The author of the text analyzes the strategies of provincializing the Polish feminism and gender studies. Starting points for interpretations in the article are Dipesh Chakrabarty’s book – Provincializing Europe. Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference and feminist publications about modernity, nationalism, capitalism in Poland. In the article the category of a province is considered as an emblem existing in a new regionalism’s discourse. The author claims that the history of the category of a province is entangled in the ambiguities which are related to the glocal understanding of a region; she also reflects on the relations between feminism, regionalism and local experiences of a global reality.

The first wave of feminism in Poland consisted of a wide range of events. All women who were educated, independent, and professionally active and successful were regarded as feminists (regardless of their self-identification). Women of the theater, i.e., playwrights, directors, actresses and scenographers, who occupied themselves with “womanly subjects” in the 1920s and 1930s, created feminist theater which was important though it did not last long. In numerous feminist performances, theatrical productions dealt with subjects such as women in control of their own sexuality and bodies, women’s full participation in life, as well as economic independence and equal rights for women. Feminists in Polish theater, for example, Zofia Modrzewska, Maria Morozowicz-Szczepkowska, Irena Grywińska and Marcelina Grabowska, were typically not treated seriously by male critics, who were condescending, scornful, and unable to transcend their male perspective.

The article presents the works of Polish female artists belonging to the curato- rial-artistic project FEMININE. It can be also called a kind of ongoing interven- tion. The first exhibition took place in 2011 in the gallery Wozownia in Toruńand has continued since then. The cycle functions uninterrupted, deeply em- bedded in the concrete ideas closely related to the feminist art and the female experience entangled in the body, biology and emotions, already reworked in the artistic, cultural and social context. All artists invited to take part in FEM- ININE project have been carefully chosen for several important reasons. First of all, the decision has been made due to the subjective, individual choice and the aesthetic, ethical preferences of the curator. Secondly, it is also important that these talented artists – for various reasons – do not belong to the main- stream of the contemporary art.The presentation of the exhibitions which follows has taken the form of short, personal impressions, created spontaneously after the first contact with the works. Hence, it is more of a notebook with important notations which can be treated as a first step towards deeper scientific analysis, yet to be done.
Prezentuję twórczynie należące do autorskiego projektu kuratorsko- artystycznego FEMININE75, który odbywa się od roku 2011 w Galerii Wozow-nia w Toruniu. Cztery wystawy miały miejsce w Galerii Dworzec Zachodni w Toruniu, w roku 2014 wystawy znowu powróciły do Galerii Wozownia. Pro-jekt ten to swego rodzaju nieprzerwanie trwająca interwencja. Cykl osadzonygłęboko w konkretnych, zdawałoby się już przepracowanych na gruncie arty- styczno-kulturowo-społecznym ideach związanych ze sztuką feministyczną,kobiecym doświadczeniem uwikłanym w ciało, biologię i emocje. Wszystkie artystki biorące udział w FEMININE zostały zaproszone do projektu z kilku ważnych dla mnie powodów. Przede wszystkim kierowałam się subiektyw- nym, indywidualnym wyborem oraz moimi preferencjami estetyczno-etycznymi. Zależało mi również na tym, aby twórczynie nie należały – z róż-nych przyczyn – do mainstreamowego nurtu sztuki. I właściwie ta charakte-rystyka stanowiła klamrę zamykającą moje poszukiwania.

Opis:
Polish Feminism – Paradigms The issue of feminist art struggles with a great problem. In my study I focus solely on Polish artists, and thus on the genealogy of feminist art in Poland. Although all the presented activities brought up the feminist thread, in many cases a dissonance occurs on the level of the artists’ own reflections. There is a genuine reluctance of many Polish artists to use the term “feminist” about their art. They dissent from such categorization as if afraid that the very name will bring about a negative reception of their art. And here, in my opinion, a paradox appears, because despite such statements, their creativity itself is in fact undoubtedly feminist. I think that Polish artists express themselves through their art in an unambiguous way – they show their feminine „I”. The woman is displayed in their statement about themselves, about the experiences, their body, their sexuality. Feminism defined the concept of art in a new way. The state- ment that art has no gender is a myth. The activities of women-artists are broader and broader, also in Poland women become more and more noticed and appreciated. Feminist art does not feature a separate artistic language, it rather features a tendency towards realism, lent by photogra- phy or video, which reflects the autonomy of the female reception of the world. It should be stated that feminism is a socially needed phenomenon, and its critique drives successive generations of women-artists.

