Opis:
Jevons paradox described the phenomenon in 1865. By the English economist William Jevons Staneleya in the book The Coal Question (The issue of carbon), which foresaw the gradual depletion of the British coal deposits. In general, this paradox states that the more efficiently we use a given raw material, the more its consumption increases. In the case of coal, the more effective use of energy contained in it with the use of steam engines resulted in an increase in demand for this raw material. The aim of the article is to analyze the occurrence of Jevons' paradox in economics and ecology based on the analysis of foreign literature. The article also points to the relations that exist between ecology and economics, on the example of coal mining in North America.

Opis:
A paradox is an argument that produces an inconsistency, typically within logic or common sense. Most paradoxes are known to be invalid arguments but are still valuable in promoting critical thinking. In astrophysics and physical cosmology, Olbers’ paradox (photometric; “dark night-sky”), named after German scholar Heinrich Olbers, is the argument that the darkness of the night sky conflicts with the assumption of an infinite and eternal static universe. If the universe is static and populated by an infinite number of stars, any sight line from Earth must end at the bright surface of a star, so the night sky should be completely bright. This contradicts the observed darkness of the night. Modern research on the essence of the photometric paradox (and attempts to neutralize it undertaken in the history of science) lead to the conclusion that its paradoxicality is resulting primarily from the precedence of human thought (ideas, theories) in relation to the possibility of its proper empirical verification. Therefore, the paradox of “dark night-sky” and attempts to overcome it may be instructive proof that something so plain and obvious, as available to anyone look at the starry night sky, sometimes, for respectively keen observer, give an opportunity to look ahead much further (and sometimes more accurately to reality) than empirical research allow at the moment. The photometric paradox created an opportunity for the unveiling of a new cognitive horizon by exceeding the existing scheme of thought and thereby acquiring new scientific knowledge, enriching the knowledge gained so far and deepening our understanding of Universe.

„My name is Nobody” — says Odysseus in Homer’s epic and these words deliver him from death. On the one hand, both the name and the very act of speech constitute a proof of existence of the speaker, on the other hand, however, its existence is undermined by the negation implied by the very notion of „nobody”. Unclear ontological/referential connotations of „nobody” evoke textual effects that are based on the notions of indeterminacy and self-reference — two basic constituents of every figure of thought referred to as paradox. Thus, it seems hardly surprising that Kafka explores the potentiality of this life-saving wordplay. The theme of nobody is deeply rooted in the binary logic, but, also, attempts to exceed its limits. Exceeding these limits is encouraged in every excursion to Kafka’s realm.

The study focuses on the characteristically Pascalian attempt at synthesizing of contradictory and intensely remote extremes of existence. Assuming the form of existential dialectics, the paradox of Pascalian vision refers in particular to the human, demonstrating the non-reducible tension between the intuitive (irrational) and the rational (panlogical); between the heart and the mind, between faith and knowledge. The conviction of human misery or the worldly vanity is fused here with the simultaneous sense of human greatness (the power of thought). The tension which therefore spans those dichotomous ontological-ontic dimensions is the determining factor of the constitution of individual existence.

Opis:
W artykule opisane zostały cztery kategorie analogii w refleksji Hansa Ursa von Balthasara: analogia entis, analogia fidei, analogia libertatis i analogia caritatis. Każda z tych kategorii została przeanalizowana w perspektywie towarzyszących jej paradoksów: paradoks jedności-wielości (nieudzielności-udzielności), paradoks universale concretum, paradoks wolności skończonej i nieskończonej, paradoks krzyża i zstąpienia do piekieł. Zasada analogii została tu skonfrontowana z metodą dostrzegania paradoksu  i związanej z nim tajemnicy. Każde z zagadnień omówione zostało z uwzględnieniem źródeł myśli Balthasara (Anzelm, Przywara, Barth, de Lubac, von Speyr) i ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego oryginalnej refleksji. Pozwoliło to wyciągnąć wniosek dotyczący centralnego miejsca analogii miłości w koronnym dziele Balthasara, zwanym Trylogią.
The article examines four categories of analogy in the reflection of Hans Urs von Balthasar: analogia entis, analogia fidei, analogia libertatis and analogia caritatis. Each of these categories has been analyzed in the perspective of the accompanying paradoxes: the paradox of unitymultiplicity (incommunicability-communicability), the paradox of universale concretum, the paradox of finite and infinite freedom, the paradox of the cross and of the descent into hell. The principle of analogy has been confronted here with the method of perceiving the paradox and the mystery related to it. Each of the above problems has been discussed taking into account the sources of Balthasar’s thought (Anselm, Przywara, Barth, de Lubac, von Speyr) and with particular emphasis on his original reflection. This allows for a conclusion about the central place of the analogy of love in Balthasar’s crowning work called The Trilogy.

The contemporary ‘face’ of Bruno Schulz is a result of the collaboration between several visions as well as the specific relation between presence and absence. To a large extent, this fact allows the treatment of Schulz’s reconstructed image not as the static whole, but rather as a dynamic and open identity, defined not only by the biographical reconstructions, but also by its fragmentation and incompleteness. One of the questions that the article evokes is, whether absence can serve as a factor in decoding Schulz’s nature.

