Opis:
The micro-Particle Image Velocimetry (micro-PIV) was used to measure flow velocities in micro-channels in two passive micromixers: a microfluidic Venturi mixer and a microfluidic spiral mixer, both preceded by standard “Y” micromixers. The micro-devices were made of borosilicate glass, with micro-engineering techniques dedicated to micro-PIV measurements. The obtained velocity profiles show differences in the flow structure in both cases. The micro-PIV enables understanding the micro-flow phenomena and can help to increase reproducibility of micromixers in mass production.

Opis:
In the presented paper, the authors focus on the analysis of flow structure in various configurations of a circular-planar SOFC fuel channel. The research was carried out on the premise that a proper channel design would help minimize the thermal stress in the cell, which is affected by the heat generated and consumed by the reforming, water gas-shift and hydrogen consumption reactions. For the measurement process, PIV method was used to calculate the velocity fields, and an extensive error analysis was done to evaluate the accuracy of the calculated velocities.
W zaprezentowanym artykule, tematem realizowanych badań jest analiza eksperymentalna struktury przepływu gazu w trzech modelach kanałów transportowych ogniwa paliwowego typu SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell).

Opis:
Particle Image Velocimetry is getting more and more often the method of choice not only for visualization of turbulent mass flows in fluid mechanics, but also in linear and non-linear acoustics for non-intrusive visualization of acoustic particle velocity. Particle Image Velocimetry with low sampling rate (about 15Hz) can be applied to visualize the acoustic field using the acquisition synchronized to the excitation signal. Such phase-locked PIV technique is described and used in experiments presented in the paper. The main goal of research was to propose a model of PIV systematic error due to non-zero time interval between acquisitions of two images of the examined sound field seeded with tracer particles, what affects the measurement of complex acoustic signals. Usefulness of the presented model is confirmed experimentally. The correction procedure, based on the proposed model, applied to measurement data increases the accuracy of acoustic particle velocity field visualization and creates new possibilities in observation of sound fields excited with multi-tonal or band-limited noise signals.

Opis:
The paper presents results of transonic flow field visualization over a laminar airfoil in high-speed wind tunnel. Quite recently, considerable attention has been paid to experimental investigations of an interaction between the shock and the boundary layer for aerodynamics applications. The purpose of the paper is to investigate development of the flow separation over laminar airfoil at transonic speeds. In a course of presented studies, the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method was used for instantaneous velocity measurements of flow field in the test section of N-3 Institute of Aviation transonic wind tunnel. The object of the research was a laminar airfoil inclined at various angles. The effect of the varying angle of incidence on the flow filed was investigated. The freestream Mach number was 0.7. The results of the PIV measurements were analysed in order to identify the type of the separation from the measured velocity fields. Three forms of separation for low, medium and high angle of incidence was distinguished. The results are in good agreement with theoretical models reported in the literature. The study showed that application of quantitative flow visualisation technique allowed gaining new insights on the complex phenomenon of transonic flow over airfoil. The results of the presented research can be used for better understanding of the mechanism of the flow separation process in transonic flow over airfoils and fluid structure interactions.

Sedimentation of red blood cell aggregates was experimentally investigated by optical imaging. Suspensions of red blood cell at low hematocrit were obtained from blood of healthy donors. The velocity of three-dimensional red blood cell aggregates was measured using particle image velocimetry. The magnitude and spatial correlation functions of the velocity fluctuations of the settling aggregates were determined. It is shown that the fluctuations in the settling velocity exhibit characteristic correlations in the form of swirls. The formation of 3-D red blood cell aggregates leads to a large initial swirl. The growth of the aggregates and their sedimentation diminishes the swirls size.

Opis:
This paper presents the use of new modern methods for the research of movement of material on a belt conveyor. One of the innovative methods is Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), which was used to scan and assess the two-dimensional vector field of speed of particles on the belt conveyor. Outputs from PIV were compared to simulations of the same transport process. These simulations were performed using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Four transport speeds of material were assessed for a real and simulative belt conveyor model. Software tracking of particle movement was used to determine and compare the trajectories of paths of particles leaving the belt conveyor drum. Validation of the DEM simulation of material movement over a belt conveyor drum using PIV provided acceptable results in the area of particle speed fields. Comparison of the particle path trajectory corresponds to the preliminary hypothesis which leads to calibration of the DEM simulation. The results and assessment of this paper were created based on validation.