Celem artykułu jest poruszenie problemu zastosowania instrumentarium krytyki feministycznej do badań nad literaturą polskiego oświecenia. Jak dotąd, nie cieszy się ona popularnością w środowisku rodzimych znawców tej epoki. Wskazano zalety feminizmu w literaturoznawstwie jak również potencjalne zagrożenia, związane z aplikowaniem kategorii gender do badań nad literaturą dawną. Największym zagrożeniem wydaje się nieuwzględnianie kontekstu historycznego i społeczno-kulturowego. Przywołano prace odnoszące się do innych epok lub literatur obcych, które mogą stanowić punkt wyjścia do badań piśmiennictwa polskiego oświecenia. Jedną z nich jest monografia Marka Jastrzębca-Mosakowskiego, zatytułowana Strategie wymazywania. Kobiece bohaterki w męskich tekstach francuskiego Oświecenia. Wymieniono badaczy polskiego oświecenia, którzy dostrzegają potencjał gender studies (Barbara Judkowiak, Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska). Wskazano obszary badań i możliwości, jakie daje użycie narzędzi krytyki feministycznej. Spodziewane efekty to przywrócenie imienia anonimowych dotąd autorek, odkrycie lub ponowne odczytanie ich twórczości, otwarcie nowych przestrzeni dla jej opisu i interpretacji.
The article raises the problem of the use of the feminist criticism apparatus in research on the Polish Enlightenment literature. The method has not been popular among Polish experts of the epoch. The article discusses the advantages of feminism in literature studies as well as the potential risks associated with the application of the category gender to research on early literature. The greatest threat seems to be the failure to take into account the historical and socio-cultural context. The paper refers to other epochs or foreign literature, which may constitute a starting point for research into the literature of Polish Enlightenment. One such work is a monograph by Marek Jastrzębiec-Mosakowski entitled Strategie wymazywania. Kobiece bohaterki w męskich tekstach francuskiego Oświecenia [Strategies of erasure. Female heroines in the male texts of French Enlightenment]. The article lists researchers of Polish Enlightenment who notice the potential of gender studies (Barbara Judkowiak, Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska) and  points to the areas of research and possibilities offered by the use of feminist criticism tools. The article aims at restoring the names of the previously anonymous female authors, discovering or re-reading their work, as well as opening new spaces for their description and interpretation.

The paper “The Economics of Body: On Marta Syrwid’s Novels” aims, on the one hand, to sketch a portrait of the writer and place her within the space of the Polish literary field; on the other hand, it makes an attempt to interpret her first novel Zaplecze. The author of the text seek to break off with the dominant feminist existential perspective, in which Syrwid has been often inscribed by the critics. Instead, he proposes to view her writing as a continuation of the modern thinking (references are made to e.g. Kafka) about the subject in economic categories, that is as an impossible project of the complete breaking from and becoming independent of the outside reality.

The writings of Sylwia Chutnik are mainly interpreted from the two perspectives: gender and urban (Warsaw). These two perspectives are intertwined in her novels, starting from her very first Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet and continuing till her most recent collection of short stories W krainie czarów, thus giving her prose specific, seditious, and emergency character. This article attempts at firstly, showing Chutnik’s writing as a creative (and increasingly interesting, vide Cwaniary) way of developing fundamental beliefs and problems, narrative and plot structure devices, and literary patterns already used (if only in embryonic form) in the four stories of her first book. Secondly, the article attempts at presenting the literary intertextual background of this prose – exceptionally rich, conscious and… effective.
L’oeuvre de Sylwia Chutnik est perçue avant tout dans deux contextes : genriste et municipal (varsovien). Les deux perspectives s’entrelacent dans ses romans – du premier ouvrage Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet jusqu’au dernier recueil de récits W krainie czarów – et déterminent un caractère spécifique, séditieux et interventionnel de cette littérature. Premièrement, on a essayé de présenter l’écriture de Chutnik comme un développement créatif (de plus en plus intéressant, voir Cwaniary de ses convictions et problèmes essentiels, de ses procédés narratifs et ceux d’affabulation, ainsi que de ses modèles littéraires visibles déjà (au moins à l’état embryonnaire) dans quatre récits de son premier roman ; deuxièmement, on a essayé de présenter l’arrière-plan littéraire et intertextuel de cette prose – exceptionnellement riche, conscient et… efficace.

The goal of the article is to analyze the image of democracy in Polish and German feminism discourse, the way democracy is conceptualized and differentiated. The Author uses the defmite notions applied in ethnolinguistic analyses conducted by the Lublin Eth- nolinguistic School, such as: profiling the notions, projile, thepoint of view, interpretation perspective. The analysis of the collected data leads to the dififerentiation of two basie profiles of democracy: to the real one (oriented towards description) and to the ideał one (expressed with postulates), where the real profile dominates in the discourse of Polish feminism and the ideał profile - in the discourse of German feminism. In the framework of the chief profiles, the Author points out the political profiles in the following discourses: the profile of world-view in Polish discourse, and the social one - in German discourse. The given analysis shows different points of view: the Polish feminists talk about domi- nating and the redundant role of men (in politics particularly), whereas the German feminists talk about the of women in political, social and professional spheres. The presented differences occur as the result of the accepted values. In Polish discourse democracy is used in collocations with the following notions - values: równoace (equality (of rights)), wolnoceoe (freedom, independence), normalnooece (normalization, standarization), whereas in German discourse we meet Gerechtigkeit (justice, equity, faimess), Frieden (pe- ace), Gewaltfreiheit (the absence of violence, coercion, constraint), Wohlstand (welfare, wellbeing, prosperity).

