Opis:
A new rhipidocystid echinoderm from the Upper Ordovician Chambersburg Formation in western Maryland (USA) is here described based on four exquisitely preserved specimens. Specimens of Durhamicystis americana gen. et sp. nov. preserve both thecal sides and the oral area, with identification of major apertures including peristome, periproct, gonopore, and hydropore. This allows orientation of this species and proper comparison across all rhipidocystids. Durhamicystis americana has a large theca composed of ten marginal plates with only two basals on the posterior side, two ambulacra and seven large oral plates with brachioles attached either on orals or smaller flooring plates. Rhipidocystids include taxa with lateral flattening along the BC-DE axis (i.e., Rhipidocystis) and others along the anterior-posterior A-CD axis (i.e., Durhamicystis, Neorhipidocystis, and Petalocystites) suggesting rhipidocystids may be paraphyletic.

Opis:
2-D modelling of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, migration and accumulation processes was carried out for the four (Middle Cambrian, Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian, Caradocian and Llandovery) source rock horizons. The petroleum potential of these source rocks is different, the highest being observed in the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian horizon and the lowest in the Middle Cambrian one. The maturity of organic matter within these source units increases from the north-east to the south-west of the Polish part of Baltic region. The petroleum generation from these source rocks was highest in the Darlowo and Slupsk blocks as well as in the onshore part of the Leba Block. Expulsion took place mainly from the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian source rocks and these rocks sourced almost all hydrocarbons accumulated within the Middle Cambrian sandstone reservoirs. Migration of hydrocarbons proceeded along fault zones. Almost all petroleum processes in the study area took place between the end of the Pridoli and the end of the Carboniferous. Moreover, during the Permian and the Mesozoic, part of the hydrocarbons remigrated within the reservoir. This process changed the setting and the volume of hydrocarbon accumulations. It was caused by the tectonic rebuilding of the basin and, in most cases, it led to the modification of accumulation range or to the dispersion of hydrocarbons.

Opis:
The burial history, thermal maturity, and timing of hydrocarbon generation of four source rock successions were modelled: the Middle Cambrian, the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian, the Upper Ordovician (Caradocian) and the lower Silurian (Llandovery and Wenlock). The 1-D modelling was carried out in profiles of eight boreholes throughout the western Baltic region. Four selected boreholes are located offshore: A8-1/83, A23-1/88, B6-1/82 and B4-2A/02, and four onshore: Bialogóra 3, Dbki 3, Leba 8 and arnowiec IG 1. The thermal maturity of source rocks is the highest in the deeper buried western part of the basin and decreases from the west to the east and north-east towards the basin margins. The lower Paleozoic source rocks contain oil-prone Type-II kerogen. The modelling indicated that the onset of petroleum generation from the lower Paleozoic source rocks occurred from the Early Devonian through the early Carboniferous period. The peak of hydrocarbon generation took place from the Late Devonian to the Tournaisian. The majority of hydrocarbons generated were expelled during the latest Early Devonian and Carboniferous, and oil has not been expelled from source rock only in the eastern offshore part of the basin.

Opis:
The lower Paleozoic source rocks in the offshore part of the Gryfice and Kolobrzeg blocks (NW Poland) were studied through geochemical data and numerical modelling. The geochemical study revealed a presence of effective source rocks in Caradocian strata, but with low hydrocarbon potential. The remaining lower Paleozoic source rock horizons were not documented by core samples. The timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion was modelled for the K1-1/86 and L2-1/87 boreholes located in the Gryfice and Kolobrzeg blocks, respectively. 1-D and 2-D modelling indicated that in the Kolobrzeg Block the onset of petroleum generation occurred at the end of the Silurian and the beginning of the Devonian. Source rocks in the Gryfice Block reached the early stage of oil generation at the beginning of the Permian and generation processes were completed by the end of the Triassic. Migration of hydrocarbons from source rocks began in the Carboniferous in both the Gryfice and Kolobrzeg blocks and lasted to the end of the Mesozoic. During hydrocarbon migration, an intensive dispersion process was observed, caused by leaking along the fault planes. The modelling revealed that hydrocarbons may have accumulated in Devonian reservoirs. The lack of any discovered accumulations could be the result of hydrocarbon dispersion caused by tectonic deformation and intense vertical fault block movements.

