Opis:
The main theme of the paper is the issue of the foundations of social life. The author begins by outlining the tradition of the Enlightenment represented by Immanuel Kant, who attempted to justify rationally the basis of social life. Then she moves back to antiquity, to Plato, the sophists and Aristotle, to show their attitude towards the foundations of public life in order to briefly present in the following stage the original concept of Baruch Spinoza and, in more details, the views of Blaise Pascal, who is the main figure of this presentation. The final part of the paper includes a draft of the philosophical thought of postmodernism, represented by such intellectuals as Michel Foucault, Richard Rorty and Jürgen Habermas. The author additionally presents an exposition of the concept of habitus by Pierre Bourdieu, interpreting it accordingly to her previous reflections. The course of thought in these considerations intends to formulate a thesis which takes a stand against the most obvious opinion of Enlightenment, purporting that neither the contemporary liberal democracy nor people’s respect for it and their will to obey the law are founded on reason.

Opis:
A hybrid method is presented for the integration of low-, mid-, and high-frequency driver filters in loud- speaker crossovers. The Pascal matrix is exploited to calculate denominators; the locations of minimum values in frequency magnitude responses are associated with the forms of numerators; the maximum values are used to compute gain factors. The forms of the resulting filters are based on the physical meanings of low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filters, an intuitive idea which is easy to be understood. Moreover, each coefficient is believed to be simply calculated, an advantage which keeps the software- implemented crossover running smoothly even if crossover frequencies are being changed in real time. This characteristic allows users to efficiently adjust the bandwidths of the driver filters by subjective listening tests if objective measurements of loudspeaker parameters are unavailable. Instead of designing separate structures for a low-, mid-, and high-frequency driver filter, by using the proposed techniques we can implement one structure which merges three types of digital filters. Not only does the integra- tion architecture operate with low computational cost, but its size is also compact. Design examples are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the presented methodology.

Opis:
The author draws on several literary and philosophical approaches to bring out some of the themes embedded in Pascal’s wager, such as: the world as an arena of one’s confrontation with one’s vision of oneself; the notions of ‘here’ and ‘there’ in relation to the intuition of the immortality of the individual human soul; God as an answer to human longing for a Witness; belief in God as ultimate concern for human life; the transnatural destiny of the human person. These existential insights are complemented by the analytical considerations and criticism of Pascal’s wager put forward by Richard Swinbume in his book Faith and Reason (2005). Swinburne’s inquiry pivots around the problem of a person’s responsibility for the beliefs he/she holds and what it means to be rational. The purpose of the article is to actualize the question: What is the stake in Pascal’s wager?

Opis:
Pascal’s wager is the name of an argument in favor of belief in God presented by Blaise Pascal in §233 of Thoughts. Ian Hacking (1972) pointed out that Pascal’s text involves three different versions of the argument. This paper proceeds from this identification, but it concerns an examination of the rhetorical strategy realized by Pascal’s argumentation. The final form of Pascal’s argument is considered as a product that could be established only through a specific process of persuasion led with respect to an intended reader with a particular set of initial beliefs. The text uses insights from the pragma‐dialectical approach to argumentation, especially the concept of rhetorical effectiveness of particular choices from the topical potential. The argumentation structure of Pascal’s wager is considered to be a reflection of the anticipated course of dialogue with the reader critically testing the sustainability of Pascal’s standpoint “You should believe in God”. Based on the argumentation reconstruction of three versions of the argument, Pascal’s idea of opponent/audience is identified. A rhetorical analysis of the effects of his argumentative strategy is proposed. The analysis is based on two perspectives on Pascal’s argument: it examines the strategy implemented consistently by all arguments and the strategy of a formulation of different versions of the wager.

In this paper we discussed an economic order quantity inventory model for deteriorating items with time-dependent demand rate. Here the demand is considered as a quadratic function of time and deteriorating items follow a Gompertz distribution deterioration. Stock out is not permitted and holding cost is constant. The deterioration cost, holding cost and the parameters α, β are assumed as a triangular fuzzy numbers. Our goal is to maximize the total profit of inventory optimization by using Pascal triangular method. A few numerical examples illustrate the implementation of the proposed model. Sensitivity analysis is the study of how to divide and allocate the uncertainty in the output of a mathematical model or system to different sources of input uncertainty.

