Opis:
The 2005 Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip dramatically changed the political situation of said territory. Due to the poor economic situation of its inhabitants, itself caused by years of Israeli policy of isolation, and general perception of being mistreated by the Israeli government, the power vacuum created in the wake of the withdrawal was filled by Hamas. The fundamentalists took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, which caused the decision-makers in Tel Aviv to take radical measures to deal with the organization. A tight blockade of the Gaza Strip was introduced and while it may have curbed some of Hamas activities, it also worsened the living conditions of the inhabitants, creating a humanitarian crisis. Israeli policy has been criticized by many members of the international community. Moreover, Tel Aviv carried out several military operations, two of which (“Cast Lead” in 2008/2009 and “Protective Edge” in 2014) were characterized by significantly high numbers of civilian deaths. All of these actions, aimed at eliminating terrorists and improving Israeli citizens' security, seem to be rather short-sighted. Israeli policy only popularizes Hamas propaganda among Palestinians, therefore strengthening the organization and creating a vicious circle of misery and violence.

On subjects that cannot be put to sleep. Anna Zawadzka in an interview with Jerzy JedlickiThe conversation with Jerzy Jedlicki is a part of series of interviews starting with the question about the subjects, that the interlocutors during his or her academical career were advised (by different persons and for different reasons) not to pursue. Jedlicki mentions about three such issues: Poles and Jews during II World War period, Israel and Palestine, atheism and faith. He points out that nobody discouraged him from pursuing these subjects – it was himself, who refrained from being vocal on these matters. He clarifies why he used to censor himself, analyses how all the subjects work today in Polish public sphere and explains why he broke the silence several times.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have repeatedly been a topic in cinematography. These films depicted mutually inflicted harm and their moral premises from different perspectives. In recent years, cinema has noticeably lost its “monopoly” on socially significant narratives, making them permanently appear on the silver screen. Nowadays, we need less and less time for death and trauma (social, cultural and individual) to become a material for the entertainment industry. However, instead of joining the choir lamenting this state of affairs, it is worth taking a closer look at it for a change – if not favorably, then at least  with an ambivalent attitude. After all, entertainment can become both an active catalyst for cultural traumas, regulate the dynamics of post-traumatic growth, as well as promote re-traumatization.

One of the most discussed TV series of recent years is Fauda (directed by A. Issaharoff and L. Raz). In the article, I discuss the reception of the film in the Israeli and Western media, as well as the ways of representing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the series in the context of the so-called war on terrorism and forms of violence. In my work, I am particularly interested in the following questions: in what form did the idea of conflict return to the screens and to the public debate? How has the Palestinian issue been marginalized in the Israeli public consciousness? Under what conditions does the violence intensify? Taking into account the forms of violence presented in the series, I am inclined to the thesis that the creators of “Fauda” are trying, sometimes with greater, sometimes less success, to look critically at the reality dictated by the laws of war.

Opis:
In the chaotic situation following the British invasion of southern Palestine at the end of 1917, military officials faced several countervailing pressures. In addition to ongoing military priorities (including international norms pertaining to military occupations, such as the law of the ‘status quo’), pressing humanitarian concerns, and even the personal religious sentiments of individual officers, the British occupation administration was forced to take into account international pressures and interventions resulting from the overlapping and conflicting promises made during the war (inter alia, Sykes‑Picot agreement, Husayn‑McMahon correspondence, Balfour Declaration, and President Wilson’s 14 Points). This paper focuses on the land policy‑making process as a case study with which to weigh the various factors pressing upon the military occupation as it evolved during its first three years. Land ownership was a huge concern: a properly functioning land registry was seen as key to the improvement of economic and social conditions in the largely agricultural economy, and British interventions were followed closely by all interested parties. The land has also been at the centre of the ensuing century‑long conflict between Arabs and Jews. Thus, a close examination of land policies (and especially the 1920 land ordinance) offers an extremely important window on both the rule of law in the aftermath of the war and our understanding of the current, unending conflict in the land.

Determination of natural radioactivity has been carried out in surface and core agricultural soil samples collected from various sites in the Middle Governorate – Gaza Strip, Palestine. Mechanical and chemical analysis has been done to determine soil characteristics. Radon activity concentration measurements were carried out using solid state nuclear tracks detectors, Cr-39. The mechanical analysis results show that they belong to two classes, sandy loam and loamy sand. The sandy loam soil was observed in the eastern side of the study area, whereas the loamy sand was observed in western and middle parts. The radon concentration levels were higher in core samples and were proportionate to the soil depth. Also they were higher in sandy loam than loamy sand soil samples. The radon concentration levels had a positive correlation with fine grains (clay- to silt-size) of soil sample which translocated from upper to lower horizons of soil during its development. Additionally, there was a positive correlation with pH and water content, whereas a negative correlation was observed with organic matter and potassium contents. The positive correlation referred to a large specific surface of fine grains which were located in lower horizons of soil and were able to adsorb more water and consequently led to high radon concentration levels.

Between 2009 and 2015, three early parliamentary elections have been held in Israel, which have led Likud party with Binjamin Netanyahu as the leader to the power. The role of this article is to analyse the election campaigns in these years, paying particular attention to the context of relations with the European Union. The work aims to answer the research question, what were the main issues raised by public opinion during the elections in 2009, 2013 and in 2015, and whether European subjects were important for Israeli politicians and their voters. The work used a behavioural method combined with the descriptive and analytical method, which was conducted primarily through the use of press releases and the Internet’s most important Israeli newspapers.