The Tremadocian–Floian (Lower Ordovician) Saint-Chinian, La Maurerie, and Landeyran formations of the southern Montagne Noire (France) collectively contain at least two species of conulariids, namely Archaeoconularia cf. insignis and Conularia azaisi, the latter herein designated as the type species of the new genus, Galliconularia. Archaeoconularia insignis may also occur in the Lower Ordovician Fezouata Shale of southern Morocco, and an indeterminate species of this genus probably occurs in the Lower Ordovician Tonggao Formation of South China. Galliconularia azaisi differs from all other conulariids in having a raised facial midline and very fine, trochoidal transverse ribs which cross the midline ridge without interruption or diminution. In specimens preserving the outermost peridermal lamellae, the transverse ribs bear sub-microscopic nodes, and the broad interspaces are crossed by very slender interspace ridges. Finally, even though the Montagne Noire was part of the western Gondwanan passive margin during Cambro-Ordovician times, G. azaisi remains unknown outside of France.

Opis:
The fossil record of Paleozoic ophiuroids includes a number of forms which share striking similarities with modern relatives in terms of skeletal morphology. These so called modern-type Paleozoic ophiuroids yield an enormous potential for a better understanding of ophiuroid evolution, yet the scarcity of accurate and sufficiently detailed morphological descriptions available to date precludes any further-reaching assessments. Here, we describe an articulated ophiuroid specimen from the Late Tournaisian (early Carboniferous) of Czatkowice quarry, southern Poland, as a new species Aganaster jagiellonicus sp. nov. The good preservation of the specimen allowed for a morphological analysis at a level comparable to recent ophiuroid descriptions. It shows remarkable morphological similarities with extant former ophio-lepidids Ophiomusium and Ophiosphalma. The new find thus contributes to a solid basis for future investigations on the position of the modern-type Paleozoic ophiuroid in the phylogeny of the class.

The article is an attempt to find relations between geology and the dynamics of the Mesozoic surface of the Łódź Synclinorium, the Radomsko Elevation and the Bełchatów Graben and the present relief on the border of the Polish Lowlands and Uplands in its central part. Fossil relief has been compared with the present one as related to the extent of the recession phases of the Saalian (Wartanian) ice-sheet. A significant convergence has been found between the Mesozoic surface plain and the main morphologic elements. The role of elevations and fossil valleys has been stressed as stable forms in the pre-Pleistocene and contemporary landscape. Also stressed has been the meaning of grabens and elevations enforcing longer stoppages of the Wartanian stadial of the Middle Polish Glaciations.

Opis:
Trilobites achieved their maximum generic diversity in the Cambrian, but the peak of morphological disparity of their cranidia occurred in the Middle to Late Ordovician. Early to middle Cambrian trilobites with a specialized cephalon are rare, especially among the ptychoparioids, a group of libristomates featuring the so-called “generalized” bauplan. Here we describe an unusual ptychopariid trilobite Phantaspis auritus gen. et sp. nov. from the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian, Wuliuan) Mantou Formation in the Shandong Province, North China. This new taxon is characterized by a cephalon with an extended anterior area of double-lobate shape resembling a pair of rabbit ears in later ontogenetic stages; a unique type of cephalic specialization that has not been reported from other trilobites. Such a peculiar cephalon as in Phantaspis provides new insights into the variations of cephalic morphology in middle Cambrian trilobites, and may represent a heuristic example of ecological specialization to predation or an improved discoidal enrollment.

Palaeozoic stromatoporoids comprise an extinct class of non-spiculate poriferans that are represented as fossils by their basal carbonate skeleton. A revised terminology for the description of these fossils is presented. Seven orders (Labechiida, Clathrodictyida, Actinostromatida, Stromatoporellida, Stromatoporida, Syringostromatida, Amphiporida) are recognized. The following is recorded for each genus: (1) type species, catalogue number and depository of the primary holotype; (2) synonyms and their type species; (3) diagnosis; (4) stratigraphic range; (5) estimate of the number of species assigned to the genus; (6) stratigraphic and geographic distribution of the genus. Problems in the definition and recognition of the genus are briefly discussed in annotations. One hundred and nine genera are considered valid, or doubtfully valid. Fifty three genera are placed in synonymy. An additional 14 genera are considered to be of uncertain placement in the classification.