I wrote this article from the perspective of an artist involved in feminism and performance art. My research method connects my theoretical background on art history studies and my practical experience as female artist in Polish social, political and artistic realities. I focus on the position of women artists and their artistic activity in the contexts of the changing political situation. I introduce Polish women artists who were active on the art scene from the seventies until today in the field of performance art. I am also trying to answer the question what the women artists of my generation have in common with their 'artistic grandmothers.' The last part of the text focuses on what has been already achieved and what still needs to be done for women's emancipation both in artistic as well socio-political life. The aim of this article is also to familiarize foreign readers with the specific status of women in the process of the changing of the political situation in Poland that took place after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. In the period of the new democracy, especially during last two decades, performance art pieces by Polish women artists became more rebellious. Since 2016, the course of Polish politics has become more populistic, conservative and democracy is in danger again, and this also badly affects women’s rights and their position in the society.
Artykuł został napisany z perspektywy artystki zajmującej się feminizmem i sztuką performance. Moja metoda badawcza łączy podstawy teoretyczne z pola historii sztuki z praktycznym doświadczeniem artystki w polskich realiach społecznych, politycznych i artystycznych. Skupiam się na pozycji artystek i ich działalności artystycznej w kontekście zmieniającej się sytuacji politycznej. Przedstawiam polskie artystki działające na scenie performance od lat siedemdziesiątych do dziś. Staram się też odpowiedzieć na pytanie, co mają wspólnego artystki mojego pokolenia ze swoimi „artystycznymi babkami”. Ostatnia część tekstu skupia się na tym, co już zostało osiągnięte i co jeszcze trzeba zrobić dla emancypacji kobiet zarówno w życiu artystycznym, jak i społeczno-politycznym. Celem artykułu jest także przybliżenie zagranicznym czytelnikom specyficznego statusu kobiet w procesie zmian politycznej sytuacji w Polsce po upadku żelaznej kurtyny w 1989 roku. W okresie młodej demokracji, zwłaszcza w ostatnich dwóch dekadach, performance polskich artystek stały się bardziej radykalne. Od 2016 kurs oficjalnej polskiej polityki stał się bardziej populistyczny, konserwatywny. Demokracja znów jest zagrożona, a co odzwierciedla się w łamaniu kobiet i wpływa na ich pozycję w społeczeństwie.

Based on selected performances (including Autobiografia na wszelki wypadek [Autobiography just in case] by Michał Buszewicz, Woyzeck by Grzegorz Jaremko, Chcieliśmy porozmawiać o męskości, ale zostaliśmy przyjaciółmi [We wanted to talk about masculinity, but we became friends] by the Grupa Performatywna Chłopaki, Bromance by Michał Przybyła and Dominik Więcek, Halka by Anna Smolar and Ojcowie [Fathers] by Błażej Biegasiewicz), the author analyses transformations in the ways of representing masculinities in recent Polish theatre. In her opinion, it has been possible for the past few years to notice both a marked increase in interest in thematising male emotionality, fragility, caring, tenderness or intimacy in Polish theatre and a radicalisation of angry patriarchal masculinity, especially among those who reject the perspectives of institutional criticism or the #metoo movement. In this article, however, the author focuses solely on outlining the historical conditions that constituted patriarchal masculinity with all its qualities and on analysing feminist-formed masculinities in Polish theatre using methodologies developed by feminist theorists (bell hooks and Karla Elliott) and by researchers associated with the field of critical studies of men and masculinities (Michael Kimmel, Raewyn Connell, Jason Wilson, Erik Anderson and Paco Abril).

This article is a critical analysis of the rhetoric of successful mass mobilization against the proposed total ban on abortion in Poland, focusing on the Black Protest initiated in social media in September 2016 and resulting in the All-Poland’s Women Strike which took place on the October 3rd, 2016. I argue with the dominant feminist narrative of the Black Protest, which conceptualizes it as a radical transformation of public debate and civil society in Poland as well as a clear manifestation of changing identities and attitudes towards the political among the so-called “ordinary women“. Instead of a story of change, I propose a narrative of continuity, arguing that 2016 women’s mobilization was successful and mobilized so many different women because it was rooted in well-known neoliberal discourse and traditional social genotypes of femininity, such as the Polish Mother and the indispensable family life manager.

Opis:
This piece of work is an attempt, grounded in artistic practice, to describe several key aspects of the mechanisms of hierarchy, power and violence in Polish theatre taking into account the perspective of a woman director. These mechanisms are currently the subject of theoretical studies and discussions within the community. In this paper I would like to propose a look “from the inside.” There is a historical and theoretical part followed by an attempt to analyse the mechanisms of power-sharing in theatre based on a discussion on competitions for the position of theatre manager, taking into consideration the criteria that discriminated against women for years, and the unspoken assumptions. This is followed by a self-reflection on the evolution of the author’s own working methods as a director with almost twenty years of artistic experience, and finally a description of the hierarchical relationships between an actress, a director and a manager, and of the political mechanisms involved. The second part of the paper is empirical in nature and is based primarily on the author’s experience of working at the Teatr Polski in Warsaw as well as her active participation in professional and public debate. It also describes the tension between the possibility of individual professional success and the permanence of anachronistic and violent systemic mechanisms of functioning of the institution of theatre.
