    The Warsaw Uprising of August to October 1944 is a most appropriate subject given the impending 60th anniversary observance of this heroic and tragic occurrence. Our panel affords us with the opportunity to discuss and to reflect on this event, which in many ways embodies so much of the larger story of modern Poland. Our discussion occurs also at a time when we recall many other events of 1944, a climactic year in World War II. June 6 marks the 60th anniversary of the successful and massive Allied military invasion of France in Normandy. This victory was the decisive military achievement of the United States of America and its allies against Nazi Germany on the western front.

    Opis:
    The article presents the image of Polish Americans in the Polish press after 1989. It is a continuation of the Author’s previous research pertaining to the Polish press under the communist regime, published in the Polish American Studies. The text is based on an analysis of several hundred articles from: the Polish press addressed to general public, mostly weeklies indexed in Bibliografia Zawartości Czasopism by the National Library in Warsaw; two main Polish dailies, Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita – their full-text archival databases; and from selected weeklies that index and publish their archival issues. The article is organized in three main sections: Polonia and Poland (or Polonia for Poland), Polonia in the USA, and Poland for Polonia. Polonia for Poland occupies the largest part of the text, proportionally to the attention paid by the journalists who presented Polish American aid for Poland, especially charitable activities, sponsoring of Polish monuments and events, athletes and other people. Polonian businesses with Poland are also described. Polish American political actions for Poland are dominated by the NATO enlargement campaign, but other problems, e.g. visa waiver projects, are also mentioned. Polonia in the USA reflects on the discussions on the old issue of the position of the Polish American ethnic group in the mainstream American society and its political actions, some internal conflicts within Polonia, especially those related to Edward Moskal, and some Polish American activities in the USA (or the lack thereof), including anti-defamation. Poland for Polonia presents controversies on the Polonian-Polish relations, dating back to the pre-WWII period. One of the aims of the article was to compare the image of Polish Americans presented after 1989 with the one influenced by the propaganda of ‘People’s Poland’. It turns out that some paradigms outlived the collapse of the communist regime, e.g. the myth of a rich uncle from America, the stereotype of uneducated Polish American masses, and the image of a hard and primitive life of new immigrants. Others have been revised, however: Polish American efforts for Poland are more often appreciated than criticized, Americanization of the Polish ethnic group is not lamented and opportunities of life in the USA seem to dominate difficulties. After large interest of the Polish press in the American Polonia presented at the beginning of the 1990s, one can observe its decline, especially after the end of the NATO-enlargement campaign.

    Christine Przybyła-Long is one of the 9 milion Americans of Polish origins living in the United States. Her descendatns came to Chicago during the mass migration from the turn of 20th century and she was born there in 1931. In her account Christine Przybyła-Long tells about her childhood and a life of a family belonging to the “Old Polonia”. She gives a lot of attention to the situation of Poles who migrated to the United States after WWII and to her own political involvement into Polish American affairs after 1990, that was crucial in the case of granting four thousand people american visas.

    Artykuł dotyczy działalności Polskiego Stronnictwa Ludowego, które ze względu na przepisy prawa amerykańskiego i kanadyjskiego nie mogło działać pod swoją nazwą. Funkcjonowało tam jako Związek Przyjaciół Wsi Polskiej. Organizacja ta kierowana przez grono polonijnych działaczy ludowych (Stanisław Mermel, Józef Migała, Bolesław Krakowski, Bolesław Biłogan, Tadeusz Paul, Feliks Rembiałkowski), przy wsparciu prezesa PSL Stanisława Mikołajczyka zdołała zorganizować kilkanaście kół PSL/Związku Przyjaciół Wsi Polskiej skupiających kilkuset członków i członkiń. Większość kół PSL/ZPWP działało w Chicago i okolicy. Udało się zorganizować koła PSL na wschodnim wybrzeżu i w kilku stanach środkowych. Koła PSL/ZPWP były oparciem politycznym dla przebywającego na stałe w Ameryce prezesa PSL S. Mikołajczyka. Poprzez swoich członków, którzy zdołali uzyskać dość wysoki status materialny, koła zorganizowały świetlice, domy ludowe oraz zespoły ludowe muzyczne i chóralne, co pozwoliło im zaistnieć w środowisku polonijnym. Koła wspierały linię polityczną S. Mikołajczyka, szczególnie w okresie licznych kryzysów wewnętrznych oraz w czasie ataków przeciwników na to ugrupowanie polityczne, które było spychane na margines emigracyjnej sceny politycznej. Na krótko pojawiło się też koło PSL/ZPWP na terenie Kanady. W artykule opisano działalność tej organizacji w okresie kierowania Naczelnym Komitetem Wykonawczym PSL przez S. Mikołajczyka. Organizacja ta przetrwała na terenie amerykańskim do końca lat 80. XX w. Poprzez zespół amerykański PSL/ZPWP dość wyraźnie oddziaływała na całe emigracyjne Stronnictwo.
    The article concerns the Polish People’s Party (Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe), which, due to US and Canadian law, could not work under its own name. It functioned there as the Association of Friends of the Polish Village (Związek Przyjaciół Wsi Polskiej). This organization, led by a group of Polish people’s activists (Stanisław Mermel, Józef Migała, Bolesław Krakowski, Bolesław Biłogan, Tadeusz Paul, Feliks Rembiałkowski), with the support of the PSL president Stanisław Mikołajczyk, managed to organize some PSL/ZPWP Circles gathering several hundred members. Most of them operated in and around Chicago. They managed to organize PSL Circles on the East Coast and in several middle states. The Circles were a political support for the president of PSL S. Mikołajczyk who was permanently residing in America. Through their members, who managed to obtain a high material status, the clubs organized day-rooms, people’s houses, and folk music and choral groups, which allowed them to appear in the Polish community. The Circles supported the political line of S. Mikołajczyk, especially in the end of numerous internal crises and during the attacks of opponents on this political grouping, which was relegated to the margins of the political émigré scene. The PSL/ZPWP group in Canada also appeared for a short time. The article describes the activities of this organization during the leadership of the Supreme Executive Committee of the PSL by S. Mikołajczyk. This organization survived in the American territory until the end of the 1980s. The American team quite clearly influenced the entire émigré Party.