The article deals with one of the most pressing topics in bioethics, namely the attitude to abortion. The author focuses on the interpretation of this practice as a kind of conflict between a woman and the fetus that she gestates (this conflict concerns women’s rights and duties to the fetus, its interests, and the moral status of the fetus in general). Considering several variants of arguments which protect women’s right to abortion (primarily utilitarian arguments based on analogy), the author tries to identify the structure of argumentation. Finally, she presents her own argument against the practice of terminating pregnancy.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to highlight – in a comparative approach – the versatility of the role of collectibles in the process of recollection among collectors in certain novels by Pascal Quignard. The analysis of the memorial discourse of collectors reveals two aspects: the different relationship to the value of the object (museum or intimate) and the power to trigger emotions. The discourse balances between an impersonal evocation, with emphasis on the material importance, the testimonial and aesthetic dimension of art objects from ancient times and a passionate and subjective description of small, banal objects, but charged with psychological meanings. The article demonstrates that excessively relating to time-/trace-objects by virtue of their documentary or commemorative value will lead to a failure of the memorisation process. Paradoxically, the collector always remains in search of the lost memory, despite the excess of material evidence he holds.

While the first of them symbolizes the epic narrative centered on the Résistance and the cult of heroism, the second one refers to the so far overlooked, traumatic aspects of war and occupation, focusing on the victims.
Dwa monumenty na wzgórzu Mont Valérien nieopodal Paryża – pomnik Francji Walczącej (1960) oraz późniejszy pomnik ku Pamięci Rozstrzelanych (2003) – można odczytać jako materialne odzwierciedlenie ewolucji w społecznej percepcji okresu 1940–1944 we Francji, stanowiącej zasadniczy temat niniejszego artykułu. Pierwszy z nich symbolizuje epicką narrację skupioną wokół Résistance i kultu bohaterstwa, dominującą od wczesnego powojnia do przełomu lat sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych, drugi odnosi się do dotychczas pomijanych, traumatycznych aspektów wojny i okupacji, skupia się na ofiarach.

Pascal intuited nothingness. As it is too strong, from Job and King Solomon in the Bible and beyond, intuition continued. Job met with misfortunes, diseases and lost his children. He intuited nothingness as the difficulties and darkness. In the extremity of glory of fame and fortune, King Solomon lost sight of truth and the essence of life. He intuited nothingness as emptiness and vanity. Pascal wrote about such two people in “Pensées”. We must not overlook this description. He was attacked by and suffered from illnesses from his boyhood. His condition was like that of Job. Pascal who left behind bright achievements in physics and mathematics is not found there. It is a light and a shadow of Pascal. However, he intuited nothingness in the shadow and in “Pensées” he developed a theory to deal with nothingness as the first principle. Energy is necessary to divide a particle. Further, a huge energy is necessary to subdivide a microscopic particle. Energy near infinity is necessary to subdivide it in the domain near nothingness. Nothingness continues to infinity. This viewpoint accords with that of the writer. Furthermore, Pascal preaches the world linkage of things, but this is extremely near the thought of the Engi of the Buddhism. This study is a development of the thoughts of Pascal.

Opis:
Pascal intuited nothingness very much as did King Solomon in the Bible. He experienced a clear and convincing vision of human being as a mere speck of dust in this enormous and infinite universe. He felt that in the face of eternity we, humans, are powerless and worthless creatures and belong to nothingness indeed. Seeing such powerlessness, helplessness, emptiness, vanity of humankind and tragedy that they bring sufficed Pascal to awaken and to realize nothingness. To add to King Solomon’s words in the Bible ‘vanity of vanity, all is vanity’ Pascal stressed that ‘human is no more than a reed, but a thinking reed’. Pascal was a supporter of the principle of nothingness as he both realized nothingness being the origin of all creation as well as he strove for that infinity. His ideas by far precede the advent of the Big-Bang theory, being the beginning of the world out of nothingness, as well as conform with the description of the world creation from the Bible’s ‘Genesis’. Here, I would like to present Pascal not only in the light of the prevailing view of his dialectics on the Church, but also as a supporter, conscious or not, of the nothingness principle. In European philosophy, the thinkers that are associated with the development of the concept of nothingness are existentialists, the most famous of which were Nietzsche, Heidegger and Sartre to list only a few. However their philosophical systems would never have a chance of being created, if there was no Pascal, who laid the foundations for them long before. By many thinkers Pascal had been looked down upon for his strong attachment to the Church and resulting from his religious belief that casts a shadow on his work. Still, if looked at from the nothingness principle perspective, that work of his cannot be underestimated.