A mesh-coupled axial blade distributor was tested for fluidization of particles in a swirling fluidized bed. The bed velocity was estimated experimentally using a high-speed imaging device and MATLAB supported particle image velocimetry (PIV). The bed velocity was also predicted statistically with a response surface analysis method. During statistical analysis, the confidence interval of bed velocity remained between 0.49485 and 0.49998. The bed velocity was measured about 0.49741m/s and 0.538m/s through experimental and statistical methods, respectively. The experimental and statistical analysis revealed similar bed weights and superficial velocities with a slight difference of 6.4◦ in blade angles.

The great progress in the field of photogrammetry and remote sensing has broken the frontiers of this kind of science. One of the good examples might be Particle Image Velocimetry method. This paper is devoted to the analysis of images recorded by using this particular method. The experiment that we would like to describe took place in the shallow water at the beach near the Gdynia Harbor. We also would like to answer the question, is it possible to trace the trajectories of individual particles?
Postęp jaki nastąpił w zakresie fotogrametrii i teledetekcji spowodował, iż tematyka którą obecnie zajmują się badacze na całym świecie zdecydowanie wykroczyła poza tradycyjne ramy w jakich zwykle postrzega się te dziedziny nauki. Jednym z przykładów jest bez wątpienia anemometria obrazowa. Obrazy generowane przez tą metodę pomiarową są przedmiotem rozważań niniejszego artykułu.

Opis:
A novel three products hydrocyclone screen (TPHS) has been successfully developed; it consists of a cylindrical screen embedded in a conventional hydrocyclone (CH). In the new liquid cyclone, the combination of centrifugal classification and screening was employed for particle separation based on size. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow behaviour in TPHS using numerical simulation and experimental validation. A computational fluid dynamics simulation with a 4.35 million grid scheme and linear pressure–strain RSM generated the economic and grid-independence solution, which agreed well with the experiments of particle image velocimetry and water split. The velocity vector profile reveals that TPHS represented similar flow patterns to CH, wherein in addition to the outer downward swirl flow, inner upward swirl flow, central down-flow, second circulatory flow, and mantle, a particular fluid flow named screen underflow was created in TPHS owing to the presence of a cylindrical screen. The velocity distribution demonstrates that in TPHS, relative to CH, with the increase in radius, the lower tangential and higher radial velocity first increased to a peak and subsequently decreased, while the axial velocity primarily reduced to zero, increased in the opposite direction, and finally decreased rapidly to zero again. In addition, a disadvantageous flow, namely, screen backflow, was generated in TPHS, wherein the farther away the flow is from the feed inlet, the earlier this flow behaviour occurred. However, the rational scheme of aperture size and screen length can completely remove the screen backflow in TPHS.

The aim of the paper was to develop determination methods of sedimentation characteristics using PIV image anemometry and suspension image analysis. Two methods of the investigation of sed- imentation process based on visualization techniques were developed. In the first one, using PIV method, vector fields of the velocity of settling particles are determined and then average particle velocities are calculated to establish the so called sedimentation dynamics curve. In the second one, the methods of suspension image analysis are utilized to determine the positions of the upper dis- continuity and to establish the sedimentation curve. Laboratory research on the sedimentation of agalit particles suspended in glycerine was conducted (using PIV method). Additionally, industrial research on the sedimentation of water-absorbing granular material used after the first carbonation (carbonation I) was conducted in a sugar factory (using the second method). The research consisted of photographic registration of images of the settling suspension by means of the time-lapse photog- raphy technique. A laboratory study was conducted for four values of the volume concentration of agalit particles in glycerine (0.5; 1.0; 1.5 and 2.0 vol%). The research methodology, the scope of the conducted measurements and sample research results together with conclusions are presented in this paper.

The article discusses application of Robust Optical Flow Estimation for increasing of Particle Image Velocimetry measurement resolution. Nowadays, one of the promising approaches for increasing the performance of the PIV systems is application of the Optical Flow Estimation for image analysis. Nevertheless, some of the OF implementations do not perform well in case of motion discontinues typically occurring in the PIV images. The purpose of this study is to validate the performance of the Robust Optical Flow Estimation. The tests were performed on simulated images of vortex flow and the results were compared with displacement fields calculated with the typical correlation PIV algorithm. The velocity for high and medium particle concentration was similar for Optical Flow and PIV-like analysis. Furthermore, the performance of the robust optical flow framework was tested with images corrupted with blurs and occlusions. The tests proved good performance of proposed analysis in case of non-Gaussian sources of measurement errors. The robust estimation framework performed well in the case of common image artefacts and proved to be a promising method for precise PIV flow measurements. The presented approach can be useful in development hybrid OF-PIV post processing software aimed for high-resolution measurements and provide a help in designing of experimental investigation of microscale fluid flow phenomena.