Opis:
In the Balkans, the Serbo-Macedonian Unit (SMU), Serbia, is thrust bounded by the composite Tethyan Vardar Zone and the Carpatho-Balkanides. The SMU actually emerges from beneath the Neoalpine Miocene-Pliocene deposits. Both provenance and geodynamic position of the SMU are poorly known and still debated. This paper reviews the data hitherto published and includes some new field data interpretations. The SMU is composed of a Neoproterozoic-Cambrian high-grade (para- and ortho-) gneiss with peraluminous magmatic arc components (560-470 Ma). The SMU is in the contact with Neoproterozoic upper Ordovician-Carboniferous low-grade metasedimentary succession of an accretionary wedge assembly represented by the Supragetic basement. The SMU basement became folded, sheared and metamorphosed around 490-450 Ma. Paleomagnetic data point to high southern latitudes and a peri-Gondwanan position of the SMU at that time, which concurs with glaciomarine evidence recorded from the upper Ordovician sediments at the base of an accretionary wedge succession. Based on the published data and field survey in the Stalać region, we correlate the SMU with the pre-Mesozoic gneiss terrane exposed in the Strona-Ceneri zone of the Alps. This terrane, identified as the Cenerian orogen of the Alaskan subduction type, developed at an active margin of Gondwana during middle Ordovician times. The SMU basement, with augen and migmatitic gneisses and arc-related peraluminous magmatic bodies, developed at this margin as part of the Cenerian belt or its equivalent. Such an orogenic edifice proved transient and in the earliest Silurian the SMU fragments drifted away being bound for Baltica (amalgamated Moesian microplate and Danubian terrane) to which they became accreted in the Carboniferous and included in the southern European branch of the Variscan orogen (Marginal Dacides/Carpatho-Balkanides). Despite consider-able Variscan and Alpine reworking, the pre-Variscan, Cenerian-type crustal assembly along with an inferred boundary between the magmatic arc and the accretionary wedge, accompanied by back-arc/forearc deposits, are still decipherable in the Western Balkan countries.

Opis:
For lithostratigraphic successions of the lower Paleozoic strata in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea between the Slupsk Block and Courland Block, assessment of petrophysical properties was carried out with the use of mercury porosimetry and well logging results. The porosimetric measurements allowed to determine critical rock parameters and to distinguish genetic types of reservoirs. To complete the information on reservoir parameters, available well logs were used. The logs allowed identification of Cambrian strata in boreholes and the distinguishing of several lithostratigraphical units. Results of the porosimetric measurements demonstrated the strongly heterogeneous character of the pore space in the Cambrian rocks, with generally very weak reservoir properties. Fractured and porous-fractured rock space is a principal feature here. Well log anomalies confirmed the diversified lithological development of the Cambrian profile and the somewhat better reservoir parameters of rocks of the Paradoxides paradoxissimus Superzone and the shaly character of the Eccaparadoxides oelandicus Superzone. From the point of view of volumes of potential hydrocarbon accumulations, the capacity of the Cambrian deposits is low, but this is a basic feature of reservoir rocks with fractured and fractured-porous space.

Bedding-parallel calcite veins in Devonian rocks from the southern part of the Holy Cross Mountains Fold Belt in central Poland occur as tabular bodies on shallow dipping as well as vertical Late Paleozoic map-scale and mesoscopic fold limbs. The syntaxial and antitaxial bedding parallel veins contain kinematic indicators such as rotated blocks, fibre boundary steps, boudin trains, beef-like structures and congruous steps. These structures show a sense of movement consistent with the flexural slip typical of folding resulting from buckling during layer-parallel shortening. We propose the mechanism of the gradual formation of the veins and the progression of fabric development which is mostly consistent with an increasing dip angle of the fold limbs and their gradual deformation. Textures of the veins and kinematic indicators within the veins point to the syntectonic growth of calcite during the Late Paleozoic buckle folding in the Holy Cross Mountains Fold Belt.

The epidermal anatomy of Pseudoctenis samchokense is described revealing non−bennettitalean characters of these leaves from the Permo−Carboniferous of China (and Korea). The specimens were originally described as Pterophyllum samchokense suggesting a bennettitalean affinity. They can no longer be considered bennettitalean since their cuticles lack the distinctive brachyparacytic stomata of that clade. Pterophyllum was originally erected as a morphogenus for segmented leaves from the Mesozoic and has subsequently been clearly assigned to the Bennettitales. The segmented leaves from the Permo−Carboniferous of Shanxi and Hebei, China described herein require a new ordinal and generic assignment since the non−bennettitalean cuticular characters documented reinforce the uncertainties in attribution of any foliage older than Late Triassic to the Bennettitales. Based on leaf−architecture and epidermal anatomical characters, the specimens are at best assigned to the cycadalean genus Pseudoctenis. This genus was formerly known only from Mesozoic rocks. Consequently, the specimens are highly significant, as they are among the oldest known vegetative remains of cycads. Re−evaluation of the affinities of all specimens assigned to Pterophyllum from Palaeozoic rocks is thus essential. Based on a review of other Permian–Carboniferous fossil leaves assigned to Pterophyllum, we conclude that none yet reveals definitive bennettitalean characters.