Opis:
The concept of ‘soul’ has for ages been a widespread and central category in the Russian national tradition, one through which the Russians seek to express their way of feeling and of comprehending their own community, territory, sense of existence, place and mission in the world. Thus, Russia is often treated as the ‘soul of the world,’ whereas her central power – actual (real) or potential (expected) – as the ‘soul of Russia.’ One of the consequences of the transformation over the last few centuries, symbolised by the name of Peter I, has been the emergence and rise of the Russian intelligentsia, perceived there, and perceiving itself, as at once an intellectual, cultural, ethical, social, political, ideological, historiosophical, and even quasi-sacral formation. In many ideas of the representatives of the Russian educated class the motif of ‘Russia’s soul,’ capable of reviving, revitalising and of transforming the existing reality, is associated namely with the intelligentsia. It is possible to find in them – even in those programmatically antisystemic and radically occidental – a whole array of features, structures and content typical of the Russian mental-cultural system, together with ways of perceiving, conceptualizing and problematizing the world – such that is, paradoxically, shared with the ideologies and supporters of the existing social order.

Opis:
In this paper a prehistory of the so called Olbers' paradox is discussed. The stress is laid not on the paradox and its solution within contemporary cosmology, but rather on its authorship: it is argued that Olbers was not the first to formulate the famous paradox. Some astronomers are quoted (Kepler, Halley, Cheseaux), who long before Olbers were aware of the problem of the darkness of the night sky and who wrote about it. Their solutions to the paradox in question were not correct, but neither was Olbers'; to resolve the paradox one has to assume that universe had its beginning and that it expands.

The aim of this article is to analyze Wisława Szymborska’s literary works in order to demon-strate that her aphoristic style is one of the most striking elements of her texts. Szymborska’s style is particularly notable in that it is ironically aphoristic, containing parody of typical aphoristic schemata, paradox and tautology. Through this style, her work not only enriches the traditional repertoire of the genre but seems also to justify an important feature of her writing: its philosophical and intellectual character often discerned by critics. As a consequence, quotes from her oeuvre frequently enter diverse anthologies of ‘wise and funny thoughts’ and collections of the so-called ‘winged’ words.

Innovation projects are of high importance in organizations. Company’s success is determined by the results of innovation projects. In the article, the key characteristics of innovation projects are outlined, as well as their determinants. The traditional approach to managing innovation projects is discussed. It is argued that, nowadays, such an approach is insufficient as the organizational environment is turbulent and a high risk of failure is associated with innovation projects. Based on these considerations, the parallel application of the agile methods in innovation project management is proposed. The main characteristics of that new approach are presented, as are contrasts to traditional project management. The advantages of that new approach are shown in relation to attaining the business goals of the organization, higher flexibility in product change management and a more expeditious response to changes within the turbulent environment of the organization.

This article examines the relationship between science and theology within a critical realist framework. Focusing on the role of metaphysics as a unifying starting point, especially in consideration of theological issues that are concerned with corporeality and temporality (such as in the incarnation). Some metaphysical challenges that lead to the appearance of “paradox” in the incarnation are highlighted, and the implications of two forms of holistic scientific ontology on the appearance of a paradox in the incarnation are explored. It is concluded that ultimately both science and theology are concerned with the nature of reality, and the search for coherent models that can describe the unseen. Whilst one should maintain a criticality to any realist conception of theological and scientific theories, a shared metaphysics ensures theological doctrine can continue to be interpreted with relevance in a world in which scientific thought is increasingly stretching into the meta-scientific.

The conviction that particularly political sphere abounds in permanent paradoxes, that they constitute its inherent attributes, was already familiar to political philosophy classics, although they expressed them in different ways. “The paradoxical mix of order and chaos compelled the Greeks to seek out more creative, inclusive and reflexive modes of thought and action”. One of them, Socrates, talked about “the true political craft”, that is a rejection of politics, and at the same time, its admission. The paradoxical features of politics that arise from human nature were examined by Thomas Hobbes. Jean-Jacques Rousseau observed the paradoxes that underlie the act of free will declaration. Carl Schmitt paid attention to the internal paradox of democracy, pointing out that despite the conditions of declared citizens equality, the policy is dominated by inequalities deriving from other spheres, particularly economy.

In 2020 and 2021, the entire evolution of human society is under the sign of a paradox, of the adversity of events, coming in avalanche. The tourist evolutions themselves suffer the imprint of the paradox. These paradoxes urgently require new paradigms, the famous ‘paradigm shifts’, mentality, optics, action. The purpose of this research is to outline the main aspects of the research problem and diagnose the situation, with focus on identifying hypotheses for future descriptive or causal research as well as to explore the reasons, attitudes and values of the paradigm and paradox, which differentiate the two notions approached: testing new concepts of forecasting, a product specific to the destination under analysis and in identifying other viable, sustainable alternatives and their analysis in parallel with modelling and promoting new ideas of tourism products or services, respectively improving the existing ones. This article aims to capitalise on the paradox, already successfully applied in economics by the author of the method and in shaping and delimiting ecotourism (in particular the ecotourism from the destination Țara Hațegului – Retezat), emphasising the role of self-contradiction of the field, through a specific type of economic reasoning, in which the rapid evolution of tourism risks are becoming its own cause of its disappearance, knowing that too much tourism kills tourism. Responsibility and the mesological spirit are the only ways to counteract the paradox phenomenon, even a paradigm in the metamorphosis of ecotourism.
