieli Palmowej i Wielkiego Piątku okazją do przepowiadania pasyjnego są nabożeństwa ludowe służące rozważaniu męki Pańskiej, odprawiane głównie w okresie Wielkiego Postu. Są one wyrazem pobożności pasyjnej. Do najbardziej znanych nabożeństw pasyjnych związanych z głoszeniem słowa Bożego należą: nabożeństwo ostatnich słów Chrystusa z krzyża i nabożeństwo gorzkich żali. To ostatnie jest typowo polskie. Jego istotnym elementem jest kazanie pasyjne, którego podstawowym tematem jest zbawczy wymiar męki Chrystusa. Źródłem dla tych kazań są ewangeliczne opowiadania o ukrzyżowaniu Chrystusa. Artykuł przedstawia genezę, kontekst, tematykę i strukturę kazań pasyjnych.

The subject of Krasiński’s Non-prayer Prayer Poems is a number of his works which although fit the structural characteristics of the genre, are not in fact prayers. There are some other reasons for using this literary forms.. For instance, Daj jej o Panie… (Give Her Oh Lord...) is an instruction for the beloved one on how to behave in difficult life situations, and on the other hand a treatise on philosophy and religion. Another example is Boże, wysłuchaj modlitwę moją serdeczną… (God, Hear my Cordial Prayer…) which is a classic erotic poem addressed to Joanna Bobrowa. O Boże, błogosław tym… (Dear God bless those…) is yet another example of this phenomenon since it is a courtesy gesture towards the Ankwicz family and at the same time a personal and unlikely fantasy about the end of the world. The article reveals both Krasiński’s genealogical awareness of the prayer poem form as well as his religious attitude.
Przedmiotem pracy Niemodlitewne modlitwy Krasińskiego jest grupa utworów poety które, mimo że spełniają cechy strukturalne tego gatunku, w rzeczywistości modlitwami nie są. Mamy tu bowiem do czynienia z użyciem tej formy literackiej do innych celów. I tak np. Daj jej o Panie… to z jednej strony swoisty instruktarz dla ukochanej, jak postępować w trudnych biograficznie sytuacjach, a z drugiej strony traktat filozoficzno-religijny. Boże, wysłuchaj modlitwę moją serdeczną… to z kolei klasyczny erotyk kierowany do Joanny Bobrowej. O Boże, błogosław tym… to natomiast swego rodzaju gest kurtuazyjnej wdzięczności wobec rodziny Ankwiczów, połączony z osobistą i dość oryginalną fantazją o końcu świata. Artykuł ten ujawnia zarówno świadomość genologiczną Krasińskiego w zakresie modlitwy poetyckiej, jak też jego postawę religijną.

Artykuł dotyczy polskiej religijności i pobożności doby potrydenckiej, łączącej nova et vetera — elementy odziedziczone po wiekach dawnych oraz zupełnie nowe. Religijność tamtego okresu z jednej strony opierała się na dziedzictwie późnego średniowiecza, z drugiej zaś — wprowadziła elementy nowej pobożności, rozbudowała pewne formy kultu. Artykuł rejestruje różne formy kultu Męki Pańskiej, obrzędowość kalwaryjską, praktyki ascetyczne, pobożność maryjną i obszar hagiografii. Koncentruje się przede wszystkim na polskich cechach religijności potrydenckiej, ale wprowadza także kontekst europejski w celu wskazania szerszych doświadczeń w tym zakresie, zwrócenia uwagi na narodowość i powszechność katolicyzmu polskiego oraz uwydatnienia dialogu z Europą.
